In this jazz guitar lesson I'll teach you 5 jazz guitar licks over the II V I progression / jazz cadence in major.
I'll show you all II V I scales needed and the pattern assignment. I made one jazz guitar lick for each position, so by the end of this tutorial you'll be able to find your way around the neck and have bebop licks that cover the entire fretboard.
The II V I jazz cadence is the most used progression in jazz and jazz related styles like latin and funk. It is vital that you have blocks that you know by heart, so you avoid thinking during playing.
I made a II V I licks guitar PDF, that you can order from the link above.Along with the II V I backing tracks you can start practicing right away. No more excuses ;-)
I'll give you detailed background (theory) information on all the lines. I show each of the ii v i guitar licks note for note. There is a fast and a slow playthrough for each of the bebop licks.
There is almost no jazz standard that doesn't have a jazz cadence in major in it. You won't survive long in the jazz world without knowing some ii v i jazz guitar licks in each pattern. This lesson will help you. I'll take you by the hand and guide you slow and easy!
The ii v i backing track i made is a slower one and a mid-uptempo one. The better you get the faster you should be able to play these jazz licks. Jazz can be pretty fast at times, so prepare yourself. But start slowly. Try to understand the scales used for ii v i progressions and what you do, in order to be able to memorize the bebop lines.
If you like this guitar tutorial on ii v i guitar licks, please leave a nice comment and don't forget to like the lesson video. If you want to, subscribe to my channel. I have tons of good jazz guitar lessons up here on YT. It's worth the click ;-)

You should have 100K followers. One of the best jazz guitar instructors on UA-cam.
Thank you ❤️. I wish I had 100k 😊. But we're getting there.
We made it happen! Now 104K :)
One of the best lessons I’ve found. By far the best line...”what do we pay bass players for?”
😁
"What do we pay bass players for, anyway?" Best bebop teacher on UA-cam - hands down. Thanks for teaching this old dog new tricks!
Hehe, thanks, my friend and jeep swingin 🎶 🎸
The most difficult thing for me to do is to tear myself away from your very comprehensive, very engaging, very instructive very patiently thought out lessons with your very sweet personality.
I have learnt ssssssoooo much from you that all other tuitions pale into insignificance.
You were made for this!
The world of jazz guitarist would be sadly poorer without you and your in depth, insightful instruction.
I know you love the instrment and what you do for the world of jazz guitar players. 😃🎸
Oh my, so many wonderful compliments! Thank you so much, my friend! ❤️
Keep swingin 🎶 🎸
You should give for free some courses for the Argentinian people haha!
Sandra, I've been a weekend singer guitar player for 50 years. I always learned songs from chord charts and records without really understanding what I play. I enjoy learning and just copying your jazz runs and licks because they are so beautiful and tasteful and fun. I'm afraid i will never be able to understand how to apply them because of my lack of formal training but i have a blast with your lessons. You are an amazing player and great teacher, I love you!
Everyone learns differently. Maybe you're more of a "listen and play" person.
Maybe be the best teacher on UA-cam. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Aaawww, that's so kind of you ❤️❤️❤️
Comprehensible lessons for guitar players who are starting on jazz.
You are doing something great that will remain for the next generations.
Gongrats on your excellent work!
Wowzers! Thank you for that wonderful compliment ❤️
U are great. I hope many people learn from you.
Thank you! I hope so too 😊
Best teacher on youtube!
Aaawww, what a wonderful compliment! Thank you so much ❤️
This has to be one of the best channels for newbie Jazz guitarists. Thanks, Sandra!
Thanks, Mike! ❤️ I try to keep things simple. Jazz is complicated enough 😊
This is freaking AWESOME!!! Thank you ma'am!
You're sweet
Hi Sandra, ... lunch was good😉. These licks are great, but they also serve as starting points for great exploration! The diminished launching point off the 5 chord tones has many possibilities! Be-bop-in’ along👍. Be well!
Mahlzeit, Barry! 😊 Thanks Barry! What 5 chord tones do you mean? You can start a dim arpeggio from the four chord tones 3, 5, b7, b9 of the dom 7 chord.
Guitarversum Sandra Sherman Yep! That’s what I was meaning (the “5 chord” - dom and it’s diminished launch tones that you mentioned). I love those possibilities, sometimes even 3 or 4 notes out of the dim line can give it a flavor. What one can do in Autumn Leaves comes to mind😄. Great lesson - so much more in there than just the licks. Thanks Sandra!
Fantastic teacher! Thanks Sandra you are the best.
Thanks, Roger 🧡
Great Great lesson. Thanks
These licks lessons are so useful. I keep returning to them!
Hey, that's cool. Should I do more?
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman Definitely! Do you have one for -7b5 to v79(alt)?
I should have looked first! I found it. But anything incorporating and explaining enclosures and transitions to the next chord in progressions is helpful to me.
Grossartig! Danke für die Skalendiagramme im Video.
Excellent tutorial! thx
Thanks, Sandra! Another great lesson!
So fun to play these licks and use their structure to come up with my own. Thank you Sandra!
Always best to make your own. Throw Radler to memorize that easy. Just copy the creation mechanism.
You give a great overview over the fretboard! I already have alittle repertoire, but one can't have enough of these licks.
Try to practice them in different keys! That's how to get the most from these licks.
Very useful, well elaborated and with good taste licks for many occasions. You did it again, Sandra. Thank you again for your great work.
Thank your for your wonderful compliments! Blushing a bit more ☺️
How can anyone give thumbs down ? Thanks my lovely for sharing another wonderful ❤️ lesson.
Thank you, Michael, for your heart warming words ❤️❤️❤️
looks easy to play when you're playing, thx for this lesson
Thank you Sandra, you are the best tutor I've come across on the Tube and I'm really enjoying your bebop guitar licks lesson. Still trying to get around the finger placements but I'll keep going and see how I go. Cheers✌😊
They may seem unusual, if you come from another style. But the more you practice you'll see it's always the same finger movements. There are a couple of those and you'll have to get them into your muscle memory.
Great! Its Very useful! Thanks!
I love the theory behind these lessons. That being said if you could tab out your lines and put them up it would be a million times easier to follow. Really hard trying to follow where your hands are going.
Thanks, Tyler! I'm happy you like my lessons. The tabs are really cheap (usually $1.99). It takes 2.5 days and 2 people to make a single video. Please understand that I need to make a little money 😊.
terrific. Really enjoyed learning them and why its called be bop.i can see and hear myself improving everyday.Thank you.
Awesome! It makes me really happy to be a part in your jazz journey!
Formidable lección, esta semana te has superado a ti misma aún más si cabe, las clases de licks, escalas, improvisación etc, siempre son mis favoritas. Excelente Sandra, muchas gracias.!!
You're very welcome, Salvador! I hope this lesson helps improve your playing.
I just found your tutorials. You are an awesome teacher!
Thank you, Emmanuel! Glad you let me be a piece on your jazz journey.
That's the best video on 251 I've watched so far. Genius!
Wowzers! Thanks so much, James!
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman I found your approach straight forward - thank you. Great lesson(s).
Just discovered you.
What a treat
Love your chord melody arrangements
Not too daunting
Which is just right for me
Plus find your technical analysis very informative and interesting
Thanks so much for uploading
Ted
Hi Ted, thanks for your kind and encouraging words! Keep swingin, my friend!
This is SO Hot ! Beautiful II V I Bebop Lines you are so thoroughly & patiently teaching us. And in a 2nd Language even (English). Fantastic Job ! TYVM

