- This 30-Cal long-range bomber packs a punch and does so very effectively at distance. PRC stands for Precision Rifle Cartridge - and it lives up to its name. Optimized for heavy, high BC bullets, and featuring a big case for plenty of powder, this beauty has the gas to get it done.

The 300 prc is going to be my next long range target shooting rifle. Im hearing nothing but praises for this round.
Been shooting it for a year now. If you find ammo that your barrel will like you will absolutely love it!
@@jonathanmiller3613 hornady seems to be the popular choice.
I was always a 300 win mag guy until the 300 PRC came out. Bigger bullets , better BC, more velocity with less kick.
How is it less kick with more velocity and bigger bullets
ya gotta wonder@@concreteandgrading
Literally everything you said contradicts itself. It does not have less kick. Bigger bullets moving faster always results in more recoil. Got it you have a break on it and you don’t understand simple physics.
Only way this makes sense is a Gun factor...
If your 300 WM is a 8 lb rifle and your 300 PRC is 18 lbs, then you're right
I am a .300 Win Mag guy and really, shot placement is the equalizer. Unless target shooting, 750-1000 yd shots on game animals are in the unethical range, much easier to be off a few inches and wound an animal instead of a clean kill. To each their own, the .300 PRC has its place with folks too.
We do need a dedicated. 300 Win Mag video, gentlemen.
I love the 300 Win mag but once I started reloading I switched to the PRC and haven’t looked back. Not having to deal with the belt is huge. Also the throat design of the PRC is really intelligently done. I’m told you can get the accuracy of a handloaded cartridge out of a factory round.
and yes please do the 300 win mag episode!!!
300 prc definitely is a modern cartridge, no reason to purchases any other large 30 caliber cartridge. Love your podcast keep asking good questions👍
Unless ur hunting the big 5 in africa
I think I will wait to see if it catches on and becomes more available. The 6.8 western and 6.8 PRC are great rounds that just aren't readily available.
Ultimately I would like a larher rifle rifle for hunting big game in the future, and ensure I can reach out that distance. But I would go through rounds at various to distances to ensure I'd be prepared for any reach
I love this podcast!

Because a ton of Fudd lore for the most part.
These guys personalities makes them fun to watch laid back and genuine unlike most other youtubers and Ryan is probably the most knowledgeable guy about guns and bullets on the entire internet .....caliber talks are my favorite please do 12 guage caliber talk
You guys definitely need to do a video on the 300 win mag.
We will add it to the list! Thanks for tuning in!
@@VortexNation I second the 300WM vid and if you can fit it in 10 mins there are some custom chambered 300WM out there in the wild (long throat) that can drive 215 Berger hybrids @2969fps & 230 Berger hybrids @2860. Not factory available ammo but that's 300PRC performance right there. Had to go CIP as the AOL of the cartridge is longer than the standard 300WM mag length.
Mucipedia's knowledge is profound.. I'll never get bored of these cartridge 10 minute talks, ever.
He is a true wizard.
Haha my first rifle was a 308 as a kid. Years of shooting it I laughed at the idea of going to any caliber for lighter recoil. I ended up getting a 6.5 creed and fell in love then after probably a year of neglecting my 308 I finally took her out and was shocked by the recoil! I had got so used to that creed that I forgot what 308 felt like
“Recoil sensitive since shoot a PRS Match.” You guys are hilarious to watch. I love the cartridge talks you all do.
The 300prc was best described from 3:00-3:30. The way that I describe my 300prc is it's a 300wm with all the chamber slop removed and a much longer neck to hold onto the long high BC bullets and not set them deep in the case. I'd say that the 300prc is 20% better than a 300wm today. When more factory ammo choices come to market I'd say that the 300prc would be 40% better than the 300wm. Thats not saying that the 300wm is a slouch or obsolete in any way. I love my model 70 in 300wm but my 300prc is more betterer 👍😉
More bettererer.
@@joshlower1 you know what I mean lol
Kind of mucho better, like todays Corvette against a 2002 Mustang GT. When all else fails, rather then be embarrassed re-barrel with a 7-mag and have a 7-300. While the 300PRC slings weights you will be shooting laser beams 😂.
@@revolutionmarine5693 a "7-mag" or 7mm Remington magnum and 7-300prc are 2 totally different animals. So I don't understand what you are trying to say.
