- Checking out the new Access Point WiFi 6 Extender for UniFi Network. This device plugs into a standard electrical outlet and auto-magically extends wireless coverage by meshing with existing UniFi access points. How does the WiFi 6 Extender compare to the previous generation BeaconHD?

So no one going to say anything about how the top box just took off 😂
In case anyone was wondering, It was Aliens. Its always Aliens
Been running one for a couple of weeks. Works great. I have it in my front entryway of my home to provide a better signal to my Unifi Doorbell.
The box floating away was just perfect. Well done!
I literally just bought one of these and used it over the weekend. Short story, works as intended!
already missed the fancy packaging removals :) my favorite is still the one where you are throwing the package from your table outside into the woods :D but this one here is also nice just flying up^^
I, too, am able to confirm RGB functionality. It renders whatever is selected, although what you see on the color selector in the UniFi Network app doesn’t necessarily match what you actually observe when the Extender is plugged into the wall. Obviously, the hue you see emanating from the device largely depends on the paint color of the walls adjacent to the wall outlet.
great - I use alot of them in a condo complex to provide Wifi in this building ... works great.
The floating lid was very funny!
Hey Chris....thanks for the video. Have you done any speed tests in the particular area that you installed the extender vs what you're supposed to get from your ISP? Just curious on results? Thanks.
I just got one of these (thanks to UINotify!), and mine has RGB lighting! The product description says blue and white lights only, but the settings menu gave me a color picker and I can confirm the AP does display more colors. 1:30 I use one of these and a WiFi 6 In Wall, and the InWall gets very hot as well.
Mine also has RGB lighting. Just set it to green.
Just received mine as well. The product is completely black, and when adopted, it opens worm holes, and has near infinite gravity. Well done Ubiquiti, tapping in to the CERN collider!
I have had almost the opposite experience described in the video. I have my U6 Pro on the 3rd floor and the Extender on the Main floor. Most devices in my house automatically connect to the U6 Pro. I got the Extender for anything that might be too far away, such as wireless cameras in the garage area, water detection sensors, and smoke detectors that utilize the 2.4 GHz range. The Unifi app says the meshing is excellent, so I have it in the right spot now, as I originally had it in the basement. Unifi says my wifi experience averages 98%, and almost all device connections are excellent. With all that, my cameras constantly drop the connection. I've purposely set the cameras to connect through the extender but haven't seen any improvement. Seems like I've tried everything and the only other thing I can do is maybe install another wired AP in the basement. I love how CloudKey manages everything but my wifi is nowhere near as good as I had the original AP LR over 6 years ago which was dying a slow death and needed to be replaced. I thought with new standards and new hardware my network would improve but really hasn't.
what was that cable you were using to power them up side by side? thats looks like what i need to run these out on a patio/deck for temp uses.
Great video very educational. In your opinion what will deliver better performance, a wireless extender/ repeater like you demonstrated or a router re-configured to act as an extender? The re-configured router would be hard wired to main router. I recently re-configured an old Linksis router to act as an extender connected to my Spectrum router. Thank you.
hahahahahahaha, that box taking off just had my in giggles, nobody unboxes like Chris hahaha
Hi there, this works like any other wifi extender right? Meaning that we have to create a separate SSID from the existing SSID available?
Thanks for the review :) does it have SSH?
That's warm.
Can you please share what is the name of the power extension cord you are using and where I can get one from? Thanks
do it work on 220v power with us power adapter, or only support 110v?
Have you done a video on the AI WI-FI nightly configuration?
Curious to see if it's worth using or not
I have the following setup:
For indoor wireless, I have AmpliFi Mesh and it works great.
For outdoors I installed a Cloud Key Gen2 and on it I have a UAP-FlexHD and a U6-Extender in my shed. The thing is that when I go far in the backyard, the wireless doesn't automatically connect. I have to turn off the wireless at least twice on my phone or reconnect using my laptop.
Does anyone know why it doesn't get connected automatically from one AP to the other?
Thank you.
It would be nice to get some radio frequency readings and more applied review content about how the actual performance of the device is
I keep coming to reviews on this channel looking for this info but don’t get this
I got the same note about the LED color, but my LED does change color. You should try it… I’ve done yellow, red, white, green, and blue in various hues.
Can a regular Unifi access point such as the AirCube AC be configured as a range extender? What about converting wifi into Ethernet to pickup internet from iPhone hotspot and give it to the rest of the network?
Apologies if this has been asked before but I was wondering if Unifi hardware is managed locally or is it all cloud based?
any updates on how hot this and the other Wifi 6 boxes get, in general? Thanks!
what product should i use with my problem ?
i got some wired ipcams separate from my house and i am not able to run a ethernet wire to them, i allready got a ac ap pro and would like to "extend" to an device that i can connect my ipcams to the LAN. any suggestions ?
general question, i have ubiquiti setup, but when i do speedtest on WiFi via mobile (iOS) i never get more than 80-100mbps down, but my main connection is 800mbps down and 200mbps up. why is that i can never get more download speed on wifi?
Can You connect it to a wifi 5 ap ?
Thanks for the video ! One question as I struggle to get that info : if the need is to extend wifi behind the U6 extender and not in front of it… How performant will it be ?
I have a beaconHD and it appears that with the recent update to network app, I've lost the ability to change the LED color.
