I never realized just how young Bart sounds. I didn't know this until looking it up, but he was only 19 years old. He sounds so passionate and in awe of everything. All he wanted to do was research and learn. I feel so bad for him. Obviously Paul and Maida as well, but Bart was so level-headed. Being the mature one at a younger age couldn't have been easy, especially with how hot-headed his father and Maida were (or are in Maida's case.) Subnautica's stories are so well written and portrayed. They're all so devastating when you really pay attention to the contents and apply them to real life. Your videos on the survivors are so well done. The attention to detail is astounding, and I can only imagine how long it all took. And to add the first person perspectives with the reconstructed bases and imagery makes it so much more engrossing! Massive respect and very well done!!
Reminds me of the world building in a lot of the Fallout games and piecing together the lives of long dead people through all these little environment and context clues, and sometimes written/spoken log entries. Really makes the whole world feel much more real, and the crushing sadness of everything that's transpired before you much more impactful.
I love how the team put this much effort into a side story. Such a great way to let us hear about things others did to survive and hint at some things we can make.
Goes to show how good the player character has it. Better fabrication tools, better equipment, better weather and a full understanding of what is going on (at least, once the sunbeam event happens) What the degasi crew was missing was exploration. Complete mapping. One was too busy being careful, one was too busy studying wildlife and the other was too busy killing stuff
2 things I noticed: Paul saw a light below him so I think he found the lost river and not a squid. He might have been killed by one though. This makes more sense since it's a hint for the player to go deeper. Bart talks about visions getting worse. I don't think Kharaa causes these so it's most likely the sea emperor trying to communicate with him like she does with the player but Bart thinks it's the illness.
@@escaped_cephalopodwell, i kind of always figured that she didn’t trust them. the sea emperor is canonically shy and timid, she has a hard time trusting people because of what happened to her and her babies. why would she attempt to communicate with a hot headed, blinded-by-rage lady and a cowardly and stuck up man? the only person that showed interest in the ecosystem, the virus, and had a good heart was bart. she trusted him. perhaps thats why she asked what we are. not because she doesn’t know what a human is, she has to, she has seen them before. maybe she asked because she was curious “if you swam with the current or against it”
@chenath9582 well shes canonically over a thousand years old lol. She talks about the percursers like she was there, that it was the same batch of eggs they were trying to hatch that you have to. The universe has telepathic individuals, it is an established ability held by some. We see the Sea Emperor communicating with Riley no matter where he is on the map, thats targetted telepathy at over 1 and a half kilometres sometimes. Extrapolating and inferring from that data, we can make the reasonable assumption that she has insight into what you're thinking/feeling. I would imagine that she wanted a sentient being that understood her beyond pure comprehension. She wanted to trust her babies to a likeminded soul. If you want more than that then, yeah, we trigger hormonal releases to feel emotions. Sea Emporer has canon enzyme manufacturing abillities, ones she implies she either has command over or understands the inner-workings of to some degree - she mentions in some of her dialogue something like "the aliens foolishly tried to synthesise it" as if it were impossible to synthesise and she knew that and knew why. Understanding beyond estimation at least. If you combine those two things, it isnt a stretch to say she has some kind of untethered connection to the planets ecosystem, that through this she can confirm telepathic readings that you genuinely engage empathy towards her and the planet, and that, in-turn, you are the correct vector of the enzyme knowledge. She was also probably lowkey super deseperate at that point and was largely more willing to trust us than others until that point. I like to imagine the Sea Emporer as the devs attempt at showing the "waking earth" theory. That we are an integral part of a totally interconnected ecosystem, not above it. That, in a cool and weird, fairly philosophical way, we are the planet evolved to observe itself. We are the macroscopic white blood cells of the planetary organism, the sentient caretaking component of an ancient and relatively infinite being. Sea Emperors quite literally take this role in a number of ways. Humans should be the Sea Emperors of Earth, but are too indoctrinated by the Alterra's of our world. That we own all, when simply, we belong.
I had done what I thought was adequate research to write a fanfic about them but wow I was missing a lot. You did such an amazing job with this and I really enjoyed the visuals. 10/10
17:00 wow, i never knew margeruite is such a monster hunter. I would really love her to see toe-to-toe against an elder dragon if she can tangle with a reaper leviathan, win, and use its body for stuffs.
Mercury II’s Survivors and their fate maybe? Even though the game pretty much spells it out I’d still like to hear it all in one sitting without stopping.
Genghis Khan had mentioned it in a secret script that had been discovered near the end of 21st century - " I growing old. I know I won't be able to conquer the world. What I have done is still going to be one of the biggest empires in history. I have just one wish, i want the mongols to conquer the stars. " And it all began right there, Mongols knew what to do.
