Star Control II was the best game of 1992 for me and remains one of my favourite of all-time. Ultima VII and Dune II were not far behind. All three captured my imagination as a 7 year-old and pushed the limits of gameplay at the time. What a great year for classic DOS games!

Star Control 2 while i got a bit late to the PC party, was one of the first games I payed when I moved from the Amiga. And yeah, 1992 was pretty good.

DOS definitely getting on top now. Even the fact that they finally got Dungeon Master in this year demonstrates that no-one could ignore the PC games market anymore.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  Рік тому +1

Yep, and while the Dungeon Master might have been a bit late to the party DOS was not only not going anywhere, it was in the very forefront of gaming and it stayed there pretty much until Windows took over. Sure, there were some consoles trying to pick from it along the way but there were just too many PCs worldwide by then for them to even have a fighting chance.

Thank you! And yeah, 1992 was better than I expected it to be. Some real bangers released and they finally looked great. Didn't sound as good as Amiga yet (it's best compared with Moonstone's intro on both platforms) but that would change in couple of years too.

@@johnziggiridis3168 Apparently there's new Indy in the making and even Harrison Ford is going to play "some" role in it. I'm not one to fear change, meaning I don't mind creative freedoms for the story but I'm not sure that they'll be able to pull it off so many years later without doing some kind of a reboot.
I'm from Poland. And while we used to get snow yearly, it's not a given anymore because of the climate change. So now you never know. We may very well get just a few days more as much as a whole snowy winter or no snow at all. It's a weather roulette here! ;)

These games were apart of my first formative years. It's frightening how much i've forgotten, so thanks once again for the trip down memory lane.
Certainly feel you've got your video/audio editing to a high standard now. And oh boy, poor you for 1993! Don't go burning yourself out my dude, your videos are very entertaining, it's always a pleasure to watch a new release.

Thanks a lot! I'm always trying to do a bit better with each video. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but it's this trial and error that will hopefully one day end up with a truly polished release.
1993 will be a really special video... I've started with around 150 titles and got it down to around 90. It took me another few days of research to get it to 71. And I'm happy with what I ended up with. I shouldn't lose any more than extra 3-4 if any. But it will be easily way over an hour long video. I could split it in two but I don't wanna break the formula mid-series. That said, I worry that latter years may be even tougher to reduce in their number of games... Oh, well, I suppose that's a problem for the future. :)

And Star Trek is a subject that I kinda fear of touching on video as I may go overboard and just talk about it for way longer than I should've. I don't exactly understand why we're so confrontational and obsessed with feeling of power as species. If we were to cooperate and forgo the divisions of race, religion and nationality and just Earthlings together we could achieve much more. If all that creativity and invention that we're capable of would be redirected from warfare and arms race into bettering our collective lives. And no, I'm not a s*cialist or c*mmunist and don't subscribe to their notions even though I heard people comparing Star Trek's philosophy to these ideals. They are inherently wrong. Darn it! And then I'd limit politician's max earning to 3 times the average salary so that they would start working for us and not themself. That would obviously have to come with complete transparency of their assets and wealth but I feel that could discourage them from taking bribes. And if all that would be in place, complete shift of focus from arms to eradicating hunger and poverty. Then split between general scientific progress and huge investments in medicine. We really should've rid World of cancer years ago. After that, let's look outwards - current space programs are not bad, but they could be better... And I'm on a rant again. xD

Yeah, by 1992 I was still using Amiga too. As a matter of fact, most of the games in this video I either played on Amiga first or couple of years later when they were not new anymore. MT-32 is something I was always interested in, especially cause it offered super high quality alternative to midi. Which I always thought of being an interesting format seriously crippled by the lack of proper hardware implementation that could use real life samples of instruments to simulate orchestral music in games...

Is it wrong that I still like The Oregon Trail, including deluxe?
Indiana Jones & the fate of Atlantis is a true classic so is, Titus the Fox & Star Trek 25th Anniversary are “must play” games.
Locomotion looks childish but it’s so much fun & I can say exactly the same of Gear Works.
UGH! Is unique & deserves to be better known.
Why do you want to start a flame war with the Dune II crowd? 😄
The Koshan Conspiracy is not 1 I know? I must check it out, same for Darklands.
Oh dear, I hate to “um actually” but Hovertank 3D came before Wolfenstein 3D but was not well known, so Wolfenstein gets the credit for being ground braking in it’s time but simplistic by modern standards. Still fun though & you get to fight minigun-mech Hitler at the end.
I’ve played Bomber man on many, many platforms but never PC?
Alone in the dark was technically amazing in it’s day & really made 3D survival horror a thing but it’s ugly & the controls are clumsy & slow by modern standards. I still have it on original CD though. Still have Lure of the Temptress too.
I like your original Moonstone video, you introduced me to it. Same for Pushover.
So disappointed “Squakmonster” wasn’t your ship in 1869. 😄
I’m still traumatised by the ending to Monkey Island 2, thank goodness 3 came out.
I like the pace of TMNT The Arcade Game but I do understand what you’re saying about game play & the PC version isn’t the best.
Formula 1 Grand Prix was super impressive for it’s time, if you had a PC that could do it justice. Honestly I know what you mean about sports, I get taking part, that makes sense but I don’t get watching other people take part when you’re not?
Great video again. That’s a lot of games but you kept it consistent all the way through, thanks.

