It's so fitting that Justin Wong was one of the announcers commentating on this match. On his channel, Justin has an entire video about a tournament set where his Chun Li gets schooled by Hayao's Hugo. Justin isn't playing poorly, Hayao is just that much better. In fact, when Chun Li attempts a wake-up EX Spinning Bird Kick, Hugo uses the same standing FK drop kick knowing it would have priority. Hayao read it like a book. 🤯

It's actually even more difficult than you explained. Air tatsu hits at unpredictable timings and can hit an unpredictable amount of times depending on when it is used. And it comes out SO fast you can't just react. Hayao had to be SO ready for every precise detail in order to parry the full thing, but also be ready to get the punish on landing. If he tried to parry one more hit that wasn't actually there, he wouldn't have gotten the punish. And THEN he used dropkick in the sickest way possible. Such a great player.

That's not "possible", that's "virtually guaranteed". Things that are unpredictable for new players are memorized for people with 10,000 hours in the game.
@@SuperLemonfish Parrying Chun's super is way harder than this, i could see how this looks harder, because on paper it is, but air parries aren't that difficult considering you can buffer one when you jump and you do have time to react to the first parry, and is not really that hard to gauge the amount of hits based on height, 100 hours will let you do this, basically any middle C and upper rank in Fightcade could pull an EX Tatsu air parry. The really big brain stuff comes from knowing you could punish the landing (Sometimes you can't do that because if you end up the parries at a weird angle your opponent ends up on the ground faster than you) and using s.HK, worthless move but lets you punish wake up super with EX Lariat. Don't get me wrong, parries were hype but a lot of folks tend to think they are a technical miracle when players just go by feel, you just can't react to most buttons/specials with parry. People think a lot of parries are really hard when most of them follow the principle of buffering one when you are near your opponent, if you go to training mode and press both Forward and a button, most of the time you will parry that move, after a certain level you see a lot of players doing exactly this thing, fishing for "safe" parries, mindgames at that level come from buttons delays/timing changes. Getting to be so close to the stage for this moment was insane. I had honestly had such a torrid weekend up to that point, but in that one single moment not one bit of it mattered. Pure, unadulterated, HYPE.
Some of our team was here for this moment in person - and your recap is almost better than the real thing. Awesome video. And captures that moment perfectly!
This EVO Moment #38 happened RIGHT on the year of EVO Moment #37, 20 years after the moment that made fighting game history. It's insane that White Gi Ken the underdog that overcame the odds now become the Top tier wall that Hugo bust down with his dropkick. 3rd Strike is a one of a kind game, i wouldn't be surprise if 20 years from now EVO would run 3rd strike again and we would get our EVO Moment #39 where in Hugo would get parried by Q with 1 HP and do some wild ass punish. Just like Infinite said, we'll always be trapped in the new world of Street Fighter 3.
I stopped playing since SF Turbo II b/c I simply couldn't keep up with all the evolving game mechanics... this video got me excited like the good old days. Excellent story-telling and editing. Great job!
The breakdown of why exactly Hugo’s drop kick is considered useless really helped me appreciate it that much more. This year’s Evo was such a treat as a viewer with so many special matches & moments. Great to see more & more people are watching this absolutely incredible moment.
For a play to be considered an Evo moment I think it has to share 2 qualities. #1 It has to show an incredible technical feat and knowledge of the game. #2 The most important, it has to have a profound impact on the community and encapsulate the spirit of the FGC. This moment is just that! EVO moment #38
1:33 this statement alone always burns me. (Hypothetically) 30 characters release in a game and the masses that play to win stick to 5 of 30. From that movement alone comes SHEEP MENTALITY. So now everyone is led to believe ONLY these characters are good. ONLY they have the best moves. So on and so on. Then something like this happens and the world is on its head. PLAY WHO YOU WANT. LEARN WHO YOU PLAY. HAVE FUN. The "tier list" is subjective. Play for yourself
My friends who don't play fighting games not only watched this, but shared it in our friend group. Hayao, and this moment, are ambassadors for the genre, and this video is great at breaking it down. Great job.
"Evo Moment 37" is just a thing the guy who uploaded it to evo's youtube made up. The community is choosing to call this evo moment 38, and it would be cool if Evo also did that, but dont get it in your head that "Evo moments" are some kind of actual series that exists.