I can't get it to show up in the control panel to be adopted. I have a UDM in place already and I'm trying to add this to the network. It just doesn't show up. I have enable mesh and enable early adopt on and still isn't showing up. Thoughts?
can I deploy this on a home network without a Ubiquity controller? I purchased two of these and neither one shows up in my unifi network app. I deploy AP pros all the time with no trouble but I can't get these things to pop up as new device found. Also, they are both very hot after only being powered up for a minute...........not sure I am comfortable placing these in my customers homes!
any advice?
Does it half network speed
Is it possible to specify what frequency band or channel the Wifi 6 Extender will use for its own uplink? Or does it autoselect, depending on network congestion, which frequency/channel has more bandwidth available.
What did you do for plugging these in for the video? I would like to use mine with a power strip and not cover an entire outlet.
Also, they REALLY should have given these a PoE handoff/passthrough for activities.
I have the exact same question.
My Extender will not be found, either by bluetooth, or by trying the Unifi app. I'm at a loss to get it connected to my Unifi 6 access point! Help!
You should really consider switching to the new interface in the settings.
The legacy UI is feature-frozen (and thus will never show the correct icon for the AP). It has long been present in the new UI.
Multiple new features in UniFi Network (like lock to AP) will also not show up, there's no port selection for the USW-Enterprise-8-PoE and other stuff. The new interface is really recommended -- especially for product reviews
Story is the box never came back down... Like prince's guitar when he played George harisons induction to the rock and roll hall of fame 😂
1:15 fancy pants take off the box lid
Any recommendations on how far away this should be from my WAP?
Just inside the range of where I lose signal? Closer/further?
I am trying to connect my solar panel envoy to my network. The envoy is about 100ft away and down a hill a little. The current wifi network is visible a few feet from the envoy on my cellphone but cannot connect when right next to the envoy. I tried adding a long range AP to my network, but it didn’t make a difference. I have two AP Lites in my house up the hill. I was trying to decide if buying a U6 extender or U6 mesh would help? I don’t know when one is better than the other? Basically, what’s my best option for getting wifi down to the shop if I can’t run ethernet to it.
If I understand these videos correct, the extender should be fine if I can get a connection down at the shop. I have a weak signal next to a few outlets in my shop with my iPhone. Is the extender likely to be able to connect?
I’m currently running a dream router-U6 pro and a U6 extender
U6pro is connected to the dream router by cable. And u6 extender gets its uplink from the u6 pro. On my workspace on the attic I’m not having a to stable connection. Would you recon putting a extra u6 extender on my attic would help? Or will it massively bring down the throughput?
Are these weather proof? Looking to extend the wireless coverage outdoors to my backyard...
These are not - you'd be better off going with something like the U6-Mesh access point, which is an outdoor unit.
are there covers for this one like the beacon?
Not that I'm aware of - but it's the same physical size. I'd bet that the old skins work fine - though I have not verified that personally.
Thanks for the video. Can it be set for both private AND guest wifi network ?
It picks up the settings of the access point to which is it meshed. If you have a private and guest wifi network on the primary AP, then you will have them both on the extender.
@@billbroderick2923 Thanks
what was that unboxxing????? I'm dying 🤣
Thanks as always. Can you show us how to upgrade from cloud key V1 to the Dream Router?
Hi Chris, would have been nice to have a comparation of the mesh link speed / quality and real speed on wifi 6 and 5 clients.... I just plugged one at home to try and the mesh link with an U6-LR gives me the theorical TCP speed above 1 Gb! Much higher than any other mesh link ever seen by me....
What signal % are you getting between the two?
@@antok86 78 or 79%, it's at around 10 meters from an U6-LR with one brick wall in between
I have had two and I wish I had never bought them. The only things reliable about them are that they will jump into isolation mode at any point, heat up a room like a full server, and last but not least, brick themselves. This is the first UI gear that I wished I had never even seen.
Wouldn't have WiFi 6E made more sense? That way they could have used the 6Ghz for backhaul?
Why you using the old Legacy Interface?
It's on my own Digital Ocean hosted UniFi server which uses the older interface.
To be clear, this requires at least one Ethernet plugged Access Point, correct? It meshes off of that main AP.
At least one, correct
Hi. I purchased a u6-extender device but I am unable to access it. where can I find the password to connect to the device... what is written on the back under the name is too short, it has 6 characters and I need 8... I don't know what to do anymore. I looked through all the options
Interesting product. But it seems dated. 😔
6E would be future proof. 👍🏻
compare mesh 6 and this extender 6 heat temps
they are pretty much identical. the u6 mesh is also so hot
No CH Swiss Power Adapter ;)
Ubiquiti doesn't care about Switzerland. All of their devices come with a Euro style plug and digitec packages an extra CH cable. What a waste to have to throw a way a cable with every AP you buy
Fast immer 1,5qmm. 16A mit 1,5 qmm ist Deutschland die häufigste Installation. Man findet aber auch viel 10A/1,5qmm und 13A/1,5qmm. Also Steckdose wechseln. Überhaupt kein Problem.
I really don't understand why they design this device in such a way. I already know that there will never be a version for my countries socket (Switzerland)
Your misuse of the term uplink is confusing
Mine runs extremely hot to the point I stopped using it.
Mine got much cooler with latest beta firmware
@@ffp3 good to know I’ll try putting the beta on it tonight. Thanks!
I can‘t confirm this. the internal temperature sensors show the same values as with the old firmware
@@thomasrudolph7331 same with mine after putting beta FW on it. The highest mine read was 142F. It's currently unplugged sitting in a box.
Wireless mesh for the loss 👎
Sounds like a fire hazard and must use a ton of power if running that hot. Hard to believe such a garbage upgrade to the old product would be released by UniFi.
