I love love love all them songs ! His voice has got such a beautiful sound to it …..I can never get tired of listening to him sing …. Thankyou for highlighting these songs xxx
RCA missed the boat on Elvis in the 70s. A LOT of great songs 73-76. Country music was changing, and so was Elvis. If Elvis would've lived, I believe he would've ruled the country charts in the 80s.
Moody Blue album peaked at #28 on Billboard 200, just before his death. It was his highest charting studio album in 6 years since Elvis Country album. It will rise to #3 after he death. The Moody Blue single itself was a Top 10 hit in the UK. Despite Elvis didn't perform a single concert in the UK during his 23-year career, people out there were still buying his records. That's fantastic. His records were sold really not bad in the 70's, especially compared to his contemporaries, like Chuck Berry or Rick Nelson.
@toastertwo1602 Due to poor management, bad quality and mixing of his recordings, plus the wave of 50s nostalgia, his reputation suffered. Some great music!!
I love this video and all Elvis' music! All the songs are awesome sung by Elvis! There will never be another singer like him that can sing anything and sound awesome! This brought me to tears! Thank you, David!
“Loving Arms” is one that I listen to every day! Country and blues are two genres that I came to appreciate for the first time when I “discovered” Elvis a little over a year ago. Loved this! 🫶
Lovin Arms is perhaps Elvis's best vocal performance of the 70s.His voice had a purity and power unmatched by any other singer on this sublime track. The Stax sessions are much underrated.👑👑👑👑👑
You've nailed the sentiments about these sessions that I've had for years!! They've never received the credit that they deserve. Stupendous! Every time I listen to Lovin' Arms, I have to crank up the "Singin' somewhere in the lonely niiiight, Dreaming of the arms that held me TIIIIGHT!" Just love it!
Great video ! Thank you. I know the work that goes into keeping up a channel that’s on the level yours is. We, the fans, appreciate you and all that you do.
David , Loving Arms is one of my favorites . When Elvis sang he'd put his heart into each song...whether he felt up to it or not. Be it rock n roll...ballads..country or gospel. Yes, Elvis had it all. I loved to hear him speaking at the beginning. Such a melancholy way to end my evening. Thank you and God Bless you David. ⚡️💖 TCB
Always loved "Loving Arms" - truly a gem. So many great songs came from those Stax sessions - always thought they were underrated. Great video as usual!
Elvis was at his very best when he was allowed to explore and be free……however even on a bad day, he could outperform anyone on the planet…..then and now…..we miss you E every single day, sleep in eternal peace you beautiful soul
David, I so agree with you that Dec. ‘73 at Stax was such a powerful session for Elvis. He was recharged, in comparison to the unfocused and lackluster session that July. “Loving Arms” is one of my favorite Elvis songs as is his his version of the wistfully melancholic adult contemporary classic “Good Time Charlie’s Got The Blues” which he also recorded during this session. Great perspective and great stuff from you on this one!
I heard a great quote from the colonel today - "when I met the boy all he had was a million dollars worth of talent - now he's got a million dollars". sounds exactly like the colonel
Im reminded how truly special his artistry was by the great inside information you share with us on your OUTSTANDING channel! Well done my man, you never cease to amaze...
Elvis was more than Rock n Roll, his amazing rendition of a ballad was incredible, he got so much emotion into the song that you believed it. Loving arms is truly great track and it is such a !gem" to hear out takes, any Elvis fan just loves these moments to hear something different Stax in my opinion was another incredible highlight in Elvis career, maybe it did not satisfy the critics who wanted him to do more Rock, but it satisfied Elvis because he was singing the songs he wanted to sing and it certainly satisfied this fan. Great upload thanks.
I love listening to the alt takes too. I can't actually remember what was dubbed/over dubbed or not dubbed at all on these stax recordings as its been a while for me but for years whenever I'm looking up an elvis track on UA-cam I automatically add the word "take" to my search. I usually enjoy listening to these alt takes as they give you a stripped back and authentic sound compared to a lot of the masters which, for me, sometimes have too much layered on. The horns, the backup singers and even Elvis's voice being pushed down in the mix. Prime example would be the legendary take six of Suspicious Minds. Some others... Stranger in my own hometown and I washed my hands in muddy water. I'm really off topic now...! Honky Tonk Angel from these sessions is fantastic.
I’ll do the same thing! I like the alt. takes after these years I listen to the masters, and I also like the undubbed! The horns and all that is not necessary.
You all ever checked the from 1st take to master series for Elvis songs on UA-cam? Really gives a listener insight to how Elvis' vocals, feeling and such came together in a song he sang.
@@ElvisistheMan_ Check out Like a Baby take 2. The acoustic is louder than in the master. It always sounded to me like Elvis's playing style but I wasn't 100% sure as the playing is also much more adventurous than we are used to from Elvis. More licks thrown in and he's up and down the fretboard. It is him though! If you check out take 1, Elvis plays the intro on the acoustic and then between takes 1 and 2 he shyly says "I can't make it...y-you get the intro." to someone else. Very cool!
