RAC Rally 1985 - I was one of the stage marshals and bore witness to Hannu Mikkola's Sport E2 passing by me within a short distance when its exhaust exploded spitting out flames a good half metre behind. Unforgettable, and my all-time favourite car. 0-60 mp/h in 2.5 seconds............ON GRAVEL........35 years ago! Kinda sums it up really
I marshalled at Rally Australia in 95 or 96 (getting old can't remember!) and had Stiq Blomqvist retire near my marshall point. I offered to give him a lift back to the start of the stage. I'd driven to the stage in my nearly new Celica GT-Four Group A Rallye. He and his co-driver were a bit hesitant getting into the car as it had been raining and they had mud all over their shoes. I couldn't have cared less! How often do you get the chance to drive a rally legend around. He was a great bloke.
These classic Quattros still put out one of the best sounds ever when modified, I “only” filmed a replica and it blew me away! so jealous you got to try the real thing 👌🏻
Henry makes driving a toaster an emotional experience, so seeing and hearing him wax poetic on the S1 is just outstanding. Beautifully shot, scored and edited, too. As always.
I suspect the slightly front heavy 55:45 weight distribution was caused less by the engine’s position, and more because of the steel balls of the driver. What a time for rally. What a time.
There is something that I have always found to be mortally scary about this car. There's a combination of things. Firstly, there are its looks, with all of that big bodywork on a short wheel base, and the brutality of its gait in the way that you can see the weight being thrown forwards under braking, and then thrust rearwards again under the acceleration of all of that power. Then there's that haunting 5-cylinder wail frequently punctuated by a loud, spinning, scything, piercing whistle. And then there's the fact that it carries the halo of the fearsome reputation of Group B. I find it all to be sinister in a way that can be quite troubling, in exactly the same way that a small child is irrationally afraid of monsters: although I've never seen one of these in action other than on video, the monstrous experience feels very real to me. I would mentally have a problem stepping inside one of these, and yet I hold it up as one of my most hallowed motorsport icons, just for the way that it never fails to make an impression.
This is why I drive an Audi RS3. The history and that 5 pot sound, nothing on the road today comes anywhere near it and no better sound on a rally car either from the SWB Sport. Love it. Just love it. My all time favourite car and so lucky to have seen them race too.
I've seen journalists dive the most expensive, fast and rare cars but i never really felt anything, this, however was the first time ive ever been jealous of someone getting to drive such a machine! Thank you for creating this video, modern footage of this majestic beast is hard to come by and we all appreciate the work you guys do!
Carfection content tells you that these guys are real petrol head. They make video to share their passion, not to promote new cars for manufacturers like most other channels
My first memory of a rally was when I was about 5 or 6 with my dad and seeing these cars come through the stage just sparked a life long passion! They all sound a million times better when you are a few feet from the side of the track the noise and smell it's just pure emotion for the senses! I'd give me left kidney for ten minutes in the S1!!
It’s true the 5 cylinder sound is so evocative. I owned a couple of T5 Volvos, the on Boost sound and performance was utterly addictive. The only reason I don’t still have one is running costs! Oh to be a wealthy man... thanks again Henry, nice trip down memory lane.
Fab piece which makes my mind boggle trying to comprehend what the drivers back in the day were putting themselves and the cars through flat out on incredibly challenging rally stages. This truly will never be repeated in competitions.
I’ve watched this video twice now and with each viewing I felt transported into the car with you. Now that’s what automotive journalism is all about and you sir, absolutely nailed it.
My highest of regards to the absolute monsters that the Group B era drivers were. I simply cannot imagine what it must've been like to thunder through small roads, dense forests, dust storms and, of course, crazed people lining the stage. To be able to drive one of these mechanical monsters must've been an absolutely surreal experience. God, I get chills when thinking about that era, even if I wasn't born to experience them. Mr. Catchpole, your videos are absolutely stunning, and they are true gems of the automotive world. Also, HUGE props to the Carfection team for shooting such spectacular shots and incorporating beautiful editing. Be it the intro with the TT, Quattro and the S1 E2, or the binaural audio ending for the two five-cylinder engines. I, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for making this video.
My dad had a front wheel drive 87 Audi Coupe GT with the manual inline five. I just loved that car. It was so rare in the US. Even the Audi mechanics at the dealer would come to look at it when we went to the shop. People just loved the look and sound. I always wanted a quattro, but I would take that gem back in a heartbeat. He put 230k miles on it. It was a great car.
I remember seeing these at Goodwood in the 90’s, grown men flocked around it, excited, jumping up and down as they warmed it up. Remember my Dads excitement at seeing it, this car is in that bracket (Brm v16, 787b, mclaren senna v12) the bracket that makes grown men shed a tear or run towards it as soon as they hear it fire up. If you know, you know! 😍
I just found this channel. I wondered where Henry Catchpole had gone too. One of the great automotive journalists of this era. Knowledgeable and you can FEEL how much he loves cars.
I never really was an Audi fan.. hated working on them if I had to. But this, this is 80s glory. The Lancia Delta is king, but this one set the standard. Respect!
