Having a discussion with a cop is like playing chess with a pigeon. They knock over all the pieces, shit on the board and then strut around like they’ve won.

The inspector's opening remarks, and his recollection of his opening remarks, diverged greatly in a few short minutes. How many times have police officers made similar mistakes, then written up notes after an incident, and later read them out in court under oath? This shows why every interaction with the police should be recorded and our right to film them should never be taken away.

this is why every copper must be wearing a recording device thats switched on the moment hes on duty to the time hes off duty. with no mute buttons or on/off buttons

They are corrupt full stop, as you say , he couldn't remember or he lied his way through the conversation because he knew he was wrong , so how does he write it up, it will be all about how he found a potential terrorist hiding and crouching , and if it wasn't for cameras that's how it would be seen, utter corruption from the top to the bottom

This is a perfect example of why police statements are unreliable evidence, and why video evidence is essential. This inspector had an image in his mind that was totally different to his actions. He didn't open a friendly line of communication, he was aggressive and attempted to incriminate ABs actions. He stated he was 'very confident' in what he said, but he was 100% wrong. The police should use this video in their training as an example of how not to approach the public.

I am not sure he actually meant to lie ... I agree he most certainly did lie but I think his adrenaline was probably flowing a bit and when AB pointed out that the words he was choosing to use to describe what he was doing ie: Loitering .. Hiding ...Crouching ... instead of the use of the word ' Standing ' and he clearly did not ask him why in the initial contact but I think it was because AB was so articulate in his word-smithing getting the officer to second guess what he said when he approached that the officer simply did not know what TO say or what HE did say.. but I don't think he intentionally fell over his words although he did for sure. All I am saying is I don't think the officer was really trying to HEM up our AB on some trumped up 'charges' by lying about AB's standing taking pictures instead of Loitering Hiding or Crouching. Not a boot licker .. it just seemed like he honestly did not know how to properly converse with AB initially.

The problem, Inspector, was that you were clearly using words like "hiding" and "crouching" to build grounds, and you were trying to build those grounds with things which didn't happen. You treated him like a suspect without reasonable suspicion. If you want productive voluntary contact with a member of the public who is not committing any offenses, be mindful of the fact that they are likely to be more forthcoming if you don't treat them like a criminal and worse, mischaracterise their actions.

Wouldn't it be nice if every officer approaching a member of the public would start with, "Good afternoon, sir/ma'am/miss. I'm PC Robertson with the Cheltenham Station. We noticed you taking photographs outside our police parking area. May I ask why ..." In short: salutation/ identification including name, rank, and station/why you're making contact or inquiry. This would reduce citizen fear and/or antagonism and more likely lead to a non-confrontational conversation. This officer did not do any of this, and very few do.
