From a finnish standpoint it is nice to hear that our engieering in arms production is appreciated. Your winchester .308 and the nato version are two of the most used cartridges in my country. About 50 000 moose meet their maker by a hit of a .308 winchester on a yearly basis
No one here in the US would believe you on that moose figure, or they’ll start in with the “they’re smaller over there” (like they’re certain they’re gonna shoot the new world record or something). What bullet, and at what distance are y’all usually shooting Alces alces? And how many shots taken? I take my .308 out moose hunting her in Alaska, but the moose have won every time so far.
@@509Gman Yeah i know it sounds a lot but it is just an yearly average. Last years moose kill count was 58219 heads. We have to keep the population down because they cause a lot of car crashes and deaths. I myself am a bowhunter but the shooting distances that i have personally seen are from 22 to 110 yards and the cartridges that lot of my friends use are the sako hammerhead 308 win 11.7g and lapua naturalis 308 win 11g. The hammerhead is a heavy hitter but wastes a lot of meat if you get a poor shot. Male moose weight in finland averages from 480 to 700 kilograms.

I can be nerdy, too. On the show, NCIS, Mark Harmon plays special agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Formerly, Gunnery Sergeant Leroy Jethro Gibbs of the US Marine Corps. (once a gunney, always a gunney.) They were investigating a case involving a sniper and had recovered enough evidence to determine it was a .338 Lapua. Which brought back Gunney Gibbs memories of his days as a Marine scout sniper. In service, his weapon was a .338 Lapua, picked for superior BC. Modernly, Barrett has made the MRAD system, first adopted by SOCOM to have three barrels and kits. .308 Win, .300 Norma Mag, and .338 Norma Mag. And then another special branch wanted more traditional barrels and parts and so another MRAD was built with .308 Win, .300 Win Mag, and .338 Lapua Mag. Nominally, the .308 is for practice but is also could for short distance urban conditions. .300 Norma Mag or Win Mag is for enemy agent interdiction. And the .338 Norma Mag or Lapua Mag is for materials interdiction, such as vehicles, objects. True, if they really want a big round at long distance, the .50 cal may take two people to deploy, one carrying the upper and the ammo, the other carrying the lower Or, they have a Ma Deuce and pray for a hit. I have read the memoirs of a few Ranger snipers. .300 Win Mag was popular because of the BC. Dial elevation, hold left or right edge of target into the wind and get a center of mass. Except for one guy, who was dubbed the Reaper, and he shot an SR-25,
Why didn't u mention a 338 edge or the 338 titan. The 338 is a 8.59 in metric. I got 7 338.maybe my fav caliber. I have a David Tubb 338 xc an 338 ai. Both in defiance deviant actions with 36.5 barrels. I do have a 338 lapua ,338-378 weatherby 31.5 barrel on a 1917 Enfield action. A 338 rum 31 inch barrel and a 338 edge. All but the edge have Krieger barrel. It's a Hart on the edge. Everyone needs to experience the 338 calibers. I'm getting 3394 with 230 bergers out of my 338 lazzaroni titan with a 36 inch barrel. That's smoking. My edge I'm getting 3294 with 225 barnes ttsx bullets with 98 grains of h1000. No pressure. Love your videos.
Looking to upgrade a Browning ABolt from 30.06 to 338 Lapua just in case I ever get to go to the Yukon. Inherited from my dad, and I already have a 30.06 so I don't need another one. The 338 will give me more knockdown up close and extend my range just in case I need it. Recoil is manageable under hunting conditions and I can use a lead sled at the range !!
I chose a 338 LM for more effectiveness on largest NA game at greater potential distances . I was very surprised at the 338 LMs inherent accuracy ! My Savage Stealth Evolution has consistently grouped in 1/2 moa and I have a few groups that are sub 1/2 moa with Hornady VLD match 285 grain loads . Hornady Precision Hunter 270 grain ELD-X is very close . I have some handloads using Barnes 280 grain LRX-BT with IMR 7828 yet to be tested .
