Sublimate a Dollar Tree Glass Cutting Board (no paper cleanup required)

- Опубліковано 8 лют 2025
- I did a video recently where I sublimated a couple of cute gnomes on a glass cutting board from the Dollar Tree. It turned out super cute, but I had to clean a lot of paper off the back of the cutting board that was stuck to the vinyl. In this video, I tried a new brand of sublimation paper and it peeled right off the cutting board without any cleanup necessary. I had seen other people on UA-cam use it and couldn't believe the difference, so I just had to try it. Boy am I glad I did! A viewer helped me find this image later and I have since purchased it but as of August 2022 that Etsy Shop no longer exists. If you google "blue flower faith" and look at images, you will find the design. Also, I found it in another Etsy Shop today. www.etsy.com/l...

Thank you for your video and getting to the point. I hate it when people talk and talk.
Thank you so much!!! I am glad you found it helpful.
Me too!
I watched your prior video yesterday and watched this video today. I have to say Marilyn you have the most soothing and comfortable voice ever. I really appreciate you didn't bring your dog/cat on the video for 5 minutes. This is exactly the video I was needing since I bought 4 cases (yes, cases) of the DT square cutting boards. You rock!!! (although now I'm concerned about the pictures fading and the toxic chemicals that can come through.) A problem for another day. Thanks, again you're amazing!!!
Thank you so much, Carol, for your inspiring comment!! I appreciate it very much.
You have a relaxing voice. I listened to your video even though it was not what I was looking for. :)
Thank you for such a nice comment! So sweet:)
So smart with the magnets on your heat press for the paper!! I am going to do that!
Thank you so much!!!
1. This was a phenomenal video
2. You are a phenomenal instructor
3. The fact that you have replied to every comment on this video speaks volumes.
Definitely subscribing to your channel! Thanks for being you!!
Thank you so so much Alisha!!! Such a wonderful comment to read!
Wow! My mind is blown! I never knew you could use vinyl to sublimate like that! Also, that is THE best transfer paper! I have a massive roll of it because I refuse to use anything else.
Yes, it is a fun way to make a unique and inexpensive cutting board or trivet! I don't know if all vinyls will work, but the oracal 651 does so I just stick with that. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!!
Great video...not too much talking and easy to follow. I saw a guy wet hit first before he pulled it off. I've had these cutting boards for years and was trying to figure out to utilize them.
Thanks so much! If I use other paper, I have to wet them down also. They are fun to make and I love that you can customize them.
Thank you for explaining everything so well! I have watched several videos on this subject and no one ever explained it as well as you. Thank you!
You're very welcome. Thanks so much for taking time to watch and comment!
I agree. She explained so well. I watched 3 videos this morning and was thinking I would not be trying it. but now I feel like going to the dollar tree and grabbing some cutting boards.
@@sarah28681 go for it! These are so fun and inexpensive to make.
I ❤ your tutorials! So easy to understand!
Thank you so much!
I watched the man who suggested the Rapid Tac, have to lay his glass cutting board in the sink and work like crazy to scrub off his paper. Thanks for your paper suggestion.
That's what I had to do on my first cutting board so was happy to see a video recommending this paper as well:)
I have watched so many videos Sublimating on DT Cutting Boards. Thank You, it was so spot on and concise and yes your voice is perfect for videos
Thank you soooo much for your feedback!!! I tend to cringe when I hear my voice, so I am glad it is not annoying to others:)
Very pretty
Thanks so much!!!
Beautiful
Thank you so much!
Awesome video
Thank you so much!!!
All I can say is WOW!!!!
Thank you Tami!!!
Beautiful! Your tutorial is perfect! I just made a couple and wanted to tell you that I did 1 with Oracal 651 and the other with just some cheapie vinyl from a bundle I bought from Amazon. They both worked perfect! And fyi...if you screw up after pressing...(I did 4 x 90 minutes!) The vinyl comes off very easily and very cleanly. It was about an hour later, so it was completely cooled. Thanks again!
I am sorry my reply is so late. I thought I had replied to your message but apparently I failed to get it out. I really appreciate you letting us know that the non-Oracal vinyl worked well! I appreciate it.
Marilyn, this turned out beautifully!
Thank you!!!
A little dish soap and water works great.
Thank you for the suggestion🙂
That is so pretty, tfs.
Thank you so much!
Thank you for the video. At first I thought the vinyl was melting and sublimation print was not coming through but all worked out with more time…
That is great!!! These are so fun and inexpensive to make!
@@MakingwithMarilyn yes they are!
Great video. I’ll try this tomorrow.
Thank you!!! Good luck with yours!
OMG I have to try this! Thank you ever so much for the video
Thanks so much for watching! These are so much fun and I love that you can personalize them for special events. It is just a hack so doesn't last forever the way a "real" sublimation blank does but they are really fun to make.
Girl you are amazing! I have been wondering what I have been doing wrong with my plate sublimation. Thanks to you and this video, I figured it out. Amazing! thank you so much for taking the time to make this video!

