You just made a BIG sale for me! Thank you so much!! I was hired to do a business sign that had a picture of diamonds in the background and couldn't figure out how to do it with vinyl but knew I could with sub. It was SO hard trying to find how to put it on a sign. Thank you SERIOUSLY!!
That's pretty cool.I have been using the thermal laminate pouches to use sublimation for the vinyl .it's pretty vibrant as well. Thanks for the video always fun to learn something new😊
Thank you. I absolutely love the laminate for stickers. I actually came across this technique when I needed some custom decals for a tumbler (and my inkjet was on the fritz)
I know this video is several years old but I'm new to using vinyl. Your video is very good and straight to the point. My question is did you tape your design to the shiny or matt side? Next once it cooled and you peeled of the sub paper, what is next? Reading through the comments you mentioned you stuck the design on a mug. How did you do that? Is there another peel of some kind in order to stick the design on a hard surface?
Hello! Welcome to the community :) So, Oracal is adhesive vinyl. It comes in matte or glossy finish. In this case I used matte. The other side is the paper that you peel off. I just hand cut around the design, then peeled off the backing paper and adhered to a mug. It does not require heat.
i wish i could share my results in a picture. mine is like cloudy. i tried on clear 651. but I did not do medium/firm pressure. I think your video is the first that doesn't use cricuts crap for a press. I will have to test when i get home tonight!
Thanks for answer my trouble. I was worndering exactly how to make the sticker with the oracal sublimated with full color image. You give me the right idea. Thanks a lot for the video. God Bless🙏
Fantastic! I notice your username (auto Paint). If you plan on using outdoors -it will fade eventually. For stickers I either seal with a UV clear coat or layer a clear laminate over it BEFORE cutting. The seal the edges with polyacrylic to make it super weather resistant.
It did stick a little, but it easy came off. Since I made this video, 3 years ago, it has been stuck to one of my coffee mugs - that i put in the dishwasher. It's just now starting to fade a bit.
I use Rapid Tac, and that seems to give the adhesives a much better holding and allows you to make it right the first time, by letting you line up the design after you place it on the object.
the vinyl will be permanent, but the ink is not. I use these sometimes for tumblers that I cover with epoxy. I seal the stickers with a clear spray paint before adhering to the tumbler. BUT, i did wind up spraying this decal and throwing it on a personal coffee mug. I've now washed it about a bajillion times, and its just now starting to fade.
Hi Sonya. Thank you :) I threw the decal from the video onto a coffee mug I had in my house. I have probably run it through the dishwasher at least a dozen times now. No peeling or fading! Since this video, I have used it on ceramic, stainless tumblers and over/under epoxy.
@@dupescraftingdesign7872 There has been no loss of color -but the initial print was not as vibrant as a regular press on 100% poly. There has been zero loss of color though. I send the print to my sub printer, then press the whole thing (with the registration lines) onto oracal, then tell DS to cut. Works perfect every time.
Easier way is cut your vinyl to the image shape using vinyl cutter. Then “tack” it down on the shirt. Cut image out using cutting machine such as Cameo or Cricut place over vinyl and finish the vinyl and sublimation all at once. Prevents the stretching in the vinyl.

it does want to stick a little. I find it easiest to remove the paper from the vinyl, as opposed the vinyl from the paper. Try lowering your heat a little too.
very cool! totally random, what type/brand of heat press do you have? my husband is giving me an upgrade and I think I want something very similar to the one in your video! Thank you!

You can use these on glass. Its basically a sticker. If I were wanting to put an image on glass, I would probably do a clear waterslide, bake it and seal with mod podge.
Hi!! Tried this last night, the vinyl turned blue and didn't actually take any of the ink...any idea why? I don't think he waited until it was cool could that be why? Or is it because we used glossy? Thanks so much! Yours turned out so awesome!
Hi Mandy. I don't why it would have turned blue. Were you reusing a used blowout sheet maybe. The color transferred? Was it the backing sheet? It's a mix truthfully. It also depends on your press. Mine tends to run a little hot. Sublimation in general has pressure sweet spot. Too mcuh and you burn. Too little and not even pressure. You have to test it for your conditions.
