    As always Feng proves to be the most active, helpful artist out there. I've been following his work since 2001 when he used to have a tutorial for markers and perspective on his website and without doubt he always helped me evolve as an artist with his smart and well thought teaching.
    Thank you for your continued interest in showing tips, techniques and "secrets" of how to be a better concept artist.

    I started painting recently and almost all brushes had pressure opacity on and I am so thankful for this video. Something had been feeling off to me but I didn't want to question what others were doing too much because I was new. It is getting late here now but I am looking forward to waking up and painting again tomorrow without opacity jitter. Great videos

    Good tips for getting used to your Wacom pen in addition to just drawing a lot is to use your tablet for browsing the web and in "mouse mode" for gaming (especially fps, etc). This helps you learn to use your whole arm. Also do some handwriting practice in Photoshop. Copying a long text like writing an essay into Photoshop trains your finger dexterity very fast. You can't always be drawing 6 hours per day so this helps you learn to use the tablet a lot faster.

    The opacity thing that messes with values has been an awesome tip. Thanks a lot!
    I've always wondered why my paintings look muddy and less solid when it comes to shapes and depth and all that, but this is it. Brush settings and how it affects value in quite bad ways. Now it's time to re-adjust to using none-opacity sensitive brush settings like you've shown and add bounce light and other stuff in afterwards instead of relying on the 'random' stuff that messes the value up. Thanks. xD

    I can also highly recommend Clip Studio Paint - it's beautiful for line drawings, has the BEST free brushes and the ability to create (or download) even very complex, colored brushes (e.g. that create realistic flower garlands or clothing patterns), AND it has integrated 3D models which you can put into any position, light, rotate, and then even transform into a line art or value sketch with a single click. It really has everything I want from a drawing and painting software. What I don't know is if its photo bashing functionality is as good as Photoshop's because I don't use it myself.

    Right, points taken. To me it is like whether one should learn to ride a bike with training wheels, and then learn to ride it without them, or just learn how to ride it from the beginning. My point was that achieving good, sharp results with use of transfer brushes is actually much faster than solid colors, and won't look as muddy as this video makes it out to, and something worth learning from the start, because it takes more practice.

    I agree with you completely that we can learn to use it the right way but Feng has advised us not to use it because there most be a really harsh learning curve to that might as well take up a lot of our time. He managed to master it and since you and I could be potential students, he has advised us to do it the way that still produces really good results. For now the best thing to do would be to try both techniques until you feel comfortable with one. Then later on try the other ^_^

    those are feng's custom colours he has chosen to add to his "swatches" over his time in working in the industry
    if you press F6 and select swatches you will get something similar to feng's colours. (you could also go into the window menu and select swatches)
    and from there u can add custom swatches (colours) by using the Colour Picker tool.

    Also, check out 'EPISODE 18 Character Sketching part1' where Feng uses Transfer extensively, and makes the same point as my experience with clients has taught me - that they more often show a positive reaction to loose, sketchy designs that express energy, and too often get caught up in little details if the finish is too clean, tight and stiff.

  • @bongolongo
    @bongolongo 11 років тому

    It's because of the steep learning curve I suggested practicing it from the beginning, along with other techniques. If you don't put time into it, you'll not get there. I reckon I use it on about 90% of my brushes, and in work for clients ranging from loose sketches to final art, and if I'd never practiced it I think I'd be screwed.

  • @NikHem343
    @NikHem343 12 років тому

    What I really would like to see is how you set up your brushes to draw something like grass or clouds. I don't mean the brush itself, but how you use it. Let me illustrate that for you: When I watch your drawing videos and you draw clouds, it seems like you move along the sky and suddenly there is a natural appearance of smaller and bigger clouds originating from the brush you use. When I try to draw clouds with a fitting brush, all I get is a line or blotch, only with the brush's outlines.

  • @PHeMoX

    @petercourt He's using the number keys (or keypad) as short-cuts for 10%, 20%,30%,40%,50%,60%,70%,80%,90% and 100% opacity.
    You might have to edit the shortkey settings in Photoshop, not sure. I think these are default short cuts actually.

    That's actually a brighter way of looking at it, well I guess it's what we learn huh? No worries, at the end of the way it's the design that matters not the tools, and a tool is as good as it's master.

