Outcome: She died and caused tons of damage to Alterra for practically no reason.
marguerit is honestly one of my favourite game characters ever. i love her lore, i love her design, i love her morals and motives. such a clever concept
Not just plot armour: she's a clear case of "writer's favourite" syndrome. She isn't part of the setting, like all the characters who are bound by the laws of physics. She can do anything the writers think would make her sound cooler, logic be damned.
She's a strong, skilled, logical character. She killed a reaper that was already well past it's environmental safe zone, likely getting injured along the way. She then used the reaper like a raft while eating the reaper. Reapers eat things that eat peepers so it's logical that the inhibiting agent from the peepers is in the reaper, holding the disease at bay. It's improbable sure, but not impossible. Not saying she should have been in Below Zero, or it makes sense why she would stay there, but "plot armor" isn't quite right. There is a reasonable explanation for her being alive. For some recent examples, plot armor is when Ahsoka doesn't get exploded by assassin droid's nuclear bombs because they fight her hand to hand first and even have bomb timers that are long enough for her to outrun the blast. Or when Echo isn't killed by a hit squad because they put away the machine guns and explosives to fight her hand to hand. They could set fire to whatever building she's in at all entrances and exits, but nope. Fist fight. People have survived worse situations than the one she found herself in. The only real contrivance is her conveniently being at the location of another Altera facility which happened to be where a living architect is, which happens to be where a leviathan with preserved kahraa is. So, Plot Armor? No. Contrived writing? Yes.
Its wierd to think that Margaret saw the 2 blasts that shot down the Aurora and the one blast that shot down the Sunbeam. Also, its odd that she never mentions them, the sickness, or her former companions in below zero.
well, there wasn't much reason for her to mention them in below zero. she was only really asked about sam, and wasn't about to just volunteer her whole life story for no reason
Honestly, the void of Subnautica is such an idea to me. I don’t know why, but the emptiness and at the same time absolute terror that fills it, causes me so much discomfort. But when you hear Margerit crossed it riding the carcass of a dead reaper leviathan you make it sound like absolutely nothing.
To all the people talking about how unrealistic the shit she did was, remember that if youre good enough you can kill any fish in the game with just a knife and a seaglide. If she had plot armor, than riley has a plot fort.
@@el_perro2436 ryley only survived because he got the cure from the emperor leviathan babies. What’s the cannon time that he spent on the planet before finding the cure? As far as I know Marguerit couldn’t have gotten the cure until the second wave of alterra shows up
If I recall, that guy was heavily for gun control, stating that not allowing firearms served a dual purpose: making the game more tense by removing effective means of self defense, and showing that firearms are not always the answer to a problem. Unfortunately for him, they made a character that not only loved hunting monsters, but also loved making explosives. I'm sure Maida would've killed the entire planet, if she had only a pistol and a bullet bench. A mirror to a lot of players out there, especially the ones who used crash fish as living artillery in their PRAWN suit cannons.

I mean when you really look at it, a specialist technician like Riley was probably one of the very few people capable of surviving given his technical experience, pretty similar to Bart Torgal Whereas someone like Marguerite is just so good at killing that she doesn't really need much else
In the first game, some audio logs from the Degasi mention that Marguerite is a veteran mercenary in space missions, so she likely had plenty of experience dealing with creatures. If you explore well, you can find a fragment of the Degasi hidden in the Safe Shallows, which means that’s probably where the three survivors started. And while Riley may have experience with machinery, you can't deny he was the luckiest of them all to also land there, since the others ended up more than 200 meters deep, surrounded by sharks or leviathans, or worst of all, falling into the void.
@@imyellowteeth4691 she had decades of experience in the military and was fighting for her life its not like she got out unscathed but she had a big chunk of debris and knew its anatomy from the ones she had cut open earlier so she knew where to stab to instantly kill it

But she didn’t so since the reaper doesn’t have arms it couldn’t really do anything.
I mean thats how she killed it because regardless if youre blind or not your brain is right behind your eyes so if you get stabbed in the eye you can die pretty easily
She probably didn't know that yet but thats not even why she would have stabbed it in the eye. The eye is a soft ball on the face that leads into the head and would likely allow her to stab it lethally
Are you sure they're blind? I don't remember that ever being mentioned anywhere. I know they use echolocation, but that doesn't automatically mean they're blind. Bats don't use their eyes much for hunting or flying but they can still see 🤔
@@johankarlsson1776The eyes are completely black so probably not, it's pretty likely that they're just a vestigial adaptation that was carried through the generations accidentally, otherwise it wouldn't make a lot of sense for them to spend literally every waking moment screaming due to being such a large predator
Methinks that her survival is due to eating the reaper's tissues, none of the leviathan's other than juvenile reefbacks 42:12 seem vulnerable to it, so it's possible that the reaper contained something that could at least suppress Kharaa