What surprises me about the first base of the island its the fact that there is a cave system with the gigantic alien portal on it and the degasi crew didn't find that even living there that ammont of time. I don't know if this Is explained because "in gameplay" the island its small but in lore was bigger like the maps and cities of other games like fallout or skyrim. But for me its quite surprising that they found that alien object on the island and don't searched more both over the land and under to see those gigantic floaters.
I think they either didn’t find it (could have been opened up by a landslide after they left), they DID find it, but didn’t make a pda entry for it, or if they did make a pda entry, it might have been destroyed or buried when the first landslide destroyed the base
In my first playthrough, my first exposure to the floating island was that teleporter. Definitely one of those crowning moments of the game "wait... the other side of the aurora??" And "THERES NO BOTTOM AAAAAAAAH" Think I also had a dream where if you went near the water, a leviathan would cutscene you off the beach lol.
Make a below zero one. I played the game a long time and discovered that Marguerite is alive and was actually dragged to the void and appeared to the below zero map. Maybe she was dragged to the other side of the planet which explains why so many fish are the same and some are different due to the environment.
I plan to do a whole video on Marguerite at some point, I decided not to include the BZ story here because half the video would have just been about that
Imagine the massive amounts of research Bart Torgal must have accumulated over his time on 4546B. All that information would be vital to fully understanding the secrets of the (at the time) uncharted planet. It's a shame it was all most likely destroyed by the crashing of the Aurora, and the sequential decimation of the immediate local ecosystem/environment.
Well, at least Maida survived. Wish we could’ve gotten some PDAs or something about her experiences. Bart being caught in the middle is a tough thing to see. I hope Paul was at peace with the decisions he made.
i honestly do not get why people drag paul in the dirt so much. he was an old man, scared for his son and scared for his life. i bet he had a fear of the ocean too with how horrific he found going into the ocean water was. margeurit constantly shamed him, but all paul wanted to do was make sure bart was okay. i know he wasnt the smartest, and it was partly his fault for the lack of research due to his constant hovering over bart. but you gotta feel bad for the poor guy, right? is it weird that i hope that when bart died, paul was waiting for him as a ghost? i know its corny, lol, but i just.. feel so bad for this small family.
Both Paul and Marguerit were wrong for different reasons. Paul was excessively cautious while Maida was excessively aggressive. They both contributed to the trio's downfall through their bickering and unwillingness to work together off one another's strengths. Maida dragging an unconscious Reaper to the base was just the final shot in a rather long back-and-forth of hostility between them.
Very well edited video; the images on screen represented the audio perfectly and it must've taken a while to get the footage so I commend you for that! I would really appreciate it if you were to make a video in the same style of this one for the Mercury II since it's pretty much Below Zero's Degasi and I don't really understand its story all to well. You have a bright future in UA-cam and I hope you continue to put great effort into your videos, thanks!
Such a shame what happened to the degasi crew. I’m curious to know what would’ve happened if the other 3 members survived. Maybe more input would have led them to discovering the truth of the aliens, reinforcement platform, the sea emperor etc. And to think that Bart (and kind of margeruite) were on the right path to figuring out all the things that ryley eventually did. Also a shame that the aurora destroyed barts final base. Would’ve liked to have seen those pda’s. I wonder what I would’ve been like if the reaper never destroyed their base. What if ryley was part of the degasi crew. There’s so much potential for what if scenarios about this game. I know that Marguerite survives and is in below zero, but I haven’t played it yet, so idk if she mentions the events of the first game, or anything else she has to offer. Great video, I continue to see how amazing this game is, and its community makes it all the better 😁
You did a great job with the video cuz there was nothing on the screen that we really had to watch so I could just have it on in the background as I did stuff.
I believe it was a Sea Dragon Leviathan that destroyed the deep grand reef base. My reasoning is that Paul had already seen a reaper, he saw the one Marguerit had outside, and he describes it as an alien kraken bigger than a cyclops. Reapers are the same size as a cyclops. He also describes it as having tentacles which makes me think of sea dragons more than the appendages on a reaper. I think the wounded and bleeding reaper she brought back to base lured a Sea Dragon from below for an easy meal.
Reapers have a kraken like look due to its colours and mandibles it was bigger than a cyclops aswell it was 55m in length slightly longer than the cylcops
Excellent video, wow!!! Thank you very much for putting it together, as I love the story. Your voiceover is great too, made it so I could listen while I got had my hands busy!
That would be cool, however it would also be pretty difficult to pull off as the story of the crew members is already told. It would be hard to give the player freedom over what they do if they already have a story.
great video! surprised on how little subs you have. I wish you could've included Marguerit Maida's story after the events of the first game, maybe in another video?
I plan to make a whole video on her. I was gonna include all of that in this one, but I feel like her BZ story is distinct enough from the DEGASI to warrant its own documentary
Marguerrit surviving both kharrah and the void absolutely make no sense, it was just the devs desperately wanting to connect the first game with below zero, period.
@@escaped_cephalopod eh, fair enough. personally, I choose to just ignore Below Zero since it's a below average game in my opinion. I still love playing the 1st game at least once a year.