dear Sandra, your Lessons are so helpful and very interesting!!!
Thank you so MUCH for your hard job!!!!!!!
Thank you, Kaya, for your kind words! ❤️ ❤️❤️
Thanks Sandra, as usual we will spend a nice week studying these licks!
Ha, have a great week 😊
Good work, found to be very refreshing thanks Sandra.
Glad you dig it! ❤️
Thank you for responding, appreciate it realising you must be very busy - not at all easy to do what you’re doing teaching jazz by good videos. I’m from a blues-rock-etc background, and enjoy the outside note combinations from your jazz tuition (hoping to incorporate such in my fusion playing). Kind regards, all the best with your endeavours.
So great and detailed!! Thank you!!
Glad you like it! ❤️
I am not familiar with jazz.... But your teaching turns me to jazz guitar beginner ❤️❤️ Thank you🙂
Make sure to check out the chords videos first (go to my playlist)! Chords are key to everything, including soloing.
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman Thank you.. I will check🙂
You're the best, thank you Sandra, greetings from Mexico. 👏👏👏👏

Great stuff
Thank You sooooo much! Any others would also be greatly appreciated.
What "others" do you mean?
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman Oh, I'm sorry, I meant any similar lessons to this one as it's been exceptionally helpful to my studies to navigate thru the V alt in a very melodic, Bebop musical manner!
10 Point`s Sandra as always 😃
Thank you, Pertti, my loyal friend!
Nice Sandra and Thanks for Your sharing! Johnnie
Great as usual
Thank you ❤️
Love You're Work Sandra🙋
Thank you, Mark! Very much appreciated ❤️
This is a clear and concise lesson so far, well described and easy to understand.
Glad it was helpful 😊
Love the lesson! Love you Sandra! Thank you!❤
Thank you, Steve, for your kind words!
New to jazz and love the well presented lesson. Well explained and diagrams are invaluable. Any tips on moving forward. Lesson ideas etc.
Depends on what you already know. I recommend my rotorua on 7th Chords, Tension Chords, Comping and all the Dorian lessons I have up.
This lesson fixed some of my frustration with learning the art of jazz soloing. The changes in key have been throwing me for a bit of a loop. I've been in study now for about 6 months, and the chords have come rather easily, but soloing over them with my teacher has been tough. Thanks from Nashville.
Glad to hear my hear was of help. Keep swinging 🎶🎸

