Beyond A Steel Sky Review - The Final Verdict

- Almost 30 years have gone by since Beneath a Steel Sky; so much of the industry in general, and adventure games in particular, saw an evolution in that intervening period.
Beyond a Steel Sky could easily have gone wrong. It could have stubbornly stuck to the past. refusing to account for how things have changed in the almost three decades since the original game; it could have tried to chase down the modern take on adventure games in the guise of Telltale and Donned games, losing a lot of what made the original so beloved in the process.
Instead, it straddles a fine line between modernization and tradition, and delivers a well told story that, while decidedly beyond a must-play love letter for fans of the original, manages to deliver a compelling experience to newcomers along the way as well, in spite of some unfortunate stumbles.
Played the original one on an Amiga A500. Never thought this would follow some 27 years later.
Completly agree but it is so fun.... I put this on my iPad for my son he is so more engaged than a shoot em up game. We play it together and it's so bonding.
Good on you. I grew up on playing point and click adventures on the amiga. My dad helped me as I didn't speak English.
That’s awesome to hear.
It's okay. I played beneath a steel sky once. I prefer broken sword or monkey Island. I think this game is to hard for me
I feel like Bruce Campbell would've been the perfect voice actor for the lead.
Glad to see it coming to consoles. There's so much potential in this style of games. I hope they make more.
As I said in my comment I wish there were more similar games too, even though I am in my late 30s and too old for gaming really, games like Beyond a Steel Sky are the exception. It is like a good novel or movie, just a great adventure experience in an engaging world
@@shawntipton5078 you are the generation that grew up with gaming.. it’s ridiculous to feel you’re too old for it in your thirties.
I played all the point and click back then (Sierra and Lucas Arts), can't believe I never heard of "beneath"
Same!
I discovered it pretty late as well. Played it a couple of years ago because GOG gave it out for free in the beginning. It's a good game if you haven't played it yet, truly a classic of the 90s.
I am happy that Apple is putting better story-adventure games on Arcade, or, Appstore in general. I mean, I am Nintendo, Playstation1&2 generation, and our games had no connection, no multiplayer, but it was soooooo much more fun playing story, opening new levels, every level brings something new to reach, some mystery to solve, and it needed much brain work, as a kid - I would spend a whole afternoon on just one mission. Most of the games right now, arent made for our gen, like Fortnite types, MineCraft, where you have to play around with people, kill someone, and restart the same, nthg happens. So hope we will see just more and more games like this.
Even though it just came out. I hope it’s successful enough that it garners a sequel. I would love the series to be rebooted. I don’t want to lose Joey and Foster for another 27 years!
I loved this game so much. Had no idea what to expect going in to it and before I knew it it was 4 AM and I was finishing it in a straight, non-stop playthrough.
Reminded me a ton of Maniac Mansion for some reason.
I've only just begun playing this. Classic Revolution/Charles Cecil, excellent writing, characters, and spoken dialogue have drawn me in.
Yes!! The good old days of the Amiga computers. Good times
I think some "gamer's" intelligence is deteriorating as things go on.....
By this I mean, games like FIFA release, and people say "Oh it's so repetitive".
CoD releases.... the same people say "Oh it's so repetitive".... the same with Madden, NHL, BF.
I mean, I would be really shocked and pissed off if I purchased FIFA and all of a sudden it was a Sheep Simulator or Chicken Simulator.
People buy certain types of games, because they know what they want.
Now games like Beneath a Steel Sky, Broken Sword, Sherlock Holmes, Day Of The Tentacle.... people buy them because they're point and click adventures, talking too people, getting clues, solving puzzles in order to progress the story.
So I am baffled that do many other reviews of this game say things like it is slow, no action, repetitive?...... what are you expecting then? A Mario Kart/First Person Shooter? It is a puzzle solving, point and click style adventure!
Am I now so old that I find it weird the bloke has to describe what adventure games are for a new audience like they just dont understand these types of games, these were all we had in the early 90s and they were amazing, beneath a steel sky was legendary
If it’s not a battle royale modern gamers don’t know what it is. /s
Modern gamers will complain that it’s “walking simulator”
Back when adventure games were technical showcases like FPSs are now.
Stunning and engaging game and these style games are ones I feel you can't be too old for, games like this are adventure games with little violence, a great world design and story and interesting characters, just like a good family novel or movie and in my spare time I am replaying Beyond a Steel Sky. Great experience. I wish there were more like this one
This is one of the best games iOS, way better than 95% of the games available
Yes it is and in what spare time I have I am replaying it on pc
been waiting 30 years for the sequal, the story is great but the game mechanics feels a bit dated, there's a lot of scanning and hacking. pretty much that's all you do besides talking to characters. the original changed gaming the sequel is a good tribute. definitely worth playing if the original means as much to you as it does to me.
Omg! Just learned of this! I LOVED it on PC. It would be great if they include the original.
no one cares
@@giovannigiorgio2262 Oh yeah! I memba…
They Gave It 7 Out Of 10 😀
Bro spoilers!
Humm… I watching to see what the gameplays is. But I don’t take “rates” from reviewers as a indication of quality.
They have given 9/10 to cyberpunk 2077 Pc, even though it does run better than the consoles, the game was still plagued with bugs and had the same lifeless city, weak gameplay and poor story.
@@zanychelly that's your opinion 👍
That's a fact more than an opinion.
@@zanychelly Idkn I think 2077 was pretty great once all the kinks were steam rolled out
Beneath A Steel Sky came at the _tail end_ of the Adventure Game era.
So, you start your review by praising Beneath THE Steel Sky. Sorry, but that's all that I needed to hear.
This is such a great game. Thank you Revolution Software for another masterpiece!
I'll play when it hit Game Pass
lame pass