I own both the .50 BMG and the 338 Lapua. Here are my thoughts. The. 50 BMG gun is huge and heavy and 3-4 MOA with military ball or maybe 2 MOA….maybe less… with match ammo. Oddly the ammo is cheaper than 338 LM. The 50 BMG is ultra loud. The overpressure is ridiculous. And, its a genuine liability to shoot as an errant projectile can travel 5-6 MILES. NO range in my state allows them. The 338 is an ultra powerful precision rifle cartridge. It was designed as a sniper cartridge to penetrate 5 layers of body armor at 1000 yards. The 338LM has a huge muzzle energy of maybe 5200 ft/lbs and requires an effective muzzle brake to shoot it well. However, the 50 BMG match rounds sling 750gr, high BC bullets at 13,900 ft/lbs!!……The only rifle capable of semi-comfortably shooting this round, in my opinion, is the Barrett M82A1………..The .50 BMG is in a league of its own no matter how you want to look at it.
I must have got lucky. I got an upper for an AR in 50 bmg. It shoots factory ball at 1 minute. The blast from it is guaranteed to put a smile on anybody's face. Surprisingly light recoil. I have a bad shoulder and I can shoot 10 rounds no problem.
@@michaelvangundy226 I’d have to see that for myself………the sweet shooting, light recoiling, cheap but 1moa AR upper in 50 BMG. Ha ha ha. There are no .50BMG “uppers”. Your .50 is something else.
@@michaelvangundy226 OK. Hardly a Barrett and No one that has a 50 cal bolt rifle has described the recoil other than ridiculous. It’s your call but I would be hesitant to light off a 50 BMG in anything other than a dedicated 50 BMG rifle. Good luck.
An episode on .17 caliber cartridges would be cool. The hot rod barrel burner 17 Remington at 4200 fps, 17 WSM rimfire at 3000 fps, 17 Mach 4 wildcat, 17 Hornet, 17 HMR, etc. Its one of the few loadings which can have a heavier powder charge than the weight of a bullet. (17 grain bullet, and 20+ grains of powder for example.) I’d love to see someone neck down a 50 BMG cartridge to .17 cal, and see what velocities a 15.5 grain round would reach with 220 grains of powder behind it.
So that unicorn you are talking about, I have one. TRG-S in 338 lapua and it has never been fired. Still have the 40 rounds of lapua ammo that I bought with it.
I love my .340 Weatherby which uses 20 grains less powder to do the same thing. It does have the belt and weird radius shoulder. The .338 Lapua requires a weird bolt face. The .338 Edge would be great but Remington brass limits it. These medium bores are great for taking energy out further. If you want to have the same amount at a .308 Winchester does at the muzzle at 500 yards, the .338's are the way to go.
340 Wby doesn’t use 20 grains less powder than the 338 Lapua. Maybe 5 grains. The 338-378 uses 15-20 grains more than the 340 but also gives you +200 FPS.
I think the single biggest reason for the .338Lapua not being offered by most rifle manufacturers is because it doesn't fit the "standard" in terms of bolt face and action length. It demands a larger action which doesn't readily fit a wide variety of other cartridges, and it takes a larger bolt face which also doesn't fit many "standard" cartridges. So any kind of "modularity" as far as the action itself is thrown out the window, and because it's so "specialized" it's kind of only suited for the .338 market and that's not a very large market segment so most manufacturers don't see a big enough return on investment to set up the manufacturing and tooling to make one. Ruger set themselves up quite nicely with the Ruger Precision rifle as "a step above" the Savage without going crazy on price, and I've seen a fair number of those rifles and people really like them.
Hi you need to have a talk about the Rem. Ultra mag 300-&338 cal. I have bout an their high accuracy in the 700 BDL SS rifle is a true 1000 +yd combo's very reliable Great product an USA made
great info on the 338 Lapua. Suggestion for next talk about ammo ballistics. there is all kinds of videos about 6.5 creedmoor vs 7.62x51 (308). but what nobody test or talks about is the expansion of the bullet when hitting its target. So i would like to know more on which is better for expansion of the 6.5 creedmoor vs 308.
I feel like the 338 Lapua never caught on in hunting because it fills such a small niche area. In Africa, most outfitter’s require 375 H&H as a minimum caliber for the big 5 and the 300 mag and 300 WSM kill all game smaller than that at average ethical distances with less recoil than the 338 Lapua (never shot a 338 so that’s just what I’ve heard). What do the rest of you think?