I have not tried that,...I guess I know my project for this weekend. I will let you know. However,....The sticker in the video,...I stuck it on one of my coffee mugs and have run it through the dishwasher about 6 times now. Has not peeled at all. Same color.
So my question can you use sublimation ink to print on paper to make stickers , or will I need a second printer dedicated to stickers and one for sublimation?
You can use Sublidecal. J plastic plus has that too and it's great. Cuts easy and so vibrant. If you use this set the paper under a warm press (opened) to pre shrink it prior to pressing.
You can make stickers using sublimation on Oracal 651 white matte or take G Carnes advice. Sublidecal is specifically made for this application. The Oracal is just a lucky find. It is not made to print stickers.
Hi Stacey, it's cool idea but is it safe to heat Oracal 651 since it is made with PVC? HTV is made with a different type of vinyl. PVC is said to be toxic when heated.
That is a GREAT question, and very important. After reading your question, I did some research. I found "PVC has to start burning and go on fire releasing these harmful agents". So, my view is its ok to heat, as long as it doesn't catch on fire. That being said, whatever I press, I can smell -so while probably not in the 'healthy' category- it is always good practice to press any material in a well ventilated space to decrease exposure to any fumes.
I have spoken to technical support at Oracal and they told me this has not been tested for safety and it is not an approved or intended use of their product. Heating this vinyl to the temperatures required for sublimating (in my opinion) is going to release fumes you don't want to be breathing - even if you don't notice much of a smell.
Is it 651 regular vynil ? Permanent vynil or HTV vynil? Video was very helpful by the way! So far we’ve only transferred sublimated images to white glittery htv.
Thank you. It is 651 Oracal- matte white. Take a look at my easy subli video. Might give you a new option to glitter HTV. ua-cam.com/video/cyPLipiiW_E/v-deo.html
I have used so many brands, but I think in this video it was actually A-Sub. There is actually apoint where too much heat and pressure will make it duller. Try less. I have been really liking the Koala brand. You can actually use my code for a 15% discount. STACYODESIGNS www.koalagp.com/?UA-cam&Stacy+O+Designs&+STACYODESIGNS
I actually started subbing on vinyl because my regular inkjet printer was awful. Since this video, I have a new printer and I am now able to make high quality stickers. I do not have an update to this particular video. But a sticker tutorial is coming soon.
I had done a test and these will fade quickly in the sun. They are not weather proof. If you wanted them for outdoors, you could apply transparent Oracal 651 over top and seal the edges with polyacrylic.
no. This is 651, which is an adhesive vinyl, like a sticker. It is not made to go onto fabric. If you are looking for something like that, check out my videos on Easy Subli.
These are adhesive vinyl. It is made for hard, smooth surfaces. For shirts you want Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV). And yes, I have tried sublimation on transparent vinyl. They look,...decent, but the adhesive is compromised with the heat a little.
ACTUALLY, I have used the cricut vinyl. It's not as vibrant, but it does work. I did a test. Stuck it to a coffee mug in my house. I sprayed one side with a clear spraypint and left the other side alone. To this day, the sprayed side is going strong. 8 jillion times in the dishwasher!
How did you get it on the other paper? First I am thinking you copied image off pc maybe then printed it on printer paper then onto the vinyl am I right or wrong?
This is adhesive vinyl. It is for stickers and decals. You can not apply this to a shirt. Check out my easysubli videos. Those are to apply onto shirts.
I tried it on the 651 oracal vinyl and mine came out dull and with a film type of substance on top of the decal. Did you experience this during your trials and what did you find worked if you did. Thanks for the video.
I wouldn't call my print dull,...but it wasn't as vibrant as if I pressed on 100% poly fabric. As for a film, no. I didn't get that. Did you sub onto glossy or matte 651? I used matte.
any other steps to this ? i've tried glossy and matte and they both come out either not pressed enough or with a white layer on top that CAN be wiped off with a wet wipe but it's effecting the image 🤦🏽♀️🤯
I'm trying it currently and I think the film you are referring to is the heat breaking down the glossy coating... I'm going to play around some more with it to see if any time and temps with work with the glossy 651
For cotton clothes😅does it work if you sublimate onto the clear htv vinyl/Oracal 651 and then put it on dark cotton clothes?without cutting it if you don’t have a cutting machine?
