    Getting 800 plus miles between fill-ups on my 2022 ecodiesel 4x4 (large 30+ gallon tank). Only 2K miles on it. Expect that to improve over time. 26+ mpg combined city / hwy. Had a 2018 2nd gen ecodiesel before this one with the 3.92 rear end. 3rd gen turbo lag much improved over 2nd gen and the 2022 has a 3.21 rear end that outperforms the the 3.92 2nd gen off the line. Hwy mileage with 3rd gen / 3.21 rear end is amazing at 70+ MPH, could never get over 27 MPG in the 2nd gen with the 3.92 rear end. 30+ MPG on level ground with the 3rd gen eco and 3.21 rear end. Not as fun as the Hemi off the line, but all else considered, very happy I went with another ecodiesel.

    It's currently $3200 on a Limited to add the EcoDiesel. Although the resale would likely be higher with the diesel, just going off fuel costs alone it'd take a while to recoup that cost.
    EcoDiesel: 21 City, 29 Highway, 24 Combined
    Hemi eTorque: 15 City, 21 Highway, 17 Combined
    100,000 miles driven each with average combined fuel burned:
    Diesel: 4167 gallons @ $4.50/gal = $18751
    Hemi: 5882 gallons @ $3.50/gal = $20587
    Difference: 1715 gallons, $1.00/gal (typical price difference), $1836
    This isn't factoring in the added cost of DEF either or variations in favor of either side that would offset the cost. Either way, even a High Mileage driver would take quite a while to recoup the cost. Each engine has it's pros and cons though and the EcoDiesel has it's place and need in the market.

    I literally just bought a 2022 RAM Limited with the HEMI a week ago. The Eco Diesel was available but did not make economic sense for me. My needs are very different than yours, but we came to the same conclusion. I only drive 10k to 12k per year so the added $3k to $4k up front for the Eco Diesel would never be realized. First off as a general rule of thumb a diesel will get about 20-30% better fuel economy over a gas-powered truck. This sounds great until you realize that diesel fuel is 15-25% more expensive than gasoline. Add the DEF and the added maintenance costs and you will never recoup that money. I guess if you towed a lot, it would theoretically be possible to recoup your initial investment. I think that RAM would have been smart to go with a small inline 6 diesel. It would be sort of a "Baby Cummins." It may not be a better motor, but I bet the take rate would be higher. Another big problem with diesels in general is the high cost of repairs on the emissions systems and fuel delivery systems. Many of these issues could probably be solved but diesel has gotten way too much negative publicity to be viable in non-commercial (non-HD) uses. So, for all of those reasons I chose a gasoline powered HEMI instead of the Eco Diesel. All of this is just my opinion, and I am sure that many folks will disagree.

    I have been driving diesels for almost 20 years and hated to go back to a gasser but the 2016 ecodiesel I had was in the shop more than it was out. Almost every problem it had revolved around emissions. I my opinion the EPA has ruined the diesel engine and its long time durability. All those pro's about the ecodiesel were true but it is not enough for me to go back to one until changes are made to all the emission BS. I know that is not going to happen so I am having to be content with a hemi. Don't get me wrong, the hemi does run and sound great but I do a lot of towing in the summer and the fuel milage is about half that of the ecodiesel and I was not smart enough to find out how big the gas tanks was. I assumed it was at least 26 gallon. Nope, 23 gallon. That gives me about a 180 mile range. Don't get me started on the genius that decided that was a good idea. Rant over. Be cool!

The 2500 cummins was out cause I drive a rough ass cdl truck all day. The eco was my next choice until I drove it. It can't get out of its own way when you need it to. Just to slow. So I went with the hemi for that extra power and for the ride quality. I decided if I'm paying 60k for a truck I want it to be comfortable to drive. I tow snowmobile trailers in the winter and dirtbikes in the summer. Yes I would love the 2500 for that but most of my driving is un loaded so comfort and the fun factor won out for me

    Let me start by saying I don’t think you’re wrong. But I do think the ecodiesel has gotten a really bad rep for what could(key word) be a fantastic engine. I am the current owner of a 2015 ecodiesel. My father in law has a 2020 hemi. With that said fuel mileage is hugely better in the ecodiesel. My average combined city and highway is better than his best highway mpg. I don’t think of half ton trucks a major tow vehicles no matter the engine. If you’re really going to be using a truck to tow a lot get an HD. That’s what they are made for. But as far as towing with mine the most I tow is my side by side. Even with full windshield on an open flatbed trailer I can get 15-16mpg at 75mph. Everyone brings up DEF. The ecodiesel uses so little def it’s a joke to think it makes any difference in a decision versus gas. A full def tank on the 1500 will last you 8500-10,000 miles. DEF never touches the engine so to me it carries no weight in the argument. If you want a 3 letter acronym to blame for ecodiesel engines it’s EPA. The emissions systems are the demise of the engine. The big fire hazard recall was for Egr coolers failing leaking coolant into the engine. They have had some other issues too but I will say this. My 2015 is my favorite truck I’ve ever driven. It has given me some grief with emissions components and coolant leaks but when everything is right it is fantastic. To be fair mine is completely deleted so that resolved most of the big issues with the truck. I just think of it this way if the world were a different place I would bet the ecodiesel would be a huge seller. Just my 2 cents.

