Here's a question for IGN, why did you downplay the technical issues and give the game a 9 instead of calling them out?

Because reviews are permanent and while performance can be fixed in weeks, the review will stay at a low score. Plus IGN and all other reviews were given a pre release build and all were told/assumed that issues would be patched in launch
@ewokpilot6521 thats the philosophy of filthy apologists. the score should reflect the release date. if they wanna re-review once a year for 3 years with time stanps, they can do that as well
@@SobeCrunkMonster It's been years since games are not perfect at launch. At some point it's up to you to decide if you want to purchase the game at launch or wait 2-3 months until most problems are fixed.

The biggest problem on PS5 is the CONSTANT STUTTERING in performance mode, you can even see this in this video. No camera movement without stutters, it extremely hurts the immersion. The most concerning thing is that EA apologized to PC users, but ignored everyone asking for better performance on consoles.
Screen tearing is also a constant problem on the PS5 performance mode - first game I’ve seen to screen tear on the PS5. I’ve switched to quality mode instead.
Reminder, PS5 performance mode turns off when the cutscene activates & turns back on when it ends and gameplay resumes.
Maybe that's where the stuttering is coming from.

IGN … right hand doesn’t know what the left is doing. It’s academic as mostly what the other hand is doing is complete and utter drivel. It shocks me how an organisation with so many resources can produce such consistently low quality output. This piece stands out in a sea of their 1, 2, & 3 out of 10 content.
@@Phyrrax Even if they did not want to lower the review score, they should have put up a disclaimer like they did for Hogwarts Legacy. They made such a big deal about JK Rowling when she wasn't even included in the game development but they absolutely fail to put disclaimers for the actual thing that matters. But yes, it is my fault for trusting IGN reviews and pre ordering the game, should've known better.

Hopefully they have updated modes on console that disable raytracing so we can get a better leap in quality for performance
Turned off raytracing on pc. Gained about 2 fps. A lot of games use ray tracing for ambient occlusion and reflections which doesn't bother the fps much compared to shadows that are being rendered on every blade of grass like Witcher 3.
@@2salty580 It doesn't matter what GFX card you use. Digital Foundry posted a video using the RTX 4090 and the difference in performance with RT on vs off is minimal. The game is just severely unoptimized.
problem is it is overloading the cpu and not sending tasks to the gpu. Basically ignores the gpu. Programmed by experience engineers....

This game is so optimized on PC that changing the resolution from 720p to 4k has no impact on fps. They have managed to do magic 🗿

You guys (and others reviews too) really need to make separate scores for performance, story, mechanics and so on, these should be rated separated and from there you could give a total score based on those
Yes. This should be the way. Every game should have a gameplay+story review and then have a technical review as a footnote. Games can be great but terrible technically and vice versa.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad IGN are producing this content. But I’m disappointed that it’s coming out after launch and when most of the sales have been made and reviews have been watched. It was misleading of IGN to leave all of this valuable information out of their day one review. We all know why it wasn’t there too, they wouldn’t have been able to give it a 9.
It's only one day after though? How many sales besides preorders could they have possibly made? If you preorder a game in 2023 you deserve it tbh.

whats the problem with 9? The game is fantastic. It lags? A lot of games may lag at start, it will be gone in a week or so, you can wait until that time if your pc is lagging. Mine is working great. Technical mark should be a different from overall, it should be updated on a daily basis and not included in overall mark.
It warranted a video on its own man. If you couldn’t wait one day for a performance review to decide which platform to get it on, that’s your choice.
The IGN review was tested using RTX 6090, with 32gb of VRAM, that is why they scored it 9 before the launch

Why didn't IGN do more to call out the horrible performance issues in your full review of the game? You rated it a 9, but it constantly crashes, has audio and other issues, and seems to have VRAM issues (running on a 3090).
Edit: HDR also seems to be broken.

HDR is indeed broken on console. Playstation is really messed up, Xbox is a little messed up.
And surprisingly HDR is fine on PC.

Honestly if you turn on motion blur while in quality mode, it makes it a lot easier to get used to. Rarely get motion sickness since it’s not as fast as 60 but it really smooths out the 30fps it kinda makes it seem like I’m playing in 40fps. Enjoying quality mode so far especially on my 4K tv :)

Yooo you know what would be great, if you would have mentioned all these performance issues in your review when you gave the game a 9 out of 10.
This game did not deserve a 9/10. Maybe when these performance issues are solved they could have receive that score, but the reviewer failed to take them into consideration and many players, myself included, feel that IGN has failed them.

