I recently owned a 2009 Crown Majesta V8 with the 1UR-FSE and 8 speed auto. It is the same drivetrain as what is in the Lexus LS460 and GS460. It was in mint condition and a Grade 4.5. The build quality was impeccable and the V8 and transmission turbine smooth with a nice linear response. It has a dual personality where on one hand it is a luxury cruiser and on the hand will haul some ass if you need it to doing 0 to 100 in the mid to high 5's. At 100kmh it sits well below 2000rpm thanks to the 8spd auto. As mentioned in the video it has creature comforts and features galore. For the price there is really not much that can touch it and is a far less riskier option than the equivalent Euro marques of the same vintage. The same goes for the Crown Athlete and Crown Hybrids.

In Japan, crowns have long been a sign of success in the middle-income bracket.
The sales slogan, "Someday, a Crown," was so well-known that it was even used to describe the "Someday, a Crown.
It has therefore been used as a company car for company directors and as a police car by the police.
Although originally a luxury car, Toyota rarely sold it overseas.
When the first generation Crown was brought to the U.S., it received poor reviews, and it was not sold in overseas markets, where people are much larger than the Japanese.
Many comparisons with the Camry are also correct because Toyota is selling it in place of the Crown.
On the other hand, as a vehicle exclusively for the Japanese market, it has evolved in its own unique way.
As pointed out in the video, not only has it adopted many advanced technologies, but it has also come to share its basic design with Lexus as time has progressed.
In many cases, the sales schedule was such that new technologies and designs introduced in the Crown were introduced in the Lexus, so the equipment is quite advanced even if it is 10-2 years old.
Recently, the Crown has finally been sold in the U.S. market, but the size of the car has remained almost the same because it has not been sold in foreign markets for a long time.
This is the result of consideration for parking space in Japan, but it is lighter and more compact than the Lexus model of the same size, which is a happy miscalculation.
To differentiate it from the Lexus models that were later reimported to Japan, some of the engine and other specifications are one rank lower than those of Lexus models in the same class, but the light weight of the car is the reason it still delivers sufficient performance.
Because of this background, Crown users are generally older and wealthy to some extent, so Crown cars are often in good condition and have short mileage.
On the other hand, the design and user interface are conservative.
In a sense, it is one of the most JDM-inspired vehicles among Toyota cars.
In the past, there was a model equipped with a 1JZ engine, and since then, the Crown has mainly consisted of two models: the "Royal Saloon," which pursued only comfort, and the "Athlete," which sought unexpectedness in appearance and driving performance.
The Athlete model was particularly popular among Japanese sports car enthusiasts, and Toyota, hoping to lower the age of its users, adopted a sporty design with considerable enthusiasm.
Although Crown had continued to use the FR system, the latest model was converted to the FF system in order to introduce a wide range of derivative models such as SUV types.
It is completely different from the conventional Crown, but rest assured that it is still a luxury car.
The Crown is more famous than the Land Cruiser in Japan.
Therefore, it is no exaggeration to say that the Crown is the most reliable model among Toyota cars because of the importance placed on its design, technology, and reliability.
However, in Japan, some users have been modifying their vehicles in a rather reckless manner, calling it "VIP customization," and it has become a popular trend.
Most of the users are wealthy elderly people, and it is a danger signal when the maintenance records are missing.
It is unlikely that Crown users in Japan have no maintenance records because Crowns are always serviced at Toyota dealers and are often used with great care.
Last but not least, Crowns used in Japanese police cars are rarely seen in the used car market because the engines are specially tuned.
If you have a chance to get one, you are so lucky that you may think you have won the lottery.
The wheels are steel with plastic covers, which is a classic specification, but the inside is tuned directly by Toyota, making it a super-rare spec.

I've owned a Toyota Crown Majesta V8 for six years now. Super smooth, luxurious and powerful. But be aware of the Crown models with air suspension. When any of those components fail, you're up for big bucks and a lot of inconvenience. Conversion to coil-overs should be considered.