I love Oregon Trail too. I mean deluxe more than the basic, first version. And it's no secret that I'm not American, so I had no access to it when in school and only ever played it as a grown up. It may not be the most sophisticated game but it has this enchanting charm to it and it's by all accounts definitely a rogue-lite game. And I like those.
I really like Locomotion but it gets a bit too hectic for me at a certain point and from then onward it's just frustrating. But it's more of an issue of me than the game. Gear Works relaxes me. Don't know why.
To be fair to Dune, later Dune 2000 was much more improved while staying very faithful to the original and if I had to I would recommend that as the first Dune RTS for anyone interested in playing it. And yeah, sometimes I just can't help myself and I gotta say what I feel even if it's not popular. For instance Heroes of Might and Magic 2 The Succession Wars in my opinion is heaps better than Heroes of Might and Magic 3. Especially while playing a custom "Gyros Too!" map. Also, if you ever get a chance I recommend that map wholeheartedly, especially if you have someone to play it with. That single map alone can provide days if not weeks of fun.
It's always fun to consider existence of mecha-hitler (yes, small letter is intentional) and yep, you're right. Technically speaking Wolf3D was not first. But could we perhaps land on it being first "modern" FPS? Having near everything that games in the genre have to this day. :)
Darklands is very obscure as it's German and was not pushed heavily outside of the region. Which is pity but on the other hand perhaps many PCs were saved cause of it. ;) And yeah, it's a game most don't heard about and it has many of the mechanics and ideas that were not seen in gaming for many more years since its release. It's definitely worth a look if you have time on your hands.
Oh, the latest Monkey Island actually came out in Game Pass recently and I'm looking forward to attempting beating it this coming holiday season. I'm taking a week off of work, so if I manage to put enough work into videos I should have 3-4 days free to do just that. :)
Sports... My point exactly. If I play (anything) I'll do my best. But if I'm to watch it, I'd rather grab a nap or do basically anything else. I mean, there's an exception, I can bare it socially with friends but I try to avoid it if I can. Well, come to think of it, I may have lied here. I don't mind watching poker as I love the game. But is it a sport per se?
Thanks for as usual being the very first to watch and comment! I do enjoy our little convos here and while I plan to see Japan first within the next 24 months (I know, it's a long time ahead but it's costly and, well, work, and stuff...) but then I hope to go to US within the next 24, and I believe you're American, so if I do, I hope you'd be up for a drink and a chat in person?

      Great work as usual!
I can't wait to see if you enjoyed epic in my eyes (or ears) opening theme from Frontier: Elite 2 from 1993.

Ultima VII: The Black Gate is only Ultima VII: Part 1 in retrospect. Serpent Isle is much more of an expansion pack (even if it is not the literal expansion, Forge of Virtue). Serpent Isle throws away many of the things that Black Gate did and uses the engine in a different way. Serpent Isle is linear; It can't have the Magic Carpet because the world is not open.
You call Ultima VII the first for many things, but it's more like the last. Every remaining game, including Serpent Isle, takes away things that made Ultima what it was. Nothing in the story past Black Gate is worth following; it's like the last good season of a TV show before it goes off the rails. The closest Ultima in gameplay to Black Gate is Ultima Online, for all it's faults and despite being online because at least it's open.

      All excellent points.
But don't you finish the show that you loved when it started just to have a closure?

@@OldAndNewVideoGames Let's be real, I'm just a very grumpy old man. There was so much I wanted after Ultima VII that I didn't get. I didn't hate Serpent Isle, but it didn't really work right, and then the story was off the rails in 8 and 9 - I couldn't finish it (and not just because it wasn't possible to finish it out of the box).
Because of experiences like this I've reached a point where I no longer need to finish a series when I don't feel like I'm getting what I want anymore. Sometimes it's better to imagine what it could have been.

@@kyleolson8977 I get that. I wish there would be Matrix follow ups but they never made those... ;)