To print sublimation images you need to have a dedicated sublimation printer with sublimation ink. It also requires sublimation paper. It's a whole setup and a bit of an investment. When I run into people that want t try it first, I always suggest purchasing a few transfers off etsy (or wherever) to test out the process.
The Epson Eco-Tank printers are the easiest to make into sublimation printers. Don't buy a used one, it won't work. I use Hipoo Sublimation inks which are relatively cheap, around $55 for the whole shebang. Then I use the TexPrint XPHP papers to transfer from. The heat press was my largest investment. Once you do this, you're going to want to do coffee mugs, which are more expensive with awesome results. :)
by itself, the ink washes away -but I did a test spraying clear spray paint and stuck it on a coffee mug I had. I've been putting it in the dishwasher and its held up extremely well.
this didn't work for me. i used oracal 651, heat at 350 - 20sec and it melted all together, continue trying different settings, all the way down to 320 degrees with the same result.
I have tried different temps, different times, and different pressures and my sublimation paper sticks to the vinyl every time...I wish I could get this to work for me!
@@stacyodesigns unfortunately the only type of paper I can get to work with my Epson F570 is the epson brand paper. I have tried different types of paper and the epson paper is the only kind that it will feed through the auto feeder. You would think for such a nice sunlimation printer you could use any kind, but I have tried and it wont work.
I don't get it, how are you using oracal651 , you just heat transfer that vinyl and then sublimated onto t shirtcould you explain that a little bit , cause now I'm confused
Great question -but no. 651 has an adhesive backing and not made for clothing/washing machine. There are some option for garments though. You can look into printable vinyl transfers made for clothing, easy-subli or there is a spray that coats the garment call Poly T.
I have used these under epoxy. I just hit them with 2 coats of clear coat, just so the color won't run. I've never tested it without sealing it though.
When I tried this my image was beautiful on the STICKY SIDE of my vinyl but faded on the front side. I tried increasing/decreasing my heat time and pressure. I'm not sure what's happening, suggestions?
I tried a few different settings before I found what works for MY heat press. Heat presses vary, and I know mine is off by about 7 degrees, so I adjust for that when I press. Have you tested your temp with a laser heat temperature gun? That's how I realized mine runs hot.
I’ve tried this with both gloss and Matt vinyl but I have a layer form that is able to scratch off. I have tried at varying pressure but still get the same results. Any advice?
I too have tried with glossy and mat. I too get this layer that makes the finished result look terrible. As if the finish is coming off the 651. Whats weird is if I peel it and look at the back adhesive side, it looks like it took the sublimation perfectly. I just wished the front side looked as good. The residue is almost a milky splotchy type of effect. I cant scratch it off and looks low budget. Im guessing that the sublimation paper is sticking to the mat finish and when I peel it, part of the finish is staying on the paper. I would live advise too.
Alien Zombeats Hi Thanks for you reply I ran about 10 tests and I found this layer forms at exactly 133 degrees Celsius on my machine so I reduced it to press at 130 and for a longer time 100 secs and at about 4 pressure on my hotronix and there was no layer hope this helps. It’s still not a vivid colour but I like them anyway. I can’t afford another machine right now sadly or I’d buy a sticker printer too.
Emma, I'm glad you were able to resolve. I actually can't comment, because I have not experienced this. Are you peeling cool? What type of cover sheet are you using? Maybe there is moisture getting trapped?
It's hard to comment because I have not experienced this -but my only guess would be letting it cool down and cold peeling. I suppose it it quite possible for the top layer of the 651 to adhere to the sub paper. I don't normally have glossy 651 on hand so i can't test it. I've been on the lookout in stores for it though.
No - it does not wash off. I have run it through the dishwasher on a mug about a dozen times, a little fading, but not significant. I had also done some testing where I hit it with some clear coat and that one has been perfect! (clear coated BEFORE applying the decal)
Same problem! Yes I did sandwich in the parchment paper as you did on the video. I’m having a little better luck just using the regular Laser copy paper but my image is a little muted so going to mess with temp and time a little to see if I can get it work without melting. What brand of sublimation paper are you using?