    1. 20 speaker sound system with speakers in the rear headrest
    2. Night vision if you have the full lcd gauge
    3. Lane assist with adaptive cruise control
    4. Adjustable air suspension ( it can last if you dont drop it to the ground like a lot of people)

My brother imported one of these months ago (i think he got a 2010 one but not sure of the exact model) and its probably the one car so far that he hasnt whinged about yet early on. Took around 5 months altogether due to delays in Japan with getting the car sorted for import plus delays in getting a berth in a container ship but once it got here, it probably only took two weeks to get everything cleared by RMS and all compliance-related work done and sorted.
It's been his dream car for a long period as we grew up with a Crown as the family car (he learned driving in one without any power steering and full manual) and since he couldnt import the family car (would've cost a bomb in getting it repaired and compliance work alone plus, well, dad scrapped it before he retired), a newer Crown was the next best thing.

I owned one for around 2 years. Before that I bought the factory service manual and translate the catalogue for around 2 years.
Some correction: the hybrid comes with 10 speakers standard. This one comes with 18 speaker "Toyota premium speaker system". However the extra 8 didn't contribute any to audio but rather active noise cancelling (notice the speakers on the shoulders of the front seats). I only occationally notice it's doing it's thing so good to have but not the deal breaker.
The air suspensions are only available for the long wheel base Majestas. Hybrids comes with computer controlled active suspension aka AVS (and through out 12 gen to 14 gen, the rear structs are always the achilles heels). The cheaper way is to buy the KYB oe replacement part KEG9331 (some extra parts are required but not provided) and unfortunately KYB AU didn't have those, you will have to buy them from Japan somehow. Put on any structs that didn't come with AVS will trigger 2 error codes (L/R rear struct actuator malfuction).
    Some quirks:
E-CVT has nothing to do with bell/chain drive CVT, it's 2 motors with planetary gear sets.
Remove some trim panels and you will notice it's built on Lexus standards. The clips contacting surfaces comes with cloth, which also on the trim panel contacting points. The rattle you hear is likely cause by the rubbish in the cup holder.
Notice the card inside the centre console? They came out of the factory with 2 key fobs and 1 card key.
The trunk operates differently with most other cars. It can only be opened either by press the trunk open key on the driver side door card or have a key in your pocket and press the trunk open key on the right hand side on top of the rear licence plate. It won't open when the car is unlock but you don't have the key from the outside. Open the trunk will not change the lock state to unlock.
This should be the first Toyota with full digital dash (Doug DeMuro's rant!) and it's not for customisation but the night view system. My personal experience of the night view system is it's too laggy (~0.5-1 second) and the field of vision is too narrow. It's good to have when driving in poor lit residential area or close to forest (so you can see if any roo is trying to give you a nasty suprise) but that's it.
The one in the video has the interior led strips on top (kind of rare).
Mine came with the rear executive package so it's kind of like a 3-zone but it's not. There is an extra air box and evaporator top of the hybrid battery and provide cold air for rear passangers only. The vents are next to the rear grab handles (you will notice the grab handles are in a kind of akward position). If it didn't come with the air box nor the roof led strips, the vent holes will be replaced by a pair of extra map/reading lights.
Compare to an entry level new Camry which has around half of the horse power, the Camry comes with 235 width tyres, the Hybrid? 225. So DON'T do stupid things, especially in the wet. I'm thinking using 235/45 R18 tyres when the current ones wear out.
Also the LKA (lane keeping assit) is the early generations so didn't work as good as the currents ones but good to have.
If the car comes with LKA then there will be a plastic trim piece between the rear exhaust holes. There is a rear-facing radar behind it. If the radar detects a car coming too fast behing you the car will move the rear seat back to the upmost position and part of the front seat headrest will extend forward to reduce whiplash damage, also the hazard will flash automatically.
Unfortunately it's from an era when smoking is considered cool so you will likely need an ozone generator to kill the smell.