Do you have an optic with a dial elevation turret? If so....the "lazer beams" of my youth are trumped by heavy high BC bullets.....unless you are shooting 400yds and closer. Set a 180gr or 197gr 7mm bullet in a 7mag and half the weight of those bullets will be sitting below the neck shoulder junction eating up case capacity. Same can be said for the 300wm vs 300prc comparison. The PRC cartridges hold long high BC bullets in the neck of the case.
20% is a stretch...
But if you like it more, you like it more. But comparing the 2, the 300 wm can still do everything the 300 prc can. I load 225 ELDs in my 300 wm and my velocities are faster than my 300 prc with like for like loadings. I've not reached pressure signs with either, but they have different barrels and the PRC barrel is a 27 vs a 26 in WM so there are variances that factor enough to not compare them side by side in my case. If getting into one for the first time, having neither, I'd choose which has ammo available, and is cheaper to shoot. They're that similar.
Some chambers can make the 300 wm a challenge with heavyweight bullets, and most will be single fed unless it came with CIP mag length from the factory, but it can be done.
The 300 win mag with a 1 in 8 twist barrel has been the Goldilocks for me: shoot 230 A-Tips at 2915fps or shoots $25 a box Remington Core-lokts in a pinch. Of course for non-hand loaders, the 300 PRC is a great option! That said,I don’t know many ELR shooters who don’t hand load hah
out of curiosity, what's the barrel length/rifle that you have it in to push it that hard?
@@skyofstorms 26in barrel Browning Xbolt, Peterson brass, N570, GM215M
How heavy of bullet would you recommend I can go, for a 300 win mag 26” 1:10 twist?
@@jayklarquist7912 Hornady says the 230gr a-tip can be run in a 1:10, also the 225gr ELDM. You'd want to test those and make sure they aren't keyholing at your elevation. That said, the 208 ELDM will definitely work in a 1:10 and that's probably where I would start if I were you!
@@adambaesler5801 thank you.
The one thing that was forgotten in this talk is the twist rate from that factory. Faster twist spec vs other 30 cals is what makes it work better for the heavies. Also work noting, Lapua makes brass for this beast and the military is using the PRC to some extent.
A year and a half ago, Matt at CRS Firearms was doing specific builds. For example, he built and load tested a .243 for AP rounds. He had already talked about hunting rifles. His favorite to hunt with is his SCAR heavy, which is, of course, 7.62X51 mm NATO. Compact, easy to use, and certainly fine for the dense forests of the public hunting land that he now uses in Wisconsin (the c stands for Coloma.)
So, he wanted to build a sniper rifle, something that could possibly be used by military. He had choices from .308 W and up. Originally, he had chosen .300 WM because it has already been used, very effective, ammo everywhere, nearly as ubiquitous as .308 W. He could not find the action he wanted. But he was able to get a .300 PRC action. So, he built a .300 PRC with a carbon fiber wrapped barrel.
He had accuracy and performance problems that were frustrating and I think he eventually worked them out. First two shots would be great. Third shot would wander way off, like the scope moved or something else like that. Problems you normally only have with, say, a Mossberg Patriot in the factory synthetic stock. I can say that because I have 3 Mossberg pieces and one of them is a Patriot that performs so much better in the MDT chassis I put it in. And at the end of the day, would he hunt with it? No, and not just because it is purpose built for something different and he is not a long range hunter. It is so much recoil and it is a heavy rifle. Ironically, his SCAR heavy is lighter. I am sure everyone here knows the heavy description just means it is .308 W and not .223 Rem.
It could be used for longer range and bigger game hunting. And if I felt the need to hunt with something more powerful than my lovely .308 rifles, I would likely go with a .300 WSM, like Mark and not because he uses it, although he is the one to give me exposure and insight into it. (Sorry for the run-on sentence.) It is, to me, a fat .308 W. A medium action rifle that is less influenced by the wind and a short enough rifle to be truly portable. I also see it in action at Rogee Productions, where they hunt in public land in New Zealand and there is no getting within 100 yards of the skiddish ungulates there. Most shots are a few hundred yards. It reminds me of the state drawn lottery hunts in my state where you can hunt mule deer. The description of the hunt and the area is to expect snow and ice (high desert) and shots of at least 200 yards (high desert, not a lot of trees.) Pretty much all still hunting.