I love how a Kharaa cure was created by some human it such a short amount of time. Not like it defangs the threat of the bacteria that the previous game established.
Yeah it's one thing for someone like Marguerite to naturally develop antibodies through ingesting inert bacteria, but Sam just straight up cured super-cancer with no fancy leviathan or magic-like technology, just an underpaid roboticist was able to completely dunk on a galaxy-wide precursor species
An old woman crash lands on an ailen ocean planet, argues with her crew constantly asking to venture farther and do more, she also contracts a deadly bacterium which killed hundreds of billions of precursors and sea creatures, injures a giant ocean monster, longer than the Statue of Liberty is tall and twice the length of earths biggest creature, then it’s mate comes and attacks margueriet, she clings to it and kills it with a piece of scrap metal, floats to the surface of the void, lives off of the floating reaper corpse for 3 weeks, living in its rib cage, eating its flesh, and living off of 3 liters of drinking water. She eventually arrives in a sub zero climate where she explores that in its entirely, builds a base there and then tames a damn snow stalker, and she lives there for like 12 years (I think) with the infection that should have killed her in just 10 days. Then other people come by to investigate what happened to the crew of the crashed ship, they spy on marguerite so she convinces one of them to blow up facilities and she blows up a facility herself, scaring off the inhabitants to where she lives happily ever after now.

she survived cuz of the cold, i assume she was late stage but the freezing temp slowed the infection to a snails pace or killed it outright, which would explain the extreme biodiversity of sector zero even tho its real far from the sea emperor
Unless she froze herself (which would kill her) the temperature difference doesn't make any difference. Her body temperature wouldn't change much, so an internal infection wouldn't be affected by lower outdoors temperatures 🤔 and considering the frozen leviathan has a still living infection, I don't think the temperature does anything 🤷♀️
@@johankarlsson1776 the later stages are on the skin, and bacterial infections are known to slow growth in colder temperatures, so I doubt it cured her but could have staved of the infection long enough for the cure to reach sector zero
@@evanoggs5863 realistically, knowing how human bodies work, no. Imagine if Her and Ryley's stories had swapped. You are floating in a reaper's corpse. She is saving the planet. She gets an escape. You are trapped on the planet, alone.
Unpopular opinion; Marguerit's ideals were the reason the Torgals died. They could still have survived if they'd built a new shelter in the shallows, rather than moving down into the Jellyshroom Caves. They'd already had indoor growbeds, and genetic material from the healthy sustainable wildlife beforehand, so they could have held out almost indefinitely. If only Marguerit would've listened to Paul Torgal, and stayed near the surface, Alterra would've likely found them, fulfilled their auxiliary mission once the protagonist of the first game escaped, returned them to the Mongolians, and the story of the Degassi would've been wrapped up with the events of the first game. I, personally, think this would've been a better outcome of the story, but, I understand that the developers were working within the bounds of their engine and programming.
she survived the vires because she just built different, straight up trained by amir type shit. she literally killed two reapers and floated on one's corpse for weeks. she is a unstoppable force
Ngl marguerite's plan for the frozen leviathan was kinda stupid like Sam should have just used the antidote and then blown up the cave to burry it just incase it didn't work
Marguerit Maida is what you get if Cave Johnson and Saxton Hale had a baby. Absolutely fucking insane with the "Life isn't about why, it's about why not" mentality of Cave and the "I am not stuck in here with you, you are stuck in here with ME" level of titanium ovaries that a female Hale would have.
I think it’s crazy she did the scouting for the degassi bases and picked the WORST locations in the game. I’m assuming that means wherever their ship crashed was off map from where the game takes place but the grassy plateau was right there and the safe shallows were only about a hundred meters or so away
Wait, so if she swim out past the ghost leviathan territory, that means to get in to the Ice Place, she swim through the void Chelicerates meaning she likely fought off multiple chilicerates
I can't remember where but it's implied somewhere that they sort of patrol the crater edge to eat anything that wanders out because they can't sustain many of them living within the crater, so in actual lore it's likely that the edge of the crater is a bunch of ghost leviathans eating each other and anything else, but it's likely that because of the bacteria most of the ocean is just dead
imagine a timeline where Marguerit and Ryley met each other on 4546b (maybe in some alternate timeline where Ryley wasn't able to build a neptune escape rocket and had to leave the crater for whatever reason)
There were a lot of things I didn't like about Below Zero, but Marguerit was not one of them. Its her game and we were just playing it. I love her so much, her mind is set on surviving and nothing will stop her, not even an alien planet with alien viruses and alien enemies. I would love if they made a spin off game about Marguerit.
no matter how cool she is, she cost lives and is the reason why below zero even has a plot, making her the closest thing to an antagonist. A cure stab into the beast would of been enough, closing it off may of just released the disease through the explosion and was just doen because she wanted to hurt people/the corporation. Sam also is a terrible character, meant to spy on the unknown, joins the unknown and plans to harm her co-workers (idc what you say, planting a bomb at your work is not measning no harm). She got what she deserved. Sorry Riley, she died incompetent as altera says. Stuff like this is why people dont like the second as much (as well as the gameplay choices). you can tell the game went through multiple re-writes, the alpha build was way better.

