...and the engine is longitudal vs. transverse in 308. Actually, the 288GTO is much closer related to the F40 than the 308. The F40 is basically a ”GTO Evo”, there’s even a model in between, the GTO Evoluzione (1987) where you can trace it.
Yes the F40 was the evolution, the 288 has a 2.8 litre Rocchi 8 cylinder engine double turbo engine. I remember that calculated in German Marks in 1985 it was 400k DEM and the Porsche 959 was 450 k DEM. Niki Lauda once said he received a buying option in 1985 and sold it after in 1986 for about 250 k DEM, when Enzo died in 1988 it would have been worth a million DEM, at that time about 400k dollars or more ! ! !
Not quite. The 288 is an development of the 308. The F40 is a development of the 288. All 3 cars are related, the roof of an F40 is the same as the roof on a 308, if you park them side by side you can see the connection. The 288 evolution is not a car in it's own right but an F40 prototype. Only 4 where built.

7:00 LMAO the very first thing that comes to mind
The man watched Miami Vice and never left the 80’s.
Doc I know right? He might be my favorite Asian
My favourite car of all time. It kinda breaks my heart I'll never own or drive one but thanks David , Jay and crew for letting me have a good insight.
David Lee has to be one of my favorite guests. If you're a Ferrari person his channel is a must see.
Anyone know who's behind the wheel during the pop up headlights shot. Kinda creepy look but fits right in with the Ferrari mystique.
I always enjoy their back and forth banter.
Is this the most beautiful Ferrari ever? I'm going to say yes.
This & the 250 LM.
Agreed
I think so.
Sure.......
@@proffmongo hey what about the 330 GT navarro? 🤣
The 288 GTO is aesthetically as close to perfection as a car could possibly get. It's an absolutely stunning masterpiece. Too bad the FIA banned the Group B rally car championship. How cool it would have been to see the beautiful 288 GTO racing on the rally tracks.
Ford: NANI?! Wait a second, i thought you only do Road!
Ferrari: Yes, its unfortunate Group B was banned
Ford: .... Ya, that i can agree on
Ferrari: .... was it fun?
Ford: Fun? You call that fun?! DID YA WATCH the live footages!?
Ferrari: Yes, we're late..... hopefully someone used one for the rallying
TODAY: Yes, we are
*proportions* , that's what makes it endlessly beautiful and looking "right" from every angle.
I can't think of another car that looks so "arrogant" end "evil" but also so elegant
ilmelangolo Dodge Viper and Alfa 8C look just as good.
@@savagetuner2404 I wouldn't define the Viper "elegant" in any way. And I wouldn't define the 8C "arrogant/evil". The 288 has this special mix. Maybe some DBS from Aston Martin?
ilmelangolo ok so you obviously haven’t seen either IRL. They both share those aspects, but both are more raw than the 288. The 8C is a vicious monster.
SAVAGE TUNER Except the Viper, IMO, isn’t half as elegant as this particular Ferrari
Good to hear Jay dust off the old Viper 400hp story for us again.
I believe it’s a tradition. He has to mention it on every video he does. Haha
e also likes manual cars, and tricked his dad into ordering the hot version of the ford fairlane
Legend has it that grannies only took their vipers out on Sunday. And men were glad of it
Lmao
He’s got a few stories he mentions his favourite era of cars a lot 1967 before government regulation when a car could be designed without government interference.
I reckon a Leno drinking game. 10 vids of Leno’s garage and a shot every time he says visceral. Reckon you ll be a mess before you ve watched the 10

