A wonderful, short-lived car! I still have my 1990 90 20v. Never letting it go. The normally aspirated 2.3 5cyl 20v 7A engine is a gem. Eager, smooth, bulletproof and sounds brilliant. The rest of the package is well designed, well engineered, solid and unfussy. Individual and characterful. Mine is not a quattro but a fwd - still good fun 👍

I spent a lot of time in my father in law's 1986 4000 Quattro Sedan, dark Graphite Gray, fully optioned, 5 speed, black leather interior which is essentially the same in line 5 cylinder, 10v no turbo fuel injection engine with 5 speed stick shift, chassis and suspension with lockable center and rear diffs. An absolutely sublime little terror of a car! Balls out in all weather and road conditions, supreme comfort for a driver and three passengers and luggage in mud, rain and snow. LOVED that car! At the time, in the mid 80s and into the early 90s, Quattro was king - I don't have to mention the Group B Rally dominance or the unique quality and aura that these cars exuded. Now, very few of these cars even exist and to come across ANY period era Quattros, coupes or otherwise is rare (I particularly love the 5000 Avant Quattro Wagons). The driving experience compared to modern cars is admittedly less refined but the elegance and muscular nature of these cars is marvelous. You just have to drive one to understand. Great post - thank you!

I’m the very lucky owner of an RR ur quattro, which is factory original, and rust free, having lived all it’s life in New Zealand (one of 3 sold new here), and for the last 8 years has been dry stored in my custody. 178,000kms (111,000mi). Still ticks over like a Swiss watch and brings a grin to my face every time I drive it (which is not often enough!). I've dreamt of owning a Quattro for over 10 years. 1981 Quattro in Red or Silver with the faded 4 rings logo on the side and the grey "dashed" fabric interior. Completely stock except for the more modern counter-sunk wheels that the car in this video has. I know considering at 23 I will never ever get to own one as non-electric cars will be a thing of the past very soon and the prices of these just keep going up, but it's not stopping me from hoping that one day I could get very lucky. Good heavens - a journo that actually knows something about the car...Thinking this is now part of the Audi UK fleet as the Tornado Red one they have still has its' delivery wax on the engine. This one needs a bit of TLC on the drivers seat and a good engine detail. Glad he liked the orange digital dash; many people do not and prefer the analogue dials, not least the editor of the old Audi magazine. It was years ahead of its' time and still looks good today. Front and rear shots of the silhouette of the car are superb and the 20v engine - torque from 1950 rpm. I once took an RS2 for a test drive in 1994; couldnt believe the huge turbo lag and unnecessary 6 speed box. Sales rep wasnt impressed when I told him the 20v was better. The forged wishbones are only on the front (same as RS2) - pressed steel on the rear. Great GT car and long distance tourer with loads of space - just let the turbo cool for a few mins after driving ;-)

You didn’t mention the clutch or the brakes…which was good! I had the 2nd gen 10valve and then the 20 valve. I thought that the clutch seemed heavy compared to 90s era quattros, but the brakes were good for road use-certainly nicer than the over-servoed 90s & Noughties ones. But the best thing about the UR was the connection to the rally cars and the pioneering spirit of engineering.

For driving a dozen times a year I'd have this. To actually use, the S2 is the one I'd go for.