Thanks for sharing. Excellent production - well done to all involved. I owned an RS2 for 11 years - I made sure it went to a good home. I now drive an original RS3 - only because they made an in-line 5 turbo. It’s great they keep it for their special models too. I don’t think I’ll every get rid of it.
@@Rentta well all really takes is a TTRS put on a diet & some extra power and a more rear bias 4WD & excessive aero, they have the base car & all the parts. I don't think they would lose money but they wouldn't make much profit.

Then you remember the videos of narrow roads flanked by walls of people ten, twenty people deep, and these things being flung sideways around curves at speeds that seem impossible...
Badass. The one with the PDK box and working Umluft setup still exists in Europe, that thing would be a whole other level to this one that doesn't have either (but is still one of the coolest cars ever!)
Dear Henry, THANK YOU 🥰👍🇫🇮 Being now 57, I have experienced all those group B cars driving at Thousand Lakes Rally! NEVER FORGET THE SOUND OF THAT 5 cyl, NEVER 😁😇
Thank you Carfection and Henry for giving us this immersive experience of the S1 E2! What a rare opportunity you had to drive this beast, and I will be watching this over and over again in the years to come, I'm sure! The sound of that turbo 5 cylinder has been giving me chills for nearly 40 years!!
The "chirping" sound is not wastegate, or bypass/blowoff (these cars didn't have a bypass or blowoff valve) it's compressor surge.. When the throttle closes, the boosted air stops at the butterfly, and the back surge of air stops the turbo spinning momentarily. Note that the factory rallye cars had the boost pipes mechanically connected via hooks, to keep the rubber hoses from flying off of the carbon hard pipes.
The growling of a I5 is one of the best engine sounds one can experience. Sure it is not a F1 V10, but is an engine that you actually can have. I had two in the past and it is part of my automotive memory.
"I've driven quite a few rally cars". That's a not very humble brag if ever I've heard one. Awesome video as always. I never realised they pur a PDK in these a nice little history lesson.
The pinnacle of Group B for me, and the car I would buy if my numbers should come up. Having watched these on the stages back in the day, it's a sight and sound I will never forget. Acceleration from a standing start on gravel was something to behold.
Group B created some incredible and insane creations. This the T16, RS200 etc. But my absolute favourite due to its crazy looks and heavenly engine/exhaust note was definitely the 6R4. What a beast, like a standard Metro had been pumped full of steroids! So many fantastic cars that came from such a short lived series.
The Audi Sport Quattro S1 EVO, the car that changed rally and pioneered the sport in a way that would affect the development of all rally cars that superseded it. Its introduction of awd and f1 inspired aerodynamics was truly revolutionary and changed the sport forever.

I was lucky enough to see Michelle Moutons ex works S1 at the classic car show in Birmingham around 10 years ago , such a special machine and my favourite car of the entire show. I particularly like the fact that Roland Gumpert was the race director for Audi sport back then adding even more provenance to its legendary status. 👍👍👏👏
Very fortunate (old) to have seen all the Group B cars on various RAC Rallies. They were awesome especially listening to the gear changes of the Quattro with the auto box.
I'll never forget the sight and sound of Quattro in the early 80's rumbling through our estate.. a very rare sight back then, it just stopped you in your tracks.
Fantastic video of a rallying icon, the sound of that 5 cyl engine is spine-tingling. I used to love watching rallying in the group B era, it just wasn't the same after they were banned.
It was however, not automatic. It was a semi-auto sequential gearbox, something like a modern PDK in manual mode. Also, such gearboxes are older than you might think. Hillman Minx used something very similar in 1960's (called Easydrive) and Eastern-block tractors (and similar machines) used essentially the same thing since 1970's as pre-selector gearboxes.
This is obviously Henry's favourite and most thrashing drive of 2021, to date, I remember watching these in the 80's and Audi announced that some of their cars had close to 800hp at the flywheel to compete with the other cars, ex:Peugeot 205
If ever I find myself in a ‘money no object’ situation, the first big money car I would buy is either an original or replica of one of these. Just fabulous.
I got a redundancy package in 2004/5 and found one of these online. €200k. It was that or set up a business. I chose the business. Big mistake. They're worth mega money now. But I don't care about that. Imagine going to Tesco for milk in one of these. Its my biggest life regret
@@animalcol1 I would love the sheer impracticality. Probably have to warm the engine up for 20 minutes before you could move. Neighbours would either strongly love or strongly hate you. Quite interesting on a snowy commute to work though, I’d guess.
Let's prey that petrol never runs out so that we can enjoy these iconic rally cars. Absolute magical times and I feel very lucky to have watched these at full pelt in the 80s. It'll never be the same again.
My body is tingling, taking me back to days in the forest in the 80s waiting for these glorious cars to appear. One of the best sounding cars ever. The end.
I watched group B in the day & and it was truly amazing… The Audi is my ultimate favourite and yes the 5 cylinder noise is brilliant. You are one lucky man & another great review 👍
If I saw this being filmed in person, it would be very hard to stop me from running into the field and getting as close as I can to Henry's fly-bys while cheering like a madman.
