Alot of the stage shortcuts were things I literally did as an 10 yo. Others I struggle to wrap my head around as an adult.
There is a Super Monkey Ball (don't remember precisely which game) tool-assisted speedrun on this channel somewhere. I think it was in one of the events from last year. Sorry for being so vague but if you search the channel videos you'll find it.. I think you'll like it

this game is probably the closest I’ve ever gotten to speedrunning, something about blitzing through (blitzing relative to my at the time 10 year old mind), was so satisfying

This is incredible. Can someone explain how the pause strat works like I’m five? I get using it to line up with moving platforms, but I can’t wrap my brain around how it helps you clip over walls or skip through stages.
What it does is it allows you to hit the exact same angles at the exact same times to make things more consistent. So say you needed to hold up until a specific time, then hold right 1 frame later, that's not something you can physically do. What you can do instead is pause on the last frame you need to hold up for, then hold right during the pause menu and unpause. This isn't done all the time because it takes a lot of time irl to get the pauses even close to consistent, but it basically allows you to do things only a robot could feasibly do.