      GM has been building trucks for decades and yet they couldn’t engineer another way to place the oil pump without removing the transmission.
      GM has been going downhill for a while now, they are having to many problems with engines destroying their pushrods, 8 speed trans issues and the fact that you need to remove the transmission for a oil pump replacement at 150k is just mediocrity for GM despite building trucks for decades and was once known as the best reliable pickup trucks back then.
      And no the engine won’t explode but it will put a hole on your wallet because at 150k miles you’re warranty would of have expired and now you have to pay out of pocket for around $1,000-$2,000 just for a oil pump replacement.

    Seems like HEMI is a good option for people that buy trucks for looks or to haul a bag of dog food. If you're going to really tow or haul i'd get the diesel, I severely regret my 5.7 decision, its a complete wimp on towing and hauling near capacity throw a hill or mountain in front of it and forget it. The HEMI struggles SO badly towing that you can just feel the truck doesn't like it and it almost feels like you are shortening the life of the engine by the mile. You had better get your wallet out if you're going to tow/haul with that gas engine. I also think the DEF issue is way overstated, you can even buy DEF at the pump at many truck stops now days.

  • @wesleyturner1979

    I struggled with this decision. I ended up with a gas one just because the diesel’s were non existent to buy used and were like 10k more. However, my gas one only gets like 16 mpg combined. However, the power of the Hemi is nuts! I’m constantly finding myself only slightly pushing down the pedal. I’ve only floored it once and it’s really got some serious push with my 34” tires!!!
    I would say that my inner man child sheafs some tears for not getting the diesel. However when I put my foot into the Hemi, he’s happy in a whole nother unexpected way!

    I agree that the HEMI offers a whole lot more if the fun factor in driving. Despite some people's bad experiences, it's a pretty rock solid engine. I just wish that it got better mileage. There should be an econo mode tune that we could simply switch over to for those times that we was to conserve fuel; and a beast mode tune that we could open it up on a track, or off-road. They could include it with the Tow/Haul mode switch.
    Similarly, I do like the new EcoDiesel! The version used in the gen5 RAM 1500 is a newer and better version than the one used in the gen4 trucks. It's a great engine, but it runs better on European spec Diesel. That's why some people are running into problems with the current model. They're pumping Diesel 2, because it's cheaper than Diesel 1. Most folks don't know the difference, but suffice to say that if you run Diesel 1 with the newer EcoDiesel, there will be fewer problems and repairs down the road.
    Some guys tune the EcoDiesel for sport; and it can surprise s lot if people, for what it can do. I wouldn't do it, because I'd be towing and hauling with it.
    I also agree with you on long distance driving. While I like the idea of having sn 800+ mike range on one tank, I need to stop randomly, even if just to get a coffee, of cold drink... as well as for the ole bio-break. I will sometimes pull a marathon run for the entire distance of my tank's range, though. Usually when it's an overnight run.

    The decision for me was easy. There are no diesel stations between me and my job. Diesel was never an option

      Whereabouts are you from where diesel isn't an option? It isn't as common in my home town, but there are a few stations that carry it.

      @@MrJustinWheeler Mexico, lol. We had a big change on fuel laws a few years ago, so all the gas stations changed brand and we now have a similar system to the US, where each gas station has its own gas prices. That unfortunately means that getting diesel is harder now, since not all gas stations carry it anymore. In my case, I would have to drive an extra 10 minutes past my job to the nearest gas station that has diesel.

    I have a 2021 GMC denali with the 3.0 I-6 Duramax turbo diesel and I'm getting 35-37 mpg highway, and 27-29 mpg city. Has just over 6500 miles on it. This destroys the eco-diesel.

    • @PlayWaves1
      @PlayWaves1 2 роки тому +1

      I don't believe those numbers. But you're right the 3L Duramax is a better engine, largely because the EcoDiesel suffers from a serious throttle input delay when you push the gas at low speeds..

    Ohh that smell from the def makes me nauseous but with gas prices nowadays 1.60 a litre in Canada I wish I went with an EcoDiesel 😞 we are getting the shaft from our governments with these gas prices

      @@MrJustinWheeler diesel is more expensive around 10 cents more where I live but with the extra mileage it's better than gas 1200km a tank with the EcoDiesel 500km with my Hemi 😂

    • @JHuffPhoto
      @JHuffPhoto 2 роки тому +1

      Where I live diesel is anywhere from 15% to 30% more expensive than gasoline. However, if I travel away from the city then the gap becomes a bit smaller. Add the initial higher cost at purchase, higher maintenance costs, prices for emission/fuel system failure repairs and math just did not make sense. I would have to really want a diesel for it to make sense. I mean I can afford the higher costs, but I choose not to.

    I love how I can drive just over 600 miles on a single tank of gas when I'm doing primarily highway driving. 2019 Limited, 5.7 Hemi eTorque with 3.92 gears highway driving gets me about 20.5mpg. My 2016 5.7 Hemi got about 1mpg better with the 3.21s.

    The 2014 eco-Diesels were taken off the market due to emissions, not FIRES! I have two Grandsons that have them, one a 2014,the other a 2015. My wife also had a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Eco-Diesel, which she just sold.

      This is incorrect. There is an active “risk of fire” recall as well.
