Too many of my favourite games require keyboard, although I did manage to redefine the keys on Starglider to use two joysticks via a multiport interface, throttle and missiles on one joystick, and direction and laser on the other. Thank the maker for the suckers on the bottom of a Quickshot II! I can't remember if these are playable with joystick only, but some games I might add include Cyclone, Xeno, West Bank, Carrier Command, WEC Le Mans, Target Renegade, Passing Shot, Nether Earth, Space Crusade and Chaos
As is usually the way, I come up with another list of games that I couldn't be without... Shoot-em-ups including Silkworm, White Heat, a run and jump shoot-em-up called Astro Marine Corps, rich with big colour graphics, and a game I preferred to Turrican, arcade fun in Pacmania and Power Drift, platform adventurers Dan Dare and Switchblade, cover tape puzzler Flashpoint, and Rescue-em-up puzzler Intensity, and the "I can't believe a Speccy did this game', Stunt Car Racer.
That's why I've been concerned about joysticks. Some games just won't work with keys. And playing a distance away from the Speccy parked under the gogglebox, will require a usb dongle, or Bluetooth for keyboard joypad support. Hoping keys can be remapped.
Hi Cant wait for mine . when i was younger my DAD , Purchased a Spectrum but he didnt like keyboard., and all me mates had a Spectrum .. But I ended up with a Dragon 32👍
@@SebsPlaceYT nice, I was so happy when I found my +2 had a copy with it when I got it as a kid , got the ys issue with Nemesis on cover framed on wall
That Indiana Jones YS from 1989 was the one that featured the game you absolutely forgot to mention in your list of 10 which was of course Advanced Lawnmower Simulator (which I believe Microsoft purchased and is now available on Steam - or some such simulator anyway, may not be lawnmowers anymore - they could possibly have changed focus from lawnmowers to something else)
I might actually get one of these even though it's almost completely pointless when you have a PC... First games I'd delve into would probably be: Renegade Target Renegade Roller Coaster Dan Dare (Bit of an eclectic mix there i know)
Good mix - thanks! Loads have said Target Renegade but it's already on the device. A few have said Roller Coaster, which I'm not sure I've played but it's not available to download safely annoyingly!! I'm going to seek it out though, cheers.
Some great games there. The only worry I have with waggle the joystick until you destroy it and get blisters on your hand the size of Ben Nevis is the new joystick how strong are they and if they are durable then there are some great event collections as you said Daley Thompson, then there is epyx games, also I seem to remember Geoff capes strongman but I can't remember if it was a speccy game, and there are more but I was made to stop playing them as the amount of joysticks me and my mates destroyed. Then there should be Chuckie Egg absolute classic. There are some of codemasters early stuff BMX Simulator comes to mind or the Dizzy games. Of course there is the funny Rock Star Ate my Hamster. There is a game and I can't really remember it but you went round on a bike the character was maybe Colin and there was KP Skips in it we played that alot. Spitting Image was ok sort of for a 1v1 fighting game. Also there was a few British TV licenced games which I would like to play again. Maybe you could do a video on 1 games from every developer well maybe not all. Anyway great video and everyone should be calling it the Retro Spectro
Great comment thanks! Check out the 2nd video of games that people mentioned in the comments. Quite a few you mentioned are in it. The Colkn game was Clumsy Colin. Cheers!
Personally, I would include: Codename MAT Battle of Britain by Microgame Simulations Tomahawk by Digital Integration Elite by Firebird, Bomb Jack Valhalla by Legend TimeGate by Quick Silver or Ant Attack by Sandy White Bosconian by Mastertronic Yes Prime Minister Seiddab Attack by Hewson. Not all of these are joystick only. Sometimes the keyboard is much more fun for cerebral games and simulations.