There is no doubt about it, Toyota do make very good cars, maybe the best. I have a 2005 Camry with the 1mz-fe engine. This has done 355000 km to date. The bodywork is tight and the engine is both very quiet and uses a barely noticeable amount of oil between changes (every 5000k + filter). The auto changes are so smooth as to be barely perceptible. Regarding repairs, a routine timing belt replacement and a new water pump have been the recent costs with an alternator a couple of years ago. The only mod has been 16 inch OEM alloys, they look nice! I'm tempted by the thought of an imported Crown but sadly inhibited financially. Never mind, at least I feel in the ballpark with my trusty Camry. Thanks for a well put together video, I'm an avid subscribed follower of redriven :)

They've come a long way since my mum's first car, which was a mid 70s Crown. I'd buy one of these if I needed a new car... but I love my 2014 2.4L Lancer GSR Sportback.

Been an owner of a S170 Crown Majesta V8 for a while, other than some minor stuff and a broken alternator this thing rocks, such a step up from my previous VW Passat. Super smooth and comfy, and when you press the pedal down it gives you the biggest smile there is. Would recommend!

Not surprised about the level of comfort and refinement. This generation of the Crown is built off the same "N" platform architecture alongside the Lexus LS (XF40) and GS (S190). I'm in the USA so we still have to wait 10-15 years to import these gems.

I got myself a Toyota Crown. I imported it myself and it’s not a difficult process.
Mine is a non-hybrid 2005 GRS-184 crown Athlete. Super happy with the car love the acceleration, features, class in appearance and I love how special it makes me feel on the road.
Also not forgetting the mandatory wave from other Crownies. Best I’ve owned so far.

Hello from New Zealand. I saw a Crown Station Wagon in the supermarket car park. As I was looking at it the owner turned up. We had a good talk about it , 2.4 litre 4 cylinder rear wheel drive, 1997. That is the only one I have seen. He was thinking about putting a Lexus 4.0 V8 in it...if it would fit. Love your channel.

I'm from Bangladesh and sadly there's not a large automotive youtube scene surrounding used cars. Fortunately I just discovered your channel and AU's unique situation (no more local brands r.i.p Holden) is just perfect for reviewing used cars. But I do hope What goes wrong mechanically should be a separate and larger section of the video. That kind of info is invaluable. Subbed! Keep up the good work.

The latest model has to be one of the most sexiest cars I have seen in the flesh whilst in Japan. I'd buy one in a heartbeat if the price was right. Unfortunately dealers here are asking close to 85k for one where they are about 60k AUD brand new given the exchange rate.

I’m late seeing this but what the Euro’s offer is that they are imported here officially with all the advantages that has for parts, repairs and insurance. It’s such a pity that Toyota has never imported these here because I find a Camry about as exciting as single ply toilet paper but these are very appealing. They would sell all they imported if they offered them.

2GR-FE is a classic ... I wish this had been the base for the Aurion. Rear wheel V6 or V8 with that peak Toyota build quality would have been a beautiful combination. Also, whoever owns that car ... wow - beautiful condition - paint looks brand new and the car is obviously loved. Would buy one in a heartbeat if I didn't love the car I have.

Sold my 2009 2GR FSE Crown last year. ( UK 🇬🇧) owned 2 years. Absolutely amazing cars, soft close doors were to die for. Kit it had on for a 2009 was 2nd to none. I've worked in the garage trade since 1986, I'd not have anything else than Toyota for my day to day cars. The Crown 👑 was a flying machine also. Shocked many German cars whos drivers were clueless about the Crown, saying that most German car owners are blinkered and clueless anyway 😂. Good video 📹 on a fantastic car I'd recommend anyone to try one. Keep your German crap. 😊

Great value for the price, suggest you have unlimited hire car option in insurance policy because if you smash it it will take months and months to get parts and many Toyota dealers won't assist because it's a nightmare to deal with Japan.