It's neat how well Bart's final log foreshadows the sea emperor once you know what to look for. Visions about how his father and Maida are part of the planet's ecosystem now? Well, the one creature that shows telepathic capabilities happens to share that same philosophy of either reincarnation or unity with nature after death (speaking of how maybe when you next meet she'll be an ocean current or a creature tiny enough to see between the grains of sand)
Unknown to them, Maruerit (I probably butchered her name) survived, even past the time of the Aurora crash and the time that Ryley Robinson was on the planet.
just got into the game and just completed it without recalling finding any of this stuff i’m so obsessed with this game and its lore now thanks for making this
Amazing video! I just finished the game and I had no motivation to go through the logs again to have a better look at the whole story, so this is way better, thank you! I'm just wondering, how did you manage to have the leviathan appear in the grand reef (the 500meter deep zone)? Incredible visuals btw, great job!
25:10 Was it ever confirmed that it was a crab? What if it was the emperor trying to contact them? Bart mentions the "Visions" which I believe to have been from the emperor so it could be possible that is what his father saw?
It was probably the emperor, but Bart thought it must be hallucinations from the disease. If they had gone just a little deeper, they would have found the path to salvation.
i wish leviathans and stuff could destroy the bases you make in the game, it would make them a lot scarier and would make you reconsider where you put your base
Personaly I always thought the "kraken" that attacked the 500 depth base was a Seadragon, not a reaper. Paul mentions tentacles, calls it a kraken and reapers are the prey of seadragons, so maybe a fresh one was too much to pass up? And of course ingame mechanics lock creatures on each biome, but in nature animals, even more apex predators, do as they please, so it's not that hard to imagine a seadragon hunting for reapers outside the lava zones. i feel bad for Bart, he was young and such a romantic, kid deserved better. Does anyone know when the Degasi crashed on 4546B? Like how many years/months before the Aurora? I might have missed that information. But the greatest mystery of all to me is why a Mongolian had such a thick Scotish accent... guess we'll never know...
“Natural growth rate” Idk about you guys, but each growth bed can hold 16 Marblemelon seeds and 3 melons can fill my entire food and water. The fourth one can be replanted as 4 seeds. Not sure how they can’t survive. They should just get good.
Was the Final Base that Bart built ever in the Game? I don't Remember seeing any bases in the safe shallows Edit: It was on the Crash Zone. I'm Stoopid
Id say both paul and maida had good points and bad points, paul wanted to resonably stay on the floating island to not be with the Extremely dangerous sea, marda knew they wouldn't last on the island since they were running out of.....well basicly everything, so they went in the mushroom cave, they fialed to make the first base there since it kept falling apart, they finnaly succeded in making the base, it was leaking but it could work, bart started his research, then they had to move deeper beacuse of bart asking to go there, paul didn't want to but maida wanted to, they both got scared after finding out they had the khaara so depeet they went, they went deeper only meters away from the lost river, the bart asked for more samples, maida brought what i think is a juivenile Reaper leviathan since she somehow dragget it all the way down there, whic means the other Reaper was problably a pissed of parent, they all got stranded, paul died shortly there after, problably by wandering in the lost river since he was " following a light " and got either eaten by a crab squid or something else, maida fought the Reaper ( and killed it ) and somehow survived both the Reaper and reached the artic continent, bart went back to the surface and made a base where the aurora would crash, before dying he had vissiobs by the sea emperor ( which he though were illusions by the khaara ) and then died beacuse of the khaara
it's made extra unfortunate when you consider that both of them were smart and read each side of each situation if they had just stopped arguing so often they might have made it back alive
I'm enjoying these lore videos of yours. I'm curious though, why do people say that Paul was killed by the Crabsquid? I know there is the trailer, but how do people know that is actually Paul? Is it just speculation again? Regardless, are you going to continue with Below Zero lore? I think a deep dive (heh) video on the infected Ice Beast would be cool.
I've always assumed Paul was indirectly killed by a Warper. He descripes seeing a "blue light" below him, but when he swims closer it's gone, causing him to wonder if he'd seen anything at all. Then he simply drowns because he says he's low on oxygen.
@@Breathtaker5000 In the absence of any actual definitive answer to how he died, that interpretation is just as good as mine. Personally I like mine better simply because I like the Warpers, but yours would give the Crabsquid some love. The Warpers are already credited in killing basically half of all the survivors, so they can settle for having killed one less.
I know the creature we heard did sound like a reaper but the waypaul describes it it sounds more like a sea dragon, as the reaper isnt much longer than a cyclops by like 3 meters, hes says kraken, and with how close they were to the lost river even being right near sea dragon kill you can scan, its more likely a sea dragon smelled the injured reaper and came looking for an easy meal as the scent just happened to be coming from where one of the exits to his hunting grounds
Update: I feel dumb now after watching a full lore video (I know it been 2 months but someone commented on my other comment about maida living), BUT I still feel like Paul described a sea dragon, the devs just nerfed the situation by saying it was a reaper.