Good morning Marilyn! I ran across this video while trying to decide what to make for gifts. I think this is it! Quick, easy and cost effective. Thank you for the awesome video.
Thanks for watching Stacey!!! Yes, these are so much fun and I love that you can customize them any way you want.
Good video thanks looks good ❤
Thanks Jessie!
Wow can't wait to try this tomorrow!
Yes, other than getting the vinyl on without bubbles, it is a super fun and easy project. If you have issues with your vinyl, I have heard of people just spraying a little water on and then squeezing it out. Let me know how it goes.
It’s beautiful
WOW, thank you for the great video. I’m just getting into sublimation, so something new to try. This is the first time I’ve seen using vinyl. Need to give a try.
Get ready to be addicted!!! It's so much fun:) Good luck with all of your new projects. I just ordered some new things from Amazon to try.

For oracle 651 vinyl does it matter if it's glossy or matte?
I have seen others say it doesn't matter, but I've only used this one.
Thanks for explaining this in detail. It came out Great
Thank you Connie🙂
Amazing!
Thank you!!!
I appreciate your videos and they have helped me so much, especially the sublimation on the glass cutting boards. I follow your process and it works very well. I have noticed that over time, a few of my trivets are getting fuzzy (for lack of a better word). They used to be crisp and clear and now they are a little muddy over time. Wondering if you have any input about what I could be doing wrong. Thanks in advance.
I think it is a result of the hack. I believe the ink migrates a bit in the vinyl over time. For a hack, I think it is a great project, but I would not sell these due to that issue. If it gets to where you do not want to use it, you can soak it for a long time and get the vinyl off to make another one.
@@MakingwithMarilyn thanks for your reply. Wondering if you’ve ever used transparent vinyl and if they do the same thing over time?
What a neat idea!
I wish I could take credit for thinking of it:) I saw someone on UA-cam use this process, so I decided to try it myself. This is the second video I have done using the process and I love how it turned out. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

how does this do with washing, I'm guessing a person wouldn't put it in a dish washer? thanks, great tutorial!
I just wash the top off with a damp soapy rag and then rinse. I don't soak it at all.

