That is really not how it works here. There are certain incentives to make something as cheap as possible as with every business, yet not drop below a certain set goal of quality and performance at the same time. You have another entertainment giant in Japan, which is Sony that proves your argument wrong with the Playstation brand. Nintendos biggest issue is that they are stuck in the 1990s, they need a fresh perspective on things, and they wont achieve that until they do not open their doors to more voices of opinions, suggestions and possibly a few key changes of people in leadership positions.

    • @mparagames
      @mparagames 3 роки тому +2

@ not always; programs gerenally prefer to use as much ram as they can. If there is more ram avaliable than the program can actually use (ex: there's 4GB of RAM but it only uses a maximum of 1GB in a specific situation); then having more RAM makes no difference. But if there is less, then in order to function properly the program has to use something else to make up for it, a page file; or if there were cached files (that were there for quick access), the program needs to remove them from the ram to free the space for some other task, which can come at a performance cost, because it means it'll have to load those files again when it needs memory for something else, instead of them being already there in the RAM from when it used them before.
In short: having LESS ram than optimal amount hurts performance, having more than that doesn't increase performance, tho
but the switch games seem to be below the optimal amount of ram they need.

That's a thing that Does Not Happen with consoles, and no reasonable person would make a significant course change right now. Even if for some reason they did want to upgrade the SoC, every relevant fabrication line on the planet is tied up until late 2022 at the earliest.

I think it's odd that so many people were expecting Nintendo to ship a new model, with a new Nvidia SOC, in the middle of a global microchip shortage. What would happen, if a switch with the new soc was released, is it would be in very short supply, and most gamers wouldn't be able secure one for a year or 2 after release. I think people are not seeing seeing the full picture with the whole microchip shortage and the are probably down the list for NEWER chips. They probably did what they could since they had everything else and continue using the pre-existing chips instead of risking having shortage of newer chip which means shortage of new console but abundance of last model which causes even more problem, at that point no one will be buying the old model cause they know there is a newer much better model.
At this point in the switch life, is probably best to just go for a complete newer switch 2 instead of an upgrade. A 'pro' version won't make this impossible ports 'possible' as it would need an SSD style technology which would make older switch incompatible with newer games. So might as well just go all brand new gen. Adding more RAM and incorporating nvidia DLSS won't do solve the problem they will face with games using SSD.

What a fantastic idea for a portable system- as you would have to be always connected to the cloud (when on the go) and using extra battery for the increased wifi throughput. I’m not saying those things aren’t doable through hotspots or charging banks, but I personally want my portable games to be playable where there might not be wifi or cell signals. Plus the extra battery usage on my phone (if I’m using it as a hotspot for the switch). And phone data usage (if I don’t have an unlimited data plan). I’m curious if most people use their switch docked or on the go…

From a consumer perspective, what I’m concerned about with this is the fate of backwards compatibility with the next Nintendo generation. If it’s well implemented, then it means the existing games that have performance struggles will be able to shine in time. If not, I’m afraid I’ll be faced with purchasing port after port just to get satisfactory performance, and my ambivalence towards this company will be what really hits a tipping point.

If the next generation of Nintendo consoles are not backwards compatible with Switch, I will not purchase them. It really is that simple for me.
I’ve been an avid Nintendo gamer for practically my entire life. It started with the original Game Boy and NES when I was very young, then quickly evolved from there. Ocarina of Time in 1998 was (and still probably is) my favorite gaming experience. I was fully immersed, and that game shaped the rest of my childhood.
I was actually really hyped for the Switch, at first. Skyrim on the go? That sounds amazing. The problem for me, then, has been time. Skyrim on the go would’ve been practically magic back in say 2012. But, as it stands here in 2021, I have a PS5 and Series X that can play Skyrim in 4K. The Series X can also play it in 60 FPS. It’s just a worse experience on the Switch, and that’s a trend with pretty much every AAA 3rd party game. The Switch version is worse in every way, and I’m not really sure that being portable makes up for it. I only really ever play Switch in handheld when I travel which isn’t very often. When I’m at home, I’d just as soon play Witcher 3 or Skyrim on my Series X.
There’s also the matter of Virtual Console. It’s nonexistent on the Switch. I’m absolutely flabbergasted that all of those games I purchased on Wii and Wii U have to now sit there forever. Nintendo seems intent on re-selling me the same damn games as many times as possible. How many times have I purchased Mario 64 or Ocarina at this point? Probably 5-8 or so times apiece. Meanwhile, both my PS5 and Series X are backwards compatible with the previous generations, and Xbox especially is doing a fantastic job of keeping old games alive with resolution and frame rate patches for free.
If Nintendo won’t allow the new console (which, to be honest, should just be a new iteration of the Switch) to be backwards compatible, then I refuse to support this company anymore. It’s sad to say that, but they are really, really greedy compared to the other console manufacturers. I wish Iwata were here.

    Interesting points to make:
The DS was originally developed as an experimental 3rd pillar, between the GBA and the Gamecube. The only reason it became the GBA's successor is down to its success and backwards compatibility with the GBA library. With the Switch being a literal 3rd pillar (functioning as somewhere between TV Games Console and Handheld), I can see the lifecycle of the Switch being somewhat similar. The DS after all, had a DS Lite and a DSi before its significantly upgraded successor came out. That successor, the 3DS, came out a whole NINE years after the release of the DS. The Switch was never going to have a 'Pro' version out this year, and probably won't for another... let's be optimistic... two to three years.

