  • I am passing this knowledge on to you, because all knowledge should be free. Read more below...
    Fix'n Wax ingredients (my own recipe):
    1 cup pure organic beeswax, 1/2 cup unrefined shea butter, 1 teaspoon sweet almond oil, 1 teaspoon coconut oil, 10 drops peru balsam essential oil.
    You can add a bit more oils if you wish, as this recipe is somewhat flexible. The fix'n wax does not become too hard with the above recipe, but I do prefer mine to remain a little more solid. If you would like for it to be a little more like putty, just double the oil or add more shea butter. You can also add vitamin E oil, and use your imagination. Just remember not to use too much oil, as this will make the final product too soft.
    How I cook:
    I use an old steel pan I plan not to use for anything else. Place the stove burner on low heat, be patient and do not cook too fast! Maintain awareness at all times. Place the shea butter and beeswax into the pan first. Wait until the beeswax melts; the melted mixture should be a dark, golden color. Add your oils and gently swish or stir. Remove from heat and allow to sit for a couple minutes. If you start to see the mixture begin to wax over, start pouring immediately. Use your containers and be aware of the fact that this wax mixture will be HOT!
    _______________
    WHERE TO BUY:
    For those who care not to make their own, I can recommend a similar product for around $4: www.selfrelianceoutfitters.com...
    The ingredients for this product are unknown, since the maker chooses not to share the information, which is their right I suppose.
    Another type I have known to seal clothing is "Greenland Wax", but it isn't quite as versatile. You can conduct a web search for this if it is more to your liking.
    _______________
    Fix'n Wax Storage:
    After several years, I imagine this has the potential to dry out. Therefore, if you plan to store pre-made fix'n wax, be certain to seal it in an airtight container, or inside a tin with wax paper to prolong its use.
    Uses:
    You can use this fix'n wax for minor skin applications, on the metal of tools and blades, on wood, leather, anything you wish to seal or protect. You could even treat canvas with this wax. Alternatively, this could also be used as a fire starter additive.

    Thanks to you dude, I made one can of fixn wax and since then have sold dozens of cans of my own hand cream recipe. I now have a stellar wax that I use on my guns/bows/knives and cutting board **People, keep in mind you can make your own recipe without measuring. 70% beeswax will yield a firmer wax and 50% will do a firm salve, 30% gets into hand cream/lotion**

    Thank you for your video. I am going to make my own. Could you explain why you used the 2 oils and 1 essential oil? You mentioned the antiseptic properties in the balsam, but lavender has some as well and I have some on hand. Is it for the smell as well?

    Lavender oil also has pain relieving properties. It might be something good to add in the case of minor scrapes and cuts in addition to the Peru Balsam oil.

    Did you add the striker to the sheath of your knife? I didnt see it as an option on the knife. Also I was wondering if tea tree oil would work in place of balsa oil as it has antiseptic qualities as well.

    do you recommend ivory or yellow shea butter? from what i've read the yellow is more pliable and ivory is more friable. I'm just guessing now but would the consistency of the yellow create a better textured product? Or would it increase the risk of going rancid faster if kept in a backpack while outdoors most of the time?

    I was wondering if this recipe is also good for water proofing canvas. I've seen recipes with bees wax,boiled Lind seed oil and turpentine but that recipe has less uses due to it not being good for putting on skin or consumption which could happen if I put wax on my knife blade.I got everything in your recipe and decided to put eucalyptus essential oil as a bug repellent. Great video thanks for this recipe!

    • @HorizonsleatherBlogspot2012
      @HorizonsleatherBlogspot2012  7 років тому +3

      Thank you! Yes, to waterproof large areas of a natural fabric like cotton canvas, it is necessary to use a solvent like turpentine (the smell dissipates with a little time) or linseed oil, or even a combination of each with the wax. However, you can use this recipe I described for seams. The problem with covering a large area is that the wax will crust heavily (even when applied hot) once it dries. The addition of a solvent will break the wax down to allow it to penetrate the fiber. Good luck!

      I've never tried it. As long as it's pliable when dry, it will work. I add other oils to help keep it soft and supple, like a woman's cheek. ;)

    Thanks for the video !
    But how much $ is it for the ingredients in your country and how many mililiters for the oils ? :) just my interests !
    And i heard that shea butter could be a little smelly xD

    • @HorizonsleatherBlogspot2012
      @HorizonsleatherBlogspot2012  9 років тому +2

      MondOger Oh, shea butter is quite potent, but I love the scent. I would say it is not too expensive, but it depends where you shop. I buy most ingredients off Amazon and total cost was around $30 with shipping. But, I can make enough for a lifetime, too. Measurements are kind of simple, start off with equal amounts of beeswax and shea butter and if you want it to be softer, lessen the amount of beeswax. The rest of the ingredients are negligible, and it is up to you.

      HORIZONS thanks for the answer !
      but i ment how many ml are in the bottles you buy ? :)
      in the shops I found I can choose between 100 ml / 250 ml / 500 ml ^^
      and the costs just surprised me and I just wanted to know if its a "fair" price

    Could you please add links to the sites you purchase all your ingredients from? I've done a few google searches on some of the oils you listed. I'm reading a lot of reviews of fake oils and what not.
    You seem to know a lot about natural oils and I would like the buy legit stuff. Thanks.

    • @LOADEDF1ST
      @LOADEDF1ST 10 років тому

      What I meant to say is direct links. I went on Ananda Apothecary site and its really hard to navigate around. I could not find " Sweet Almond Oil " anywhere!

    • @HorizonsleatherBlogspot2012
      @HorizonsleatherBlogspot2012  9 років тому +1

      LOADEDF1ST I apologize for missing your comment. I would do an Amazon search if I were you, lots of great deals. What you need to do is search for your item/oil with ORGANIC in the title. Here's some sweet almond oil (organic) for example: www.amazon.com/Sweet-Almond-Oil-Aromatherapy-Satisfaction/dp/B00K4PLC30/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1433574442&sr=8-1&keywords=almond+oil+organic TRY to remember, you always want PURE, RAW, ORGANIC oils if you wish to keep this safe to use. If you do not mind the additives and do not have children or whatever your reasons, go for what you find best suits your needs. If you have further questions, I will be around.

    Only issue is that there is no such thing as "organic" beeswax. You may treat your hives organically, but you cant determine where the bees go, so you cannot call beeswax/honey organic.