Would I change to .300 PRC for a 200 yard hunt? No. The factory load that I have has energy good to about 500 yards. That is plenty good, especially for the dense forests I hunt.
But intellectually, it is a worthy pursuit.
1.) A bit more velocity than the .300 Win mag 2.) no "belt" for consistent headspace 3.)longer neck can handle long/heavy-for-caliber bullets 4.) Developed jointly by the US Army and Hornady for sniping. 5.) More efficient shoulder angle.
I forgot to mention Barrett Firearms New DoD Contracts Include MRADs in 300 PRC and Hornady to Supply 300 PRC Ammo to U.S. Department of Defense (they designated the 300PRC as their sniper rifle a few years ago) FWIW
Yes!! I love these cartridges talks!
Love this round, shoots great out of my HMR wilderness
I jumped in cheap with the under $700 Howa 1500 chambered in this potent projectile. The Hogue stock is already something I've grown accustomed to but I'll be trashing the cheap scope that came in the package and opt for better glass. I've yet to send anything downrange, but I've got nothing but high hopes jumping from a .308 Win platform.
I have a Tundra 300 PRC made by Proof Research and love it!
Right on!
I wish there were more options for factory hunting loads, hand loading is great but if your flying somewhere and your ammo is lost 300PRC is not a “gas station cartridge” yet, for hunting I would still prefer 300WM just for how easy it is to find, for all other things 300PRC is better hands down in my opinion
If you're concerned about ammo availability, 308, 30-06, 7RM are the only ones I would consider.
And .270 for that matter.
@@connivingcactus539 oh yeah 270 has about 61 places you can buy ammo from online, and I'm guessing they're mostly hunting loads.... Does anybody shoot 270 for matches?
Do you do a lot of loosing of ammo?
I like the term “gas station cartridge”. It’s a better name for what I’ve referred to as the Walmart ammo test.
When I‘ve gone into a small store in the middle of nowhere in Idaho or Wyoming, the available ammo tends to be 22-250, 243, 270, 7mm RM, 308, 30-06 and 300 WM. Some would have 30-30 and 338 WM.
Great cartridge, but I am still in love with the 300wsm. Happy new year 🎉 ✨ looking forward to more talks
I'm with you the WSM is a great choice
I found a lot of 300 PRC on the shelves recently. Glad to start seeing ammo on the shelves.
I stopped by the Vortex showroom last week while in the area visiting family and picked up the same hat that Ryan is wearing. I actually saw Ryan talking to a customer and felt like I saw a celebrity! Lol
Please do a ten minute talk on the 300 Savage, the original 300

I smell a .300 WM video cookin... Finally! 🥰
Thanks for reviewing this guys
The one guy who knows everything. Should probably run the channel.
Im drawn more to this cartridge more and more it had surprising performance
I appreciated you guys making a 338 win mag video. That was great. Would you guys consider talking about what your caliber of choice would be for a specific type of game species or a specific type of hunt? Something in the lines of what caliber/cartridge you guys would use, what kind of ammo etc. I think it would be an awesome video. For me I like the 223 for varmints predators 270 for medium to potentially large game and the 338 win mag to cover anything that plans to eat me here in North America. No need for big 5 African hunting for me.
The 6.8 Western is the updated .270 WSM at first I laughed at it until I did some digging, the 6.8 Western is hitting harder then the 6.5 PRC at 500 yards by 17% and the 6.5 Creedmore by 34%
Thank you for your input on this cartridge. I have been debating it for a while now.
Thanks for tuning in, David!
Keep these coming!
You got it ;)
Love these podcasts, always a great time listening to all three of you. I was looking into getting a 30 cal magnum and was wondering what Mr. Ryan thinks of how the 300 PRC stands up to the 30 Nosler, especially the 212 ELD-X vs the 210 ABLR. And how they both would handle recoil while suppressed. Used to take elk up to 800 yards. Thank you.
I second this question
Third this question
I’m planning to buy one, especially after this video it’s helped solidify my search for another big thirty.
Would love to see this revisited!
I'm glad you did the 300prc love that design...
please do the 10.3x68 as well
I have a 300 PRC and 6.5 PRC in Fierce CT Edge's. Dream to reload and a dream to shoot. Got rid of my 300 WM and 7mm Weatherby. Never going back to belted mags.