My list: Saboteur II Terramex Robocop Action Force II Chase HQ Xevious Target Renegade Livingstone I presume Flying Shark Viking Raiders And if Icould add more Cybernoid I and II Saboteur Mário Bros Express Raider Green Beret Dan Dare ( all of them) Thanatos Renegade Commando Tour de Force Marauder Battle Valley Operation Wolf Cheers
Spectro Retro!? Obviously it ought to be called the Rectum Spectrum. The Pyramid reminded me the guy used to send out newsletters to customers detailing what was coming etc. They were a fun read until the last one when he said he was stopping as there just wasn't any money to be made anymore 😞 I wonder what happened to him?
The Pyramid. Get in lol. For my new C64 my parents got me a bunch of budget games and this was one. I loved it as the aliens took on cool appearances. I wanted to get further to see the new .characters.😂
Limiting to joystick-playable and freely available games limits my choices by a fair bit, but I'm going with: 1. Tintin on the Moon 2. Destructo 3. Lords of Chaos 4. Fantasy World Dizzy (would be Magicland but it's not available) 5. Deathchase 6. Maziacs 7. Zoids: The Battle Begins 8. Equinox 9. DRIFT! 10. Travel Through Time Vol. 1 No, it doesn't hit the full list of genres. No, I don't care.
😂 thank you for having a good crack at it and more importantly being the first person to mention Dizzy which I feel has to have a game shoe horned in somewhere. Thank you, I'll add these to my list for part 2!
Everyones list will be slightly different and none are wrong.. but here is mine anyway haha.. 1, RPG - Hero quest 2, ARCADE CONV - Agreed. Mikie (Bomb jack a DAM close second though) 3, SMUP - R-Type (yes there are better ones but this one was what i played the most) 4, 2 PLAYER - Bubble Bobble.. (again.. better.. but me and my mates played this to death) 5, SPACE SHOOTER - Elite of course! (Or Codename MAT.. LOVED that too) 6, RACING - Agreed.. Deathchase (although Chase HQ would be a VERY close second) 7, PUZZLE - Puzznic.. (Did not go in for puzzle games.. i was 12 and just wanted to kill things haha) 8, SPORTS - Agreed Hypersports 9, PLATFORMER - Chuckie egg.. (Again.. not the best but so simple and my all time fave) 10, COVER EXCLUSIVE - No idea as i never knew what games were non released cover tape only games.. lol
Not many complains about that rubbish rubber keyboard they decided to remake instead of replacing the membrane with a micro switches board, it will added 20 EUR to the price but finally you have a usable keyboard with a clicky sound ! I didn't knew The Pyramid, nice Jetpack spin. It seems that Jetpack inspired few of your excellent game selection ;) Yeah! Bruce Lee, the first game I completed too!
@@SebsPlaceYT The list will be too long but here are few of them: Chuckie Egg, Jetpack, Psst, Coockie, Chronos, Zynaps, R-Type, Cybernoid, Dan Dare 1+2+3, Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands, Nether Earth, Turtles Ninja, Dynamite Dan, Joe Blade, Arkanoid, Booty (remastered), Batman: The Movie, Batman: The Caped Crusader, RoboCop, TaiChi Tortoise, Trap Door, Lode Runner, Solomon's Key... and lot of NEW games like Castelvania, Last Train to Tranz-Central, Castle Escape, JETSBOT, Valley of Rains, Seraphima, . I hate joysticks for speccy games though. I recently reviews The Transformers and had to resort to a joystick due to the keys being stupid, who sets 1234 and 5 as keys with no redefine! No idea what's actually going to be on the Retro, but regardless I'd want Dynamite Dan, Rollercoaster, Quazatron, Head over Heels, TLL, Target Renegade, Hyper Sports, Laser Squad, Bombjack, Myth. Oh and I recall really liking Hyper Active until it never went anywhere and it got very dull, very quick, great looking though and fast.
Lovely list with some that are not gonna be on it! Thank you! I must admit on my +2 I go keyboard over joystick but rubber keys....... not so sure lol.
@@SebsPlaceYT Yeah to be fair I had a + then a +2, and I can't say the plus was super fun but at that time my alternative was a Quickshot 2... Later years I did have a Competition Pro and Konix Speedking, those were ok (not gonna count the horrible bundled +2 Joystick), but the +2 keys were king.