Love your video! When I click on the link for the image it says it's no longer available. Are you able to share it? TY
I purchased it so am not able to share it on, but google "blue faith flower" and click on images and you will find something you can work with. It's this image but you will have to be able to manipulate it. Let me know if you have any questions about it.
I found it in another store www.etsy.com/listing/1149239693/faith-png-sublimation?ref=cart
@@MakingwithMarilyn Thank you!!
I had bought a different spray adhesive that was repositional. The vinyl went on perfect but after i pressed it bubbles appeared. Does this happen with rapid tack?
Rapid tac isn't really an adhesive, it is just a liquid that helps you be able to move your adhesive around before you heat it to the surface you are putting it on. As. long as you squeegee out all of the liquid, the vinyl goes on smoothly. But, you do have to make sure you squeegee it all out, just like when you are removing air from under the vinyl. I think I may have shown a close up of this cutting board after using the rapid tac. It was very very smooth.
My board is more like 8" so should I make the vinyl round 8" and then the sub a tad bigger or still do the vinyl round at 7.75 and the sub a tad bigger? I'm still pretty new to sublimation. But now I know why people want the bigger print printers. lol
I would make the vinyl just slightly smaller than the board so it doesn’t accidentally show a bit from the back. And then I would make the print slightly larger than that so it goes just beyond the vinyl.
@@MakingwithMarilyn Thank you so much!!! I'm so glad I found this channel. :)
Do you think if I used the vinyl on a ceramic tile and then placed my print face down on the vinyl it would work the same?
I am not sure, but what I have done and have seen others do is to add lamination film to ceramic tiles and then sublimate onto that. I have only done this on white tiles, though. Some people use the 3M lamination pouches and pull them apart. I prefer this really thin laminating film. amzn.to/37bHNf0 If you end up trying the vinyl, I would love to hear if it works for you:)
Beautiful. Can this be done without a heat press? Are you able to use the cricut hand held heat press for iron on vinyl?
You can use the Cricut easy press for iron on vinyl. I think you would need the easy press 2 or later for sublimation due to the heat required. It might be difficult to keep even pressure against the cutting board for long enough to do this process, but might be worth a try. If you do try it, let me know how it comes out. Thanks for watching!!!
@@MakingwithMarilyn thanks Marilyn
beautiful
Thank you!!!
Will most vinyls work or does it have to be that specific type or bond?
I have only tried this brand, so I'm sorry I can't answer the question.
If i only have a 8.5 by 11 sublimation printer how can i print something 12 by 12. Do i have to tile the print job then piece together
Yes, you will have to piece it together. You can probably print 8.5 x 14, which would allow you to piece it together using 2 prints.
I have read people say after a few months the image gets blury .. how long these have lasted for you ? And have you tried the laminate method?
I have had varying results. I have one that I did at least two years ago and it looks great (not quite as perfect as the day I did it, but close), but I have had two others that became blurry after some months. If I were selling these, I would use real sublimation blanks but for fun things for my home or family, they are really fun to make.
Can you put the vinyl on the plate, use infusible ink then heat press?
You can probably replace the sublimation print with infusible ink, but I haven't actually tried it. Let me know if you decide to go for it!
@@MakingwithMarilyn thx I will
Ok great video question.. i didn't mirror my image so why did my image show up backwards? The writing is backwards what did I do wrong? Other than that it turned out beautifully tk u for your time
Did you put your vinyl and image on the bottom side of the cutting board but image facing up?
Thank you for sharing. Do you need something to make it waterproof or hand washing only?
I wash mine with a soapy dish rag and then rinse it off under the faucet. I haven't done anything to it other than shown in the video. Thanks for watching!!!
Can you use any htv for the first part?
I have only used the brand of permanent vinyl (not htv) shown in the video. If you try it, let us know the outcome please.
Does your heat press heat on the bottom and the top?
@@eliazarsoto527 no, just the top.
It's hard for me to tell but did you press the glass side or the sub side
I pressed from the top, which is why it takes so long for the sublimation to happen.
Thank you!
After I tried this I could see moisture trapped between my glass and vinyl. How can I avoid this and do you have any idea what I did wrong?
Did you put the vinyl on with the wet application method or regular method? Some people will poke a tiny hole in the vinyl to let any trapped air or moisture out.
@@MakingwithMarilyn I used the wet method and have wasted a whole role of vinyl trying this. I must be doing something wrong but I put the vinyl on and squeegee it.
Marilyn....I was wondering what your thoughts are on trying to use the DTF film and powder and putting in on a glass cutting board from dollar tree??
If you want it for decoration only, it might work to put it on the back (smooth) side since once the adhesive powder cures, it is pretty clear. Even for just decoration, I feel like it would not stick well to the pebbly textured top. If you try it, I would love to hear about your results!
Goo gone works great.
Thanks for the great tip!
Nice ! Does it have to be Oracle vinyl?
I have heard some who have used a different vinyl, but I have only used that brand so can't say that it works for sure.
Hello is there a way to get rid of bubbles after you sublimate?
Possibly by poking the bubble with a sewing pin to let the air escape and then repressing it for a bit, but I'm not really sure.
Can you give us an update on how these still look after time?
I still have the glass cutting board. The image is not as crisp as it was when I made it, but it still looks nice. For a hack so that I could make customized cutting boards, I am still happy with it. If I were selling sublimation cutting boards, I would go with the more expensive blanks.
Is there any way to do this without a heat press? Obviously I don't have any experience. 😉
I'm sorry Julie, but I don't think so. I wish I had better news for you.
I loved your video. It is so clear to understand. I couldn’t wait to get to Dollar Tree. Our Dollar Tree doesn’t have the trivets. Could I ask where you got your design or did you make it? Thank you.
Thank you very much! I got the design off of Etsy. Search ETSY for Faith PNG Sublimation and I believe you will find it. It looks like it is a different seller, but the person I bought it from on Etsy no longer has it listed.
Why did I get bubbles under vinyl after the 15 sec press? I used the rap tac to adhere the vinyl. Could that be it?
The bubbles are just trapped air. When it is heated, the air expands causing the bubbles. Did you squeegee out all of the liquid? That should really help take care of air bubble issues. Some people will even take a pin and poke a tiny hole in trapped air bubbles. I hope this helps.
@@MakingwithMarilyn it worked after all.
@@angelsartography1178 that’s great!!! Thanks for letting me know.

