amazing this video is 9 years old. when I first watched it it was 2 years old. now I just enrolled and got accepted 7 years later. can't wait to start!
Haha that's awesome 👌
woah what a cool comment to read.
Give it your best dude im rooting for you!
I hope to $$ be able to pursue it at some point as well.
I just wanted to say, you are an awesome person Feng!!!
This woman is so pretty !
How can anyone work when her beauty shines so brightly ?
Nice tip on using pens rather than pencil --designer/production mentality vs artist. Thanks all who engage with this material here on UA-cam. Thanks to FZDSCHOOL!
@patdzon
FZD full-time students are provided with laptop, Wacom tablet, and software which is included as part of the program fee. These equipments belong to the students during and after the program.
Excellent advice, you are the first person (even with highschool teachers and other tutorials and videos) who has addressed the confidence (not wanting to "ruin" a new sketchbook, feeling the need to erase, drawing small, etc)
Thank you!
wow, so many comments already! Thanks and glad you guys like these videos. Don't worry, I'll always keep these free.
About the information given here. Trust me, about 90% of the stuff we teach at the school are not here, and never will be. I'm showing you guys basic knowledge and certain skills, but not the deep understanding of them. Also, of course you can learn on your own, but without pressure, classmates, and teachers correcting you and answering questions, it'll be a lot harder.
You know that you are taught the right stuff when you apply these techniques as a complete newbie and can create perfect ellipses in less than 10 minutes. Thank you Feng! :)
Hi feng I just want to thank you very much again for your valuable time and reaching out to everyone here who can't make it to your school. All your videos are so useful and appreciated all of us who are struggling to find great training materials find these videos priceless. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. A very big fan..... David Pearce.
Just want to say thanks Feng for making these videos. This one for me was very helpful as I'm new to drawing both traditional and digital. So I appreciate back to the basic tips like how to hold a pen and drawing from your elbow.
Long live the God Hand! Your an inspiration
@mikikurin
FZD School of Design does not provide accommodation. You may refer to the FAQ section on our website for additional information. Thanks!
I found just by looking and copying the way Feng held the pen made a profound difference in the way I could draw ellipses. So dandy. What an awesome channel this is.
I have watched this video at least ten times now, and every time I watch it again, I learn something new!
Wow this... this video is amazing. I've learned SO much by just seeing you draw and your posture. It explained everything better than all the different free sources for fundamentals. I'm really glad I stumbled upon this channel, it reignited my love for concept art, design and drawing overall! I may be late into this thing, since I'm in my early twenties already, but hell it's fun! Thank you so much for all the free and amazing content! Greatest teacher for all those self-taught artists and kids around there!
@KrazyEngima
You may opt out only if you own a Wacom Intuos 3 or 4 tablet and must be minimum medium size. Thank you!
its amazing how changing your posture and the way you hold the pen can change the way you draw and think about what youre doing
That drawing from the elbow technique is dope.
Watched this video back when it was posted in 2011. It is 2018 now. This video is still inspiring and filled with good suggestions. Thank you
Another amazing video. I just had the time to see...Its nice to see you in person for a change...and i am very proud to say that those designs you showed in your big sketchbook were some of the earlier artworks i had seen of yours that inspired me to become a concept artist in early 2000's Thank you soo much for doing this master feng :)
Its cool to see Feng teaching people who are interesting on becoming and artist...It remembers me how many sketch's books I used and a lot memories of how I used to spent hours and hours at night...Hope you can keep up with the videos, I would love to see dynamic sketches of human anatomy...Looking forward to the next video.

Thanks!
I love Pilot pens! They're part of the reason why I still love to use traditional media sometimes. Thank you for this intro video about traditional media (especially in light of concept design/concept art). Thank you for all these videos covering some of the basics and insights of concept art. I'm seriously looking into going to your school sometime in the future.
Thank you for making these inspiring videos and teaching the basics of Graphics Design. I felt I learned a lot from watching your videos and I think you are very admirable. Because you speak the truth about not trying to make Art because that is not your job. Many people do not know the difference between Fine Art and Graphic Design and you clear that up a lot of times. Thank you.
Fundamentals. Excellent tips, sir. Coming from a penciling background, digital drawing came so very easy to me. It's because of that mileage, the countless hours spent trying to represent forms, over and over and over again.
are you some sort of god
confirmed for based god
lol nah I think Syd mead is and frank frazzetta
eruera hohaia-turuwhenua Feng was inspired by Syd and Frank. I'm surprised that he never cited Ralph McQuarrie as an inspiration?? That dude's work on the original Star Wars movies was awesome stuff.
+Prince no this guy is a great artist kim jung gi is a god
kim jung gi tho
This episode, much like every episode, is gold in video form.
@Yamato360

