  • There is an error on the original recipe stated in this video, when I originally copied it down it was incorrect. The recipe calls for 1 ounce of Cocoa Butter, not 10 ounces as stated. I have been making this with too much cocoa butter. It did not negatively effect the wax, just smelled very chocolatey. Future batches I will just use the original and correct recipe from Medic317:
    8oz yellow beeswax
    3oz Shea Butter
    1oz Cocoa Butter
    1/4 Cup Coconut Oil
    1/4 cup + 2 tsp Olive Oil
40 or so drops Peppermint Oil
Fix'n wax is a great protectant for wood, leather, steel. Great for bows and bow strings. Also works well for dry cracked hands, cuticles, and chapped lips. Make a batch with this recipe that smells like a hint of chocolate from the cocoa butter. Awesome stuff.

I made a couple batches of Fixin Wax now, and I am sold. It really does work great for so many things. I have a huge beard and it's great for keeping its shape. While using it on my beard I started putting some on my face in places where it was aggravated, red, flaking skin... to the point my condition was embarrassing. It looked like I had a disease going on and it was around my nose and mustache. After applying for a week or so the redness was nearly gone and no more skin flakes. Today there is nothing there, skin looks great, my hands are soft and free of cracks... and these are working hands... 7 years ARMY and 10 years foundry life with some metal fabrication in between, these hands have been through it. Thanks Grey Beard!

Get your hands on an old muffin tin and use the cupcake papers to line it with, then tuck them in the freezer for an our and they drop right out (use the waxed papers) - I use an old aluminum tea kettle also for neatness in pouring and less spillage...

Thanks for this video. Looks like a great balm! I will have to try this.
Looks like everyone is sharing their personal recipes, so here is mine:
    Four parts beeswax
    Three parts pine rosin
Two parts light or heavy mineral oil (for use on skin) or linseed oil---boiled or raw (for use on wood, metal, or canvas) or mink oil (for use on leather)
Melt the beeswax in a water bath, add in the pine rosin, stir in the (mineral, linseed, or mink) oil.
In any use of beeswax, I recommend carefully keeping it just at the melting point, around 150 to 155 deg. F..
Add a tidge more or less oil to adjust consistency to suit your desires.
    Again, thanks for this video.

Nice video; adjustment for the Cocoa Butter noted. I make wax lubes for my lead alloy cast bullets. One suggestion regarding pouring the hot wax. Try a large turkey baster instead of handling a hot pot and pouring. I have a glass baster and a aluminum baster. Each one has its advantages. This was widely used back in the 18th Century here in the US. A 50/50 combination of just beeswax and rendered suet (kidney fat) . Saw the making of it on Jas Townsend and sons here on you tube. Another person on survival Russia made a similar product with the same 50/50 mix but added pine tar as a repellent. The fat trimmings off the hind end of wild hog or venison works well too if you first render it. Nice thing is you get some nice cracklins. Thanks.

You mentioned the beeswax was cosmetic grade. While there are no real laws or guidelines that are required by the government for companies to grade their products in this fashion. Cosmetic grade is not usually the best quality. Therapeutic or food grade is a higher quality product. Cosmetic grade beeswax is often bleached to make it look better or more even color and then a "natural dye" added to make it look yellow or sometimes left white. Yours may not have been but many are. If you want one that is a higher quality look for food or therapeutic grade and organic. Otherwise they can contain pesticide/herbicides or other chemicals. Sometime chemicals are used to make it softer or melt faster. For most of what you mentioned the cosmetic would be ok but if you are going to use it on your skin or as lip balm etc. I still use food grade for everything I make, that way I don't have to worry about how I am going to use it. And the term "natural" is not a regulated term. Organic is a better label to look for when buying any wax or oils. I use many of the same ones in the skin care products or in salves I make.

I just made a batch tonight. The only thing I can think might happen is the olive oil getting rancid. But there’s such a high proportion of solid fats/waxes that it’s not likely to be noticeable.

Also saedinia had olive tree blight issues and import companies can be thus listing but quality issues in olive oil overpaying low quality scandal Sunflower oil is equivalent to olive oil in properties and shelf stability. I coat or season my cast iron pans w grapeseed oil you could use in lotion too bc prevents hydrocarbons cooking heating like the vinegar marinade does

The wax sounds great...for home use...but I'd be a bit worried about using it in bear country. Or near mice....or porcupines. Have you run into any wildlife issues with this recipe?
I've read that bears do not like "pine oil" so that may be an option instead of peppermint. Most of my leather kit is treated with a wax/pine pitch blend. I'm not sure if that makes a difference, but I haven't been eaten by a bear yet.
I eat coconut oil, cocoa butter, and olive oil. So I'm guessing that bears do too. And I guarantee they eat beef tallow. Mice will pretty much eat anything. Bears can smell tasty things from far far away. A nice aromatic smell like cocoa butter should be detectable by a bear from a good dozen miles away if the wind is right.
I don't think it's been proven, but I suspect that if you dropped a few mice on Mars, they could smell almond oil on the South shore of Lake Ontario and all points further south. And don't think for a minute they wouldn't find a way back to planet Earth and that nicely oiled leather sheath and chew it up by the time you woke the next day.
For field protection of my axes, saws, and knives, I use a food grade mineral oil from the drug store. Just a drop or two. A small bottle will last ages. For first aid, I like plain ol' vaseline. (I betcha bears would try vaseline for breakfast, but I don't think the smell would be quite as attractive to them.) I use various potions for leather treatment at home, but don't bring any along to camp. Montana Pitch blend or Hubbard's Shoe grease do well for me. I have a special proprietary blend to treat my Kennetrek boots. Probably some silicone or something in that.
I once made a batch of stuff like your Fix'n wax as a beard wax. Fun little project, and my beard lay flatter, but I wouldn't wear it out into the woods.

I have never had an issue with it at all. I am in Black Bear country. I might reconsider it if I were in an area with Grizzly. I carry food in my pack that I would be more worried about
