I play a lot of blues, and seldom use the open strings, so I intonate all but acoustic guitars with a capo on the first fret, and then do regular tuning at the 12th fret. This way, tuning and intonation have the variance from the fretting raised pitch taken out. Try it, it really works.
Edit: forgot to mention, this works best when the nut slots are cut correctly, and I've found that at least 80% of all new guitars have nut slots that are too high.

Using a capo on the 5th fret would lessen the effect of an improperly cut nut.
In Standard 440 tuning. I find that tuning the G string on an electric guitar a few cents flat works well.

I have the older generation of this tuner and I also have the Peterson SC-HD Stroboclip HD Tuner. Great tuners, but one thing that bothers me is the fact that they didn't think to add a feature that shows us exactly by how many cents the tuning is off. This is a feature that is present in the software tuner that comes in Garage Band, on Mac. Nevertheless, it is in fact a great tuner and I use it (both of them) every day.
They are going for a true mechanical strobe simulation here. Real strobes have no "reading" of how far off the tuning is but instead the speed of the wheel is equal to the difference in the fretted note compared to the true note that it is checking against. But there is sort of a DIY ability to check the actual value in cents but it takes a small amount of effort. If you want to measure how far out a note is on an instrument you can use the manual offset function that is adjustable to a tenth of 1 cent which they claim is the same accuracy of a true mechanical strobe. You can either play the note or record it on a looper or DAW and then turn the manual offset until the wheel stops perfectly still, that will tell you exactly how far out it is. I've even used the built in tone generator to test other cheap tuners and this manual offset will tell you exactly how bad that tuner is in accuracy. I hope this helps someone. These really are the best tuners money can buy other than a true mechanical strobe.

Thanks for the review those petersons are accurate, a plus so if one is bored, you can spend hours playing around with the sweet tuning variants. This would be fun to test with multiscale / fanned fretboard guitars or basses.
And also for non guitar instruments and chromatic bass and more than usual strings . . . even banjo or harp, or harmonica + other instruments can be turned ... so many sweet turning choices (outside of alternate turnings too) acu or james taylor tuning, there's elecric guitar sweet tunung for specific pick up position, there's acoustic tuning, tuning for specific chords, tuning so the g string doesn't sound janky, tuning for cowboy chord 5th fret or below optimization, tuning for mids, turning for BB king box, turning for above 12 fret to 15ths fret or turning for 15-24 frets . . . Tons of options and lots of fun stuff to play around with on guitar. There's even sweet tuning for specifc songs /compositions etc. Nashville sweet tuning (vs nashville tuning string type).
Crazy how perfection also is on the other end of the spectrum of not enjoyable. . . alot of complains about top 12 spotify / top 40 current music / hatred for "modern" music, can be attributed to excessively perfectly engineered music. Vocals with auto tune. Drum beats exacting to milisecond, synthetic intruments perfectly on beat. Efx to allow sustain or various ambient. Same "enjoyable" chord progressions. And then same music is played as covers by live music and people love it (and live music in general) . . .
Please keep in mind it is being tuned to 440hz AKA the devils frequency. It is not a natural frequency. This tuner goes down to 390 hz.

Dylan, do you have any experience with evertune bridges? I would imagine that they would mitigate the issue of pulling the string out of tune since the mechanism hold consistent tension on the string no matter what.
I've been keen to get my hands on one for years but now that I heard they're working on a tremolo version I'm going to wait for that to release to pull the trigger.
I’ve been using Peterson tuners for a long time. The GTR sweetener is fine for acoustic and electric. The ACU sweetener is just for acoustic, I prefer it for that, and also use it on a hollow body Gretsch on which I use a wound 3rd. Have you fiddled with that one?
Got into these when I had Feiten systems installed. There should be a bunch of Feiten sweeteners if this is like my Strobostomp HD: including bFE (electric), bFb (bass), bFA (electric), and more for 12-string, 7-string, etc.

Would the sweetened tunings sound more out of tune when accompanying say a keyboard?

I just ordered this, was looking at the strobo stomp pedal version, but then saw this had the metronome and decided this will be better, even if I do want something for live. If this isn’t suitable for live, then I still have a clip on strobe tuner.

Right, this! That’s why some studio engineers tweak the tuning given how hard to player hits the strings. I know Jack Endino does this with the heavy rock bands he records. But then there’s the larger issue that equal temperament is radically out of tune (the major third is 14 cents sharp!). That’s a bigger deal than ~1 cent from various issues described here. Anyhow yeah, many reasons why a guitar can never be in tune.
My 73 Gibson SG standard would never stay in tune for more than one or two songs. When it was in tune it played and sounded great. Just not for very long. Drove me crazy. It now spends its life hanging on the wall. My 70 Les Paul standard and my 83 Les Paul custom will last a few songs longer on average. My 91 strat with trem is also problematic. The only classic guitar that never drifts out of tune is my 65 telecaster hard tail. I’ve gone days without having to retune it. My latest buy is a Sire 335 clone and that thing is also rock solid. I have 3 different Harley Benton’s that pretty much stay in tune. Hard tails are better for staying in tune.
If the guitar has a Buzz Feiten nutt and then you use the Buzz Feiten tuning is it compensating twice or did the Peterson guys make that one specifically for the nutt? Is sounded a little over compensated. Seemed like you heard it too from your facial expression. I try not to judge too much over UA-cam.