It seems for now quality mode is the way to go
The game runs really smooth on Quality mode on the Series X. I tried Performance mode and there was a lot of stuttering which you'd usually see on Quality mode. In short, it's backwards. Also, repspawning and loading a saved game seems to delay texture loading, causing everything to look low res. It took leaving an area and coming back to it just to fix the issue.
I've found the same, quality definitely seems to be the way to go
30 FPS will never be smooth, especially not on OLED TVs. OLEDs are terrible at low framerates.

@@MarkusFFFF The type of TV (OLED, LED, QLED, etc.) does not make frame rate look better or worse. 30 fps just feels very choppy compared to 60+.

OLEDs have an extremely fast - nearly instant - pixel response time, while every other TV technology is very slow compared to it - they are introducing a kind if artificial motion blur because they are so slow and as a result they are smoothening 30 FPS a little bit. OLEDs show the raw 30 FPS, which is very stuttery compared to every other type of TV. It's a common known problem with OLEDs. But you are right of course: 30 FPS is always stuttering, 60 FPS should be standard in this new generation.

playing on a strix 3080 with a 10 series CPU. There is absolutely no difference in performance playing 4k with epic settings and Ray Tracing on from playing 1080p low settings with Ray Tracing off. Both get a pretty regular 40fps and constant stuttering.

I'm 20hrs in playing on my Series X, and man, this game pays like an absolute dog. They should be ashamed that they released it in such a state. This is an unfinished technical nightmare that no consumer should expect from a AAA studio. Companies should be fined by consumer laws for releasing unfinished games like this. It's a shame cos I'm loving the story and game itself.

I've been playing it on series s and the resolution and textures get to PS2 levels in certain parts lol.
Man, the 30fps mode (PS5) is definitely the way to go for now. This is one of those games that really takes a hit when dropping resolution. It looks real rough. The 60fps mode has tons of tearing and dips on top of that.
Performance mode been fine for me on Series X.

They could give us a 1440p/40fps 2.1 hdmi mode for now. Might be waiting weeks for performance mode to be fixed. Don’t know how their QA dept thought this was ok for release. Performance mode “targets 60fps” but is constantly in the 40s 🤦🏻♂️

Yes.... and when you turn VRR on it stutters like hell.. putting the game on quality mode and disabling 50hz and 20hz in the series x settings will let the game do a stable 30 in quality mode but in performance dont even bother with it..

If you play with a variable refresh rate tv, performance mode is very playable. If not, play on quality mode because performance mode is terrible.

I’m playing this game on a ps5 in performance mode. My frames are constantly dropping. In an open area, I’m easily playing on 20 frames. Hopefully they fix this

What happens when you put the PC version at 1080p?
Absolutely nothing. The game still has shader stuttering caused by extremely poor shader compilation and will still be CPU-bottlenecked most of the time due to extremely poor CPU multi-core optimization.
They should account for general game performance in game reviews.

Quality Mode breaks down badly on Koboh. Go fight some enemies near a river or stream and the frame rate drops into the teens.
That’s when it takes the worst hit for me on SX. It’s horrendous

Digital foundry
As other analyses have concluded, it's badly optimized code that is making it CPU bound (versus RT overhead, or higher resolution). Yes, you can up the res to "force" more GPU utilization, but it's a false fix because the real culprit is bad code that is slowing down the CPU, and therefore also slowing down the GPU since it's waiting for data from the CPU.
Sounds like another example of “keep your money in your pocket until they iron out the kinks”

Really shoudlve talked about the performance in the actual review of the game not after its apparent the game is badly optimised
FSR2 causing shimmering on all assets and objects in the game even in quality mode. Also anything that moves gets super pixelated. This happens on both PC and the consoles no matter what settings are used. On PC disabling the FSR 2.0 breaks anti-aliasing completely making the game just blurry blob
You should integrate performance in the overall score. How can this be a 9 out 10 if it runs this bad.

Because they want to put out bare mid tier hardware at lower costs to charge $70 for games. To them and most customers, 30 fps is passable and for those that it's not, have performance mode. Personally, I'd be happy to spend a couple hundred more to have hardware that can run 60 fps in quality mode.

How VRR works on Xbox series X? Elden Ring have poor optimization, but on Xbox Series S/X with VRR works great.
Is there any advantage for series x Over ps5 if both are playing quality mode at a locked 30fps, because series x can be set to 120hz from a system level? And does series x need a vrr patch? Thought that was only for ps5 as series x has vrr at a system level?
if the game runs at 30fps and you put your console at 120hz the game is still 30fps...
