Subnautica is a once in a lifetime experience. The first time playing subnautica is an absolute rollercoaster. However, I feel like that means future subnautica games won’t be able to capture the same feeling as the original (bz a perfect example).
Tbf the lack of signficant open waters and feeling of being alone in the sequel is what, at least for me, made it fall short of the original subnautica feel
@@wyldcat9396 It's as if the devs thought that they needed to make it less terrifying. Everything underwater has too much bioluminescence, and the night sky is lit up by auroras. The open waters and dark nights in the original were key features. It's a shame they dropped both of those for Below Zero. And along with a terrible storyline and main character of Below Zero, the on-land portions were dreadful. There are multiple ways to get into all the locations of Subnautica. Below Zero has exact paths you must take. I spent hours on that damn landmass just trying to figure out how to get to a location. I pray that they learned their lesson and don't set 1/3 of Subnautica 3 on land, and let the player be the main character instead of a written character.
I played this game for the first time recently, and I can confidently say that it still was an amazing experience even tho it was an older game. I still couldn’t believe how free and open the map was.
I believe it holds up. I'll admit the first time is THE experience of Subnautica, but it has great replayability. A passable building system, lore galore, and a whole crater to explore. It's fun, immersive to me, and genuinely a blast.
I didn't realize the habitat builder was a thing/available in 'early' game, so I just built dozens and dozens of underwater lockers- labeled and everything. And I just lived in the lifepod. When I realized it wasn't that difficult to build a base and I could easily get storage and an actual living space. Well. Lesson learned
It still is a gorgeous world, but the fear of the unknown deeps is something you only get to experience once. After several playthroughs I'd confidentially swim with just a seaglide and knife into reaper infested waters.

Subnautica is my second favourite game of all time I love exploring this beautiful ocean over and over again and going to the depths of the world to save this planet.
The one thing I found to be the greatest irritation to the game had to be the actual player inventory as well as the slot sizes that they assigned to items in it. Otherwise it's pretty good besides feeling like base building is much more limited than I'd like.
@@iAletho I think that was probably one of the contributing factors for its lesser well received release. Sure it was more Subnautica, but it was just that. More of the same but with a new paint job and some tweaks.
I liked that aspect. While clearly unrealistic, it brought a slight realism to the inventory system, a bit of micromanagement, but not enough to be repulsive, and a strategic element to what and how much you can bring and/or gather on your excursions. Which in turn adds to the fear/stress factor when encountering leviathans or other formidable enemies.
It's a brilliant game, resources for building don't require a lot of grinding, the sea creatures are fun once you get used to them. I've finished the game and never been fully attacked by anything. It doesn't hold your hand, but it's not a difficult game. And you can also get tips online if you get stuck.
Same here. I always head towards the red grass biome and make my base next to a Mushroom Cave entrance. Either that or in the lost river when I get there. Prime real estate
Bro my love for this game is something else That being said I'd like to say that some people aren't the pray for the leviathans but the other way around
No ability to fight back? Say hello to my Stasis rifle and HeatKnife. No rewards from killing leviathans? Main revard is always one less leviathan to worry about (Safety). pss: leviathans do not respawn.
I followed Subnautica from the development stage and it was fascinating watching it progress over the years until the final release. Though there’s still apart of me that wishes I would’ve gone in with no knowledge of the game at all, it would’ve been quite the experience.
i just got the game today after wanting it for YEARSSSS!!! i’m literally so excited i can’t wait to play it, and all these positive comments are making me even more excited omg
I just realized that all the other survivors that went to the rondavu point left you there and in some spots you would be close enough to one of the other life pods to were when the lifepods did float or when the crew went up for air they would have seen your life pod. And they just left you to cook in your pod. What a bunch of meanys
This game is one of the best and most unique of survivalcraft games I've played. Awesome setting, great score/sound design. The tinge of terror that comes with many enviroments is perfectly fitting for a stranded survivor on an alien planet. There's many moments of wonder at it's natural beauty, like the cove tree, the giant mushroom, etc. which again, is perfectly apt for the premise of the story. I felt like I explored the secrets of a wondrous and dangerous planet. There's a long list of minor misteps, technical issues, and in my opinion the aggressive fauna that are not leviathans aren't nearly dangerous enough, but the positives are tough to outweigh. 9/10 can't be missed if you like these kinds of games.
to be fair, i watched a lot about subnautica to where i already knew the leviathans and everything before i started playing. my first time seeing a reaper leviathan was still utterly terrifying, though.