"Your authority stopped at sea level"
Damn
HELP YOU HAD THE EXACT SAME COMMENT AS ME
"Your authority stopped at sea level" is such a sick line.
considering she was able to kill a reaper with nothing but scrap i cannot fathom how dangerous she actually is while in that prawn suit. she could probably take out a sea dragon in a minute flat
have you ever tried to fight one, if so you know they DESTROY everything easily
In the early story of Below Zero she attacked a whole ass plane/vtol thing with that suit
If you consider how sharp scrap is sometimes it was probably a little bit easier
@@teme7354 yes that's the point he is saying that Margaret is really strong

-Arrives to 4546b.
-Has a job to surveil the territory with spyware.
-Finds escaped survivor who is definitely NOT okay in the head.
-Tries to find an "obscure" reason on why Alterra is researching the virus (there isn't exactly one).
-Starts becoming paranoid.
-Crazy survivor lady convinces her she has to do something.
-Commits terrorist attack and kills herself along with another innocent person.
Outcome: She died and caused tons of damage to Alterra for practically no reason.
are you insane?
Yeah it is really weird although I wouldn’t say margerit is crazy tho but from all the stuff Sam told her that seemed kinda logical
The whole point of the game is to prove that Sam didn’t die due to negligence, yet at the end you realize she DID in fact die due to negligence.

Marguerit maida is the definition of plot armor prove me wrong
Not just plot armour: she's a clear case of "writer's favourite" syndrome. She isn't part of the setting, like all the characters who are bound by the laws of physics. She can do anything the writers think would make her sound cooler, logic be damned.
@@DZ-X3 i just call her a living plot hole
Yes.
@@Nickle_King so basically she's a badass

A 40 minute video! Nice job BT, I now know a lot more about Marguerit than I ever expected to know.
Its wierd to think that Margaret saw the 2 blasts that shot down the Aurora and the one blast that shot down the Sunbeam. Also, its odd that she never mentions them, the sickness, or her former companions in below zero.
Safe to say, she doesn’t care or stopped caring
@@dreamiinotdream730 Margaret grabbed popcorn as she watched sunbeam get turned to space dust
well, there wasn't much reason for her to mention them in below zero. she was only really asked about sam, and wasn't about to just volunteer her whole life story for no reason
I’m more so concerned on how she survived the infection and also just in general how any of the stuff works in below zero without being a total retcon
Riley has a exo suit and stasis gun
Yea that's true 👍
@@RoozleDoozle-9210Riley also survived kharaa, and Marguerit might have a better immune system. From the whole, mercenary thing.
@@el_perro2436 ryley only survived because he got the cure from the emperor leviathan babies. What’s the cannon time that he spent on the planet before finding the cure? Probably way less time than Marguerit who never knew about the emperor leviathan and was also stranded there for longer before the aurora ever showed up. As far as I know Marguerit couldn’t have gotten the cure until the second wave of alterra shows up
Maida is the answer to that dev that was so obsessed with de-weaponizing, they made it part of Subnautica lore lol
Ok, 22k subscribers? Now that's VERY underrated for how amazing your videos are. Seriously, your videos feel like they are a documentary. You are amazing. Never stop making content.
Subnautica got some quality youtubers making content but they're all so underrated
I like how professional people can’t survive but we survive 😂
I mean when you really look at it, a specialist technician like Riley was probably one of the very few people capable of surviving given his technical experience, pretty similar to Bart Torgal
Whereas someone like Marguerite is just so good at killing that she doesn't really need much else
She’s inspired me to hunt reapers
Am I the only one who actually liked margret 😭she is a testament the the indomitable human spirit and will to survive