Buzzsaw+ (Foxton Locks Mix) El Stompo Snake Escape Dreamwalker: Alter Ego 2 Valley of Rains Travel Through Time Vol.1: Northern Lights Gluf Ringo Roger the Pangolin in 2020 Knurled Tour The Haunting of Waterbelle End
@@SebsPlaceYT - obviously the top one, since I wrote it! A Tetris / Columns variation with some depth and strategy to getting high bonus scores, if you're patient with it. But you're going to see some pretty amazing things done with the graphics in a lot of them. Dreamwalker is a very good series of puzzles with stylish presentation, and Roger the Pangolin doesn't have much depth (the handful of levels were mostly supplied by volunteers in a rush to a Christmas launch during lockdown), but the scrolling 3D road in full pixel-perfect flowing colour with no clash is something no Speccy owner would ever have thought possible. Compare to the depressing monochrome stippling on the Speccy version of Trailblazer.
C'mon there were some good text adventures for the Speccy, way better than The Hobbit. I'm thinking of course of games like Red Moon, Snowball and er...I'm sure there were others!
Can turbo esprit count as the racing game? The great escape, Thanatos (where you played as a dragon was very cool), valkrye 17 as the text adventure, ikari warriors, Bruce Lee, way of the same exploding fist and football manager. Chuck in contact Sam cruise and school days and maybe pyjamarama and I’d be very happy
@SebsPlaceYT Do you know if there's the possibility of storing kore games into the internal memory of The Spectrum apart from the 48 games already included or do we have to load them from an USB device directly? If so, how much space it is available on it to add new games? Thanks in advance!
😂😂 yeah probably not, but you know if you pass Menkind or whatever that gadget shop is called in 6 months' time, and they have it on sale for £50, you won't resist 😁😁
My biggest regret. I actually sat 2 seats away from Joffa in an office once. At the time, I had zero idea he'd made so many of my favorite games.. The office was full of old-school game people.. Back then there was no way to know who was who in that sense. We worked closely together on a game once, I was a bit of dick to him as he couldnt get his head around 3d.. As I say.. I regret.
😥 ah mate, I can see why you regret that. I didn't realise until I got back into these games as an adult how many of my favourites were Joffa games. He was such a talent. Love the username btw 😀
short version - Splat, Rockstar Ate my Hamster, TLL, Lightforce, Stop the Express, Rebelstar 2, Colossal Adventure, Maziacs, Galaxians (Arctic 1982) & ..... I forget now! Err Jumping Jack :)
@@SebsPlaceYT My list is a bit skewed because I also listed games that impressed on launch. Maziacs, Galaxians and Splat! But got overshadowed fairly quickly by more polished releases. A case in point I remember buying and being impressed by Imagine Softwares Arcadia (For any ZX Spectrum) when it was released early 1983. About 3 months later it was completely humbled by the far more polished Jet Pac, also for any ZX Spectrum. And to think I thought UPTG were copying Imagines artwork and slick advertising..... And yes I am going to buy the Retro Spectro.
I have to be honest I don't see the point of emulating the rubber key spectrum. When I had a rubber key spectrum I couldn't wait for the Spectrum+ to come out so we could have a decent keyboard. It was almost impossible to play some games on those rubber keys. To be honest with emulators like Spectaculator etc I would rather stick to my laptop keys nowadays.
The +2 is my daily driver for playing speccy games because the keyboard is so nice. The dead flesh keys were awful but ..... I get why they went for that here. It's the iconic model and keys aside. it's a fantastic looking micro.
@@SebsPlaceYT Strangely I own a geniune original rubber keyed spectrum. I have never powered it up. I have it on the shelf cos it looks great, but I remember it wasn't great for playing games heh heh
If they do it right, I think it can be a good way to get people back into spectrum gaming without the hassle of setting up something yourself or getting old hardware to work. Plus, the rubber keyed version of the speccy always looked cool 😎
well the are three that always come to mind when I think of the dear old Speccy; Splat! Spectral Invaders and Penetrator. why because that was 1982 baby (OK technically Spat! was 83 but my local shop had an early release)
Still can't agree with praising Cobra. We had the discussion before, but again...This kludgy game can hardly be treated as tie-in. Apart from the graphics the gameplay leaves much to be desired as things are a bit too fast to smoothly plan the actions and react with you spinal cord😮
Dunno, I find it quite addictive. I would love to know some games you would add to the new retro spectrum thing 😁 I need some more suggestions for part 2!