What is sublimation? I'm a newbie. Don't even have a.machine yet. I have a project. Personalize water canteens. I asked if I can engrave using a die cutting machine like cricut? Was told i need a laser engraver for that. Someone said i could do etching. I then asked if I need a mug press if I used permanent vinyl for them. Was told id only need it to sublimate or use htv. I have no idea what that meant
Sublimation is a printing process where when the ink is pressed with heat, it turns from the solid to the gas state, without passing through the liquid state. This is how the ink is infused into the polyester material fibers. Sublimation can only be done on high count polyester material or items coated with a sublimation ready base. As for your canteens. A cricut can not engrave onto that type of item,...but you can use your cricut to cut out a stencil to do glass etching with a product such as Armor Etch. This is basically a cream acid that eats at the glass and creates that frosted look. You can also apply a permanent vinyl decal of your design. You do not need a mug press to apply vinyl. The mug press applies heat and pressure, which is needed for sublimation and HTV applications. I hope this helps.
Like the initial vibrancy? or how long it lasts? The colors transfer well. on a scale of 1-10 I would give it a 7.5. It is long lasting though. It will not fade.
Thank you for the video! I'm trying to replicate what you did but my sublimation paper is sticking to the vinyl. Am I using too much pressure? Letting it cool too much before peeling? How can I fix this?
@@stacyodesigns I was using butcher paper! I just tried it with parchment paper instead and still had paper sticking but it was much less. Best news yet ... I was able to wipe off all the paper that stuck on with a slightly damn paper town and now I have a beautifully sublimated piece of permanent vinyl!! Thank you so much!
hmmmm. Are you using white MATTE oracal? Maybe there is some moisture that is causing it -either in your sub paper or the oracal? Are you using a high resolution image?

Heating this vinyl to the temperatures required for sublimating (in my opinion) is going to release fumes you don't want to be breathing - even if you don't notice much of a smell.
Are you using the matte or glossy vinyl? I need to do this.
matte Oracal 651 vinyl
Is it 651 regular vynil ? Permanent vynil or HTV vynil? Video was very helpful by the way! So far we’ve only transferred sublimated images to white glittery htv.
Thank you. It is 651 Oracal- matte white. Take a look at my easy subli video. Might give you a new option to glitter HTV.

To make it more vibrant use clear htv or laminate on top press and then sub once cool
Since making this video, I have found the magic that is laminate. Its amazing :) Thank you
Awesome what a wonderful idea thank you Stacy O Designs
Glad you liked it!!
Did this some 10 years ago lol when I first into sublimation. I grab the wrong paper and pressed it.
It's such an amazing feeling when you find something that 'shouldn't' work- actually works!
What type of transfer/sub paper did you use? I used A-sub and it stuck on the vinyl and was dull in color.
I have used so many brands, but I think in this video it was actually A-Sub. There is actually apoint where too much heat and pressure will make it duller. Try less.
I have been really liking the Koala brand. You can actually use my code for a 15% discount. STACYODESIGNS

Do you have any updates for this year?? I have a customer who wants Miles Morales on while vinyl. And no clue how it works!
I actually started subbing on vinyl because my regular inkjet printer was awful. Since this video, I have a new printer and I am now able to make high quality stickers. I do not have an update to this particular video. But a sticker tutorial is coming soon.
How long does this last in the sun, do you have to put clear protection vinyl over it. Is it water proof???
I had done a test and these will fade quickly in the sun. They are not weather proof. If you wanted them for outdoors, you could apply transparent Oracal 651 over top and seal the edges with polyacrylic.
Once you've pressed the sublimation design onto the oracal, can you press the oracal onto a shirt?
no. This is 651, which is an adhesive vinyl, like a sticker. It is not made to go onto fabric. If you are looking for something like that, check out my videos on Easy Subli.
This is great! Thank you!!
You're so welcome! Glad you liked it.
So then do you apply on a tshirt?? Do you have a video? How about the same viynl but clear???
These are adhesive vinyl. It is made for hard, smooth surfaces. For shirts you want Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV).
And yes, I have tried sublimation on transparent vinyl. They look,...decent, but the adhesive is compromised with the heat a little.
Hi 👋, does it have to be oracle vinyl or would it work on white cricut permanent vinyl?
