Incredibly entertaining TAS, I never once considered that you could land on a target without deploying the ball wings, but to see that doing so still allows you to walk around on them was insane!
First time my brother and I ever played this, we didn't think to press "A", so we just kept running off the end of the ramp to our doom, wondering how we were supposed to get to any of the targets with a ball. I see now we had the right idea all along.
I wonder how many people would be surprised to hear that round 3 was actually more challenging to make than rounds 1 or 4? Banana & wind RNG + Difficult flight + Speed preservation. Round 3 had it out for me 0_0
I didn't even know that you could roll casually on the targets, if you can miraculously reach it! That is the coolest tidbit I've ever seen, for this series!
04:08 & 11:07 My favorite parts where Gongon looks so dead after all the shenanigans from Rounds 1 & 4 with the announcer saying "excellent" and the triumphant music playing.
The ammount of detail they put into this game is astounding. The fact they put bananas on the ramps makes me wonder if they also indended the single bananas on the targets to be collected by swooping down and grabbing them. Its only through this perfected form of play could I finally see the full scope of the what the people designing monkey flight were going for.
this deserves to get a boom in attention, it's a fantastic high score tas that gives surprise after surprise with how much you can take advantage of smb's physics
The moment I discovered the bomb hits sent the ball flying into the air, I went into a similar hysterical laughing fit xD It’s SO silly that they actually function that way even before the ball’s wings have been closed
I'm pretty sure this might be THE most magical TAS the concept of gaming could possibly offer. I do not want to know all the drugs you used to allow your brain to think up this routing, let alone perform it in an actual run.
As for “thinking up the routing”, this whole thing happened just because I had the funny idea to reach the targets without opening wings. I could’ve never guessed the bombs would allow for literally every bunch to be collected, I didnt even know they affected ball-rolling gameplay at all! It made me jump the first time one exploded and i went flying into the air 0_0
Absolutely jaw-dropping. I never knew that if you had enough speed to reach the target without flying you could still roll around. It makes sense, though. Very entertaining TAS :)
The first time he turned back to hit the ramp a second time I started laughing, wild strategy. Haven't played this game in years but i've played enough to know i'd be playing with a god if he doubled back on the start ramp mid-run.
person who has no access to the internet but goes to their arcade to play monkey ball every week going on the internet for the first time and searching "monkey ball" and discovering the existence of gongon and is having a breakthrough cue that one gif of the glasses guy's mind exploding in space
That's actually the post-bomb animation, Gon Gon is stuck in that animation because we've hit the bombs but the game never expected us to do that before opening the wings. It's the same reason the ball spins out and loses all its speed when we finally do open the wings later in that round, cuz the ball is set to a spin-out state when we hit the bombs but the spin out can't happen while the wings arent open :0
I never would have thought that people optimise the Monkey Target game, but DAMNNNNNN GON GON PLAYS A GOOD MONKEY TARGET (seriously, what the... i could barely even land on the targets lol)
The reason I was able to scoot around on the stages was because Monkey Target goes through 3 modes in sequence: Rolling, Flying, then Dropping. The normal “dropping” state after u close ur wings gives u no control over the ball, and ends the round by collecting points on whatever target ur on (including the starting ramp, which gives u 1 point while saying “oh no!”) Because I was able to use janky ramp collision to reach the first target on rounds 1 and 4 without opening wings, I never needed to enter the “Drop” state where u lose control of the ball, so I could roll around collecting bananas as much as i pleased. The bombs ended up being an unexpected ally for being able to get as many bunches as possible before opening the ball’s wings, since they could boost my height by a ton without any flying needed.
The other non-obvious thing at play during rounds 3 and 5 in particular is banana-RNG. The bananas in Monkey Target are randomly generated, so both their amount and position will change depending on which frame u pressed A to move on from the previous round. This meant for the stages where I needed to get lots of fly-by singles, I needed to use savestates to keep re-rolling the RNG for those rounds by pressing A at slightly different times until I got bananas in a clean line that i could fly through, plus wind that points in a helpful direction (the wind direction + strength is determined by the same RNG). This was particularly obnoxious on Round 3, where I needed to get at least 9 fly-by singles to reach the next x3-multiplier on the powerup list. Every time I got a layout with lines of 3 on each target, I never had enough speed to get that final bunch. It was only once I lucked out with that insane line of 6 fly-by bananas on the first target where I was able to skip target 2 and BARELY have enough speed to get the final bunch with all 9 fly-by singles i wanted. This combination of precise flying and obnoxious RNG made round 3 harder the hardest in the tas, Im glad that map only shows up once ‘^-^
@@QueenOfPessimism According to my input recording file, just over 27,600. The real number may be a little bit higher because of going back to an old input recording when having to re-do a round at some point, but it's a good estimate of ~30,000.
