Making a candle extinguisher: • Making a candle exting...
In this video I restored an oil lamp which was designed in the 19th century. These type of lamps were called "Frosch Lampe" in german. "Frosch" means frog in german btw. These lamps were also called "Grubenfrosch" which can be translated into "mining frog".
I bought it from an online auction and the seller told me that it was found in a basement of an old house hanging from the wall while the house was renovated. Unfortunately I couldn't find out in which year this particular lamp was made.
Overall it was a fun project even though there was not much variety. Mostly it is like that when restoring brass objects.
The work on the project took about 25 hours (inclusive filming) plus about 25 hours of editing.
If you are willing to support me leave a comment, subscribe and share my work, I really appreciate and it helps me a lot!
I hope you will have some fun watching the video! If you have any further questions on the process, tools, material or else write a comment, I will try my best to answer your questions.
Until next time :)

19th century "Frosch 107" oil lamp restoration I Dr. Hut of Handcraft - Розваги
I absolutely love that you RESTORED this lamp. The whole purpose of restoration is to hopefully get as close as possible to it’s former glory or like new state. If not restoring or keeping all the “age” on the item, you would then just wipe it off and showcase it on a shelf somewhere. But I want to see these beautiful items restored and hopefully around for another 100 or so years. How else can we see, watch and learn from our history or past. Thank you for your hard and meticulous work, it is greatly appreciated!!!! BRAVO, ITS BEAUTIFUL!!!! 👏👏👏👏💯💯💯💯❤️❤️❤️❤️🇺🇸✝️🇺🇸👍👍👍
Thank you so much for your kind words !
Given that much of that "patina" was actually grime, I think you did fine. Great restoration!
Thank you!
Great job as ever. I like how the casing looked after the glass bead blasting. Sweeeeeet work my friend.
Thank you!
doc, i like your video because you washed them first 👍
😄 Thank you!
Great restorations, more videos please.
Thank you!
I am already working on a new project, in the meanwhile you can check out the other videos on my channel and the videos on my second channel “Dr. Huts Lab”. Enjoy!
I love the look of brushed brass…great job. 👏🏻😀
Me too!
Thank you for your comment !
love the brushed brass look. Not all restorations have to be mirror finished.
Glad you like it !
Great restoration as always 👍👍
Thank you!
You are a perfectionist.
Thank you for your comment! 🙏🏼
Love to watch all of your activities, it's superb Sir.
Thank you!
It looks great and you did a masterful job restoring it as well!!!!
I enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thank you for your support!
Beautiful restoration! You always go above and beyond to get a perfect result. I love your videos. Cheers from Australia. 🤗🇦🇺
Much appreciated, thank you!
Amazing work considering the issues you had a while back with your workshop. I think you mentioned breaking something during a restoration, and this must be the video. I think you did the beautiful piece justice by carefully sandblasting and giving it a brushed finish. There was no way to save that patina (corrosion). Thanks for finding such a unique piece for us.
Thank you for your comment, glad you liked it!
The project you mean was a different one which I unfortunately had to stop completely. Maybe one day I will find a spare part to finish that project 😄
You quoted Dumbledore. I had to sub
😄😄🪄
The small things are always the trickiest, great brass work, nice. .
Thank you!
Sandblasting the brass made short work of the corrosion. Beautifully done though, sir.
Thanks mate, appreciate your comment!

FanTAStic Dr. Hut 👏👏👏. A beautiful old thing, given a new lease of life to carry on being used (current Health & Safety regs concerning open flames aside 😁). Really well done 👉👉👉. 😎
Thank you so much!
"Mining lamp" .. open flame. Better hope you don't hit any gas pockets.
Beautiful work, as always.
😄😄 thank you!
I was looking for a comment like this. Not only do you run the risk of hitting a gas pocket, but you also run the risk of not having enough oxygen for the miners deep in the shafts
Wow, gorgeous work. Woman, Life, Freedom forever❤
Thank you 🫶
Brilliant job my friend. Never seen anything like that before. Well done 👍
Thank you mate 🙏🏼
Hello mister beautiful restoration good job well done
Thank you!
Very nice refurbishing work. I like the end looks very much. Never seen such a lamp, but interesting how it was made. Thumbs Up!
Thank you!
Perfect work, congratulations my friend. You gained a subscriber. Mother of strength too, thank you.
Thanks a lot for your support!
I collect miners lamps being an ex coal miner, but I have never seen one like that.
Cool!
Best❤

Filing the castingmarks away and removing the patina and hence the historical connection with the past does hurt in a way. I'm glad you didn't give it the epoxy/powdercoat treatment. The craftmanship however is excellent and it's fun to shed some light on a Frosch-lamp 🙂
Totally understandable, it’s a matter of taste I guess 🤷🏻♂️ Thanks for your comment!
Top 🎉🎉🎉

Very good restoration!! But please, never grind NFM on a wheel. It can build up and explode!!
Thank you!
Like I said in the video the grinding wheel isn’t the tool for that job but at that moment I didn’t have another suitable option. I will probably get a proper belt sander soon.
But you’re totally right, definitely not recommended 😄
Sorry I missed that in the comments.. Keep up the good work!!! I really enjoy your work when it pops up
@@christiaanedeling9896nothing to be sorry about 🙂 Thank you, I appreciate it!
красота. спасибо.

My OCD would require me to polish that brass to a mirror shine.
😄😄
👍👍👍

What brand of taps did you use?
They are from “Wexo” I think. A friend gave them to me.
I also have cheap ones from the hardware store, they also do the job most of the time.

Glad you liked it 🙂

Nice job, but you are not supposed to grind brass on a grinding wheel. The same goes for aluminium, copper, bronze, etc. Don't take my word for it, check it yourself. Nice post 👍
I know, thats why I said that it is not the proper tool for this job 😄 But that’s what I had at the moment and luckily it worked. Thank you for your comment, much appreciated!
I hate brass
Lol why 😂
Appreciate all your work and obvious skill but now it looks too new for my tastes…like a Chinese knock off. Clearly others disagree with my opinion.
Totally okay, I guess it’s a matter of taste 🙂 What would you’ve done differently?
This time the result isn't good in my opinion ( by the way: your work is perfect as ever) but with sandblasting and cleaning you take away the patina of this peace of history. Now it looks ordinary as all we can buy today ... I'm sorry for ... hope you understand what I mean
Totally understandable, I guess it’s a matter of taste 🙂 Thank you for your comment!
I agree. It looks like a modern version of something now devoid of it's character. I do this stuff IRL as a hobby, possibly might make it into a business, and I hate sanding brass parts, but I do polish brass parts because I like the look of polished brass in most instances. I like to leave the surface imperfections as that really looks nicer than today's stuff.
@@foxfire8284 that’s totally okay, it’s a matter of taste 😄 Me for example I can’t stand the look of polished brass or other metals 😄
@@DrHutOfHandcraft ah. Ok. I can respect that then.
For the first time I didn’t like your restoration 😢
What didn’t you like? 🙂