Ryan's comment sums it up for me. "At present, there aren't any bullet offerings in the cartridge that I like". I agree. The ELD-X may be nice for long range specific applications, but is not a good performer at closer ranger higher velocity impacts, perhaps such as a bull moose at 75 yards, or a bull elk close in the timber. I don't deliberately choose long range shots. I like to be prepared for any opportunity within reason. Nosler Accubonds or Partitions generally perform well out to 600 yards, with adequate velocity to expand while having integrity for any close range shot as well. Much the same as Ryan states as his preferred limit of 600 yards for hunting, I feel I can cover anything from the muzzle to 600 better with other cartridge and bullet options. If the ELD-X could handle high impacts better, maybe that could change things, but a lot of hunters are reporting penetration issues with the ELD-X up close.
Would love to see a 10 minute in the new 7mm PRC
Poop, hype job, expensive ammo. Funny Hornady makes the 6.5 PRC and Winchester comes out with the 6.8 Western which is the best short action with magnum numbers at 500 yards and the 6.8 Western is hitting harder at 500 yards by 17% then the 6.5 PRC. The numbers aren't much more then others they are trying to replace. My .300 wm shooting out of the Christensen MPR 26 inch barrel at 1:10 no fancy BS is beating the numbers of the .300 PRC except foot pounds with their heavir rounds but dude im not out hunting elephants

These cartridges (300/7 PRC) are more for the long range game, 1000yrds+.
Wold love more cartridges like 6.5ss or any Sherman short stuff. Some real cool convos to be had
Love the 300PRC saving up for a savage elite in 300PRC… the Bagara HMR wilderness also comes in a 300 PRC
Those sound good. As long as u dont get a Browning. We call Browning rifles fence posts here.
Bought one in a Howa. It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite rifles. Surprised me as it was far less expensive than my other options.
I love this cartridge. I have a Howa 1500 light weight and those thing is a nail driver. I can load from 150 grain to 250 grain lots of options. Time and getting over this ammo shortage I believe lots of new options for loads. Reloads great.
What contour is the barrel on your howa
@@weekendfarmer9375 I have the cheapest howa with the green Hogue stock. I believe it is a pencil barrel with 1/2 x28 threads. Came with a muzzle brake. It is not full auto so the thin barrel does fine. I may replace the stock but right now it works.
Okay I just got a hs precision and have yet to sight it in but the barrel is the same.. laughably thin for sure
@@weekendfarmer9375 that is a good stock.
Do a talk on the 7.92x33 Kurz. I think it would lead to a great discussion on the development of intermediate cartridges.
The 300wm deserves a conversation for sure
I enjoy using and completely trust my Parker Hale #1200 - 300 Win Mag. Where I live, a 500 yard shot is extremely rare to maximum due to thick forest. The long shots are usually taken in forest cut-over areas. And at 60 years old, I cannot see myself cashing out for the latest product. I can also get ammo almost anywhere for the 300WM. I would enjoy trying the 300PRC though.
The good part about the 300 win mag is you can use a standerd action, a 300 wm with a 1-10 twist shoots a 208 grn, great, if you lengthen the throught you can shoot the same 250s a prc shoots , and in 35 years of reloading i have never had a problem with any of the belted magnums ( 264 or the 7mm or the 338 or my 375 h&h ackley )
Would love a weatherby run down on what they do and which cartridges stand out above the others, the 6.5 rpm and 6.5 300 weatherby, maybe it’s full podcast there’s a lot to talk about! You guys are great though.. very much enjoy learning from you guys
We appreciate you tuning in and for the suggestion, Keith! 👊
¡Best Title Ever! Love the 300PRC with 225gr.
Beautiful cartridge, new bullets, new powders make magnum cartridges, for hunting obsolete. Running staball behind a 212 in my 3006 at 2553 fps with a single digit SD and it shoots lights out, holding energy to take elk at any “ethical” range. My 300wm project sits in the safe, just don’t have a hunting need for it. Now a 300prc in a ruger precision would be a fun 1 mile gun.
So we call this the P-R-C, but the 6mm ARC is called an "ark". I think this needs to be called the 300 "prick"!🧐
oh man - haha
Perk?
