Hey! I got that reference.. ✌🏻
I can't wait for the turbo kit......
I feel that Ferraris that age isn't for racing anymore anyway. It's something to drive and enjoy. People who don't have that Ferrari passion will never understand what it is about driving one for just the noise it produce and the smile it puts on your face even if it isn't as comfortable as a Mercedes or as reliable as a Toyota Hilux. I totally get what you are telling us Wizard. I hope you and Mrs Wizard will have years of fun with this car
So agree... the "drive and enjoy" factor is what it is all about. Really no use in using an ancient work of art like that for racing.
Many people still race these cars. They can take a lot more than you'd think.
I'm not a big Ferrari guy or Lamborghini guy but would love to drive either from this era for everything you just said. It's not really about the speed but more of the feel and sound. Exactly why I like manual transmissions, I know these new automatics are faster shifting and more efficient than I can be but it takes the fun of it away. I'm only 34 but it seems like "kids," people late teens early 20s don't understand how fun that actually is. Everything we love about cars will soon be extinct.
My dentist when I lived in LA would buy an old Ferrari, rip out the interior, throw a race cage in it, and head to the track. Some cars aren't really worth restoring, but they can still make for good track cars, plus one can sell off parts for people who want to restore something in better shape.
I believe you have to be next level rich to actually race Ferraris. Even racing Porsche requires some Tyler-level money. Guys who have a regular job race Corvettes, was my understanding.
Can only imagine how happy that car was when he found out where his new home would be homeless to spoiled rotten
like a rescue dog going to its forever home and finding all kinds of toys and a big soft bed

Car Wizard needs a Hawaiian shirt so when the build is completed he can try to pull off the peel out scene from the original Magnum PI
And a moustache!
i think he has such a shirt from one of the Car Trek shows?
He did something like that on car trek 🤣
And the shorts!
I read the reason they start peeling out in the grass was due to the bone stock motor not having enough power for a nice road burnout lol. But the grass version ended up being awesome either way.

@@magicmikethemechanic you da man. Well done
Car Wizard I'm an enthusiastic follower of your channel. I'm an old guy that appreciates someone that is passionate about doing the job RIGHT. Anyway, blah, blah, and more blah. I'm commenting to "suggest" that you and Magic Mike might want to consider mounting your NEW electronic distributor system on a HEAT SINK, and NOT directly to a "CARPETED" surface (it's like wrapping it in a blanket . . . almost). I used to work on cars when I was younger (I could easily be your dad), but you're the expert there. But I did spend 50 years in the electronic/computer world, and it's no secret that the number one electronics "killer" is heat (I suspect you already know that). And to mount your new "system" to a carpeted "wall", inside a closed-up "box" is, IMHO, looking for trouble. You might want to consider mounting it to an aluminum heat sink with some stand-offs (1 inch would do) from the wall, and if you want to go the extra mile, you might want to include a 12v fan for airflow ventilation. Just a comment . . . Anyway, love watching you and your staff (and beautiful bride) tackle all the quirky projects that roll into your shop. Good luck and keep up the good work!!!
I was seeing the same thing with the horizontal mount on the heat sink fins as problematic but i'm not sure if there's crazy airflow through that space
Yeah was thinking that. Those components are going to get warm, I, like you, would stand them off of the carpet.
This is excellent advice. It is absolutely true that heat kills electronics. Fred
Read the manual - it’s installed exactly as recommended - on the firewall of the passenger compartment. It’s unlikely to get that hot given its a bunch of solid state switches and not like a linear audio amplifier.
I appreciate your videography style, especially for this particular car. I’m tired of videos with excessive slow-mo camera panning and gratuitous grinder sparks. Your directness and detail is refreshing. Don’t ever change and I hope that car brings as much joy as your videos bring to us. Thanks.
I totally choke-laughed when Wizard said riptide blue 🤣

Magic Mike did a beautiful job with that wiring. Nice work!
Hey Car Wizard, I have a suggestion for a "Buy This, Not That" video. Could you do one on cars to teach someone to drive stick in? Not just cars that have a light clutch and good shift action, but also cars that a mechanic can do a clutch replacement on cheaply, in case the learner burns up the clutch. Manual transmissions (and people who can operate them) are becoming less and less common, so a video like this might prompt some people to give it a try. Thanks to you and Mrs. Wizard for all the work you've put into your videos!
Personally, I think the Honda Fit is #1, being super fun to shift and having a minimal learning curve.
I would say Ford ranger easy to use clutch and easy to replace
VW bug
Fox body mustang
Toyota Yaris
Making an old classic car enjoyable by replacing stock old parts that never worked well to me is part of being a true car enthusiast. If you are keeping your car completely stock, you most likely are not enjoying that car the way it was meant to be enjoyed. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but don't give people a hard time for replacing old busted non-working parts with newer systems that allow them to really enjoy the car in every sense of how it was meant to be enjoyed. @CarWizard, you are doing it right.
...only a total and complete idiot would NOT change out stock parts that are KNOWN to be problematic out with stuff that WORKS.
The only exception is, of course, a REAL 'show car' of historical significance
Wizard, just a suggestion here on the carb setup, keep in mind the bigger camshafts will draw less vacuum, and you may find the need to up the jetting a couple steps to keep the A/F happy. Maybe a temporary A/F gauge would be handy here just to make sure this cars tune is as perfect as can be! Can’t wait to see this car rolling down the road, hopefully in person if you ever roll through Arkansas! :)
The more you talk about how this car was set up, the more I'm inclined to believe that somebody purpose-built this car with Cannonball aspirations
I dont think so. Its too high visability and does not have a way to do a 70 gallon fuel tank. Just not likely based on what i understand people were using.
@@cayman9873 Many cannonballers egos are higher on the priority list than logistics, especially back in the 80's. The only logistical efforts were making sure they had enough blow to make the trip.