Thanks a lot! This is what I searched for.
Already practised and already made some result!

these videos are priceless.
Your office is amazing!
I don't know about other artists, but for those really fine details in drawings, I usually switch from my elbow to my wrist so I can get the lines in place.
This is the most helpful video you have Feng. Thank you.
You are now my fav designer!!!

Hey Feng!! I have a video request! Would you be able to paint an aerial battle and show us how you would work out the perspective of air crafts twisting in the air and the distant buildings on the ground? Love these videos sir!!
Wow, drawing with the elbow is a great tip! I immediately saw a difference in my drawings! I love these videos, they have been so helpful and interesting. Especially Feng, he is a fantastic and easy to understand educator. :D

Appreciate this so much. Amazing work by you.
We all love your videos (:
Thank you! I always feel guilty when I refuse to show people my sketchbook because I treat it like a journal where I explore all kinds of personal ideas before getting serious with anything digitally. I'm glad long time pros share a similar view.
Great, really been enjoying watching your video's. If I wasn't already working in this field I would definitely consider this course.
Thank you so much Feng!
Hi @Xblgr, the human models are produced by AnatomyTools. Hope this helps!
Hey there, first of all this is a really really good video !
About one year ago my design lecturer told me to practise drawing straight lines on an A3 format paper ... back then i was like "sure...straight lines, yeah -.-" but today i realized it was for practicing my coordination !
I just want to thank you because i can learn so much from your channel and your videos really inspire me to try new stuff ! Thanks :)
I haven't been drawing for maybe more than 7-8 years and after watching your videos I kind of get the inspiration for drawing again, but as I'm finishing high school, it's kinda hard to go back to drawing as I don't have the time.
Nice videos, great skills, awesome school, I might consider it for studying there in Singapore. :)

