  • When it comes to engraving stainless steel mugs on a CO2 laser, there's one major difference from anodized mugs. Stainless steel material needs a special marking spray to bond to stainless steel for the engraving. Without this spray, the engraving would not be possible on a CO2 laser. If you have any questions, feel free to comment them below.

    Hey Trevor, thanks for the video. Quick Question about the center-center approach.
    Does it matter where you place the graphic on the canvas (from top of tumbler or below .etc) if you are going to use the center-center setting?
    I mean if you just made a canvas (or artboard) with the exact size of the graphic itself but not the tumbler. and run a center-center engrave on exactly where the red-dot pointer is. won't that have the same positioning effect?

    • @MakerExperiment
      @MakerExperiment  3 роки тому +1

      Yup. When I do that in videos it tends to throw people off. You just need to make sure the tumbler rotates the proper amount. I haven’t tested it with a rotary so I’m not sure if you have to at least have the right art board height or not. It would be a good test.

    • @iaincampbell3119
      @iaincampbell3119 3 роки тому +1

      You'll need to make sure the height of your artboard is the size of the circumference because that tells the rotary tool how fast to turn the motor.

    • @MakerExperiment
      @MakerExperiment  2 роки тому

      The spray I use is for uncoated metals like this stainless mug. It has a chemical reaction and adheres to the mug chemically creating a black layer.
      For powder coated mugs it engraved through the powder coat layer. The powder coat is easier to work with but settings may have to change based on color of the powder coating.

    Hey nice vid. I was ordering a muffler and they were going to laser engrave it for me with my logo. I was wanting a more bronze look instead of very black like what is on your mug. • @MakerExperiment
      @MakerExperiment  Рік тому

      It’s mostly dependent on the type of machine. To get coloration on metal they will most likely have to use a fiber laser. This is a bonding spray that reacts with CO2 lasers which is different.

    Why do you say it is "Permanent" when it is not! It you had used a Fiber Laser, it would be smooth and PERMANENT, plus you would not have to go thru all the prep (spray, clean, etc.) to make the engraving adhere, the fiber laser does all that for you. There is a layer (the spray) between the actual engrave and the stainless steel tumbler.

      It is supposed to be permanent if done correctly. In order to use a fiber laser I’d have to own one. I don’t know about you but I don’t have access to one and many others don’t either. The spray is a good alternative for those that only have a CO2 laser.

      @@MakerExperiment as someone who owns a fiber & CO2 laser dual source laser....I know from experience that a fiber engraver is superior to using a spray to "engrave" on stainless steel. The fiber laser extracts the carbon from the steel to make the true black & smooth engrave that is permanent! Anyone who is using the spray to make a black "engrave" claiming it is permanent is lying, because it is not permanent, there is a layer of that spray between the stainless steel and the engraving. That's why there is a build up on the engraved area.

      @@jhnmrkb I agree that a fiber laser is superior in this usage. Not everyone has one. Because it is a coating at some point it will most likely deteriorate, so you’re correct that “permanent” may not be the right word. Most people will have that engraving for the life of the object if they hand wash it. People who machine wash it may not. At the end of the day a fiber laser is a better option, but not always affordable for everyone.

      Because it’s not going anywhere. I’ve put sandpaper to it and not even a smudge

    This isn't engraving anything

      Technically it’s laser marking. Most people don’t search for that wording.