The 338 lapua didn't catch on for hunting because it's a beast of a round. If you shot a deer with that round it would wreck alot of meat. I have a 30 nosler and I wouldn't want to shoot a deer with it being muzzle energy is 4196 ft lbs and 3000 fps. The 338 lapua is another step up over my nosler
I dont have Lapua but i do have 338 weatherby its heavy but i prefer 300 or 30.06 270 for mid size to big game white tail elk moose and bear i stay with 30.06 for most hunting but to penetrate a engine yes the 338 weatherby and 300 win can go thru vehicle if they think a drive by is coming thanks for sharing
Man looking at that a year ago you were looking at a unicorn 🦄 of ammo there. I've always wanted the cartridge but can't find it anywhere so I'll stick with what I know until it become more available.
Just entering the world of PRS and have been looking at Savage Arms "Stealth" series, but in .308, 6.5 Creed or maybe .300 WinMag. Found a 'brand new', SA Stealth Evo, in a southpaw (a must) at a decent price, except its in .338. I am now researching everything I can on .338. As usual, start here at "Vortex Nation". I am hearing/reading, anything I wish to reach out and touch past 1000 yards should be done in .338. I am also hearing it might be "too much" for a novice in PRS....Interesting tidbit on Lapua .22's, I think I will head off and purchase some right now and have some fun.
I personally have 2 338 lapua rifles. One is a Ruger Precision (not bad), and the second started as a Remington 700M. Had a master gunsmith rebarrel with an ultra match, blueprint action, replace stock and install a magazine system. Remington actually more accurate at long range than stock Remington.
How often, if ever do you guys check the comments on the old podcasts? Would you guys consider doing a varmitting podcast? Maybe a cartridge talk about what rounds are best? Including barrel lengths? Bipods? Tripods? Spotters?
Why did the military select the 338 Norma over the 338 Lapua? Also, why is the 300 Norma ignored so much? Seems to be better on paper everywhere except extreme long range.
One advantage to the LM is you can get rifles with 10 round mags. I’m not sure if the RUM would also function in the LM magazines. Buddy took a elk with a 300 RUM it’s a sweet round also.
You should look into the 300 HAM'R by Wilson Combat. Neat and capable new round. Maybe add the other 223 based rounds like 25-45 Sharps. I just put one together for hunting. Also the new-ish Norma cartridges.

Love your videos.
awesome discussion on this round .
Need a podcast about the .338 Lapua, .338 Remington Ultra Mag, and the .338 Edge, as well as the A.I. all in one.
Recoil is manageable under hunting conditions and I can use a lead sled at the range !!
the 338 Lapua has more energy at 2km, than a 44mag has at the muzzle
.17 Remington!!! Do it. Very underrated.
I was in the U.S. Army infantry school in the 1980 and I was taught the .50 cal was to be used on personnel and equipment
Own a BK110 love it, also have weatherby .338/.378. Both are deadly on heavy American game. Both incredibly accurate
Would you do the 338-378 Weatherby? Nobody on UA-cam has a good video on it.
Very interesting to learn this info. Thank you.
@@747driver3
I bought it from Brownells about a decade ago. It's a bolt action single shot 30 inch barrel made by Zel Customs.
@@michaelvangundy226 OK. Hardly a Barrett and No one that has a 50 cal bolt rifle has described the recoil other than ridiculous. It’s your call but I would be hesitant to light off a 50 BMG in anything other than a dedicated 50 BMG rifle. Good luck.
280 Rem/280 AI are what IMO dream are made of!!! Would be a GREAt 10min (and much, much more) talk!!!!
340 Weatherby is almost identical ballistics. Definitely a close contender, what ammo is available for you?
Ammo about the same price
An episode on .17 caliber cartridges would be cool. The hot rod barrel burner 17 Remington at 4200 fps, 17 WSM rimfire at 3000 fps, 17 Mach 4 wildcat, 17 Hornet, 17 HMR, etc. Its one of the few loadings which can have a heavier powder charge than the weight of a bullet. (17 grain bullet, and 20+ grains of powder for example.)
