Paul Cangialosi stopped by the shop to help me rebuild the T-5 for my Fairmont Project. Paul has been building these transmissions for more than 30 years. He also sells the rebuild kits for these builds on his website 5Speeds.com. Not to mention he literally wrote the book on rebuilding these transmissions. Definitely the right man for the job.
There's a ton of links I need to trow at you so I'm going to keep this part of the description short.

+BiffBallbag Funny most of my gear head friends ( and I know everyone in the business ) are not Italian. I did grow up in the South Bronx and am 100% Sicilian. Good call. However we've all migrated to south Florida now.

+GearBoxVideo I used gear head as I know its the right nomenclature for a man of your talents. My family owned brooklyn and hempstead harley davidson, we're Italian's ourselves. I grew up around many NY Italian motorcycle mechanics and craftsmen, you remind me of many, many dear friends. I've migrated as far south as Atlanta, still in the motorcycle industry. IS it true that the Jew's invented south florida?

One of the things I like about these two videos is that Paul goes a little further than other videos about showing what is happening in the disassembly and more about his thoughts on why things are the way they are. He talks about what makes a bad part- a bad part as if the watcher has little experience building the transmission- which is exactly the case for me. I have now done four transmissions-all different- but go into them now with confidence that I never had before and owe it all to Paul’s videos. He doesn’t teach it like the viewer is a dunce; he teaches it like the viewer has a vested interest in the outcome. That makes these invaluable to me. I tore apart a T5 last night knowing that if I got into trouble, he would be there, and I would have full access to the information. Thank you for that-

I do know the company that makes their gears and have installed a few sets. Pretty much also like the G-Force sets. These gearsets still break and in my opinion not worth the effort or money. Just upgrade to a TKO or T56.

I'm going to have to rebuild my ranger transmission relatively soon (3rd and 4th synchros are slowly dying) and seeing all these parts are making me physically sick, like even watching this video is overwhelming. I don't really have the money to get it professionally rebuilt and I have enough mechanical knowledge to be dangerous. I'd like to have the experience of rebuilding it but I have nobody around me to teach me. Does anyone know of any book manuals or really good resources for a Mazda M5od-r1?

Great video here, it's one thing to look at a diagram and kind of assume how everything works but it's something else to have someone so qualified run you through it. Paul has a great video presence in that he not only shows everything and describes what it does as well as shortcuts for disassembly but also throws in little bits of the history and does so in a confident manner. Great video, thanks guys.

You should never use a punch to install a bearing or use a hammer on a metal shaft to knock bearing loose. The correct way is to use a pipe long enough to be above the shaft and that will fit the inner sleeve of the bearing or simply use a press. Even professionals can get it wrong. You should never take chances of destroying the bearings or other metal parts fore they are not cheap. The only time a hammer is needed is to remove pins that's it. It's good thing Eric offered a rag or he would have stuck part in vice with no protection. Thanks Eric for exposing him on his work.

To anyone without a synchronized reverse put it into any gear then into reverse, now you don't grind reverse. I put mine into 5th then reverse and it never grinds that way.

    • @e-curb
      @e-curb 5 років тому

If you have to do that, your clutch is not adjusted properly.
If you are not moving, and you pause after depressing the clutch pedal all the way, the input shaft of the g'box will be stopped, then there will be no grinding going into reverse. If yours does grind, by first putting it into 5th, the synchro of 5th will stop the input shaft. But the input shaft should not be turning in the first place!
      Adjust your clutch properly.

I might have missed it in the description; can you tell us about the yellow-tinted safety glasses Paul is wearing? I have a few pairs myself which I wear when driving at night or on cloudy days. Those look like Mossy Oak shooting glasses, which I had a pair of and lost somewheres. Thanks!

Thank you Paul! I subscribed to your channel (+followed on FB) and I plan to order the book this week because you have been so helpful in these 2 videos!
I already got my ebay T5 rebuild kit, it was delivered months ago and it has been sitting all winter. The good news is we've used this kit before in our Chumpcar racecar, so I'm not too worried. But your kit would have been so much better! Note, at the first signs of trouble I'll be ordering your kit!
    Again, thank you!