I was so busy that I didn't ever consider the logs much, but with this talented narration I can fully appreciate the writing and character arcs. They're better than I thought.
Why not listen to them at base?
Better fabrication tools, better equipment, better weather and a full understanding of what is going on (at least, once the sunbeam event happens)
What the degasi crew was missing was exploration. Complete mapping. One was too busy being careful, one was too busy studying wildlife and the other was too busy killing stuff
it was so amazing that you rebuilt the abandoned bases! nice work!
Thanks :)
2 things I noticed:
Paul saw a light below him so I think he found the lost river and not a squid. He might have been killed by one though. This makes more sense since it's a hint for the player to go deeper.
Bart talks about visions getting worse. I don't think Kharaa causes these so it's most likely the sea emperor trying to communicate with him like she does with the player but Bart thinks it's the illness.
Yea, but, why didn’t she send all of them visions when, y’know, they were all still alive and working together?
@@escaped_cephalopodwell, i kind of always figured that she didn’t trust them. the sea emperor is canonically shy and timid, she has a hard time trusting people because of what happened to her and her babies. why would she attempt to communicate with a hot headed, blinded-by-rage lady and a cowardly and stuck up man? the only person that showed interest in the ecosystem, the virus, and had a good heart was bart. she trusted him.
perhaps thats why she asked what we are. not because she doesn’t know what a human is, she has to, she has seen them before. maybe she asked because she was curious “if you swam with the current or against it”
it says in the lore that he goes towards a light, thinking its his sons seaglide, and then it turns out to be a crabsquid
@@waah5901I’m concerned that my first thought when reading the last paragraph was “yea, it’s a giant computer made to calculate the meaning of life”