I see people defending this like "Nintendo marches to the beat of their own drum" or "They never promised anything, we had our expectations too high"
Um, no. No no no. This thing costs MORE than the current Switch model, offers ...a kickstand the Surface Pro 4 had done better 2 years before the Switch, it's offering a comically bad amount of storage still, and they haven't fixed the joycon drift still.
Expectations were so low you could find them in Satan's wine cellar, fix your defective controllers that you charge a ton for.
As for performance, Breath of the Wild struggles pretty hard in some areas, Hyrule Warriors AoC can be dropped to single digits at will, Links Awakening has weird performance problems...and that's the official Nintendo made/approved stuff. Doom Eternal- one of the best running and optimized games ever, struggles.
First party and 3rd party that worked with nintendo & one of the best looking & running games scream the Switch needs help.
I'm not asking for 4K, Switch is a handheld device so I just want the thing to run well when I'm playing the ACTUAL unit, but hoping they could do what they did with the New 3DS where the performance was NOTABLY increased? Yeah, would be nice. Monster Hunter on the new 3DS was both better looking AND running, it was super noticeable.
But instead this just feels like Nintendo chasing that "premium feel" that some people want over performance, which is irritating.
Their OS is a mess, no folders to organize anything, just a single row of branded cheese slices while their last gen system- AT LAUNCH, had folders, the ability to zoom out to see more games.
Again, don't care about 4k, not even remotely what should be the focus. Just, for goodness sakes, this would have been such a nice upgrade if they had even a LITTLE performance upgrade. The fact they're showing off an ethernet port, in 2021 is VERY damning- especially when you see that the Dreamcast included one on the JP launch model in 1998.
I'm not a hater on the Switch, it's my most used console to date, but I'm seeing more and more problems crop up that would have been fixed with even a modest upgrade.
Publishers are gonna start pulling away and hopefully indie devs stick with it. But when they start getting more and more used to the wiggle room PS5/XBSX have...How good are the ports gonna be? Good enough for them to dedicate time vs making new things? Who knows. Vita got that kinda love. I don't want the Switch crumbling like this.

It's easier to get your DC online now, with the community restoring games' online functions, but you need hardware to bypass connection type differences. Things only get worse for PAL regions because of the standards used back then 😔
The Xbox was the first to ship with Ethernet without the need to buy accessories for online functionalities.

Absolutely agree, I'm not a fan of those mid-way upgrades as well. Just wait until there's an affordable way to put base PS4 performance in a handheld and release that one as Switch 2.

Are you sure you’re not confusing ram with hardrive space with those numbers?
The Xbox series X which is the strongest console ever released so far specs wise only has 16 GB of memory ram
How the heck are there phones with 128 GB?

@@demonreturns4336 are you watching the correct video as I’m not talking about the Xbox but about the switch with its 4GB of RAM for 399. If MS and Sony can build a much more advanced console for the same price (720p OLED screen doesn’t cost anything) and phone manufactures can sell phones that are more powerful in every aspect for the same price, Nintendo has no excuses. They are even benefitted as they can take a lesser profit on the hardware as they make money on the games and accessoires, whereas most phone manufactures have to make their profits from the hardware.
Just look at the Steam Deck.
PS: you’re maybe not familiar with phone terminology but 6+128 means 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM. Even manufactures use these terms officially (like OnePlus and Samsung)

This is imo the most reasonable take I've seen about any concerns regarding the Nintendo Switch (OLED model). I appreciate the viewpoint from an actual Nintendo Switch developer and not just... Getting really toxic about it. I definitely can understand where you're coming from. Because this really ISN'T the necessary progress for the Switch to make. Especially for 3rd party developers.
For me, personally, this is just the 3Ds XL and my opinion hasn't changed: My 2017 Switch is mostly fine and I don't need this.
If the "New Nintendo Switch" ever becomes a thing, by then I'll probably need the upgrade. Until then... Cool design. Nice screen. Don't need it.

Nintendo's position is actually very easy to understand. They sold 90 million units, which means they have 90 million customers that will potentially buy games. The secret to leveraging profit from that is not to release new hardware which will allow the few owners of the new hardware to play games, and developers to forget about the constraints of the original switch and release titles that play better on Sony/Microsoft's consoles anyway. It is to stick to the original hardware and force developers to satisfy those 90 million existing customers with games that play well on all switch hardware. That way, Switch games will sell as many copies as possible and Nintendo will get their cut from each sale.

That's only going to work for so long, more and more devs are abandoning the Switch. Performance limitations are also effecting Nintendo's first party games and making for some rather ugly news reports.

Yes and no... I'm a huge fan of the Game Boy myself, but back in the days the gaming market was veeeeery different. Portable devices for actual gaming were either non existent, or insanely expensive and unpractical (remember at that time laptops were a professional only tool). Now with the Steam Deck coming too (which offers insanely more in terms of pretty much everything), Nintendo is going to be left behind if they don't come up with a significantly more powerful and versatile Switch 2 soon.

The gameboy really did suck though..was a total garbage system with that tiny black and white screen, tin sound, and less power than the original NES. It did have metroid, zelda, and kid icarus though and it was amazing what Nintendo managed to do with that crappy system. The main reason people favored that piece o crap was battery life, it was actually portable because it could be played for hours and hours without changing the batteries. It was also neigh indestructible.

The steam tablet appeals to pc players while switch appeals to nintendo fans, kids or a lot of people who just want to play nintendo exclusives. Also even if it is more powerfull its dosen’t really matter since most people don’t give a shit about raw power if they did the og xbox would have won or the ps3 in the 7 gen yet the wii sold a lot more early on. They care about the games they can play on the console, that is why Sony and especially Nintendo put a lot of emphasis on their exclusives.