As a space nerd i love how the moons look, and i have concluded that there are approximately 4 other planets (because of obviously brighter stars) and the possibility that subnautica 3 could maybe incluede that
Saw this video a few days ago but thought I’d leave my comment now after rewatching it. Subnautica is such a beautiful game, in that I wish I could replay it for the first time ever again so badly. And I recommend everybody to play this game atleast once, however. I’ve replayed the game about 4 times (this last month being my 4th time) and I must say, the game still brings the same excitement. Break it up between a year or two. It’s been two years since I played it, I’ve already beaten it right? But man replaying it this last month told me that this game has so much under the surface and always has so much mystery and lore surrounded by it that every time you play it it provides a new experience. I love Alterra and the “alien” species lore and would love more. I would love for a Subnautica 2 however as once mentioned “it’ll never be the same as the first.” Thanks for posting this video. Love your videos dude and keep rocking! Oh and you earned a sub
Developers did indeed reward players for killing a Leviathan... by not respawning them 😂 For me killing a Leviathan is worth just by the fact it makes the spot a lot safer to explore
Very nice video, hopefully the elements of Subnautica will be carried over to Subnautica 2. I didnt have much of the same experience with Below Zero but im sure that Subnautica 2 will be an excellent game with a wonderful story. Hope to see more content soon. :)
i agree, the loneliness, depth (actual ocean depth and story depth), and natural scariness just werent there in below zero. also the map was compared to the original, absolutely shit. if theres one thing they need to take from the original masterpiece to subnautica 2, its the loneliness
@@pinchylobster7392 I have to say yes BZ wasn't the same, I still enjoyed the game though, not as much as the original but it definitely wasn't bad, I was caught a little off guard with actual speaking characters like Marguerite and AL-AN. I can say that BZ was an experience, it wasn't the same but it's still enjoyable.
I still wish there was a cyclops docking bay in the official game and not depend on mods. At least a connecting hatch from your base to the sub would have been a good addition.
The fact that the players life pod is completely intact and is not damaged and floating systems are still working is very shocking as compared to all the lifeboats which had some damage or aur failure in their systems
Subnautica is still a very relevant game; despite its flaws; it still feels unique, and since it was handcrafted, unlike games like "Minecraft", it feels more interactive. Every plant, Critter or fish has been placed for a reason, and it gives life to the game. - It has what most games does not: Hints, yet not holding your hand; and allow you to play. naturally, you're drawn to the big ship, and at some point you push your limits. In honesty, It's my favorite survival game.
Subnautica remains one of my favourite games even though my anxiety couldn't allow me to complete it with some "help" from the console menu🙈 I love just swimming around and building bases. I did finish below zero without "help" but the first game just has a different feel you it.
Surprised no one has made a movie about this game yet, it would work so well because of the scenario being so realistic, the story being interesting and the current power of CGI. They also probably could profit quite well with merch, but I mean Unknown Worlds already kind of did that.
One thing you forgot to mention is that Riley gets a teeny tiny message by his PDA which tells him that everything he uses or builds is a property of Alterra Corporation and he'll be debt striken by the time he manages to escape.
I'm extremely excited for the third game. I do hope they expand on the variety of biomes from the first game. I bought Subnautica recently and i had a lot of fun playing it. The first few hours were very confusing and i had a hard time figuring out what to do and were to go - and scary big fish did a good job at keeping me away from certain areas. But with time i understood what to do and i grew bold enough to explore the more dangerous areas and it felt really fun. I have to say that there are not enough games out there that do a similar job at making exploration this fun and i hope that the third game delivers. I did play BZ and while i liked it, it didn't click in the same way as the first one, mainly because the map felt so small in comparison and while the lilypad islands and the tree spires were really fun to be in, the other areas didn't seem fun enough to actually stay there and build a base. (I did play BZ first)
When I went to 4546B, I was amazed of the beauty of the planet first step out of my life pod. I was surrounded by water and did not know what to do when I jumped in I was surrounded by beauty.
With how Below Zero was, it made me wonder if Subnautica was an accidental success. It felt like they had no clue what made the original so appealing to people.