I wish I could go to your school. But right now i'm all the way in the UK. Hopefully in a few years i could get the money and go to your school but these FREE tuts are a godsend. I'm surprised you haven't actually put a price on these there that good.
@ StyleSessions Im pretty sure feng do this movies for the love, in arts and teaching/helping, he will not stop doin it for free. And yes thanks for all this help your providing Fend, paving new way for the future artists
yay! european sizes! ^^
good to know I was on the right track before I went to digital! nice tip for folding the front page over for the gum strip sketchbook, will try that sometime.
this is sooo helpfull, thx soo much feng.
I started to develop my first iOS 3D Shooter and I created all stuff directly in 3D, but its hard to keep the idea straight in my head....now I learn to draw that stuff, thx to you feng.....I want to make the courses in your school when my game is ready and I will have some money and I my drawing becomes better.....
best regards from germany
My first time seeing you without a cap and in fzd school😂
Excellent video! Feng Zhou always packs so much valuable information in these tutorials. Still learning how to make straight lines consistently, it is one of those skills that takes a lot of practice. I'd love to know what all the rest of those supplies Feng Zhou has on the table are- he only uses the Pigma Microns and Hi Tec Cs. I'm guessing there are some cool pens and markers in that pile. :-)
Dude! I knew that I saw your name in the starwars episode 3 concept art book that I have! :-D
"and you can draw straight lines, which are also very parallel..." that was funny. haha. Anyway, great vids. Great insight into commercial art. Picked up some really great tips on formal technique as well!
yeah spencer's sketch book is amazing
Excelent Video Thanks Feng, your explanation is very clear, thanks again for your recomendations
Saludos desde Costa Rica
Greeting from Costa Rica come any time !!!
Feng do you recommend a large sized desk for more drawing accuracy? I draw on an intuos5 which I adore very much, however my desk is pretty slim and I cannot do that elbow support trick for precise lines because pretty much its just my wrist and hand the ones resting on the desk!
the elbow tip is super interesting, I was wondering though, do you keep your fingers anchored too? Or do you move the fingers freely with the elbow?
This video helped so much ! I never though of the the elbow to draw with.. Great videos Thanks so much :)
Ur right, Feng. I need to stop being nervous about my sketches, I'm gonna start drawing anything and everything and just go with it! Freedom! Woohoo!
And not a MAC in sight I love it.
I started carrying around notebooks with the age of 14/15. Now I use a large A4 one i use to draw all my ideas inside. His points on sketchbooks are great.
what kind of traditional practice did you do with the pen? other than lining and circling
the next legend FZ! :D
Amazing advice, thanks Feng! :)
nice guys...gr8 institute....
"These pens are a little dry here, let me switch to another pen." LOL
Now I need to go to this school lol. So friggin' cool
Feng please do another video about the pens/traditional tips like this as you can see this video is very famous for us younger viewers who still draws on paper
sheen aro Yeah, that would be nice. I would like to know more about pens, pencils and papers.
You should look at Scott Robertson UA-cam channel for that.
@t0m31292 you can use your wacom to rotate the canvas in most applications
Sorry it's matthew39arch, one sketchbook I really like is spencer's sketchbook, his character designs and movement are mindblowing!
This is so helpful, many thanks :)
Was there a follow-up video on marker rendering techniques? I'm a big fan of Feng's old work, have lots of markers from when years ago I was inspired by his former work, and would like to use his older styles to start. I contacted his office and the old site's tutorials are not available. I'd be very happy to see traditional marker rendering discussed.
Hey Feng great work, keep it up!
Can u upload some of your "traditional" sketches from those little sketchbooks?
Thank you in advance.
Man.. Chinese people have awesome accents.. I just realized... Well thanks for this amazing video!!
thanks youtube algorithm to letting me see this 10 years old video
i think what you're looking for is just making a hotkey to rotate or flip your canvas so you can always be whichever way is more comfortable. rotating the tablet wouldn't do it since the picture on the screen would stay the same.
Where do you get those anatomy statues/tools? they look sweet.
Feng, please explain how do You use wacom tablet: do You rotate tablet everytime You draw straight lines or just move elbow around? I/We would be really appreciate seeing video with You, monitor and Your drawing gestures on tablet :)
his hand is so steady!
those " rough ideas" ARE FREAKING AMAZING.
LIKE. HOLY SHIT.
when your using the wacom tablet do you move the wacom around when your drawing a straight line or do you just go for it like say a line straight down just curious because ive started to use a wacom but its awkward because i used to move the paper around alot
That is an interesting idea, will definitely try that thanks :)
@jasoncummings2000 do you trash your reams of paper after or keep them?
My teacher has both of those anatomy cast models. They're VERY helpful :)
You're a great teacher!! :D
Hi, I got a general question on the drawing technique. I saw that you are locking your elbow on the table while drawing. I pretty much use my hole arm, sliding my elbow on the table while drawing. As im still a beginner i'd want to know if it is more advisable to use that "locked elbow" method to build on?
I would appreciate any kind of suggestions!
Which is better? resting you hand on the page(restricted movement but more control? or lifting your hand (freer movement but less control)
how does your elbow move up and down if you are pivoting left and right? does it drag or hover. for the lines it makes sense, left and right pivot on elbow, but for the elipses, it doesn't (at least to me) because you dont just go left and right, you go up and down too, and i dont understand what is happening there.
can you explain this?
Thanks!
Me having singaporean blood and wanting to draw, this helps alot.
Though then again, what about when its not on the table like on an easel? Is it the same thing? I tend to use my wrist alot cause my shoulder hurts if I use my elbow.
This one was really good. I think you could have tell more about what to practice on not only straight lines and olypsis. But very useful video at all! Thanks! / Finndahl
I have a question... what paper do you use when you work a long time ago with traditional mediums? gouache on bristol board, pens in sketchpad? i don't know what's really applicable...what i only know is that sketchpad is basically for sketches... but i wanna know about the other tools like the pens...where do you use 'em? thanks!
