  • The CAR WIZARD 🧙‍♂️ gets lots of cars through his shop, but not all of them make him do a double take. The Wizard would love for his '78 308GTB to look as good as this 1982 Ferrari GTSi. Why is this Ferrari in his shop and what repairs/mods would the owner like addressed?

A local guy once bought a 308 cheap at an auction that was only a few years old. It had a slight knock in the engine so nobody would touch it. He drove it several hundred miles to get home. He was smart enough to know it only needed a water pump.

Wow, this car still has the original Michelin TRX tires and wheels. I had a 1979 Mustang Cobra with these size 390 mm wheels and tires. They're now referred to as 'the Betamax of tires'. Still available at Coker, but most cars still on the road with this setup have been converted to the current standard sizes.

Don't put coolant in that white reservoir under the frunk. Its the windshield washer bottle, lol. Those 390 tires are generally only available from Coker tire. Figure about $500 a corner. Also, that oil leakage on the passenger side of the motor is often the cam seals. If you are doing belts anyway, I would change them too, but you probably already knew that.

Wow, U.S. bumper and headlight laws in the '80's really funked up some otherwise good-looking cars. That 308 has certainly been well taken care of. Little bit of leather conditioning and a full detail, and it's mint, and it sounds like the owner actually is doing his due diligence in getting everything brought back up to snuff! LOVE THE COLOR!!!! That is something different that you never see on old Ferrari's, its like "root beer brown" in one light, yet looks like "purple kool-aid" depending on the lighting. That color would look AWESOME on a 1970's/80's Lincoln, Cadillac, Buick Electra 225, Olds 98, Mercury Marquis Brougham, early-mid 70's Chrysler New Yorker/Imperial/Cordoba. Just order the matching brown leather interior on one of those barges.
Also I can see this being deaths by a thousand cuts, yeah it looks great, runs decent but has 10-20 years of deferred maintenance on it. Previous owner probably never drove it to know all the crap that was broken.

About those 220/55VR390 tires: Those were a first attempt of Michelin to make a low(er) profile tire. They were called Michelin TRX and you would only see them on higher priced cars like BMW 5, 6 and 7 series, Renault Alpine A310 and R30 GTX, Ferrari's, Citroen CX turbo, Peugeot 505 turbo and 604 GTi.
Those tires are OK but no longer cutting edge tire technology and also pretty expensive if you need a new set. Tire choice will be limited as well.

Wizard.....A few notes. Window regulators.... grease inside turns hard and makes them go very slow. You can also add a relay to improve the motor performance. Rear flashers should be outboard and brake lights inboard...his are reversed. The radiator vents are correct in body color on the 82. Its missing the spare tire well insert (big plastic insert that covers up the heater cores and brake booster/master cylinder), and missing the battery cover, spare wheel/tire, and the knob screw to hold it in place. Ditch the horse on the fuse box cover and you got an unmolested car there other than the DIN radio. Prugna is a great color. Those wheels look great, though those tires are going to be pricey! So when can I drop off my 99 355 Spider for a belt service and how much? :D

I have owned several exotics bought new. I bought a new Lambo Gallardo in 2004. $3000 yearly registration, $3000 yearly checkups, $3000 yearly insurance plus
Massive depreciation once you pass 4,000 miles, it was fun. I own a Tesla model X and 3 with old school Porsche Panamera 4S. Until you own a Tesla you never realized how much maintenance gas cars require. I bought the model X new 2017 and never been to dealership for repairs or service. That Ferrari is nice but to keep decades old cars still running if just a headache. Most shops not happy to work on dated cars. Plus specialty mechanic needed. A corvette has the same engine has every other Chevy. Anyone can work on. European high revving flat plane cranks are intoxicating, though

The rear indicator/reverse lights and tail light/brake lights are wrong way round - The rear indicators/reverse lights on all of the 308/328 GTB's and GTS' should be on the outside, and the tail lights/brake lights should be next to the rear registration plate.
(There's a myth that "back in the day", Ferrari supplied some cars to the US market with the rear indicators/reverse lights inboard, and the rear tail lights/brake lights outboard, so the tail lights marked the outer edge of the car - Not true! - All 308/328 GTB's and GTS' left the factory with the rear indicators outboard, and the tail lights inboard)

Sounds like they're replacing most of it. I wouldn't. It's only original once.

It's cool and all but that jettronic makes the already anemic engine even slower. The American fuel injected model only makes 205 horsepower compared to the 240 the carbureted models put out so you can actually get overtaken by 3.5 Altimas in your Ferrari.

Well I remember 1982!We were in a deep resession and cars ran slowly down the assembly line.At that time quality was pretty good with Chrysler probably the worst quality and Ferrari BMW Mercedes Volvo had alot of quality back then.I can't forget Datsun either.
