Just an fyi, air bnb is responsible for the insanely rapid rise of rent costs in Hawaii. Seems like something that wouldn't even be on the radar of Hawaiian surfers for investment. Think about the long term results of investing. Food for thought

This podcast is just so "light" to listen. Like the way you guys talk about and explain stuff is just so natural. It's informative and really fun. keep on going dudes! if you guys ever run out of topics ( which i doubt) would really appreciate a : top 10 world surf hidden gem spots or where to surf in hawaii for each level of ability, good alternatives to pipeline to get the skill to surf it ( like your progression when you were kids throught all the spot steps to get to pipeline and identify them so tourists can maybe do that instead of crowding pipe). thank you for the content , hyped for the EP. 11 !

Nate’s best videos are the ones where he gives tips. There was one about wipeouts i recall, something like trying to spot light through the foam, that I thought was great. I wish you guys could do more of those, and have examples of clips that give a better visual.
I was trying to take in what you’re saying here, but the only take away is square shoulders on a steep drop, press into front foot harder.
I was one of the YT people urging Nate to not go as heavy working out. It has been my experience that if you overdo the weights, you get injured. At 41, I workout more like Laird, for longevity, than I do to deadlift for strength. Deadlifts have taken out more discs in more people than they’re worth doing. There’s just certain lifts that aren’t worth it. Plus, you don’t necessarily need heavy heavy weight to get time under tension. You can pretend 100lbs is 1000lbs.
But, training to avoid injury is all about proprioceptive exercise.Do all the stabilization and mobility training no one else does. Then deadlift every once in awhile. And you’re right Nate, shoulder mobility is everything for a surfer. I’m 37 weeks into surfing through a rotator issue while doing everything possible short of surgery to keep pain at bay. I let my shoulder get tight. Now I’m paying the price.

  • @danbrown4205

I surfed for many, many years in the cold water of Northern California. Im now in my late 60s and now both knees, one hip, one shoulder, and some degenerated discs in my back. Surfing definitely takes a toll on one’s body (I’m sure the rock/ice climbing, skiing, and mountain biking contributed as well). With that said, I wouldn’t change a thing! (Pro tip: have an orthopedic surgeon in the family)

Pushups and pullups perfectly replicates paddling. If you can do 70 full range pushups in a row, and 20 full range pullups you will be able to paddle your ass off regardless if you surf regularly. I know because i surf 3-4 times a year and ive always got more paddle power than anyone in the line up.

Like you guys mentioned it’s kinda all out on the table whereas before I think it was too easy to idolize a**holes (hence, don’t meet your heroes). I also think that the reason people love even watching “bad” surfers is because there are so many people who love surfing so much who are landlocked or obligated to a job for one reason or another and believe it or not seeing any kind of surfing was better than nothing. Still love y’all and the podcast v much!! Just offering a different perspective.

Would be interesting to hear how you collab with your filmers, do they get a set %/ is it on a case by case basis / or set fee? What % of your earnings now comes down to social media i.e. youtube monetisation + online brand collabs?
think it would be helpful for the groms to hear from the guys on the coal face. Few of my childhood friends slipped through the cracks because they avoided social media, were still in love with nostalgia of surf mags. i dunno maybe the new kids are all over it, just a suggestion.

I have a home paddle training solution! Body By Jake: Tower200 door trainer. I lay on top a 3-4 ft pedastol and paddle with hands through bottom door holds with deep strokes. Just make sure hands don’t hit floor. Can use it’s variable resistance. I work beyond 9-5 sometimes, and live 45 mins from shore and lately weekend conditions suck. Mix in the Tower200 with some pool laps and stay paddle ready.

Surfing screws up my back knee. That knocked knee inward position for good backhand surfing particularly. Ugh. And yeah terrible for my neck too. And I’m not even remotely charging waves of consequence like you pros. Cuz I mean any elite athlete of almost any sport will just push their bodies to point where there’s some type of damage and often long term.

Hi Koa, love the pics and vids! Curious if the "I Love A.S.S." is referring to Artikal Sound System (Reggae band)?

Y'all should do a segment on traveling with oversized boards. Or just traveling with boards period. I won't bore you with my last 2 adventures, but commercial airlines are becoming a problem for older surfers.

Buy low, then sell at profit (don't wait for it to get even higher, pull the trigger, no regrets), NEVER buy and hold, especially over a weekend. Never, ever fall in love with a stock. This is from hard lessons I've had in my 68 years.

How about bring Eli on. He's so gnarly. Erik Aeder sent me a photo of Eli at Jaws during his heat on a Bomb.
And now I guess he is a stunt man? You'd have stories for days w him.
    Good job on channel.

Guys epoxies are great for clean conditions due to the lightness, but we’ve gone to glassing them heavy so there more like a poly 2x6oz deck 16oz bottom. Way better and super strong. Also yoga can help balance you! I surfed almost 60 years and definitely did not grow up cross training. Surfing is really hard on your body because you over develop one group of muscles.
Investing in the stock market is for the rich. I knew a guy who had 50 seats on the stock exchange and could literally change the market! Buy Realestate at the right time , best thing I ever did was to cash out of the market and bought a house! You guys are so funny. Ps Nate your mom use to live in Monmouth Beach right near me! Never met her but my step son had your step brother in one of his classes:)

Super upset you guys didn’t call your podcast “Splitting the Peak”. Anyway, y’all should do a drunk questions episode where y’all get drunk and we ask you super random questions. I mean, only if you consent

The term “flow state”describes a mental state in which a person is completely focused on a single task or activity. They are directing all of their attention toward the task, and they do not experience many thoughts about themselves or their performance. Some people refer to this informally as being “in the zone.”19 Apr 2022