This is what keeps me hopeful they will continue releasing things like Online Edition for this game on modern systems. Seems like something captivating happens at least once whenever 3rd Strike is on the stage. As long as moments like this are possible, I don't think this game will ever die. For a lot of people, this set from Hayao is the highlight OF THE ENTIRE FINALS SUNDAY this year and he didn't even win the tournament. As broken as this game is, we love it. If they don't release editions for modern systems, I hope they revisit the 3rd Strike formula in the future and maybe make a new game around the system mechanics. It's already been 13 years since Online Edition released for PS3/X360, I really hope they don't wait too long. I was 23 when this edition came out, I hope I'm still breathing when they decide to redo this game in some fashion as those consoles are no longer being supported.
>magic pixel >Daigo Parry >insane tech dodge >Punish into winning the set >Has been rizzing the entire stadium the entire set, hyping them up for him >rewards the audience with a spectacular win ass-pulled fresh out for a live audience and on stream. This is what we call Peak Gaming Culture.
I don't play fighting games serious at all...but what an amazing moment, and he must have felt like an absolute star in that moment. Good for him, whatta legend
Hayao's extensive knowledge of Hugo cannot to expressed in mere words. Justin Wong himself did a FT5 match with him, and was swept. In fact, he was KO'd in one round by the very same dropkick that dodged Ken's wake up super. He also Half-Daigo parried Chun-Li's super, countering midway through with a command grab to KO her. He's legit.
So he won against the best players in the world, with the WORST character, vs his counter, and finished it with "The most useless trick, ever". If that isn't an Evo-Moment I don't know what is..
2:15 fun fact: this is an anti air parry which has a shorter window. Instead of 10f, it's around 5-6f (forgot the exact number), making this even harder
This set is the greatest example of what made old school fighting game design so enduring. Where newer games almost entirely rely on universal system mechanics to create scenarios, older games placed a bit more emphasis on unique character traits and tools In SF6, Hugo's drop kick probably wouldn't go over Kens super like that, and I think thats what makes this moment so great. Hayao had the character and situational knowledge to pull of a series of plays like that, pulling one over not only on his opponent, but the audience AND legends alike That is the stuff that makes fighting games beautiful
Common footage of Hayao actually happy.

Something so magical about Justin Wong commentating this match and freaking out when Hayao was parrying the ex tatsu. Like his ptsd resurfacing 5:38
Hmm i thought the same
God I’m so happy I got to see this live man the hype in the arena every time this dude got a grab was fuckin crazy
Thanks for the technical breakdown! Great job explaining just how unique this moment was
The editing and explanations are top notch. Im not a SF3 player and loved how in depth you got and it was easy to understand, and i got so hyped.
EVO 37 has always been an inspirational clip. I thought nothing could top it. It still hasnt due to its legacy.
Thank you for this video. It has opened my eyes to the such jaw dropping talent. You broke it down in a following pace. I will watch this match for years to come.
And just like moment 37, no one's talking about the Grand Finals. At least not right now.
CONGRATZ to MOV to winning the tourney!
i don't even know who was against who in the final... this is moment 38 indeed.
After Hayaos matches i just cant watch regular ass third strike chun yun ken lol
Well imo it takes much more skill to use a low tier character to beat a top tier character
Exactly why it's a certified EVO moment.
No one's going to remember GF's of 2024 in five years, but they will remember that Hayao shocked the world.
Grand finals was actually a great set
Getting to be so close to the stage for this moment was insane. I had honestly had such a torrid weekend up to that point, but in that one single moment not one bit of it mattered. Pure, unadulterated, HYPE.
Some of our team was here for this moment in person - and your recap is almost better than the real thing. Awesome video. And captures that moment perfectly!
7:51 worthless, but turned into a miracle
You really did this moment justice.
You can't tell me this wasn't the most exciting video u've seen all day. This was awesome
Great video.
You explained to a relative noob like me how this moment was incredible.
Beautifully explained. Your channel has criminally low views for the work you put in to this.
I love seeing this kind of stuff. That's how you put on a show for your audience. Amazing. So glad to be a part of the fgc ❤
Man, even 8 years after I played Undertale, Hopes and Dreams/SAVE the World still brings me to tears. Great vid, and great choice of ending music.
This video is as incredible as the thing itself, great job!
Do more of these!!! This was awesome!
Yes, this is worthy of being called "EVO Moment #38".