I have to admit, I had this tuner and I thought it jumped around a lot so I sold it. I do need a good tuner for intonation so I do question if I should pick one up again, but I don't know. I don't want to buy Peterson because of the name. I just need a tuner that can do intonation, but it has to be spot on.
When recording I tune to the chords of the song . So if you in A min at the 5th fret tune there.
Ive been using the strobostomp for a while. the only thing its missing is a mic for acoustics. i wonder if Peterson sells a plug in mic that would work for acoustics.
Any dynamic mic will work…you just need a matching transformer…to match the low impedance of the mic to the high impedance of the tuner input…. ( XLR female to 1/4” male)
Great video on a very interesting and neglected subject.
The following ramble is just to get things off my chest.
I can usually get fair to decent tuning on most electrics and steel string acoustics - with time and sufficient tweaking. However, on every nylon string guitar I've ever tried, tuning can be utterly frustrating and absurdly time-consuming, as well as being almost impossible. The third string in particular, almost always sounds sharp, the second string either sharp or flat and the rest aren't much better. Changes of key/sudden use of open strings, moving to higher positions and such, can jar horribly - even when the rest of the piece has been ok. The slightest deviation from using one chord or family of chords and the whole instrument can suddenly just sound sharp, flat or just 'out'. I've even detected traces of this on top quality concert instruments [I'll never own one, I mean the ones as played by Williams/Bream etc].
I tend to play for an hour in the mornings [since I retired] and at least the first 30-40 minutes is spent playing pieces, but re-tuning constantly throughout, until I feel like I've got some sort of equal temperament happening. The last few minutes of the session can then be exhilarating, as everything seems to have settled into a useable, tempered tuning and my multitudinous tweaking has sort of worked, temporarily. This never lasts, and any subsequent practice session will involve exactly the same process.
I've been playing for 51 years and the situation doesn't improve, though it's never put me off playing. Dedication I suppose.

I play with a guy who plays steel guitar and he’s always talking about sweetened tuning for steel. You can tell a big difference using a sweetened tuning on that.
10/23/2021: I have an off-subject question. I have been wondering if I purchased an H-H setup with a 3-way switch, could I split both humbuckers and get a quacky twangy country sound in the middle position of the selector switch? You know, just like a Telecaster can do.

Fgn claims their frets are fractionally asymmetrical in order to create a more perfect scale. I have not tried any of their guitars but they are one of the builders i have considered if i ever raise the cash for an sg stule guitar

I haven't watched the whole video yet, but I have a number of questions about sweetened tunings. I'm a guitar repair tech and have an older version of that Peterson tuner with sweetened tuning features.
How does a sweetened tuning affect playing with other instruments that are not sweetened? I assume they are slightly out of tune with each other.
Say I intonate a guitar using sweetened tuning, give it back to a customer. They tune with a non-sweetened tuner... Again, not quite in tune when fretting some notes, right?
How do the sweetened tuning settings affect alternate tunings? Both dropped standard tunings (like say DGCFAD) and tunings like DADGAD?
Every note denotes temperament approximation ie the WELL TEMPERED CLAVIER meaning that any fretted note is an approximation of a note except the open strings. That is why we try to intonate guitars

Petersons are true strobe and they are fantastic. Look on any good guitar tech bench and you will see them.

I should’ve just said this straight up in my first comment: it made me think about this because Rhett Shull just posted a vid on sweetened tunings last week. Now maybe in this case, Dylan didn’t know that, but it’s not unreasonable or out of the question to wonder if there was any connection behind it. Either way is fine. In this case they were both probably just tapping into the same collective conscience, they were simply both on the same topic around the same time. It’s happens a fair amount though. Sometimes planned perhaps, other times someone might start a topic and others continue with it, other times it’s just subconscious or “coincidence.” And of course sometimes it’s because of a product like when almost every GuitarTube posted their acoustasonic demo within a few days of each other when those were released, lol.

The Buss F system on your guitar must not be correctly done. Otherwise, the standard GTR setting would sound correct. You shouldn't need to 'sweeten' the sweetened guitar.
Your explanation of why the guitar is problematic is a bit off track. A 'correctly' intonated guitar will always have the octave and the open string in tune. The basis of the problem is that the guitar is designed as an equal tempered instrument which basically means an instrument is equally out of tune between all notes in all keys. Equally out of tune with what? If you play the major third on the high e string (g# on 4th fret) and then play the harmonic on that 4th fret, the two g# notes are different. In the natural world (bird song and human singing) and on wind instruments when you blow overtones, major thirds and perfect 5ths, in particular, are not mathematically equally spaced between the octaves. We hear this as 'in tune' . Tune your guitar with open strings. Play a d chord in first posy. The second fret f# ( the 3rd) always sounds sharp. Drop that open e a little and the d chord will sound in tune. Many equal temperant instruments (like the piano) are close enough that we dont notice that the 3rds and 5ths of all keys are out of tune. Because guitar strings have more tension on the lowest frets, we stretch many notes past the 'close enough' point. This is what a compensated nut is designed to fix. I.e. to counter the stretching in the first couple of frets and get the guitar back to equal temperement and equally out of tune everywhere.

Also, UA-cam makes it almost impossible to play music because of copyright issues. We do use a service for background music and etc that allows us to pay royalties and use their music.
It doesn't matter if your strings are accurate to the millionth decimal place of a single hertz; the cruel reality is, the mathematics of music does not comply. Scholars have battled the very same problem for centuries. Temperament, Intonation systems, et al. Realise, the only perfect harmony is a void, and beauty is what emerges from the chaos of dissonance.