Where can I buy the spray u used on the rabi tac at??
There are various sizes available amzn.to/40NIVfj
Ink jet print or laser print? Are both fine for the image?
It is an Ink jet printer that has sublimation ink in it. This project requires sublimation ink.
Great video, thank you. I do have a question though; after a while even the most perfect outcome gets blurry. What am I doing wrong? Please help
I don't think you are doing anything wrong. With this hack, you can get beautiful cutting boards, but for really long lasting cutting boards, you will probably have to buy expensive blanks. I still have this exact cutting board and it looks okay, but it is not as crisp as it was when I made it.
@@MakingwithMarilyn Thank you so much
Can this be done with an iron if you don't have a heat press?
I have never tried it with an iron, but if the iron gets hot enough and you can apply quite a bit of pressure and keep track of time, it seems like it could work. If you try it, please let me know if it is successful. Thanks for watching!
Can you share where you got the svg for this product?
Yes, I got it off of Etsy. The store I bought it from no longer exists, but I found another store that has it and have a link to the design in the video description. Happy crafting!
Can you use regular permanent vinyl Cricut brand? Or just oracle 651
I don't have any of the Cricut permanent vinyl and have not tried it. If you try it, let us know how it comes out. If it doesn't work, you should be able to soak the glass board for a long time and then peel the vinyl off. It takes a bit of work to get it off the glass, but when I messed one up, that's what I did:)
Thank you I will give it a go :-)
Are used StarCraft permanent vinyl instead of the oracle 651 it did work not quite as bright as the oracle 651 but all in all it turned out quite well just wanted to share it
Where do I see links I don’t see any great job loves the video

You said you used TexPrint R paper, but the link you included is for TexPrint DTr Heavy paper. Which one should it be?
Interesting. The paper I bought was TexPrint R but the link now goes to another paper even though it used to go to the TexPrint R paper. Amazon must have changed something. Thank so much!
@@MakingwithMarilyn Thank you. I just wanted to be sure to get the right thing. Great videos!
The paper specifies for sawgrass and another printer… are we able to use it with an Epson tank printer?
Yes, I only have Epson ecotank converted printers and it works fine.
Can I do this with infusible ink?
I believe so, but I have not tried it. That is a good idea for a new video! If you are subscribed with your "all notifications" on, you should be notified when I post it. I think I will do a holiday one.
What sublimation paper did you use? That came off with no issues
I used Tex Print R paper. Yes, it came off so cleanly!!!
Did u place the vinyl facing down on to the sublimation? Or is vinyl side facing up
The vinyl was added to the glass cutting board first. Then I placed the sublimation print under and against the vinyl. The vinyl is on the bottom of the glass cutting board, so facing down. Let me know if this did not answer your question and thank you for watching!
great demo ! I wonder if you can "wash" the glass after you added the vinyl and sublimation print ?
I use a soapy dish rag and wipe off anything on it, and then rinse it under the faucet. I don't think it would fare too well in the dishwasher but have never tried it. Thanks so much for watching!!!
Good, informative video. I just want to add that normally with sublimation printing you would reverse/mirror the image before printing but with this method/item you do not reverse/mirror it....not sure if you mentioned that. Great job.
Thank you! I am not sure if I did but even if I did, repetition is a good thing when learning new concepts:) Thanks for watching!
12/22/2022 question when doing this project you don’t mirror the designs?
No, since it is coming up through the bottom, you do not mirror it. Thanks so much for watching!
What is the name of the sub paper?
It is Tex Print R paper.
Do you have to use the Matt Vinyl?
I have seen other people say they have used glossy with the process, but I have not tried it.
Hi Marilyn, great tutorial! I hope I'm not being redundant with my question since I didn't read all the comments. I use dye-sub cutting boards & they are super durable but quite expensive, so I would like to try the vinyl method you showed.
My question is, are these boards dishwasher safe, or does the vinyl come off?
I have never put mine in the dishwasher. I just wash the top with a soapy rag and rinse it off under the faucet. I don’t think they would do too well going through the dishwasher in the long run.
@@MakingwithMarilyn That was quick!! LOL Thanks for the reply. When I do the dye-sub boards, I know that the dishwasher is ok, but I was concerned about the vinyl.
So you are just using regular white vinyl?
I am using this vinyl www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N7YH58Y/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B01N7YH58Y&linkCode=as2&tag=makingwith022-20&linkId=cfa34da582955dc54cd91beb9d5c46a3
Hi!! I tried your method and one turned out great and then the other after putting the vinyl on with the tack you mentioned it was perfect no bubbles then I put it in the heat press for 15 sec like you did and it came with some bubbles. And some where big and caused the vinyl to crease.
Can you remove the vinyl anyway or heat the image off?
Oh no! I am sorry that happened. Heat will cause any little bubbles to expend. If you soak your cutting board in water for awhile, you can pull it off. It’s not real easy to do but I have definitely done that.
Did you press it with vinyl side down? Permanent vinyl can't take direct heat.