ACTUALLY, I have used the cricut vinyl. It's not as vibrant, but it does work. I did a test. Stuck it to a coffee mug in my house. I sprayed one side with a clear spraypint and left the other side alone. To this day, the sprayed side is going strong. 8 jillion times in the dishwasher!
I noticed after I did mine, it had a like a film or something on top. Did yours?
That's probably just a little paper residue. try wiping with a damp cloth
How did you get it on the other paper? First I am thinking you copied image off pc maybe then printed it on printer paper then onto the vinyl am I right or wrong?
I printed the image onto sublimation paper from my PC (with sublimation ink) then press that paper onto matte oracal 651.
Have you tried to put on on a shirt? Wondering if it fades.
@@stacyodesigns I used glossy, which is all i had. Do you think that is why it wasn't as vibrant on your end?
Same problem as myself. I bet once you peel it, the back of the 651 looks way better than the front.
any other steps to this ? i've tried glossy and matte and they both come out either not pressed enough or with a white layer on top that CAN be wiped off with a wet wipe but it's effecting the image 🤦🏽♀️🤯
I'm trying it currently and I think the film you are referring to is the heat breaking down the glossy coating... I'm going to play around some more with it to see if any time and temps with work with the glossy 651
What type of sub paper is that? I use Chromablast on SG400... wonder if it’ll work with it?
As long as its the sublimation process, I don't see why it wouldn't work. Try it out, I would love to hear about your results.
There are a couple of different Oracle vinyls, can you link me to the exact one you used? Hanks in advance!

And when you go apply that vinyl to the fabric you have to apply heat on again wondering if is going to burn the image
She's subbing it on oracal permanent vinyl, not heat transfer vinyl...
This is vinyl. It is only meant to be put on hard surfaces. It does not go on clothing. For clothing you would use a product like easysubli
Can i ask which heat press you use? that looks so easy to use
I absolutely love my heat press!!! Its the 15x15 swing away from US Cutter.
350 for 25 worked for me, thanks
That's awesome! I have found each press is a little different and times and temps can vary.
Cool gonna try this, thanks for sharing
Angie Fink awesome! Have fun and happy subbing.
Does this only work for small images with that temp and time. I tried it on like a 9x9 image and it got stuck wrinkles and just plain bad
Ya know, I've never tried a large piece before. Did you let it cool before peeling?
@@stacyodesigns yes. I’ll try with a smaller piece and start adjust from there. I will get this lol
Would metamark M7 work? I don't have any oracal 651 left
I'm not sure -I have not used that brand. But if you try it, please update this post. I would love to know too. :)
For cotton clothes😅does it work if you sublimate onto the clear htv vinyl/Oracal 651 and then put it on dark cotton clothes?without cutting it if you don’t have a cutting machine?
651 does not adhere to clothing. You can sublimate on siser glitter htv.
This is adhesive vinyl for hard surfaces. It will not stick to clothing. You can sublimate onto transparent HTV for what you are referring to.
Thank you! But I have one question. How do you make the sublimation?
You need a sublimation printer
Girl and a year later your the best video so thanks love 😘
Thanks so much! :)
How does it hold up to washing? This is awesome!
by itself, the ink washes away -but I did a test spraying clear spray paint and stuck it on a coffee mug I had. I've been putting it in the dishwasher and its held up extremely well.
How did you tanager it after you sealed it?
im new to vynil... is this white oracal 651?
yes. It is white matte Oracal 651
I've been trying this but I keep getting white blotchy marks, do you have any idea where I'm going wrong?
It sounds like you have uneven pressure or cold spots from your heat press.
this didn't work for me. i used oracal 651, heat at 350 - 20sec and it melted all together, continue trying different settings, all the way down to 320 degrees with the same result.
Are you using parchment paper? Maybe your press is heating higher than the display says?
Nice I’m going to try this thank you for the video.
Awesome! :) Thank you
I tried several times and my a sub paper always gets stuck onto the vinyl when I try and peel away. Any tips???
Are you removing the subli from the plastic backing? Also, I have found that Reynolds brand parchment is a game changer!
I have tried different temps, different times, and different pressures and my sublimation paper sticks to the vinyl every time...I wish I could get this to work for me!
hmmm. Have you tried a different sublimation paper? I have experienced this with one brand. No matter what I changed, it stuck.
Just stumbled across this!! Thank you so much!!