@@SebsPlaceYT well, if to think of standard joystick as a must for the game to be included in the list then there should be some hits like Zybex (for 2 players co-op:)) and Spy Hunter. If some control variations are allowed then Captain Fizz (two players again), Elven Warrior and Blinky's Scary School.
@@SebsPlaceYT There are two cover tape puzzle games off YS, Block Dizzy and Peking and 4X4 Off Road Racing from Epyx. As for other games I would play on it, Halls Of The Things, Timegate and Dark Star all use the keyboard.

2) Green Beret
3) Feud
4) Universal Hero
5) Fantasy World Dizzy
6) Dark Side
7) Rex
8) Captain Blood
9) Renegade
10) Wizball
11) Chuckie Egg
Awesome! Thank you! Some great games there to add to the list for part 2. Cheers
Funnily enough I'm currently playing space crusade for another video. Great choices!
You could always get a cheap small screen hdmi tv and have on a desk like in the 80s
Some very good choices there and fond memories :D
Up-voted you just for including Pyramid! 🙂
Haha thank you!
An interesting list.
I thought there might have been an isometric puzzle game in there such as Knight Lore or Head Over Heels.
Hi - Head over Heels is already built in but let me know some games you would like to see and I'll add them to the list for part 2
Oh no!!! What games are you going to play on it?
Probably Jet Set and Paper Boy 👍
Great, thank you!
No Nemesis The Warlock?! ....this may be as i am obsessed with that character
Funnily enough I played that today! Great stuff! Will stick on the shortlist.
@@SebsPlaceYT nice, I was so happy when I found my +2 had a copy with it when I got it as a kid , got the ys issue with Nemesis on cover framed on wall
Nice! I have that issue too!
Haha - yes!!! Please watch my fantastic hunt for that game in the wild!!
ua-cam.com/video/LkYIwEHWU-M/v-deo.html
I might actually get one of these even though it's almost completely pointless when you have a PC...
First games I'd delve into would probably be:
Renegade
Target Renegade
Roller Coaster
Dan Dare
(Bit of an eclectic mix there i know)
Good mix - thanks! Loads have said Target Renegade but it's already on the device. A few have said Roller Coaster, which I'm not sure I've played but it's not available to download safely annoyingly!! I'm going to seek it out though, cheers.
@@SebsPlaceYT man, you have to take a look at Roller Coaster! It was epic for its day... still is!
Cheers!
@@SebsPlaceYT well I definitely will be playing Geoff Capes Strongman now.
😪😪 was thinking about this today after you mentioned it. So.sad .
Personally, I would include:
Codename MAT
Battle of Britain by Microgame Simulations
Tomahawk by Digital Integration
Elite by Firebird,
Bomb Jack
Valhalla by Legend
TimeGate by Quick Silver or Ant Attack by Sandy White
Bosconian by Mastertronic
Yes Prime Minister
Seiddab Attack by Hewson.
Not all of these are joystick only. Sometimes the keyboard is much more fun for cerebral games and simulations.
Yep totally agree on the keyboard comment! Thanks for your list! Adding the games to the list for part 2
Bruce Lee - 1st game I completed too 😊
That last game is suspiciously like Lunar Jetman by Ultimate Play The Game.
My list:
Saboteur II
Terramex
Robocop
Action Force II
Chase HQ
Xevious
Target Renegade
Livingstone I presume
Flying Shark
Viking Raiders
And if Icould add more
Cybernoid I and II
Saboteur
Mário Bros
Express Raider
Green Beret
Dan Dare ( all of them)
Thanatos
Renegade
Commando
Tour de Force
Marauder
Battle Valley
Operation Wolf
Cheers
Awesome!!! Thank you very much. All added to the list for part 2.