    Personally, "messy values" is what makes art interesting, as opposed to computer generated vector stuff which is perfect and sterile. With the right swing of the brush, "messy values" generate life and breath, only it takes more practice, so my advice would be to learn it from the start...

  • @Fengdesigns

    Thanks for the comments everyone.
    I don't use the Cintiq. The glass height and my arm blocking the image are the two main reasons. But I'm sure with time, one can overcome these factors. But for now, I'm happy with the Intuos 3 and 4s.

    Your videos are insanely helpful, especially to someone like me who has been concentrating too much on web/graphic design and neglecting to progress my illustrative/painting skills. You mentioned that you manually control opacity with your brushes and not use pen pressure. It seems that you can still run the risk of creating muddy values and forms even using manual opacity changes, how do you combat this?

    Excellent channel. One point here though. I disagree about easily moving from traditional drawing to a standard Wacom tablet. There is a hand eye coordination problem that you will not fully get used to. I don't think your brain ever really gets used to it. You can even see Feng struggling with this occasionally. I found this frustrating and hence I got a second hand 21 inch Cintiq. This is a joy to use. Yes, unfortunately they are expensive but that's just the way it is.

  • @bongolongo

    I'm not talking about plopping textures onto your work, I'm talking about brush strokes. Visible brush strokes. Look at some analogue art - you know, the kind on paper and canvas? Then you should know what I mean. Those texniques can be used in Photoshop too, provided you got some transfer on your brush, and practice it to achieve a style of expression in the strokes.

    Thanks.. I was feeling pretty angry today because of my PS lines and stuff compared to my pencil lines. But this gave me a lot of confidence that I'm going the right direction, it is just about practise and time! I'm beginner and I usually working with pencil and sketchbook to learn the movement of my arm etc. I have to start doing more exercise in PS as well though.. Btw your set-up is kind of out of common range though :D .. 7k PC hmm I can dream about that :P

    Feng Zhu, I really hope you are reading this. You say a ton of times in your videos that you don't show detailing because it's not important and it's boring, the thing is I can easily block out things , like mountains, buildings, etc.. but for some reason I always get stuck with the detailing part, then I'm like "Okay, what now ? , How do I continue from here ?" . My paintings usually read in terms of composition, value, etc,.. from a distance but my detailing feels bad and it seems like I always mess up my paintings from that point,.. could you do a video about how to detail ? Some examples, detail a mountain, a building, water,... Thank you ! Love your videos, been watching them for a few years now.

    Instead of Painter i use Paint Tool SAI. It's a very fast software, the lines are very fluid, doesnt have any lag whatsoever.It has a lazymouse feature like ZBrush.
    The mixing of color is not based on opacity like PS, it actually mixes colors like in reality.Also it works very well with PS, you can save .psd files, it keeps layers, masks, clipping masks, groups, blending modes.You can't do paths, texts or even elipse marquees but for sketching and painting is the best.Have you guys tried it ?

    I am having problems though with mixing colours. Can anyone tell me, in CS5.1 do you have to use the mixer brush to mix two colours. Ie. Using the picker tool to take one colour and mix it over the other...without using opacity?

    Thanks for the videos. I'm looking to learn the fundamentals and so want to use your technique of not using opacity. I would also like to blend colours on in the painting, which would be very difficult without opacity. If a beginner wanted to follow your way, would you say using the opacity in a controlled manner like you say in the video (with numbers on keyboard) they could use that way to blend colors, just so long as it isn't pen pressure. Sorry this was surprisingly hard to word. Basically how should beginners blend colours on the fly, can they use controlled opacity as opposed to pen pressure or would you suggest actually painting all the graduations with seperate colors? THANKS love the vids!

    • @CustardBustard
      @CustardBustard 10 років тому +1

      Some don't like to blend colours with opacity as this does not actually mix the colour, rather it blocks and greys out the colour underneath to a mutual tone, which makes colours muddy and streaky. You are far better learning to pick colours which work, and for this you need to learn some colour theory. Also, if you have some flow variation on your brush with flow jitter turned on, you can just hold alt and pick out the new colour between colours. Try a soft brush and lay down some red then some yellow over a part of it. You should be able to pick the perfect mixed orange from the middle and blend the two together. The more you understand what colours to use in the first place, the less you will have to blend.
