i think the difference between doing it for the money and doing for the love of it shows through in the music itself. it also shows through in longevity.
I fell in love with Willie the first time I heard You Were Always On My Mind and have stayed with him through the years and through every genre. He is a national treasure. He did things his way and we’re all the better for it. We’re blessed to have him all these years. It will be a very sad day when he’s gone but , we will always have his music and the memories of “The Red Headed Stranger”, who entertained us as only he could.

I'm checking out this song because i just now read a post o Facebook about the writer of this song. Her name was Cindy Walker. She wrote songs not just for country stars for which there were many. She wrote 50 songs for Bob Wills. She wrote songs for Bing Crosby, Roy Orbison, Gene Autry, Hank Snow, Glen Campbell, Ray Charles and many more.
This song is right down Willie's alley, it could have been made for him! He's 87 now and still touring, what a legend he is, I guess I've been listening to Willie my whole life. Talent beyond imagination, he writes, plays, sings, any genre he can make his! My opening number, first set, was always "Night Life" and I sometimes closed on that number also. I didn't even realize Willie wrote it until someone told me long ago! Carry on, Willie, for a few more years! And thank you for your musical artistry that you've given us; we will always remember you!

The next time I saw Willie he was more talking the songs, looking beat up, not playing his guitar much but making it "big time" in the music world. I never got to see him after that but I still remember how well he wrote, played & sang his music back in the 50's & 60's. He is an accomplished song / soul writer for many other singers who have made it good on his songs. Willie's talent was evident from the beginng, even though it took awhile to be found.

I first met Willie Nelson performing around the Austin/San Antonio area in the early '50's. He was dressed in a dark business suit & tie & white socks. I thought he was really a good singer/musician then. A couple of years later he still wore the same suit but no a tie. Then several years later I saw him again and he was wearing dress pans, plaid shirt & a cowboy hat - his performance was even better.
Ditto, Shell Crocker. I miss Willie.. he's so down to earth an real a talent that will never be equaled to. A calming loving person.. his kids should be proud.