Excellent production and commentary as usual. Henry and the Carfection videographers area masters. Now the car then. I'm a Fiat/Lancia through and through guy when it comes to Rally and particularly the Abarth team regarding Racing in general. To me besides their wining records that speak for themselves as well as the various categories they run simultaneously they were really innovative and good engineering wise. Having said that, I respect the Audi Quattro, it's relevance to the sport and understand it's Iconic status. I love the 5 cylinder sound (which Volvos another brand I like and Alfa/Lancia/Fiat also had) probably the only thing I lust after an Audi both old and modern. However to me the Quattro technically although it introduced the AWD to rallying, was always a bit of a mishmash with a lot of handling flaws and reliability issues that got disguised by its immense power and by the brave and talented drivers. No doubt was the car of the group B to beat (which Lancia did as well as Peugeot) and it deserves all the praise and iconic status. Now then, where's the keys for a 037... :D
2021 the year of the bucket list... Sweet....😎😉 I note the absence of a cup holder and rear visibility, lane keep assist anyone ..oh no its a proper RS. Thanks for sharing..😎
I'm probable putting in more time in it than anyone else. And exactly how it should be. Henry again you have nailed it. Your soft voice overs while wringing it neck is just sensational. Never stop.
I love that snippet about Rohrl ... I first saw the original in Ireland when he did the Ulster, and left everyone else minutes behind ... standing beside it off the start line was honestly scary, it just exuded power ...
I can remember vividly watching one of these through a stage in Bradford’s bowling park in the evening on the National breakdown rally in 1986 spitting flames about 2 feet out of its exhaust and sounding awesome!
I have a lego version of this car sitting right next to me on my desk as I watch this... it's my all time favourite! Also had the pleasure of seeing them driven in person at Knockhill some years ago.
I was shook the first time i saw it pass by on track. Was waiting behind the corner, heard only pure vacuum, followed by a hint of 5cyl note. Then boom 💥 i saw the front one a second then I just saw the taillights and heard the pure 5cyl exhaust note.
I’ve seen a replica of Walter rhörls car at a local rally. Built to original specs and with original plans by Roland Gumpert and driven by Stig blomquist. The car was a monster
One of the best sounding engine in history in my opinion.
The best turbo'd engine for sure!
I rank it with the 787 rotary.
Greatest engine note in motorsports ♥️ all fun n games til a 5 cylinder shows up
The dual tone song of the 5-cyl (and 10 cyl although less pronounced) is sheer magic.

it actually went even further back. Into the 956 and 962 days.
Absolutely awesome....cant imagine driving one of these and I have driven a regular Quattro...
This is obviously Henry's favourite and most thrashing drive of 2021, to date, I remember watching these in the 80's and Audi announced that some of their cars had close to 800hp at the flywheel to compete with the other cars, ex:Peugeot 205
This guy and Chris Harris. My go-to guys. Great content 👍
The end.
I watched group B in the day & and it was truly amazing…
The Audi is my ultimate favourite and yes the 5 cylinder noise is brilliant.
You are one lucky man & another great review 👍
There‘s a small LEGO model of the S1. My nephew liked it :-)
lego speed champions quattro s1!!! so sad its lego variant is not in forza horizon 4 :(
If I saw this being filmed in person, it would be very hard to stop me from running into the field and getting as close as I can to Henry's fly-bys while cheering like a madman.
Once I navigated a rally in a Sport Quattro - mind was blown. Truly bonkers cars
You can keep your Top Gear and Grand Tours. This is all I need.
2021 the year of the bucket list...
Sweet....😎😉
I note the absence of a cup holder and rear visibility, lane keep assist anyone ..oh no its a proper RS.
Thanks for sharing..😎
Stunning production (as always) guys!
I'm probable putting in more time in it than anyone else. And exactly how it should be. Henry again you have nailed it. Your soft voice overs while wringing it neck is just sensational. Never stop.
Great video as per usual Henry 👏. Love the seemless shift from the TTRS to SWB Quattro to the S1 Quattro 👌😎👍
Carfection absolutely living up to the name!
PDK gearbox 0-60 2.5sec ON gravel! ….in 1985. That must of felt bonkers!
I have a lego version of this car sitting right next to me on my desk as I watch this... it's my all time favourite! Also had the pleasure of seeing them driven in person at Knockhill some years ago.
Group B and 3 pedals. What a Glorious rallys times....
I was shook the first time i saw it pass by on track. Was waiting behind the corner, heard only pure vacuum, followed by a hint of 5cyl note. Then boom 💥 i saw the front one a second then I just saw the taillights and heard the pure 5cyl exhaust note.
Reckon Henry is a man who enjoys his job actually really really enjoys his job 😄
Love all of the carbon kevlar that they used back in the 80's. It just has a completely different feel than newer composites.
I’ve seen a replica of Walter rhörls car at a local rally. Built to original specs and with original plans by Roland Gumpert and driven by Stig blomquist. The car was a monster
Absolutely amazing. A legendary car which had legendary drivers. Used to love watching it come through Keilder forest on the Lombard rally.👍🏆