But she didn’t so since the reaper doesn’t have arms it couldn’t really do anything.
@@imyellowteeth4691I don't think you've played subnautica long enough if you think that
It's funny because reapers are actually blind so Maida didn't do much when stabbing it in the eye.
@@XXRandoMizedXX fair enough
Are you sure they're blind? I don't remember that ever being mentioned anywhere. I know they use echolocation, but that doesn't automatically mean they're blind. Bats don't use their eyes much for hunting or flying but they can still see 🤔
@@johankarlsson1776The eyes are completely black so probably not, it's pretty likely that they're just a vestigial adaptation that was carried through the generations accidentally, otherwise it wouldn't make a lot of sense for them to spend literally every waking moment screaming due to being such a large predator
amazing video goes into so much depth keep it up breathtaker!
Thanks! I will certainly try...
Methinks that her survival is due to eating the reaper's tissues, none of the leviathan's other than juvenile reefbacks 42:12 seem vulnerable to it, so it's possible that the reaper contained something that could at least suppress Kharaa
9:54 This cave is not a natural formation. Someone built it... which means it must lead somewhere.
This video is amazing! Please make more of all the different characters! Its so great to listen and watch. You explaining between is excellent! Like reading a good book
Man this was an incredible video !! Thanks so much for the deep dive man 😁❤️
An old woman crash lands on an ailen ocean planet, argues with her crew constantly asking to venture farther and do more, she also contracts a deadly bacterium which killed hundreds of billions of precursors and sea creatures, injures a giant ocean monster, longer than the Statue of Liberty is tall and twice the length of earths biggest creature, then it’s mate comes and attacks margueriet, she clings to it and kills it with a piece of scrap metal, floats to the surface of the void, lives off of the floating reaper corpse for 3 weeks, living in its rib cage, eating its flesh, and living off of 3 liters of drinking water.
This really puts into perspective how small the statue of Liberty is

@@Breathtaker5000 yeah 🔥
she survived cuz of the cold, i assume she was late stage but the freezing temp slowed the infection to a snails pace or killed it outright, which would explain the extreme biodiversity of sector zero even tho its real far from the sea emperor
And the cough meant internal infection, her body temp would of had to stay the same or she was kilering herself by freezing, even if lowering by a single degree inside. its just not logical unless she was immune which we know isnt the case.
Imagine if Her and Ryley's stories had swapped.
You are floating in a reaper's corpse.
She is saving the planet.
She gets an escape.
You are trapped on the planet, alone.
I would play that. If that means i get to ride a massive anti-leviathan prawn mech
Very good, composed and presented, thank you very much
Unpopular opinion; Marguerit's ideals were the reason the Torgals died.

With marguerit by their side, im surprised they didn't cure the planet before the aurora got there
Wait, so if she swim out past the ghost leviathan territory, that means to get in to the Ice Place, she swim through the void Chelicerates meaning she likely fought off multiple chilicerates

If you go far enough they dont spawn
I can't remember where but it's implied somewhere that they sort of patrol the crater edge to eat anything that wanders out because they can't sustain many of them living within the crater, so in actual lore it's likely that the edge of the crater is a bunch of ghost leviathans eating each other and anything else, but it's likely that because of the bacteria most of the ocean is just dead
13:12 the seamoth with the subscribe is funny

There were a lot of things I didn't like about Below Zero, but Marguerit was not one of them. Its her game and we were just playing it. I love her so much, her mind is set on surviving and nothing will stop her, not even an alien planet with alien viruses and alien enemies. I would love if they made a spin off game about Marguerit.
In planet 4546B, Marguerit Maida remains the top 1 Apex predator of the planet. Basically she owns everything inside that planet
We need a subnautica movie about her now

Gaslight gatekeep? No. Uh..

Gun down. Gut out. Girlboss?
no matter how cool she is, she cost lives and is the reason why below zero even has a plot, making her the closest thing to an antagonist.
I love Marguerit and I'm SO happy they put her in below zero