I’d love to see someone neck down a 50 BMG cartridge to .17 cal, and see what velocities a 15.5 grain round would reach with 220 grains of powder behind it.
How about the .338 win mag?
So that unicorn you are talking about, I have one. TRG-S in 338 lapua and it has never been fired. Still have the 40 rounds of lapua ammo that I bought with it.
I always use to use the .338 Lapua for hunting
What about the 338rum? It a tiny bit off from the lapua no? Why no love for it?
Some folks complain about Lapua brass but it lasts twice as long reloading easily
What’s your opinions on 338 federal?
Please do an 8.6 blackout 10 minute talk!!!
Hi you need to have a talk about the Rem. Ultra mag 300-&338 cal. I have bout an their high accuracy in the 700 BDL SS rifle is a true 1000 +yd combo's very reliable Great product an USA made
Boot Obermeyer in Bristol WI was one of the initial developers of the 338 Lap
great info on the 338 Lapua.
How does the 338 Federal and 338 Win Mag stack up to the Lapua?
The 338 Federal is a completely different beast than the Lapua. It is a 308 necked up to 338. Less range, less ammo selection, more hitting power.
You are probably correct. I think ammunition cost may have something to do with it as well.
Definitely do a full length ackley improved episode. Or a t least a 10 minute on the 280 AI
Make a video on 338 Norma!
Is a hippopotamus just a really cool opotamus? Rip Mitch
How bout a discussion on the fastest 30 cal,the 30-378 Weatherby Magnum?👍😁
How is it for squirrels? I have a major squirrel problem, will this help take care of it.
Seems like 10 years ago there was a huge 110BA Stealth boom! Hell I almost bought one lol
338 Lapua and 338 Lapua Magnum are the same?
Thanks
Man looking at that a year ago you were looking at a unicorn 🦄 of ammo there. I've always wanted the cartridge but can't find it anywhere so I'll stick with what I know until it become more available.
lOOKING FOR INFO ON THE BEOWULF 50 CAL AR RELOADING
Do all the Weatherby cartridges!!!
Love to hear about the 270
Win
How about 6.5 Swede? Or, the entire line of Nosler calibers?
Please make a 10 minute talk about the 300 win mag =D
Do 300 Norma next.
Would love to see a podcast on the Sherman Mags. Super High BC 195gr Berger 7mm EOL @ 2950 out of a SHORT ACTION using less powder than a WM.
there are some nicer long range options like the .416 cheytec, but the .338 is a great round
Can you compare and contrast all WSMs and all relevant rifle straight walls!
I would love a ten minute on the.270
Can you guys do an episode on the .338 edge?
How often, if ever do you guys check the comments on the old podcasts? Would you guys consider doing a varmitting podcast? Maybe a cartridge talk about what rounds are best? Including barrel lengths? Bipods? Tripods? Spotters?
That would be a pretty neat one to dive into - we'll definitely look into. Thanks for the request and for tuning in :)
I am going on a North America tour next year for big game
Makes you wonder if its not true brass but a brass plated steel near the primer and ejector collar...?
I romanticize the cartridge. Would love a conventional stock, 20-22” barrel .338 lapua with a box mag.
Look at the Savage Long Range Hunter, which gives you all of that, although the barrel is longer. But that is easily changed.
Why did the military select the 338 Norma over the 338 Lapua? Also, why is the 300 Norma ignored so much? Seems to be better on paper everywhere except extreme long range.
If I was going to buy a 338 it’d be the 338 RUM. The only time the RUM falls behind the Lapua is with 300 gr bullets
One advantage to the LM is you can get rifles with 10 round mags. I’m not sure if the RUM would also function in the LM magazines. Buddy took a elk with a 300 RUM it’s a sweet round also.
My 338 Lapua Magnum Savage, MDT chasse LSS XL
You should look into the 300 HAM'R by Wilson Combat. Neat and capable new round. Maybe add the other 223 based rounds like 25-45 Sharps. I just put one together for hunting.
Also the new-ish Norma cartridges.
You forgot the 330 Dakota. It's a wild cat but still a great cartridge.
"He wept when he opened it up " 😂😂😂😂
great video series
We had a lot of case splitting with our 50 cals
Need to do 338 NORMA