Glad you liked it :D
What about your fanfic?
ooh did you ever write the fic?
17:00 wow, i never knew margeruite is such a monster hunter. I would really love her to see toe-to-toe against an elder dragon if she can tangle with a reaper leviathan, win, and use its body for stuffs.

Mercury II’s Survivors and their fate maybe? Even though the game pretty much spells it out I’d still like to hear it all in one sitting without stopping.
It’s definitely on the to-do list :)
The fact that the Mongolians have strong tenure in space exploration raises lots and LOTS of questions!

I don't remember a portal on that island. Where does it lead?
@speedude0164 mountain island. Need to head to mountain island portal first in order to turn it on
@@cabz5872 Yeah I just saw someone else online find it. I'll go there myself when I can.
In my first playthrough, my first exposure to the floating island was that teleporter. Definitely one of those crowning moments of the game "wait... the other side of the aurora??" And "THERES NO BOTTOM AAAAAAAAH"
Think I also had a dream where if you went near the water, a leviathan would cutscene you off the beach lol.
Make a below zero one. I played the game a long time and discovered that Marguerite is alive and was actually dragged to the void and appeared to the below zero map. Maybe she was dragged to the other side of the planet which explains why so many fish are the same and some are different due to the environment.
I second this!
I plan to do a whole video on Marguerite at some point, I decided not to include the BZ story here because half the video would have just been about that
She survived in a reapers corpse eating off of it till she got to the artic where there she made a base and just chilled
@@jaymeegrayson4662 yeah she is such a badass
It doesn't make sense that she survived since she had Karaa for 10 years before Riley cured it.
Imagine the massive amounts of research Bart Torgal must have accumulated over his time on 4546B. All that information would be vital to fully understanding the secrets of the (at the time) uncharted planet.
It's a shame it was all most likely destroyed by the crashing of the Aurora, and the sequential decimation of the immediate local ecosystem/environment.
poor paul he got baited by a crabsquid a died it's a sad story of these three atleast we meet one
Well, at least Maida survived. Wish we could’ve gotten some PDAs or something about her experiences. Bart being caught in the middle is a tough thing to see. I hope Paul was at peace with the decisions he made.
Awesome video. So well made. I feel so bad for Bart. He seemed so sweet.
i honestly do not get why people drag paul in the dirt so much. he was an old man, scared for his son and scared for his life. i bet he had a fear of the ocean too with how horrific he found going into the ocean water was.
margeurit constantly shamed him, but all paul wanted to do was make sure bart was okay.
i know he wasnt the smartest, and it was partly his fault for the lack of research due to his constant hovering over bart. but you gotta feel bad for the poor guy, right?
is it weird that i hope that when bart died, paul was waiting for him as a ghost? i know its corny, lol, but i just.. feel so bad for this small family.

Bart's side of the story is actually really sad, stuck on a planet with only 2 others, who then disappear and is stuck to live out is short life alone
I find it ironic that Margaret didnt want to stay in the "cave" and then look at where her base is in Below Zero.

I've been looking for a video like this for a bit to reminisce! Great job!
You put a lot of work into this and it shows.
Really great vid, thanks for this, you definitely earned a sub.

