  • Netgear, after launching the AT&T focused Nighthawk 5G Pro almost a year ago, finally released its unbranded and unlocked version called the Nighthawk M5 5G that is available without going through AT&T.
    This new version, model number MR5200, has the additional support for cellular bands that make it flexible for use on all three major carriers. But, at $699.99, it's significantly more expensive than the AT&T version.
    The Nighthawk M5 5G has been available for pre-order for several months, and is now shipping.

    Hello. I've been running this hotspot for a week now and I'm pleased with the performance. It runs pretty cool, I've heard complaints that previous models overheat but this isn't the case with mine. It's connecting on B66 with a TMobile SIM and picks up well. I have the Netgear 2x2 MIMO patch antenna in my bag and that helps in areas with poor coverage. I am in Central Valley area so the towers here are older equipment so can't speak to it's performance with latest stuff. I really wish at this price point it had 2 SIM slots so I could have both T-Mobile & AT&T SIM cards in it at the same time, so I wouldn't have to keep track of where a 2nd SIM went. I guess I will tape the 2nd SIM inside back cover for now. I like also that it has a "guest WiFi" feature and that I can turn off 2.4 GHz WiFi which none of my devices really need anyhow.

    For me, might as well wait 6-12 months to see what ATT does on rolling out mid-band C band 5G, which they haven't even started yet as of 1/22 thanks to the FAA. I've had a Cricket (AT&T MVNO) 5G K92 and AT&T low band 5G (yes it says "5G" next to the signal bars) is SLOWER than their 4GLTE, so I turned OFF 5G to get better speed. Now, I live 7 miles from downtown, and TMO has 5G n41 mid-band 5G there, I get400-500 Mbps down when shopping downtown, but where I live only low-band TMo. 5G which is garbage just like ATT. Let's just say, there's working on it. It's definitely worthwhile future-proofing if you're out to buy a new phone, but don't expect fast 5G unless you live in a larger city. Out in the country, only expect 4GLTE until somewhere between 2022-2025. It's a race between VZ, TMO and ATT to see who delivers quickest, but I would bet dollars to doughnuts they'll all take about the same amount of time to deliver, so you may want to hold off on a 5G hotspot until you're sure which carrier delivers "REAL 5G" (they should just put a 5GR sign next to the signal bar). And the easiest way to tell around here....just call the local Walmart and ask the guys in the electronics dept., who sell them all, and here's another tip (I know the cell phone companies won't like me for saying this): They ALL give you at least 7 days to return your new 5G phone if it "doesn't quite work the way I expected 5G to be....." That right there is the #1 reason the salespeople at Walmart will at least try to be honest with their opinion.....

I can do without the 5G, I have the M1 but im interested in using the newer chipset in this model for the bigger upload speeds. i'm getting conflicting reviews if this one can be used in a "LTE only" mode or not.

    Ok got a question; If I use a 4x4 MIMO antenna on my RV, and can only connect (2) to the Nighthawk M5, is there a way to, or does it makes sense to use the other (2) cables for a "local" antenna for the remaining 2 MIMOs on the M5? As in, connecting a blade antenna to each cable right next to the M5? Thanks again for your informative content.

    • @MobileInternetResourceCenter
      @MobileInternetResourceCenter  2 роки тому

      There are only 2 antennas ports. The other two are internal and you can’t attach external antennas to them. If you want 4x4 external MIMO look to routers not hotspots.

  • @vincentfox
    @vincentfox 2 роки тому

    What is a simple 2x2 MIMO antenna option for this? I bought an MR5200, and looked at the Netgear patch antenna but it doesn't seem to cover 5G frequencies. Does that matter? I'd like to be able to take road trips and window mount or magnetic roofmount something to get better signal. Don't want to permanent mount, want to be able to move among vehicles. Also the Netgear patch antenna I've seen y'all say is $30-ish on Amazon, it's more like $50. Perhaps a pair of the weBoost magnetic mount fins would work, but similarly not sure about the frequency bands.

    Yeah the new device isn't really worth it, and I bought an open box MR5100 on eBay for $380 dollars which was a bit more than what I would have paid for but as an LTE modem, it is really good and also having 5G mmwave, I was able to get 800mbps down on WiFi 6 while at a theme park (Busch Gardens FL) which had 5G+ coverage. But as for a 5G device, it isn't worth $500 or $700 dollars. I'm holding off for upgrading when they have an x65 modem one.

    The other downside is that it is a NetGear. I have the 4G version and the only way I can use it continously is to remove the back, turn it upside down and blow a fan on it while it is charging. If I don't do that, it stops charging and gives a battery heat warning. Even in 70 degree weather. I don't have that problem with my Verizon Mifi which is a year older, has a grandfathered unlimited plan for $70 a month and has basically replaced our cable carrier, allowing me to work remotely and stream a couple of hours of TV everyday if I wish. Thus, the Netgear is the backup. If I'd known about the heat problems with their battery setup, I would have made a different choice.

    • @MobileInternetResourceCenter

      That's not an issue we've ever heard of with the Netgear Nighthawk.. so it's likely isolated to your unit, or related to a weak signal at your location that is causing your unit to have to extra hard. Or you may have a defective one.

    Correct me if I'm wrong but I bought a $300 phone that gets speeds that often amounts to two or three times faster than the Nighthawk M5 and my phone works great as a hotspot with all of the devices that I use in my remote work, it seems to me there's not really a use case for a device like this when an Android phone supports way more bands and gives faster data speeds and cost a lot less. The only possible strength I see is that this thing supports external antennas but the external antennas produce slower download and upload speeds in areas that already have good coverage and only marginally improve the signal in areas where there is a weak signal. I bought the Nighthawk M5 and M6 but neither one is consistently as fast and stable as my $300 Android phone when used as a hotspot.

      If you have an AT&T business account, you should look at the Nighthawk M6/M6 Pro instead, which are newer and more capable devices.
      As for the ability to live-stream, these devices can support that as long as you are in a location with sufficient bandwidth and have a sufficient data plan.

    I'm with AT&T and can only get this MR5200 to connect to 4G+ when adding the following APN settings:
    APN Name: ATT Broadband
    APN: phone
    PDP: IPV4V6
    PDP Roaming: IPV4
    Authentication: None
    Username: (blank)
    Password: (blank)
    It will NOT connect to 5G. Do you know the proper APN settings to have this connect to AT&T's 5G network? I am in a 5G area here in Florida, and I got a new 5G sim card from AT&T just for this device (AT&T thinks its for a cell phone). I'm on the older AT&T Unlimited Plus Multi Line which says it has 5G. I also placed the MR5200 by the window.
    Hopefully this device isn't band locked from AT&T's 5G network. Not sure why since Netgear advertises it as an unlocked 5G device that works best on AT&T and T-Mobile.
