I can't understand how or why restaurants ends up like this. I worked in a pizzaria when I was 14-15, and it was the best work experience I've ever had. It was organized in an effective and logical way, and pizzas flew out. I grated cheese, cut mushrooms/beef/anything, then did cleanup and dishes during service. Loved that, even if boring, because the owner was a class act who set the mood in a positive spirit. When someone ordered anything but pizza (3-4 times a week) the chef and owner lit up and made it with tons of love and passion. Sometimes they sang and danced around while cooking, haha. It was unbelievable delicious food. I usually got a surprise pizza, surprise soda, or surprise extra cash. Kinda big when you're 14! They later expanded the business to about 20 tables and focused more on italian dishes, and it's a raging success. So how tf anyone think a restaurant can be managed by screaming and yelling is besides me.
Simple: People with money drive by a closed restaurant and see a for sale sign, buy it, with no expierence or knowledge about restaurants. Or parents buy them for their spoilt brats (as seen before as well), while the spoilt brats don´t have any expierence either. There are some industries were people think "oh, its so easy to own this and you basically earn money without doing any work (bc staff) - and they are relatively easy to open - speaking from what I learned in my year living in the US, and this show (which of course are limited views) - every idiot is allowed to open a restaurant. In my country to be able to open a restaurant you need a license, which you only get if you did a three-year apprenticeship, (which involves working full time and some basic schooling) or you attendend a high school focused on tourism and such and internships as work expierence - which is also not a lot, but still better.
Honestly I wish I were you, I also started working since I was 13 yo. but in my case, my experience is pretty horrible. I'm happy to read that you had the opportunity to work in a really great atmosphere, I hope you'll have the same luck as back then!
@@jennuar2617 Did you start in the restaurant business? What do you mean by horrible? Was the kitchen in dismay, managment problems, bullying? Sorry to hear it was horrible. I've not had the same luck at all, everything has been going downhill since.
I wish my first job was like that. Instead I had a weird boss who would make inappropriate jokes and remarks and make everyone feel uncomfortable. Very toxic work environment.
Seriously, all of the staff worked surprisingly well together -- you could tell they were trying their hardest, they just had to deal with some serious incompetence in management. All the staff were so professional, and were all on the same page of what exactly the problem was, they all gave the same, consistent response: owners were the problem. The cooks didn't even get defensive about the food when Gordon didn't like it (as is often the case with the chefs) -- they took the criticism, already knew it was subpar, and were eager to change it. Up until then, they had been doing what they were told, by the incompetent owners. The kids were mature and prepared to fix things, the whole staff was. Really sad that the key components were the problem, because the rest of the restaurant had such a good vibe with each other otherwise. If only Joli and Van could take over and spearhead the restaurant. They had some great examples of what NOT to do.
As a mother, how she can stand by whilst her husband treats her children like utter crap astounds me. If anyone talked to or treated my girls like that they would be out the door. The minute he started to throw stuff at Van I would have been packing his bags and serving papers.
I'm SO grateful that they separated. He was an abusive assbutt towards both her and her son. I hope he's in an alley somewhere, rotting. I've never witnessed so much verbal abuse and gaslighting in my entire life.