The man with the rubber hose and the screwdriver.
Wizard just makes me happy. Love all the videos.
Wizard I am really enjoying this series and am glad to see you bringing life back into this beautiful car.
The Wizard is exactly correct! and I think just as he does! why race the car? it only destroys the engine, pressing down on the pedal once in a while for some spirited driving is all you need to do to enjoy the cars engine, and the mechanical symphony of a well tuned motor! now that's enjoyment!
Some people like to race, to each their own! I wouldn't say one way of driving is more correct than the other. Drive your own car how you like! :)
Driving flat out most definitely does NOT destroy a Ferrari engine! They are designed to be driven flat out after all -- as are all production engines, the durability program during R & D involves running the engines at full throttle for days on end.
Kudos to the Mrs Wizard for the graphics edit at 0:49!
I just saw a video this morning on another 308 and it's carburetor set up. Search for "What Does UK's Top Expert Think Of My Cheap Ferrari 308" for some tips on how to dial in your carbs.
It turned out that the Idle Mixture has a huge impact on the part throttle drivability. It would buck and miss and spit and sputter until the Idle Mixture was sorted. Also, you want to target a 900 RPM Idle to keep the Cams oiled.
One of The Reasons Why I Come To This Channel Is To See Wizard Explaining Everything So Calmly...! ❤️
Those 8 downdraft Weber carburetors are gonna sound amazing at full song!
Just four double barrel carburetors.
Just an idea to make it look more period correct.
A rubber grommet for each sparkplug wire and a alloy box top to cover the coils. Keep up the good work.
"Spirited driving", I like that!! Have to admit, I'm liking this car more and more. Bravo for going distributor-less!! Enjoy the car, don't spend hours a week dialing in the points. Maybe start thinking about a bit more camera time for Magic Mike; he seems to be a great all-around guy! We know he's smart, show us how much!

@@jeffreyrwilliams9345 just a little mild kidding of course. I too have watched Jack in UK and the misery he continues to have with the 308 and it's intermittent running problem. I've commented for at least 6-8 months that Jack is doing things exactly wrong. Jack continues to monkey with carbs when he should first check/adjust valves, second check the ignition system, and then and only then touch the carbs. Jack's misery with his 308 will continue.

So it's only 10% out
Tyrell has years of experience. The rest of us need the gauge
Does that make Mr Tyrrell the Wizard’s wizard?
wizard see if there is someone who can 3d print the air cleaner
Great call Scooby Doo!
Jay Leno could....
they would need a very large table'd printer, because it's a single cleaner that sits over all 4 carbs, sort of like the old dodge 6 pack air cleaners. and you'd have to find filament that can handle high heat, because it prints with heat like a hot glue gun. if the temps are too hot, itll just melt the material
@@ghomerhust I think you’re confusing the pre-cured melting temps vs the cured melting temps. Some 3D materials are indeed capable of very high heat applications once they are cured.
@@piezoman79 I've seen 3d printed intake manifolds for the bmw s52.
Please do a "before and after" for this car. I'm so happy you're giving this thing a proper fixing and restoration. I hope you and Mrs Wizard enjoy this car for many years.
Love that CW doesn't want to twin turbo everything... just making it work with good solutions, not always original. love it

Loving this restoration. Good on you Wizard.
As wizard said I hope the fuel doesnt vapor lock or degrade performance sucking in all that hot under hood air into the intake, might be why Ferrari had a cold air intake setup like many cars do for the same reason. Ive always loved the sound of carb intake noise, one of the meanest sounding carbs is the old Rochester Quadrajet when those massive back barrels open on a big block it sounds amazing.

Very nice, neat, and factory looking installation, Wizard!! Kudos to Magic Mike!!
THAT MAGIC MIKE MUST REALLY KNOW HIS STUFF, I AM SURE HE IS WELL COMPENSATED FOR HIS SKILL..... JUST SAYIN
He should call himself "Car Magi"
That Ferrari badge on his shirt says it all and isn’t cheap!
You must have someone who can weld aluminium there.
Fabricate your own airbox with intake to the the cold air scoop
I'd leave the filters there and build it around them so you can run the pipping to the scoop and make it with a removable lid to access.
Oh and setup.
ua-cam.com/video/cBHSAPHvNtM/v-deo.html
Not a bad idea - however if you could find a square filter element big enough to fit around all the carbs and build an air box out of sheet metal - you could do a simple bend up combined with rivets to to make a "Wizard" induction system. No welding required. Airplanes are made that way as welding can introduce micro cracks that will grow. You could use PVC for the ducting because cold air will help the cause.
Enjoying your Ferrari series very much, thanks.
Its really awesome to see that you went through this car and getting it back to a good condition.
All he needs now is a Hawaiin shirt, two Dobermans, and some short shorts to become "Car Wizard P.I."

Watching the development of this car, had been awesome. I have recommended this to many of my friends.
Hi Wizard - I have tuned these cars and many many others with Webers - you will find that the stock airbox config provides for a very noticeable difference of the Webers operation in hot climates (USA mid-west summers) as compared to having just the K&N type filters. I have fabricated airboxes in the past for similar installations that really helped draw in the outside (colder air under motion) air to the carbs... just an "old-hand tuner from way back when" opinion. Good luck and keep the vids coming - nice to see the old cars. A side note: I used to remove distributors and install Ford EDIS systems on many Brit engines but use the flywheel (install tiny bolts for the sensor notches) for the crank-timing pick up as opposed to the crank pulley - that was many years back and worked as smooth as silk.. look up Megajolt Lite, he does something similar and cheap.
