      In fairness, it was also $109 on their website as well. The $89 price point goes a lot further to support this being a 'low cost' solution.

      I did a double take on the website today because I was sure it had been $109 or something, not $89. I wonder how it will compare to the AC Mesh Pro for range with the omni antenna they release.

      A great alternative to the U6 mesh access point for sure. We run U6 mesh access points, because they were out of AC mesh ones when one of ours went down. It would be wise to keep a couple of these in the shop in case one of those fails I think.

      Exactly. Lacks 2.4GHz and WiFi6, yet called "ultra" for $109??? Nah. Someone needed to get rid of some 5GHz chips... I can't see a use case for this where the UAP Mesh doesn't also cover. And to add insult, the antennae can't even be purchased, with a "coming soon" note on the store website. Um....no.

    According to their specs, it only supports WPA/WPA2. WPA3 has been required by the WiFi Alliance certification since 2020, so either the spec is wrong or they're using a truly ancient chipset for 2024 if they can't support WPA3.

And I’ve had a great experience with the Cloud Gateway Ultra. It’s a router, cloud controller, and has RJ-45 ports. Sure the RJ-45 ports are only one gigabit but this cloud controller supports 30 UniFi devices. With the vast majority of devices in my house using Wi-Fi, it made perfect sense to go with the Cloud Gateway Ultra, Flex Mini Switch, and U7 Pro access point. Great video!

    For some use cases even wifi 5 is overkill. I live in a rural area in Brazil and don't need the gigabit internet all over my property, just something for someone that's out and needs to call (no cell phone signal here) and one very remote camera (bridged with a pair of nano station 5 because the terrain is too bad to bury a fiber cable).
    I'm doing fine with an air grid M2 HP for a linear section of the property, a nano loco M2 near the gate and a rocket M2 with two big ass 90° antennas for the main outdoor area.

    I don't see low-cost alone as a good product strategy. Maybe they had a huge bid and developed this for a large corporate or ISP deployment, charged NRE, and decided to throw it into the regular line-up to get incremental sales?
    I would like to see them do products with different features or capabilities, rather than just price. A plug-and-play PTP Wi-Fi bridge in the low-cost range would be much more valuable. Something to bridge a backyard, detached garage, pool or other home-based application where a wire can't be used. Not competing with the higher-end dedicated pole-mount bridges in UniFi's other product lines or WISP products.
    With the venerable AP-AC-Pro getting old, there isn't another choice for UniFi AP with two Ethernet ports - one for PoE power injector and a second for local bridging of multiple client devices.

    I sure wish they would come out with a mount that would screw to the electical blue box or mud ring that we install during rough-in. We nail it in place, pass the cat thru the box, loosely stapling about a 12" tail on one side and pull it out when we are trimming out. Based on their installation images I guess we are supposed to have a cat hanging out of the ceiling or wall and hope the sheetrockers don't destroy it or cover it up. This all looks like old work installation. How about thinking about the large number of homes getting prewired during the construction phase. I've only seen one of their access point mounts with enough holes in the right place to mount to a blue box or mud ring. These engineers/designers need to get out of the office once in a while.

    I really like the form factor. I think UBNT have done really well designing it to be so flexible and I get that by making it Wi-Fi 5 only they can keep the price down. However if I buy one of these I'm going to want to keep it 2 to 3 years minimum, so making it Wi-Fi 5 only hurts the longevity of the product. To be honest you're better off to just buy a U6-Mesh which is almost as flexible except for the external antenna's. Sorry but UBNT got this wrong.

    I guess the directional antenna option wouldn't work well as most of us might think because the clients still have the same antenna for transmitting back and on most cases our directional antenna won't be able to help on that case. Maybe would work well for a point-tto-point setup though where both sides have good directional antennas, but that's not the product for that I believe.

    • @tomaskolinger
      @tomaskolinger 5 місяців тому +2

      Antennas work in both directions, more narrow beam angle doesn't only mean stronger transmit in given direction but also greater sensitivity in given direction. Thus superior antenna will benefit clients with lesser antennas, they can't shout lauder but more directional (= higher gain) antenna can hear them better. I'm not sure why would you want directionality tho since WiFi clients often move about and that doesn't go very well with directionality, it would work better in one direction but much worse in others so don't see the point for client devices. Perhaps some very wide directional antenna would make sense but classic directional antennas are fairly sharp angle so that doesn't make sense on short distances.

    Yay they brought out a new product shame half of the existing products have been out of stock on the EU and UK website for months . How can you you recommend a company where you won't be able to buy spares when things break due to supply issues X just have no network for months or throw the entire ecosystem away as you can't continue with the one you have .

    I got all excited and then I saw it's WiFi 5 only :( WiFi 6 was the BIGGEST upgrade in all WiFi history, and I really, really don't understand why anyone is still producing anything but WiFi 6.
    I really hope there will be a "UK-Ultra 6/plus" model with WiFi 6 available soon.

    This could be useful... if it had a WiFi6 chipset...

    • @SeattleSandro
      @SeattleSandro 5 місяців тому

      I don't think it being WiFi5 diminishes its usefulness. There are a lot of situations where WiFi5 is a perfectly good fit. If you're setting up an AP (or multiple) in a location where there aren't many WiFi6 devices, then WiFi5 is a perfectly good choice. This also means that your POE switch can be less powerful, since this thing barely uses power. This will most likely be in small deployments. Larger deployments will definitely want more robust APs.

    • @cmoullasnet
      @cmoullasnet 5 місяців тому

      @@SeattleSandro Sure it’s fine now, but the marginal cost of a WiFi6 chipset can’t be that much at this point. I seriously question the value of deploying anything on WiFi5 now because it’s reaching the end of its lifecycle.

    Unifi's software - though still have improvements - are slow/late in terms of daily requirements. The software architecture should also be revisited because some updates are terrible. They really need to step up as some chinese brand has very similar software features and architecture (controller for SDN with cloud capabillity). easily said: the cost efficient TP-Link.
    And I once had to embark my customer to TP-Link because of stock unavailability.
    EnGenius also targeting hotels/hospitals in SEA market. Now, we see RuiJie with the ReeYe models are agressive. Not only RuiJie may give Unifi a run for its money but the Enterprise range is or should be scary to the Ubiquiti line up (even on the carrier market).

    I was gonna comment pissed that I just bought 7 used AC Lites off eBay. But looking at the price of this, $110, no thanks. It sounded like it was going to be half that cost. Why are they even listing a lot of the older AC stuff? They haven't been in stock in like a year or more.

  • @honestgoat
    @honestgoat 4 місяці тому

    To be honest, if cost is a priority, Ubuiquity is NOT the brand you would go for, like at all. I think TP-Link probably has that market pretty well covered. You could get a TP-Link alternative to this "swiss army AP" for less than half the price. I do like Ubiquity stuff, its pretty, has a great line up and has a robust ecosystem; At least when they don't decide that they don't want to support some older hardware anymore.
    But you are ALWAYS paying a premium for the Ubiquity name. This thing is still USD$90 for a simple outdoor Wifi 5 PoE AP. That is way overpriced if "low cost" is part of the selling point.

    This product really does not make sense when the AC-Mesh exists, having better range, in a smaller package, with practically the same power draw....for $10 more. Ubiquiti initially launched it at a higher price than the Mesh at $109 as well.