jay treats every car with the respect it deserves - if it be an austin mini minor or a ferrari dino - you fall in love with most of the cars - more than most of the manufacturers to can do with their multi million marketing - what a car - born out of the group b period and david lee thankyou you are a legend for sharing with us all
that paint is in such incredible shape. well done to the owner and whoever details it
Dollar bills detail this.
Make Asylums Great Again oof
14:29 spider webs and swirls. Not good detailing at all
Yeah, it just looks so...thick. So beautiful. I'd be almost (almost but not quite) afraid to drive it for fear of a rock chip.
This and the F40 are probably the best looking cars of all time for me.
One of the most beautiful car ever, just amazing 🔝
Cars like this SHOULD be driven all day because they have to be shown to people. How beautiful and sexy cars were back in the days. 👍
Nice to see a collector who is driving his collection and not hide it away from the rest of the world. 😊 Thanks.
When I was a kid I had a Burrago toy car, this one.
As I see it now, I can feel those louvres under my fingers. That sharp back end, the black front bumper.
Special car, looked good back then, even better now.
Same here mate! Mine was black though! Talking about 30 years ago! Great memories...

288 GTO is a classic. The side mirrors on the stick still look a bit weird but what a sexy machine.
What a gorgeous engine. Absolutely stunning, i love david lee. Thank you for sharing your amazing collection with jay and us.
"I sent my guy" I wish I had a guy....wait that came out wrong. LOL
I finally “Got a guy” a promotion of sorts at work. It’s nice to Have a guy especially if someone else is paying him.
You can't have a guy...you ARE the guy ;)
Hehe
Not that there is anything wrong with that....
I wish I was THE guy
The 288 GTO is my favorite mid-engined Ferrari because it's so beautiful. Thank's David Lee for sharing your car with us and Mr. Leno for putting this together. Cheers from Charlotte, NC
I think Jay’s new socks are going to be “mileage sensitive”.
SilverToy _ this guy
LOL
OMG what a great episode. The car is amazing but the banter between Jay and David is super entertaining.
Thank you Mr. Lee for sharing your beautiful GTO with us. I don't think a more alluring machine exists. Pure Italian eye candy. My favorite Ferrari of all time
I had a poster of this Ferrari on my wall when i was a kid in the 80's. Gorgeous Ferrari 288 GTO an thank for showing it Mr. Leno
The running sock 🧦 joke between these two is hilarious.🤣👍
ok i was unaware and thought it was super weird
Mr. Lee is the best "custodian" for this gorgeous automobile 🚘!!! ♡♡♡
This line: "Hey, why don't I collect the rest of the super cars...."
Like, sure, ok.
Don't you? Hah, peasant. :-D
Nice one, one of my favorite Ferraris ever!!
It's 288 because it's a 2.8l V8 (288) it's 2855cc ;)
Love the channel, cheers from Portugal!
I thought it was odd when he said it had a 2.88l and that’s why it’s the 288. As you say it’s based on engine capacity and number of cylinders.
One of the most beautiful cars ever built period exclamation point.! Soo beautiful!!!
David Lee is one of my heroes! He is so passionate about the cars and generous in sharing them with us. The shape, those lines, what a gorgeous car! Love that Jay & David shared this with us! Thank you!!!
IMO best looking Ferrari ever made.
trefod This and almost equally the 275 GTB/4
trefod I think the only car in the brand that comes close is the P80/C. What a good looking car holy cow.
I don’t think the 250 testarossa can ever be topped imo.
The polishing, detailing of this car just for this filming is fantastic, it looks so perfect, it looks like it rendered from a driving simulator.
$100,000 USD in 1985 = $240,000 USD in 2019
Relatively speaking the 288 GTO was a bargain.
and worth about 3 mil today.
it has appreciated at 10% pa, the mclaren f1 which is also ridiculous appreciated at 15% pa. but at 240k today it isnt a bargain because if that car was fresh on the market today it wouldn't sell. The countach which is basically the same in every performance dimension sold for half as much.
before you think about investments, keep in mind the running costs, maintenance costs, insurance costs, etc.
@@777lucifero I know all about that... I have a few exotics. I can't bare to put mileage (no matter how much fun they are to drive) on but if I let them sit they basically fall to pieces left a Mercy for 8 months and it cost me thousands. Won't ever do it again (fair enough excuse to use them though).
I mean not really. Compare it to a modern Corvette
David Lee is a cool guy. I love his Dino that was recently customized and resto-modded.
I've watched and rewatched these ferrari videos a dozen or so times
Thanks so much for sharing your collection with us Mr.Lee
This was always my favorite Ferrari ever!
Paul Edmonds Mine too!
Ooooh, now this is beautiful. Those seats, gated shifter yum!
Shopster Emeritus what does that even mean, have you ever driven a car with a gated shifter?
Shopster Emeritus oh so you’re a raging homosexual, gotcha. It’s 2019 keep on bud! You’ll find a man
Oh man. This car….
In my 40s now, and there is not a car that hits me so hard from a nostalgia standpoint. I leap back to when I was 10, building this Testors model car in my bedroom. At that age, being able to put your hands on the most beautiful and original car of the time…it set me up to love cars for the rest of my life.
I don’t think there will ever be a car made whose shapes, proportions, stance and emotional tension just ooze out of it. Undeniable, powerful art.
Whatever it’s valued at now, it’s worth it.
I think the F40 is an awesome car, but the 288 GTO is better looking.