I stopped playing since SF Turbo II b/c I simply couldn't keep up with all the evolving game mechanics... this video got me excited like the good old days. Excellent story-telling and editing. Great job!
I still can't believe I witness this live from Max's stream. The legendary tatsu parry after EVO 37
Great video, thanks for showing me that. What a legend in that freeze frame ending
20 years later to 2004 to 2024 another EVO moment this is crazy!!!
Was waiting for this type of breakdown analysis. Thanks for the video!
BEAUTIFUL video.
Great analysis! I really enjoyed it.
The breakdown of why exactly Hugo’s drop kick is considered useless really helped me appreciate it that much more.
This year’s Evo was such a treat as a viewer with so many special matches & moments.
Great to see more & more people are watching this absolutely incredible moment.
Excellent video, narrative, and analysis! Thanks!! Loved watching this live too but didn’t understand the importance of the HK
For a play to be considered an Evo moment I think it has to share 2 qualities. #1 It has to show an incredible technical feat and knowledge of the game. #2 The most important, it has to have a profound impact on the community and encapsulate the spirit of the FGC. This moment is just that! EVO moment #38
Fun retelling and explanation of this Street Fighter III 3rd Strike moment and why it was really cool! I was very glad to have caught it live too! :D
Great job.
Do we have an official (or unofficial) Evo number for this moment yet?
it's Evo Moment 38 right?
38
"Evo Moment 37" is just a thing the guy who uploaded it to evo's youtube made up. The community is choosing to call this evo moment 38, and it would be cool if Evo also did that, but dont get it in your head that "Evo moments" are some kind of actual series that exists.
When he split, chat was calling it evo moment 69. 😂
720
Damn, thanks for sharing that. Definitely a fire moment for sure, brilliance at play!
For real this was the highlight of this year's Evo.
Edit : btw great narration and editing!
>magic pixel
>Daigo Parry
>insane tech dodge
>Punish into winning the set
>Has been rizzing the entire stadium the entire set, hyping them up for him
>rewards the audience with a spectacular win ass-pulled fresh out for a live audience and on stream.
This is what we call Peak Gaming Culture.
Great analysis, recap, and to me this is the new Evo moment. What an amazing match!
bro got them to rush the stage what a legend
I don't play fighting games serious at all...but what an amazing moment, and he must have felt like an absolute star in that moment. Good for him, whatta legend
I've seen someone someone call this evo moment 38. They're not wrong.
What a guy. The celebration with the crowd made me genuinely happy. Definetely will seek to watch more stuff with him
Hayao's extensive knowledge of Hugo cannot to expressed in mere words. Justin Wong himself did a FT5 match with him, and was swept. In fact, he was KO'd in one round by the very same dropkick that dodged Ken's wake up super.
He also Half-Daigo parried Chun-Li's super, countering midway through with a command grab to KO her. He's legit.
Amazing summary of events, thank you for the video! 🎉
Damn that yukari cosplayer is popping off wild
When in the video?
@@Zadamanim somewhere 7:49, at the audience
Im so happy to have watched this live. The crowd went insane
5:09 one sixth or one fourth of a second?
3S parry has a 10 frame window, so 1/6 of a second. The millisecond timer just stopped early, it should say 17 or 18 depending on rounding.
Great vid recapping this moment!
So he won against the best players in the world, with the WORST character, vs his counter, and finished it with "The most useless trick, ever".
If that isn't an Evo-Moment I don't know what is..
super cool story and video explaining everything !
2:15 fun fact: this is an anti air parry which has a shorter window. Instead of 10f, it's around 5-6f (forgot the exact number), making this even harder
He says it in the video
@@Zadamanim he doesn't. He says it's a 10f window.
This set is the greatest example of what made old school fighting game design so enduring. Where newer games almost entirely rely on universal system mechanics to create scenarios, older games placed a bit more emphasis on unique character traits and tools
In SF6, Hugo's drop kick probably wouldn't go over Kens super like that, and I think thats what makes this moment so great. Hayao had the character and situational knowledge to pull of a series of plays like that, pulling one over not only on his opponent, but the audience AND legends alike
That is the stuff that makes fighting games beautiful
I was at work and practically screaming at my desk watching this live.
proof that low tiers are more interesting to watch than top 3
Word dude after hayao went down i didnt feel like watching regular ass third strike
your presentation was super entertaining !
Finally. Evo moment #38