Oh gosh I haven’t listened to these songs in quite awhile..so true how awesome it would be to hear it differently on FTD’s! I found myself singing along the way it is on the master haha! His voice is superb, astounding!
IMHO the Stax sessions were an improvement over the 1971 Nashville sessions. Especially the songs he recorded in December of 1973. My favorite songs from that sessions is "Thinking About You". Another great cut.
You don't have to CONVINCE ME HOW GREAT ELVIS WAS.... there was no one like him, and there never will be...I watch Elvis on UA-cam...EVERYDAY, sometimes it maybe for 30min... and sometimes it can be 5hrs..or longer...like now.. it's 4 am and I've been watching Elvis reaction since around 9:30pm....I saw him in concert in 1973.. when I was 16yrs old.. and I can't remember one song he sang...I was just so caught up in.. him.. he was just so amazing...I mean I even remember what I wore, but once I saw him, it was like all I could do was see...I guess I was TOTALLY STAR STRUCK...I just love him... then and now... there will NEVER BE ANYONE LIKE ELVIS..❤️❤️❤️
Thanks so much for another great video!! I love ❤ Love Elvis’ 💎 Gems! I also favor his outtakes much more than the masters!! I could listen to em all day long so thanks again bc I really enjoy your channel and appreciate All the Hard work it takes to bring Elvis to us!!
The Colonel, RCA, and Elvis' inability to take charge of his career were all big reasons he had apathy and lost interest. Can you imagine if Elvis dumped Col and RCA and with a Steve Binder type manager who would not let him get away with being complacent, what a force of nature he would have been. The overseas tours, great music, and a good movie role....he would not have been bored bc he would have been challenged. It may have saved his life. Thanks David for your videos. I always enjoy them.
What did Steve Binder do after the 68 Special? Not a lot. Elvis did plenty. These songs were too downbeat to be hits they were more about how Elvis was feeling when he recorded them and he picked songs that he told a tales that he related too. The 72 -77 songs tell us more about Elvis as an artist and man as does tone in his voice. Its not Hound Dawg for girls its better and more adult.
@paulandrew6457 .....Did you watch the documentary on the Making of the 1968 special?? Steve Binder gave him a voice and fought the Col. I am in no way putting Elvis down. I just know he had dreams for other things, and I wish those opportunities were not taken from him. He deserved better.
I just love that song "Loving Arms". Sadly he didn't sell many records anymore. He had to earn his money doing live shows. By the way, I love those outtakes too. Many times better than the masters.
Gotta catch up here 😂😂..Elvis was not only a vocal genius and the king of vocals, but he was a producer in his own way!! He had an ‘ear’ to what works or doesn’t work. His vocals on that particular country song ‘Loving Arms’ was INSANE….. I always play that particular verse over and over and over just to hear that powerful voice. Friggin wow, some great recordings here..TCB⚡️⚡️⚡️
What you said about Elvis’s voice in 71 is something I haven’t noticed. I’ll have to go back and see if I can pick up on that. He definitely had some vocal transitions through the years. There was a pretty clear transition in about 66-67, and you can really tell by the 68 special that his voice had chanced quite a bit from the early years
I wonder why RCA didnt push Lovin' arms more as well as that whole session. I used to crank "i gotta feeling in my body" when getting ready for school quite often.
Kathy Westmoreland once commented that these recordings weren't supposed to be heard by the public and that Elvis would have been mortified for us to hear them. Everyone gets a frog in their throat now and again. I personally find the recording process interesting. You can listen and tell how hard they worked! I sometimes find some of the out-takes better than what was released! (There were a lot of other artists who covered this song at the time, Olivia Newton-John was also one)
The July sessions were marred by an outdated studio that was too small, the sound was bad, Elvis favorite mike was stolen. RCA brought in a sound truck for the December sessions and viola, magic.
I love all his recordings made with American sound studio and Nashville, i always wondered why he just sang most of the same stuff , he could have done so much more 😢
The Stax Sessions included some really good bluesy tunes that could've been killer. Unfortunately Elvis' voice might have been at its all-time low. It's weak and thin and shaky and he even wanders off key. It's hard to believe that he is the same singer who was the best vocalist in the world ten years earlier. Can you imagine him singing some of these tunes like Three Corn Patches, If You Don't Comeback in like 1967-68? They would've been as good as Big Boss Man and High Heel Sneakers. You mentioned some of his issues and I think it's obvious that it really took a toll on his voice (drugs, poor diet, overwork, smoking). Take Good Care of Her is another example of him losing his vibrato, resonance and power. It's sad. He should've been in rehab and been resting. Still my man and still the GOAT.
Loving Arms would be later recorded by Dixie Chick and Katey Sagal and they do what elvis did and empathize on the kast verse with that higher and stronger notes on "dreaming of the arms that held me tight".

Like we've said before Elvis was never scared to share the stage, and even in the interview here he credits his band members as inspiring and he's sincere when he says that, it's from the heart. Likewise in these places especially he soaks up the energy from all the artists that have played there before him it's in the walls and he feels it.