My Jeep's Peugeot 5-speed has synchronized reverse. The T-10 4-speed does not - something for me to keep in mind when driving my '69 AMX. And speaking of clutch cables, my '78 Gremlin had a cable. When all was said and done, it was too long. I finally put a 1.5" thick block of wood by the firewall where the cable passes through, then the clutch felt nice and snug with no slop.

@Ericthecarguy I know its an older video, but i wanted to say because of this video I went out last year and snagged a T5 for my build out of a scrap yard from a firebird. Rewatching it now as i'm starting to get into the rebuild portion finally. I was looking for an ID tag on it earlier to figure out what parts to order, the only tag the box had on it was a sticker that somehow survived.... that said USE DEXTRON III ATF ONLY... little food for thought in case anyone was curious. Still disappointed I couldn't find an ID TAG, gonna have to roll the dice on my master rebuild kit lol.

I have a 89, t5 from a camaro I need to overhaul. I know it needs synchros in 1-2, and reverse has issues. I'd like to get a T-56, to handle the stroker motor I want to put behind it. I also have a 5 speed I a 92chevy 1500, with a 454 I put in front of it, its a 94 model, 340 hp,450 ftlbs. I just wonder how long it can live behind that tq? When I get it going, I plan to be easy on it! But still!!! , my camaro T-5 only has 100k on it. The plot bushing was useless in the car I put it in and didn't know it. Then it got hard to down shift to 1st. So then I noticed the bushing. I guess the bearings and synchros were damaged.. Where is a good place to source the kits to overhaul a T5? I have looked at local parts stores, and prices are all over the place!!

So I'm sure everyone has the same issues with 1st and second...I've had issues under 20 thousand miles with it ..and another 2002 f150 with the same problem ,or so I think..that's why I'm watching 😅.. but this has been an issue for 100 thousand miles on the 2nd truck.. the only way it shifts in at high rpm and then it's fine for months..but shifts when off just fine I thought it was a hydraulic issue

I was wondering if he is still working on that car, maybe you could bring it into your shop and do some work on it and show us the car in more detail. I just hit the subscribe button and Im having a great time watching your videos! Keep up the great work bud!

Paul is the Man! His videos are great. He is meticulous in his builds and I like that. My question is this: I have a 92 S10 T5 with an electronic speedometer. Can I modify it to a mechanical speedometer. Are the mainshafts the same in both electronic and mechanical speedos? Plan on installing it in a 56 3100 truck. I already have purchased the jeep input shaft and cut down the bearing retainer

That 3m bristle disk is far from plastic. Its impregnated with ceramics and leaves micro bits of those ceramics behind. The green is also COARSE and has no business being used for that job. Maybe the WHITE one that is 120 grit if the case is going to be flushed afterward. That disk will scratch the hell out of that aluminum as Paul seemed to notice. Bad idea using that all around. Stick to the razor blade.

I have an Australian Ford Falcon 5.0i with a factory T5. It is a 2002 model. I have noticed the trans tunnel gets hot after driving for 20 mins. I have done two oil changes in since I bought the car 6 months ago, with no change. Gear selection is fine and no smell/smoke/grinding, although occasionally a little difficult to select reverse. Any help appreciated, thanks.

Not exactly a dynamic duo, Everytime Eric tried to read ahead And infer the next step he'd get met with a "..no" lol. I respect Paul's knowledge about tranny's I've wanted a lot of his videos in the quest to change my worn synchro. He certainly didn't seem intimidated lol, whoever said that may have had more crack than usual, so you can't blame him.
Sometimes two different personalities make for great entertainment but I'm not sure these two fit that bill.

Eric, The green 3M Bristle Disc is 50 grit with aluminum oxide abrasive mineral, it WILL remove aluminum like sand paper, ok for steel, but not for aluminum. You will see what I mean when you try to buff out the surface and the deep scratches show themselves. Other wise thumbs up to this video.