Obviously this episode was one of the more extreme and realistic. Still the man never said things like "hes not my son". Nobody is this terrible and its all exaggerated for TV purpose. Dont be dumb kids please !!!
"your son not mine" that was honestly gross of him to say. He acknowledges him as a step father and cared about the family restaurant only to be spit on like that. He doesn't deserve to even look at the kid.
It's easy to kick the step-father for saying that, but have you ever come across mixed families where the maternal or paternal parent is very possessive of their child to the point of favoring them over their spouse? Or threatening their spouse with divorce if the latter parents with authority as the new mother or father? Easy to throw stones while watching a severely edited video that gives us almost zero context of a married couple. This show brings out the best and worst in us.
@@Goodyearmonkey- Each situation is unique. Some step-children are very disrespectful of the new step-parent. Or vice versa where the step-parent is not being a good fill-in. Maternal or paternal parents can also be so protective that the new spouse has almost zero authority as an elder/step-parent. Which can lead to big problems the blood parent and their spouse. Hopefully, y'all figure things out and love each other well as a family.
Cafe Tavolini closed in December 2010, just after Christmas. The restaurant was investigated by the Attorney General for selling gift cards right before closing. The owners said they closed due to medical reasons.
The Husbands idea I would bet . I kinda knew they would have failed after getting such excellent advice, clearly proving the problem was the marriage and especially the husband . Nonchalant, as the business is dying . It’s always the wife who suffers the most it seems . All the pressure seems to fall on them .
I feel like maybe even actual parents just want to say that sometimes because my mom would say to my biological dad “look at your daughter this has nothing to do with me” I’m like there were witnesses seeing me coming out of your body what do you mean mom
I'm so sorry for their mature kids, they were so commited and for all the staff. It would have been wonderful of they could get into the business and run the renovated restaurant
I appreciate the honesty of the show, just showing how the restaurant closed up. Some people might interpret it like Gordon Ramsay failed, but really it's up to the owners.
this show actually opened up my eye on food business since my parents owns a restaurant (low to mid class, not the likes of which is shown in KN). Many of the advice he give is actually pretty solid based on the performance of our store. 1. Owner must always be there to monitor the staff(since my mother is sick, the performance of our restaurant has a noticeable dent due to staff problem, rectified by promoting my sisters in law(she was already working on the place, but as a cashier) to replaced my mom. Everything she sees there is reported back to my mother and she become my mouther's right hand man.) 2. Taking care of the restaurant cleanliness has both physical and mentally benefits(it shows you actually care about the damn place and makes you feel proud to work there. Not to mention the hygiene.) 3. Always cook fresh food with fresh ingredient.(Ngl however, that this practice nearly drove us to bankruptcy when Covid-19 hits. Its simply hard to keep fresh food in when the price of the goods began skyrocketing and our reg. customers were no longer coming. Thankfully we managed to hold on long enough until the situation recovered.)
most restronts in this show do not make it. the debts kill them or even with the changes its not enough to save them. some are just sold off after filming.

Here’s the Google status of the restaurant 10 September 2021: Cafe Tavolini has a very sad ending. Keith and Lisa separated soon after filming and the restaurant really had no chance. The restaurant closed for good in December, 2011. It seems the main reason for the closure is that Cafe Tavolini’s debt bill had just grown too large. With such a large debt to start with, I don’t think Gordon really had any chance with this restaurant. Some of the staff, notably Chef Michael Sirico, have moved on to B Line Bar & Grill.
If they would have been honest with the numbers, Gordon might not have bothered in the first place. But honesty and these owners don't fit well together.
@@gremlinwithgun7527 Well, the husband-wife relationship has been wrecked for 5 years, so it was probably already hard for them to keep working together.
I'm convinced most restaurants only went on this show for the free renovation and then they could try to sell the business for a bit more. Because most of these businesses end up like this. Huge amounts of debt. At the end of the day Gordon's help isn't really that helpful. His help will never shift the hundreds of thousands of debt.
They should’ve handed the restaurant over to the kids. They were more interested and dedicated to that business than the owners ever were. Was not surprised with how this episode ended. Good effort Gordon. Sometimes you can only do so much.

They had some great examples of what NOT to do.

this show actually opened up my eye on food business since my parents owns a restaurant (low to mid class, not the likes of which is shown in KN). Many of the advice he give is actually pretty solid based on the performance of our store.
1. Everything she sees there is reported back to my mother and she become my mouther's right hand man.)
2. Taking care of the restaurant cleanliness has both physical and mentally benefits(it shows you actually care about the damn place and makes you feel proud to work there. Not to mention the hygiene.)
3. Always cook fresh food with fresh ingredient.(Ngl however, that this practice nearly drove us to bankruptcy when Covid-19 hits. Its simply hard to keep fresh food in when the price of the goods began skyrocketing and our reg. customers were no longer coming. Cafe Tavolini has a very sad ending. Keith and Lisa separated soon after filming and the restaurant really had no chance. The restaurant closed for good in December, 2011.