Incredible effort went into this video. Well done.
*storm going on outside with high chance of killing their whole food supply*
Paul: "I know how to prioritize"
yeah bud, sure you do
You did a great job with the video cuz there was nothing on the screen that we really had to watch so I could just have it on in the background as I did stuff.
Probably, There's a reaper head bone down there
Reapers have a kraken like look due to its colours and mandibles it was bigger than a cyclops aswell it was 55m in length slightly longer than the cylcops
Your videos are very interesting, like I already said earlier. You deserve way more subs fr. Keep up the work!
Glad you like them! :)
Excellent video, wow!!! Thank you very much for putting it together, as I love the story. Your voiceover is great too, made it so I could listen while I got had my hands busy!
Kudos for this video, great storytelling!
Unknown worlds entertainment needs a prequel where you play as someone from the degasi
I wanted to ask you how long it took to craft all those plasteel ingots but then I remembered creative exists. Anyway great video.
Thanks!
Thanks for putting the lore info together. Listening to them in order in game is alright, but your visuals really bring out the story.
Man, the voice acting is so good, I feel like it's real and I actually feel bad
looking at the cinematic trailer the lore of the degasi is shown pretty well, not exact but pretty well
Marguerrit surviving both kharrah and the void absolutely make no sense, it was just the devs desperately wanting to connect the first game with below zero, period.
Yeah but its funny
@@escaped_cephalopod eh, fair enough. personally, I choose to just ignore Below Zero since it's a below average game in my opinion. I still love playing the 1st game at least once a year.

Une vidéo de qualité,on voit clairement que tu prends du temps et du plaisir à les faire
This was really good i would never have understanded this without you, thanks
It's neat how well Bart's final log foreshadows the sea emperor once you know what to look for. Visions about how his father and Maida are part of the planet's ecosystem now? Well, the one creature that shows telepathic capabilities happens to share that same philosophy of either reincarnation or unity with nature after death (speaking of how maybe when you next meet she'll be an ocean current or a creature tiny enough to see between the grains of sand)
Also the hallucinations he mentions, it would make sense that the sea emperor would try to communicate with him
The footage and recreations of the events are so well crafted❤
Nice vid man. Seems like this game is getting alot of new players as well.
Unknown to them, Maruerit (I probably butchered her name) survived, even past the time of the Aurora crash and the time that Ryley Robinson was on the planet.

I just spawned it in with console commands :)

This was a great video, just the outro though, from scary to normal/happy
You are the guy that help's my get the stuf together!

@@lukedovzikhe means the aurora landed on it
Id say both paul and maida had good points and bad points, paul wanted to resonably stay on the floating island to not be with the Extremely dangerous sea, marda knew they wouldn't last on the island since they were running out of.....well basicly everything, so they went in the mushroom cave, they fialed to make the first base there since it kept falling apart, they finnaly succeded in making the base, it was leaking but it could work, bart started his research, then they had to move deeper beacuse of bart asking to go there, paul didn't want to but maida wanted to, they both got scared after finding out they had the khaara so depeet they went, they went deeper only meters away from the lost river, the bart asked for more samples, maida brought what i think is a juivenile Reaper leviathan since she somehow dragget it all the way down there, whic means the other Reaper was problably a pissed of parent, they all got stranded, paul died shortly there after, problably by wandering in the lost river since he was " following a light " and got either eaten by a crab squid or something else, maida fought the Reaper ( and killed it ) and somehow survived both the Reaper and reached the artic continent, bart went back to the surface and made a base where the aurora would crash, before dying he had vissiobs by the sea emperor ( which he though were illusions by the khaara ) and then died beacuse of the khaara

@@devoutrelic1228 Never, that does make a lot of sense and then I imagine that other creatures picked up the sense of his blood.
I got the information about Paul’s death from the wiki and the first trailer, where it shows (presumably) Paul getting attacked by a crabsquid
The trailer analysis bit is somewhat of an educated guess
@@Breathtaker5000 In the absence of any actual definitive answer to how he died, that interpretation is just as good as mine. Personally I like mine better simply because I like the Warpers, but yours would give the Crabsquid some love. The Warpers are already credited in killing basically half of all the survivors, so they can settle for having killed one less.
my question is, shouldn’t have the crews of the aurora and the degasi known about the mercury 2?
You should do the mercury 2 next idk the story behind that