I heard a podcast with the CEO of Unknown Worlds a few years ago and I think he alluded to there being very different opinions in the company when it comes to where to take BZ. He also didn't really work on BZ because he and a lot of the team were quite sick with Subnautica after working so hard and so long on the first one. So I think the people who made the first one great just didn't really have enough of a voice in making BZ.
The first encounter I had with those horrifying reapers, it came so swiftly, so quietly, I only knew he was there when he grabbed my sea moth roaring at me as I screamed back and closing game… I eventually went back and went as deep as the lava zone only
You very well can hunt in this game, with the right skills you can remove your restraint called fear via that empowering feeling earned by piloting a Prawn. With the Stasis Rifle and a Prawn, even Leviathans are light work.
I realize I’m late but I just bought this game after finally watching a 100 hours video of it. I’d heard of it obviously but I avoided it like a plague because I know certain huge UA-camr gamers were into it and a huge amount of people like that can make a games community a little iffy. But I finally watched it and I’m so glad I finally did. I was being cynical and would’ve missed a beautiful game. Even just watching the playthrough and seeing how the sunlight is dispersed in the first few meters of water… it’s just beautiful. My husband got me into Satisfactory and I thought this seemed similar but with ocean and a bit of a story. I feel so bad for being a cynical jerk and who knows how many games I’ve missed because of it. I’m just glad I can look forward to starting this game now. I don’t mind starting games years after they come out but I wish I hadn’t denied myself the experience because I was being an old salty fuddy dutty.

The base building is something I wish they expanded more in BZ, but they didn't add too much unfortunately!
Subnautica is one of the things that’s scared me from the ocean and personally I think it’s still one of the best games
Considering recent events you have a right to be scared

Your summary also qualifies as a pretty solid walkthru/hint guide. Thanks.
It's a brilliant game, resources for building don't require a lot of grinding, the sea creatures are fun once you get used to them. I've finished the game and never been fully attacked by anything. It doesn't hold your hand, but it's not a difficult game. And you can also get tips online if you get stuck.
I started this game yesterday and it is amazing i encounterd my first leviathan and it was pretty scary 10/10 game
Subnautica was one of the most amazing gaming experiences I ever had, especially because I'm terrified of the deep ocean.
I usually make the sea moth before my base so that I can go further from the lifepod.
Same here. I always head towards the red grass biome and make my base next to a Mushroom Cave entrance.
Either that or in the lost river when I get there. Prime real estate
Bro my love for this game is something else
That being said I'd like to say that some people aren't the pray for the leviathans but the other way around
Subnautica is my favorite game, and this video captures everything that is great about it. Well done!
@@Sonic_K thanks Sonic!
The first playthrough of any game is always a lot better than the rest but honestly I still love to go around and explore the ocean
i just got the game today after wanting it for YEARSSSS!!! i’m literally so excited i can’t wait to play it, and all these positive comments are making me even more excited omg
I have played this over 20 times and love it every time I play it. The greatest game ever in my opinion.
Aletho back with another Epic video
I just realized that all the other survivors that went to the rondavu point left you there and in some spots you would be close enough to one of the other life pods to were when the lifepods did float or when the crew went up for air they would have seen your life pod. And they just left you to cook in your pod. What a bunch of meanys
They all died before you woke up. So they had
I remember Subnautica's long loading times. Its a game that taught me patients for a good game.
to be fair, i watched a lot about subnautica to where i already knew the leviathans and everything before i started playing. my first time seeing a reaper leviathan was still utterly terrifying, though.
WAIT 5 YEARS JESUS
every once in a while a game comes out that blows you away this is one of them games play it blind and enjoy figuring it out.
Just replayed it with my 8 year old and finally beat it. It was great! Can't wait for the new one.
I would love for a Subnautica 2 however as once mentioned “it’ll never be the same as the first.”
Thanks for posting this video. Love your videos dude and keep rocking!
Oh and you earned a sub
Developers did indeed reward players for killing a Leviathan... by not respawning them 😂 For me killing a Leviathan is worth just by the fact it makes the spot a lot safer to explore
I'm just glad that the switch has the most complete version committed to a physical media. It adds to whole of game preservation.
Very nice video, hopefully the elements of Subnautica will be carried over to Subnautica 2. I didnt have much of the same experience with Below Zero but im sure that Subnautica 2 will be an excellent game with a wonderful story. Hope to see more content soon.