Oh totally. he's so manipulative with blaming his wife for everything too. Everything is either Van's or Lisa's fault, never his.
@@katiewallis4788Lisa is equally shitty
@@cine-ish how so?
@@cine-ish nvm, i commentsd before i saw her sitting in a car with her husband complaining about how hungry she is😭 so childish
@@daniellerrrrrrrrr yep, they're perfect for each other as they're both shit heads
27:45 That slurping sound effect!! 🤣 This is why I love American Kitchen Nightmares. The post-production team went full Looney Tunes in the editing 😂
Van is an expetional son , his has so much potential and is so driven as well as on top of things, His sister Jolie is also open and honest ,I like that and his parents are just down right pathetic
Expetional? 😂😂😂
@@African.empress shut up
😂
I cannot believe the kid came back to reintroduce himself...
Secret agent Van 😎
imagine walking by a store that has a sign up sayin "for rent/sale" and instantly think, "lets buy this shit even if we dont know how to deal with business."
lmao💀
28:09 where gordon just starts slamming his head on the wall in frustration is hilarious
Honestly Van acted like more of an actual owner than his parents. It probly would've stayed open if Van had been in charge.
You can tell Gordon has lived his life. He was working class but overcame all the shit from his early life. He’s a real grafter. He loves his family and has never lost touch with reality
I live where he comes from and its one of the poorest, drug riddled, violent areas in Scotland and I've only lived her 2 months and im outta here in the new year.
His brother is still on the streets with a drug problem as far as I know. Gordon's passion dragged him out of terrible fates, either living on the street or dead. He has no patience for wasted time nor family bullshit. He's seen the worst.
Gordon has an abusive father, a drug addict brother, a father-in-law who stole his identity for scam (if I'm not wrong) and don't forget he was Marco Pierre White's student who made him becomes the famous celebrity chef with "mean" personality. If you think Gordon is tough, you should see how Marco look like. It's like you thought Gordon is the final boss and you accidentally unlocked Marco as the real final boss in video game.
"it tasts like a stuffing you'd stick in the arse end of a turkey." honest and brutal, love Ramsey's quick and eligant wits.
Premade stuffing I’m sure he meant.
The stale leftover shit your family had sitting since last year thanksgiving. Don’t ask me how I know…
5 minutes in and it's like the kid knows more and is more willing to accept responsibility and then either of his parents combined
I love how he and Van act like they weren't just in the car together.
I DASHED OVER, IT’S FULL EP FRIDAY HELL YEAH
Van genuinly seemes like such a smart and nice guy
The two of them really deserve each other. Seriously
good service staff - yes
good kitchen staff - yes
good food - better than other kitchen nightmares
good location - yes
Owners: everything is good so we just sit on the couch at watch cctv
Nah, that's too much work, they prefer to sit in the car and smoke a cigar and eat dinner.
It really must have taken some hard work and talent to make such a great business fail. I guess in a way that couple was gifted...
This restaurant have so much potential tbh
The waiter really put ‘honest is the best policy’ too hard 😂 (due to some people can’t take jokes that much, I watched this many time and I love the waiter . Yes what he did was amazing because his brave. If you can’t take a simple joke than ask yourself why people stay away from you)
Well that business is a big part of his life. It’s his family
How can you say something like that ‘too hard’ honesty will always be the best policy! It just shows how determined he is about the business
He’s amazing

When your stepdad tells you to "watch yourself bro, before I elbow ya"... You should fake your mom's signature and get a devorce going.

Now.... tell the camera everything you just said **cough** /have you done this before?/
Lmao, your comment deserves more likes. I'm literally crying 😂
Nothin u can do about it when she literally runs in the car with him everytime something bad happens
This was a very good episode. The energy they display. The concern for their restaurant, and family. What a great experience watching everything come together.