Ha - I presume you watched part 2?
@@SebsPlaceYT not yet, my backlog is huuuge
The Pyramid. Get in lol.
For my new C64 my parents got me a bunch of budget games and this was one. I loved it as the aliens took on cool appearances. I wanted to get further to see the new .characters.😂
Ha - yeah, it's so simple but so addictive!
NOVEMBER????! I cant wait that long!!!
Christmas pressie to yourself?
nice top man
Limiting to joystick-playable and freely available games limits my choices by a fair bit, but I'm going with:
1. Tintin on the Moon
2. Destructo
3. Lords of Chaos
4. Fantasy World Dizzy (would be Magicland but it's not available)
5. Deathchase
6. Maziacs
7. Zoids: The Battle Begins
8. Equinox
9. DRIFT!
10. Travel Through Time Vol. 1
No, it doesn't hit the full list of genres. No, I don't care.
😂 thank you for having a good crack at it and more importantly being the first person to mention Dizzy which I feel has to have a game shoe horned in somewhere. Thank you, I'll add these to my list for part 2!
What More text adventures? How about all the CRL horror games or The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or Melbourne House's Sherlock Holmes?
😁 thanks!
The z80 chip will never die.
Laser squad! its brill.
Everyones list will be slightly different and none are wrong.. but here is mine anyway haha..
1, RPG - Hero quest
2, ARCADE CONV - Agreed. Mikie (Bomb jack a DAM close second though)
3, SMUP - R-Type (yes there are better ones but this one was what i played the most)
4, 2 PLAYER - Bubble Bobble.. (again.. better.. but me and my mates played this to death)
5, SPACE SHOOTER - Elite of course! (Or Codename MAT.. LOVED that too)
6, RACING - Agreed.. Deathchase (although Chase HQ would be a VERY close second)
7, PUZZLE - Puzznic.. (Did not go in for puzzle games.. i was 12 and just wanted to kill things haha)
8, SPORTS - Agreed Hypersports
9, PLATFORMER - Chuckie egg.. (Again.. not the best but so simple and my all time fave)
10, COVER EXCLUSIVE - No idea as i never knew what games were non released cover tape only games.. lol
Yes Dazza! Great list thank you! All added to the list of contenders for part 2! Thank you!
Ha yeah, Jetpac is amazing. Any games you would like to see added to it?
Luckily we can add them after :)
I recommend Kim Justice's Top 100 Spectrum games
Kim's great! 🥰
I had the issue of SU with Hyper Active and cannot for the life of me remember playing it. Guess I missed out.
😭
Great list. I've preordered the Speccy. Quick question, where will be the best place to download additional games from?
Cheers. spectrumcomputing.co.uk/list is a great resource. They have everything that's not copyright claimed. All my games listed in this video are available here.
@@SebsPlaceYTGreat, thanks for this!!
Green Beret surely!!
Spectrum and Amiga forever!!!
The retro spectro. Aha. I call it the 'pocket Rocket'.
I think the "retro spectro" might be the best name ever
😂😂😂 thank you!
Buzzsaw+ (Foxton Locks Mix)
El Stompo
Snake Escape
Dreamwalker: Alter Ego 2
Valley of Rains
Travel Through Time Vol.1: Northern Lights
Gluf
Ringo
Roger the Pangolin in 2020 Knurled Tour
The Haunting of Waterbelle End
I'm give a shout out to a game not from the commercial era. Which of these would be you recommend over others?
😁😁 100% there was!
Some brilliant ones in there! Thank you. Great Escape was a big favourite of mine and is already including with the retro spectro, which is awesome!
Turbo esprit definitely counts too!
He's not mad Seb he's just misunderstood
😂😂 I feel bad now.
@SebsPlaceYT Do you know if there's the possibility of storing kore games into the internal memory of The Spectrum apart from the 48 games already included or do we have to load them from an USB device directly?
