- Historically humans have depended greatly on animals for food. Deer, buffalo, fish, rabbits and other game animals come to mind but what about those little six-legged creatures that are so prominent all around the world. Yes, grasshoppers and other insects are a great and rather tasty survival food. Many cultures around the world relied heavily on insects for essential protein, fats and other nutrients. In this video, grasshopper season is here but I’m specifically hunting the big plains lubber grasshopper (I erroneously labeled them as "prairie lubbers" in the video) and I’ll show you an easy way to cook them for a nutritious meal. I call them “desert mountain lobsters” because of their lobster-like appearance and mild flavor similar to lobster tail. This series will be ongoing so be sure to stay tuned for the next video.

Who films you?
Me. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything, all alone. On a few occasions I may be accompanied by a friend, but that has been very rare.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share locations.
Where did you get your sandals?

Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently to collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work well and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.
How many languages do you speak?
My first language is English but I also speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. I also speak very little Russian. I may soon begin learning more languages.
How old are you?
I was born in 1972. At the time of this video I was 49.
Where did you get the music in your videos?
This series is the first one that I am making all the music myself. I recently made a drum and maracas (rumba shaker). I am now using them to create the intro and ending music in my videos, but before in the past I have used royalty free music from several sources including UA-cam. It's typically summer when they are most common. They taste like asparagus/shellfish and make the best bait for fishing!
As a professional feather collector I actually don't recognize those. Definitely a bird of prey of some kind. Those feathers too can make an excellent lure for fishing!
I remember the point where I let go of my idea of what good meat and food is. I'm so lucky I've been able to taste as much as I have!

You could make a dreamcatcher with those feathers, some of those flexible sticks you make baskets with, and some cordage.
There are a LOT of crafts he could make from the resources around him. But he only has so much time, and needs to spend it on more practical pursuits, like things that feed him, clothe him, house him, protect him, or make his work easier.
It's Just a waste of resources.

Guys, it was just a suggestion. I just saw feathers, and it was the first thing that came to my mind because I have dreamcatchers all over my room, and I thought they would make his house look cute when he was done with it. Besides, didn't he say that there's more to life than surviving. There's also thriving, and what better way to thrive than to make things aesthetically pleasing. Now there's no need to poke fun at other people's religions that they are passionate about. Especially the religion that Chad himself follows. He even prayed to God and gave thanks for those grasshoppers. It probably would be a waste of resources. What do I know? It was merely a suggestion, and no harm was intended.

Some of the things said here bothered ME too, as I happen to BE a Christian. And it bothers me that someone would think that would be considered some kind of idol worship. We don't worship the symbol, nor do we pray to it. It's only a representation of the God we have a relationship with. Kind of like hanging a picture of your mother or your grandchildren on your wall. Your relationship ISN'T with the photo, it's with the person the photo represents.

Really liked that handy box you wove! That might even work as a grasshopper cage to keep the grasshoppers in while you collect them.
It's always a good time seeing the trials and limitations that you learn and set for yourself. It's interesting and that head nod after eating the second grasshopper made me start to wonder what they'd taste like myself. Keep strong.
If they taste like lobster truly taste similiar when someday I try them im unsure of anything stopping me from having a grasshopper farm... or hunting grasshoppers every so often 😅 I LOVEEE lobster & he really made me kinda wanna try grasshoppers now.

Just an idea, but maybe weave something like a flyswatter to stun the grasshoppers so you can catch them a little more easily. Also, maybe those feathers can be used to make a lure for those elusive fish

So, I am curious... what are the mental/spiritual effects of living (part of) your life in this way. I mean you eat different food, you solve problems in a "primitive" way... It’s always a bit hard to see these animals made ready for getting eaten. But I know that you kill them to get food and necessary resources and not for anything unnecessary. Which makes it much easier to watch. Also because of your good way of showing it in your videos and all your knowledge.

It is difficult for me to kill an animal. I wish I could just eat leaves and survive but humans and many other animals just aren't designed that way.

I was once ate fried grasshopper and get allergy,my skin became itchy especially my face area.
He's so lucky to have strong stomach and immune system. 👍🏻
those of us who are allergic to shellfish are also allergic to most insects, they have the same allergen proteins.

but a friend of mine said you could use the carapaces of certain grasshoppers for pigment after baking them in a vessel
cant remember what color it resulted in but it could be a interesting thing to look up when you have some spare time

i always wanted to try grasshopper. i've tried some sour cream and onion style crickets and they weren't half bad. still doesn't meat the same like sour cream and onion potato chips but i would still eat them again. i learned from survival man how to prepare them and cook them in the wild, taking their head off was one of the steps then carefully skewer them on a stick and slowly roast them over a fire. those bird feathers are gorgeous, i wonder what bird they are from

It seems that the flavors of Crab 🦀 and Lobster 🦞
are what several bugs taste like from what I keep hearing.
I watched a video a long time ago of these bug hunters
they hunted bugs for classrooms....
they were in the jungle and they got lost
so they had to eat they bugs they caught to survive.
One of the bigger beetles they said tasted like Lobster 🦞
and it's cooked flesh looked like Crab meat 🦀
Tarantula leg meat looks like crab 🦀 meat.
I also heard that those bugs I call rollie pollie bugs because they roll into a ball
that they taste like Crab 🦀 as well.
My other thought about the bugs eating your seeds is
we do have to share with nature sometimes don't we they have to eat too 🤷♀️
My mom has a couple of fruit trees 🌳
every year she has to share with the birds and pinture bugs
just wash them off and eat their leftovers 🙂