i agree, the loneliness, depth (actual ocean depth and story depth), and natural scariness just werent there in below zero. also the map was compared to the original, absolutely shit. if theres one thing they need to take from the original masterpiece to subnautica 2, its the loneliness
Thanks Nordic! I agree, I wasn't much a fan of BZ, but hopefully Subnautica 2 will take more influences from the original!
@@nordic_estonia Yes it would be a great game if the original subnautica didn’t set the bar so high

Says "spin". Knife spins. Well done!
@@iAletho made me happy seeing that level of detail!
I still wish there was a cyclops docking bay in the official game and not depend on mods.
At least a connecting hatch from your base to the sub would have been a good addition.
I really hope the sequel of Subnautica would do the same, as Totk did do to Botw.
yeah, rather than what we got with below zero lmao
@@heretichazelSubnautica: Below Average
The fact that the players life pod is completely intact and is not damaged and floating systems are still working is very shocking as compared to all the lifeboats which had some damage or aur failure in their systems
I’ve always loved the ocean and video games so I love subnautica
The sad part is that Ryley is screwed whether he’s on the planet or manages to escape. Truly an unfortunate man.
There’s actually a very specific ending that is “good” but it’s kind of hidden :)
Well, Finished subnautica two months ago and I have not played game with such a joy and exitement for a long time.
NO WAY its been five whole years! The lockdown really did mess up my peception of time. Feels like yesterday was 2018
Subnautica remains one of my favourite games even though my anxiety couldn't allow me to complete it with some "help" from the console menu🙈
I love just swimming around and building bases.
I did finish below zero without "help" but the first game just has a different feel you it.
I played both Subnautica games on both PlayStation 4 & 5 and enjoyed the hell out of them both again! I can't wait for the third!!
Surprised no one has made a movie about this game yet, it would work so well because of the scenario being so realistic, the story being interesting and the current power of CGI. They also probably could profit quite well with merch, but I mean Unknown Worlds already kind of did that.
Somebody did a few fanmade shorts that are live action about Subnautica like a mini movie
this is the best wiki reading i’ve ever seen!
Up to today the best survival game i've ever played
(I did play BZ first)
started playin this game for the first time recently n i thinks it does hold up really well
Unknown Worlds: "No weapons. The player needs to remain vulnerable."
me: uses the drill on the prawn suit
This game is the reason I'm terrified of the ocean
When I went to 4546B, I was amazed of the beauty of the planet first step out of my life pod. I was surrounded by water and did not know what to do when I jumped in I was surrounded by beauty.
I got this game when it was one of the free games of the month on PlayStation. I've played the hell out of it! Several times, in fact.
A couple days ago I actually finally found courage to beat the game after 5 years I hardly fear anything now
With how Below Zero was, it made me wonder if Subnautica was an accidental success.
I used to play without a right click, so I didn’t even have the possibility to build, or use the habitat builder
Bit late but welcome to this amazing, enthralling channel!!
F’s in chat for those poor souls who ended up in the dead zone and reaper zones
I've never played an underwater game so not even sure what made me buy Subnautica. Maybe it was the 97% Overwhelmingly Positive reviews on Steam, I don't know. What I do know is that this game sucked me in like a black hole. Subnautica will always have a special place in my heart and ranks in my top 10 favorite all time games. It's one of those games that made me feel depressed that it was over
Imagine if subnautica had decompression sickness
I did not know you could improve your diving lung. So I used an air pump and piping to get deeper. It was extremely difficult and scary to do this.
Aletho showed me Subnautica! It is still one of the greatest games in the World!
Started it in VR, but thinking about exiting and doing it on-screen. If I stay in VR this could take years.
if it makes you feel better, i had to uninstall because i was pissing my pants every time i booted it up. I was playing on PC lol
Subnautica is my favorite original IP game going back decades.
i admit i may have screwed myself over by spoiling the entire story for myself way before i played it, but i still love subnautica. i'm like .1% through the story at this point. i've been running around too scared to go much further, but with time i'll improve. i can't wait to finish the game someday.
What funny is that back in 2020 when I thought about playin subnautica (because last time i played it was in 2018) i was thinking to wait till it's gonna be 5 years and here we are now. Already +10 hours on save in just 2 days and much more stuff completed then back in 2018, I missed this game af