If so, how much space it is available on it to add new games?
Thanks in advance!
Hiya - don't know yet but it's probably the same as the c64 mini where you play them from the USB. Cheers.
I used to really enjoy viking raiders and Tank.
colosal cave text adventure
I'm currently playing Booty classic
Aside from the annoying tune, I love that game! Still haven't completed it!
Oh and Death Race has a 🔔 end for a gun 😀
😁
I'm still waiting for an Amstrad CPC reboot 😗
Yeah, wonder if anyone will.
Do i really need this? I have an Original 48K rubber Keyboard, 128K Toast Rack. +2 and +3. I also have Zx Spectrum Next Kickstarter 1+2.
😂😂 yeah probably not, but you know if you pass Menkind or whatever that gadget shop is called in 6 months' time, and they have it on sale for £50, you won't resist 😁😁
No
Should have included Bandersnatch
😁😁
Seriously, no Wanted Monty Mole or Dynamite Dan?
I'll add them to the list for part 2. Anymore you would add?
Are you going to,buy one of these spectrums Seb?
I think so. Might ask for it for Christmas 🎄
Retro spectro sounds like a slur against old-fashioned ghosts 😂
🤣🤣
My biggest regret. I actually sat 2 seats away from Joffa in an office once. At the time, I had zero idea he'd made so many of my favorite games.. The office was full of old-school game people.. Back then there was no way to know who was who in that sense. We worked closely together on a game once, I was a bit of dick to him as he couldnt get his head around 3d..
As I say.. I regret.
😥 ah mate, I can see why you regret that. I didn't realise until I got back into these games as an adult how many of my favourites were Joffa games. He was such a talent. Love the username btw 😀
what happened to my exhaustive and well researched post??? I spent 9 minutes writing it. I only swore twice - does that automatically get deleted now?
short version - Splat, Rockstar Ate my Hamster, TLL, Lightforce, Stop the Express, Rebelstar 2, Colossal Adventure, Maziacs, Galaxians (Arctic 1982) & ..... I forget now! Err Jumping Jack :)
Oh no!!! Nothing to do with me. I have no moderation on, so I just remove abusive ones myself. Did you list some games?
Go on delete this one too UA-cam!!! I dare you!!! I only said shite and bollocks in my previous post FFS
😂😂😂 yer bastards!!! Great list, thank you!! Maziacs is a great shout, what a game!
Retro Spectro or Rectrum Spectrum!
YOU DECIDE!!!
🤣🤣🤣 can I have your permission to use that in the 2nd episode? Quality!
Whats inside it , a raspberry pi ?
Something similar in power. Needs very little.to run a small front end and spectrum emulation.
Batman robocop renegade feud ATV dizzy spyhunter trapdoor Predator robocop 2
Some great games there, thank you!
Don't be a mug, save your money for something genuinely useful.
If they do it right, I think it can be a good way to get people back into spectrum gaming without the hassle of setting up something yourself or getting old hardware to work. Plus, the rubber keyed version of the speccy always looked cool 😎
Got a cassette of death chase.
Such a classic! AND 16K!!!!!
Ridiculous the amount of games added
More!
Give me some games you wanna play and I'll add you to part 2!
well the are three that always come to mind when I think of the dear old Speccy; Splat! Spectral Invaders and Penetrator. why because that was 1982 baby (OK technically Spat! was 83 but my local shop had an early release)
lovely! thank you!
SQIJ! 😂
If some control variations are allowed then Captain Fizz (two players again), Elven Warrior and Blinky's Scary School.
awesome thank you!! I'll add those to growing list. Appreciate it mate.
@@SebsPlaceYT looking forward to your next video on this
Squij 😂😂😂😂

(lol)
😂😂😂 give me some games that you would love to see and you can be on part 2 too!!!
@@SebsPlaceYT There are two cover tape puzzle games off YS, Block Dizzy and Peking and 4X4 Off Road Racing from Epyx.
As for other games I would play on it, Halls Of The Things, Timegate and Dark Star all use the keyboard.
Lovely! Thank you!