You're one of those guys whose voiceover is a little too powerful for mic, and your mic is probably a very expensive one. Try placing it a little further away!
It's the 30th and it's still not on the Xbox store or PlayStation store.
Listening to the band beneath the sky brought me here lol
I play this game on my Apple TV it’s free on Apple Arcade
It's like Altered Carbon (except heavy action)....just solving something in Neo-tokyo looking city.
Had the original on the Amiga 500 …… It was 15 discs
I’ve just bought this on PS5, mostly for nostalgia, also for the trophies.
I’m not 50+ either…… not for another 6 years.
Broken camera again? Dear developers, can you just put the bloody camefa IN THE BLOODY CENTER?
I prefer funny adventure games like monkey island or a game like broken sword. This looks like a hard game.
Remakes shouldnt be lumped in with remasters. Remaking a game is essentially making a game again with modern tools. So a remake of a game requires as much effort as making an entirely new game. Remasters on the other hand are generally cash grabs
This is neither a remake or a remaster it's a sequel
This is a sequel lol
@@QueeferSutherlands I think u just read the title and didnt watch the whole video. There is a part where the narrator lumps together remakes with remasters. Do you want me to time-stamp it for you?
@@brucew565 do you want me to care?
"Beneath the Steel Sky"... Say that you havn't even heard of the game with out saying it.
No one can review a game like rantoni
Somebody remake the original Deus Ex with a massive budget for PS5
no thanks they ll turn into a scripted 3rd person with emphasis in cutscenes
It’s strange to think how long it’s been since KOTOR, and how few games are able to pull off a compelling twist on story.
DX does need a better sequel, because of how dense JC Denton’s backstory can be, ie Illuminati, Aliens, Hong Kong, UN Special Forces, it got into that Cyber Noir / Ghost in the Shell territory easily. But, Cyberpunk Dystopia is difficult to balance out without retreading the same tropes.
Notably because of the Streaming trend, you can play a game vicariously through someone else’s experience, having a strong story element can be easily “spoiled” or neutered by having the story revealed and explained, before you can buy it.
@@Toliman. cause games nowadays only care to be WOKE
I hate it when game trys to make a joke and its not even funny
And i dont see it anywhere on the ps store 🤦♂️
Great review!

I like all the big words you use
0:32 Beneath *a* Steel Sky.
Fallout Down Under
Is this a open world game ?
It lost its atmosphere, the metal encased hopelessness, it's too bright and happy to be it's real successor
@d R I'm pretty sure I played it more than you have in fact I think I'm completely certain that I played it more than you have. And I guarantee you don't know the entire basis of his game was the aesthetic. Well you're entitled to your own opinion, in this case this is a completely different game set apart from the original what's 0 to no Source hopelessness Steel in cased environment which was May I remind you the Creator's original intent.
But, why now... Tho that game is solid.
Is this more of a Telltale "game" where it's a game in name only and pretends that your actions matter and is really just an interactive story or is it like an actual adventure game where you solve item puzzles to continue the story?
Not sure, but kings quest (2015) definitely is a good point and click puzzle solver if you haven't tried that one.
Road 96 is strange graphics mmm hmm
Usually it’s an adventure game if you have a dialog tree and an inventory of items that solve a puzzle.
Something like Detroit: Become Human, is borderline, because it’s quasi-linear and interactive. You can follow the same tree, but have different options based on following the puzzle/discovery or not being as fast with the responses.
The Telltale formula of games, before they went broke, was to illustrate a visual novel as if it were a directed film narrative.
I can see this comment is a year old but nobody actually answered your question, so I'd like to say (finished it last night) that it's a traditional adventure game, in my opinion. There are a couple of branching points for little things in the story and a handful of alternative routes for puzzles, but any choice elements are incidental. The core gameplay is solving puzzles. The split I'd say is about half between inventory/object puzzles and hacking puzzles (i.e., swapping around the functions of nearby devices).
Some people can be a bit funny about what is a 'real' adventure game, and I've seen fans say that, for example, Technobabylon by Wadjet Eye Games is a 'visual novel' instead of an 'adventure game' because it's too linear and they don't think the puzzles require much thought. I think the puzzles in Beyond a Steel Sky are harder than most Wadjet Eye games, so if you have played any of those (e.g, Blackwell, Gemini Rue, Primordia) and thought they were real adventure games then this one should definitely count.
I got it cuz it looks like tales from Borderlands witch I love
I'll stick to the original. This looks terrible.
Hi guys
It’s called Beneath A Steel Sky… not The :/
He’s talking about the sequel to beneath
@@TicTac27he called it beneath the steel sky, that’s not the name of it
It's one of the all time greats and it's "Beneath A Steel Sky", not "the"...
Reminds me of Rogue Galaxy. Any relation?
none whatsoever
Looks too slow and boring for me
it's a thinking game, it doesn't suit all people.
Target audience 50 year olds +

Nah. The target audience is anyone that likes games like this and then some.
But, herrr derrrr, old gamerz, amirite?!?!
As if there should be an age cutoff in the type of games people should play or like. 🤡