Check out the 22 Grendel...it is amazing, even beats the ARC
@@VortexNation I'm not from Texas, but we need to develop a method of naming these cartridges. If this is P-R-C in every instance, then WSM should be W-S-M...not Wissum. 😛

I wouldn't be surprised if your peak chamber pressure is in excess of 74,000 psi.
Another missile strike is the 338 RUM, would love a ten minute talk on that or any of the RUM cartridges.
I love the 300 PRC..I shot it all yer in ELR.I did quite well for me being I was new to ELR..Not newto 1000 yards and 1200 yards though.I stsrted shooting the Hornady 225 ELD-Match but eventually went to Hornady 250gr A-Tip.It was going 2810 fps .It has a better BC thatn the 225gr. Thge 250gr A-Tip is a much better long range bullet.
I recently rechambered my 300PRC rifle to 30 Sherman Magnum which is a much better round shooting the Hornady 250gr A-Tip. Its running about 150 FPS faster than my 30PRC was with same bullet. And if I get in a jam I can still shoot 300 PRC ammo in my 30 Sherman Magnum.
277 wolverine! Love that 300 PRC.
The 30 Sherman mag is a better cartridge than the 300 prc. Eliminate a 300rum if u want a more efficient round that eliminates more recoil. Saves more barrels and 300rum Performance. Plus u can shoot 300 prc in a 30 Sherman mag and fire form your cases.
Please do a talk on 10mm for taking in to the woods for protection!

Yes wish they would do a video on that as well.
Yet ANOTHER great podcast from Jim, Mark and the Muckapedia. What are the chances we get Ryan to talk about the 222 Remington along with the endearing, but dead, Triple Deuce Magnum?
You'd be better off going to Gunblue's channel. He loves the 222
If You’re a new shooter, whether it’s hunting or ringing steel, 300. PRC is freaking awesome. If you’re an older shooter and you already have a 300WM, there’s not a lot of sense in getting a new rifle and a new cartridge, unless you have money to burn. Just my opinion.
The 300PRC can also be thought of as smaller/faster as well. the 6mm and 6.5 offerings are smaller and faster for say 1000 yards but when you start talking 1mile or 2000 yards, this is the smaller/faster compared to say the 50BMG and 338 calibers and would have significantly cheaper and more comfortable to shoot.
In all honesty I'm not a fan of the 7.62mm/30cal family but if I was to buy anything in it, it would be the 300PRC... It really is a cool cartridge. I have a 6.5PRC and if they necked that up to a 7mm I'd buy that in a heartbeat. Great video as always keepem coming guys!!!

@@steffen707- They do kind of already make it it's just not called the PRC... Personally I love the 6.5mm family but I also love the 7mm family. I own 3 of the 7mm's and for the most part a 300 PRC necked down to 7mm wouldn't be much different if at all as a 28 Nosler If I'm hunting a big animal that's what I'm shooting. I've already shot 3 moose in Alaska with the 28 Nosler and an elk in Colorado it was like lightning hit them so it's definitely worth checking out if you do any hunting for stuff like that.
Now do the 7mm Remington Magnum!
Love mine, Howa 1500 300 PRC. With 212 gr. This is a track driver. BUT you will need to get a good muzzle break to tame the recoil.
Just flipped a black bear on its back with the same set up.
More facts -
300PRC is built off the 375 Ruger case, No belt, less magazine/feed/headspace issues
Designed to seat heavy-for-caliber long bullets outside the case leaving more powder capacity than 300WM.
Optimal case size for powder charges, keeping consistent powder column. 308 Norma case too large - inconsistent powder column stacking in uphill or downhill shooting scenarios.
Enough ft/lbs at 1000yds to kill.
Hornady was marketing it hard, keeping lots of brass out there...
I studied and chose 300PRC. Very pleased with my Bergara HMR.
I can’t get off the RUM. I’ve used it for so long. It does everything I need it to do, and more!
I've always wanted one, hard to give up my 300 wm, I have it shooting 200 lrx around 3100 fps, I know with a rum I could get around 3350
I vote for all the popular magnums. 7mm Rem. Mag, 300 Win. Mag, and 300/375 H&H Mag..... I've got 3 outa those 4 in my family yet I don't feel like I know enough about them.