The most beautiful automobile in the history of mankind. This was, is, and always will be absolute artistic perfection to my eyes and mind.
If there's a better looking one I don't know what it is.
One of the most beautiful Ferraris ever made..simply amazing.
My all time favorite! Thanks for Sharing Mr. Lee!
@4:19- LOL, yeah David, I remember 100 grand. I remember it like it never happened, because I'm a regular person.
In the context of these type of cars 100 grand is nothing today. He did say he thought it was a lot back then.
@@drunkenmasterii3250 even in this context, it's still a lot of money and the way that they were joking about 100K being nothing is an insult to the vast majority of Americans - or the world for that matter.

@@drunkenmasterii3250 passive-aggressive response? Or are you just out of touch with the average American?

I love this car. How it looks (it still looks modern), the sound...everything.
...and the engine is longitudal vs. transverse in 308.
Actually, the 288GTO is much closer related to the F40 than the 308.
The F40 is basically a ”GTO Evo”, there’s even a model in between, the GTO Evoluzione (1987) where you can trace it.
The F40 is the successor of the 288 gto. the Evo was the F40 in the making.
I think. ..
Actually saw one of those GTO Evo's at Munsterhuis in Hengelo, the Netherlands getting maintenance. They wouldn't let me in to get a photo though.
Colin Johnston Agreed, and it doesn’t really contradict anything I wrote.
Glad you keep up the show Jay.. Car guy and Ferrari guy since I was a kid.. Thank you.
The looks is a perfect mix of finesse and muscle. My favorite Ferrari since it's release. Still is.
Its one of the best looking cars ever
I remember reading about the 288 GTO in "Road & Track." I was in my first year of college. Very nice collectable Ferrari, @DavidLee.
“I like the breeze on my ankles”... the ongoing sock shtick between these two is fantastic.
I never watched a Jay video until now, and I realize this is an amazing guy, is a great person to talk about cars, thanks Doug demuro for inviting Jay, now I have a lot of car videos to watch :)

I'm so glad David Lee keeps his cars original. Such a wonderful example of Ferrari's history.
He doesn't always. He did an amazing retro mod on a Dino 246 featured on Jays show as well.
Take a drink every time Jay says "Last of the analog cars", "I'm 6 feet tall", "When I bought my Viper..."
"In 1992, they said, you will never see above 400hp, this is it"

Also when he mentions the monte carlo bar everytime a guest brings a car with strut tower brace
David Lee is my favorite guest in the show.

Very true, A genuine person that’s down to earth.
When I was a kid growing up in the 70's & 80's, this was my favorite car.
Jay: So why don't you tell me how you got this car?
Dave: Well...uh-

Ironically, being hilarious is how Jay got his car collection. All my hilarity ever got me was "In trouble".
Life is so unfair.
ZZZ😂
Surely one of the best looking cars ever made.
The view of this car from the front while in motion is just stunning
One of the most beautiful Ferraris of all. Shone brightly for a short while then the F40 arrived. Wouldn't have back then but today I would prefer the 288 GTO...much rarer & the shape seems to have aged better...