Thank you Sandra, excellent lesson. Please can you consider making a Chord Melody lesson sometime please ,beginners level :)
I have just finished one and it will be up soon. You will know it, by the words "beginner friendly" 😊
Great, clear, understandable and interesting lessons for a beginner jazz player. I come from a rock background.
Welcome to the jazz ride! Glad you find my tutorials useful.

Superb lesson thanks very much
Glad to see you enjoying the jazz ride on my channel :-). II V I is super important.
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman Loving it. It's really difficult but you're lessons are great. The standards are great tunes. Love to see you play a gig.
great lesson again, I'll just try these licks and send you a message how it works with MY sticky fingers. ;-)
Ha, sure lemme know :-)
You're looking well these days. :)
Thanks ☺️. I lost 13kg.
Yay ;!
The D minor lick is the same as the line inside Donna Lee
Yes, I steal Licks from great artists 😉
Error on the tabs? Hi Sandra, I recently discovered your site and love your lessons. I believe there is a tab error on lick #3. The first two notes of the second bar are the 13th fret of 1st and 3rd strings but the tab shows them as 11th fret?
Thank you! I'll look into that.
Hi Mrs! can you do a lessons on basic chord progressions
Could you specify that?
Dear Sandra greetings from Argentina. You have an awesome channel! Do you encourage to practice this licks in upbeat nº 1 always or mix up in an anticipation mood, as the bebop usually does?
I'm not sure what you mean by "anticipation mood".
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman to not start the phrase on the first beat of the IIm7 but on the last beats of the previous bar.
Anticipation is a great tool. But you have to add extra notes before best one. You cannot just simply move a purse, that starts on beat 1 to beat 4+.
The rule is: If the lines starts on a beat, you can move it to any other beat. If it starts on an off-beat, hot can move it to any other off-beat.
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman Thanks for the info!!!! So I can start the lines in the 3rd or 4th upbeat from the previous chord to the IIm7 (I assume not in the 2nd nor 1st because in this case the line will be SO out-of-tone)
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman "Out-of-tone" I mean: The risk of start your lines at the 1st or 2nd upbeat of the previous bar. I think the 3rd or 4th upbeat of the previous bar will work better. We will have a "moderated" anticipation, isn´t?
hi, if i use a grace note to approach a chord tone, will the grace note be counted as a strong beat and the approached chord tone will be counted as the off beat?
A grace note is always on the same count as the actual now. Otherwise it wouldn't be a grace note, but two seperate notes. A grace note is a very quick, like a 32nd or even 64th, note either slightly before the count or on the count. That's just a matter of taste for the timing.
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman thank you so much for elaborating, more power!
So helpful! Learning these as well as a couple of licks from your charlie parker video. Thanks!
Great, your growing your Lick library 👍😊. Now try to apply it to every song you play!
I want you to come to Japan live.
Me too 😊
did she say the c is the "avoid" note in D dorian? In the blues you can play dorian over the I chord and use the 6 instead of the b7. but I have never heard of the phrase "avoid note".
No, c is not the avoid note in D-dorian. That would be "b", the 6th. An avoid note is a note that clashes against an important chord tone, like the 3rd and the 6th, because it's just a half tone away. The note b in D dorian is a half note away from the b7th of the Dm7. So you better not land on that tone.
@@GuitarversumSandraShermanthanks for the reply. I’m 2 months late with my thanks, but that is because you have so many other great lessons that I got distracted by. I agree with all the other comments: you are such a great player and teacher! Love the variety of your content.
Hi Sandra, I'm new to your channel and I have to say, great presentation of great content and a very re watchable video. Thank you.

it s not D dorian but Frigian mode
What? You mean phrygian? Phrygian is the 3rd mode, not the 2nd. But thanks for mansplaining it to me. 🙈
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman Sure Dorian is 2th and Phrygian is 3th mode but The schema you show on the screen is E Phrygian , starting from A string 7th fret 7 , 8 , 10 at D string 7, 9, 10 and G string 7, 9, 10
Am I wrong ?
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman by the way ..no intention to mansplaning..sorry
Who needs the root, why do we pay bass player for? Hahahah