Guess there will be 3 new rifles for me now. 6 arc, 300prc and 6.5prc.
I got a Bergara terrain wilderness in 6.5PRC about 6 months ago, love it. It’s a great cartridge with a great mix of energy on target, low recoil and cost (if you load your own) I haven’t taken mine over 200yds yet but this coming spring and summer I’ll be shooting out to 5-600.
A 300 norma, a known person in the LR community has been expirmenting with an 18" barrel with amazing results.
Love to hear more on velocity from that length barrel
For people who shoot factory ammo, the prc absolutely makes the win mag obsolete. If looking at just hornady ammo.. a 7mm rem mag 162 grain eld x does better than a 300 win mag 200 grain eld x. So if you want to get better than a 7mm rem mag you have to scoot past a 300 win mag and go to a prc 212 grain eld x. So why would you want to shoot a 300 win mag with more recoil if your not getting more performance. I'd rather shoot a 7mm. But I ordered a 300 prc because I wanted more energy out at distance. If I'm going to have more recoil I might as well have the performance to go with it. That being said, to hand loaders, you can get similar results with a 300 win mag. But that is the beauty of the prc. It was made to give factory guys match ammo in a match chamber. Can't wait till mine gets here. Good talk fellas.
Slightly longer reincarnation of the 300 Newton. I'm definitely interested
I would like to hear you guys compare this to the 300 Norma mag.
Any experience with starting loads and a lighter bullet So the cartridge could double as a whitetailed load Without the liability of a muscle break ?
The eldx shoots extremely well from my 7mm-08. However I ran a box through a chrono and they had an extreme spread of 211fps. Also I hit a pronghorn at 50yds and hit the front shoulder and the bullet flew apart without fatal penetration. Round 2 at 225 behind the shoulder and it was great. I will probably go back to accubonds.
Yeah I wouldnt consider anything hornady makes as a good hunting bullet with the exception of the vmax for varmints. Their eldx is almost identical to their match bullets which are too soft for game and come apart easily especially at faster velocities. Much better off with the offerings from nosler, swift, and federal.
Shoots great out of my Christensen Arms MPR.
How's the recoil with that light gun? Are you able to stay in the scope to spot trace and can you shoot it all day without getting beat up?
Ya. Took it out one afternoon and shot two boxes of ammo. I haven’t shot it without the brake though. I’m guessing it’s an entire different beast with it off. That CA brake is great. Shoulder wasn’t real sore. I was expecting worse that’s for sure
I’d love to see you guys do one on the .460 S&W magnum
I would really like to see a 10 minute cartridge talk on the 416 ruger
Perfect long range round for people who don't reload. If you reload and have a longer chamber stick with your win mag or Weatherby.
Would love to hear what Ryan has to say about the 212 lrx for the 300. It's a "bore rider" bullet and idk what that means. But the B.C. is high and it's a tough looking game bullet
Merry Christmas Jim!
Merry Christmas to you, too! :)
For a second I thought we were finally getting a 300 savage talk.
.300 PRC will dominate the new shooter category for its class. Go to Cabela's and you won't look hard to find a .300PRC but look for a .300WM or similar and they will be much harder to find. Tika, Browning, Savage, and Christian Arms all have it. If you are looking for a first time gun in that class of chamberings this is the way go to. If you are not new you don't NEED to buy it, but you may want to!
Bergara also has it, together with the 6.5 prc..
I feel this is a modern day 30-06 truly a ulr cartridge
Curious on your thoughts on the 300PRC vs the 28 Nosler for a dedicated high county elk gun. Burning out barrels aside, do you prefer the speed of the 28N to the couple extra grains in the PRC? What about the 30Nosler va the 300 PRC? No competition shooting or target shooting with this build. Just a lights out, long range, light(ish) hunting rifle for elk and moose in grizzly country ( but not hunting bears specifically)
I used 195 Berger EOL out of my 28 Nos last season with success on elk… But I just love guns so much Im having a 300PRC built right now for elk this season. I don’t think you can go wrong with either, they are pretty damn close.
Could you achieve the same ballistics by using a 300wsm on a long action with more freebore and seat the same bullets out to the lands? I realize If running comparisons from factory vs factory the prc favors. But in my thoughts you could still achieve the same idea in a full custom WM or wsm chamber job