I came here to brag that I have on atleast 10 times playing against my cousins and brother we hit a 500 with 3x. I thought the TAS would do this but im like 2 mins in and this dudes not even opened the damn ball😂 Anyone else do the 3X 500 landing?
The current score record for 5-round actually hits the x3 500 landing at every round where that powerup is available, it's a really fun challenge :D ua-cam.com/video/htehd9AigXw/v-deo.html
Did not know something like this existed. That being said I am fully ready to enjoy the next 13 and a half minutes of my life watching this Ok I posted that before watching the video obviously and now that I'm even partway through I'm immediately blown away
I didnt keep track of hours, but it took a lot of work over the course of about a week. The TAS file has 27,600 re-records (AKA # of times i loaded a savestate)
You lose control of the ball after closing the wings, so once the ball stops rolling if it lands on the ramp the game awards literally 1 point and says "Oh no!" as a little easter egg :0
For bombs, I just went with what I was given, but the banana counts on rounds 1 and 4 needed to be high enough for me to reach the next powerup cycle, so I did use RNG manip for that! (As well as for banana positions on all the other rounds, for workable flight patterns)
To be honest, my original idea was just to reach the targets, get like a few singles, and then open wings to get like 10 more bunches. I did NOT expect the bombs to actually shoot the ball into the air, allowing for literally every banana to be collected on rounds 1 and 4 0_0
I believe that is a feature unique to Monkey Target 2 (the version in SMB2) which has a much different scoring system. Would be neat to see a TAS with it tho, just not sure if I’d be the one to do it :P
Because of how bounce restitution works in Monkey Ball, chaining infinite height off consecutive bomb bounces unfortunately doesnt seem possible. However, in Round 4 I got a looot of height from hitting 3 bombs that happened to spawn close together. Makes me also wonder how much height u would get from hitting 4 bombs at once from high up. I know distance-wise Monkey Target does have an invisible barrier, but I have no clue if there's an invisible barrier for height too 0_0
is there anyway you can explain how you get back onto the starting platform without opening? or can you post a video with a stick input on the screen? would be very helpful, trying to get 10k!
Assuming ur talking about the hit at 0:35, that was some very lucky collision I only ever saw at high speeds on certain spots on the ramp. I dont have any way to reupload this with input display, cuz smb1 doesnt have any mods that easily show stick inputs when playing back a TAS file. If u really need it for something, i could try sending u the TAS file itself, but idk how useful having that would be. (Also that file is pretty large)
Also are u trying to get 10k on the 10-round version? Cuz if so, u definitely dont need that jank beginning hit or any of this TAS movement to do that. If u get 5 bunches on each round and land the 500-pt buoy it should total out to 14900 iirc (15k exactly if u dont use the singles on the starting ramp and only collect bunches)
Pretty much exactly correct. The only reason I was able to use the bombs in rounds 1 and 4 is because the targets are JUST close enough to the start ramp to be able to make the distance without entering flight mode. Since the targets are much further on the other 2 maps, I had to opt for optimizing the flight patterns (which actually proved to be just as hard as the more flashy-looking bomb shenanigans, especially on round 3!)
10/10 loved the bit where the monkey hit the target
I liked that part too :]
"Just land on the platform!"
"We're not aiming for the platform!"
"The bananas are too tasty!" :]

There's banana's under the ramp? Thar means the expected someone to do some of this craziness. Really great work!
Aha, so that's how you get the bunches below the ramp, noted
Also, walking on the targets feels so wrong lmao, nutty TAS
easily the most fun ive had watching a monkey ball tas!
Holy cow, that was so much cooler than I expected. Mind blowing.