You are so welcome! :)
I don't get it, how are you using oracal651 , you just heat transfer that vinyl and then sublimated onto t shirtcould you explain that a little bit , cause now I'm confused
651 is an adhesive vinyl. It is made for hard surfaces. I applied this to a coffee mug. It is not meant for fabric.
Have your pressed this on a garment? Is it washable?
Great question -but no. 651 has an adhesive backing and not made for clothing/washing machine. There are some option for garments though. You can look into printable vinyl transfers made for clothing, easy-subli or there is a spray that coats the garment call Poly T.
Do you know if putting epoxy over that sticker will it work, come out??
I have used these under epoxy. I just hit them with 2 coats of clear coat, just so the color won't run. I've never tested it without sealing it though.
thanks so much for sharing this!!
You are so welcome!
When I tried this my image was beautiful on the STICKY SIDE of my vinyl but faded on the front side. I tried increasing/decreasing my heat time and pressure. I'm not sure what's happening, suggestions?
SO,....I was asked to try this technique with glossy vinyl,..and YUP, that's the result with glossy. Is that what you used?
@@stacyodesigns I’m getting this same result with matte AND glossy. 🤷🏼♀️
Do you have any kind of poly product on the vinyl?
I do not
hi stacy i tryed it on 354 F in c its 179 on 25 seconds the sublimate did not went over complet have to try some other setting.
I tried a few different settings before I found what works for MY heat press. Heat presses vary, and I know mine is off by about 7 degrees, so I adjust for that when I press. Have you tested your temp with a laser heat temperature gun? That's how I realized mine runs hot.
Finally Thank you.
you're welcome :) Have fun
I get white splotches when I try to sublimate on oracle 651 white or clear - any ideas why? some of it wipes off but not all of it
white splothces could be uneven pressure or paper residue.
Emma Edwards 100 seconds at 130 Celsius? Because I’m getting the film/white splotching at 330 Fahrenheit at 20 seconds
does this wash off easily?
No - it does not wash off. I have run it through the dishwasher on a mug about a dozen times, a little fading, but not significant. I had also done some testing where I hit it with some clear coat and that one has been perfect! (clear coated BEFORE applying the decal)
@@stacyodesigns thank you! is there a way to make it seem more glossy? is it just by clear coating over it once its sublimated?
@@KindaRuined the clear coat does give it a little gloss. You could always coat with epoxy - but then it would be a handwash only situation.
will the oracal still stick to the desired spot like a car window?
Technically yes. Clean the window with alcohol for best adhesion. However,...Sublimation ink is not UV resistant. The color will fade.
I have try 4 times but my sublimation paper sticks to the vinyl won't come off
Are you using parchment paper on top and bottom? I found sticking problems when I did it with craft paper.
Same problem! Yes I did sandwich in the parchment paper as you did on the video. I’m having a little better luck just using the regular Laser copy paper but my image is a little muted so going to mess with temp and time a little to see if I can get it work without melting. What brand of sublimation paper are you using?
What's best way to transfer lettering onto a vinyl wrap on a car already ?
I have not done a car wrap, but I would think low tack transfer tape would easily pick up the vinyl and not damage the car finish.
Would this work using the cricut brand?
I'm not sure, I haven't tried it. But I bet it would.
How well did the colors adhere to the vinyl?
Like the initial vibrancy? or how long it lasts? The colors transfer well. on a scale of 1-10 I would give it a 7.5. It is long lasting though. It will not fade.
do you have a link to purchase the transparent vinyl?
I actually buy it from a local vinyl store in Florida. They do not sell online.
Thank you for the video! I'm trying to replicate what you did but my sublimation paper is sticking to the vinyl. Am I using too much pressure? Letting it cool too much before peeling? How can I fix this?
Are you using parchment paper on top and bottom? I found sticking issues when I used craft paper.
I’m having the exact same issue and not sure what I’m doing wrong 🙈
I have tried this numerous times and no matter the temp or time, the image comes out cloudy. Any suggestions?
Mine too....
hmmmm. Are you using white MATTE oracal? Maybe there is some moisture that is causing it -either in your sub paper or the oracal? Are you using a high resolution image?
Very nice video, im going to experiment !
Thank you! Have fun!
