There is a forum on line for John Deere crawlers run by a man named wilcox. He and many of the contributors have a great depth of knowledge about old crawlers. He also restorea them and sells parts. Good luck , they are great little machines.
100 grit dry sandpaper before you move the pistons. socket on the crank. Put a 8 foot pipe on the strong arm. Light oil - kerosene even. Leave it for 3 days. This is called the Resurrection for a reason. The paper wipes the rust, the oil picks it up and a roll of TP, to wipe out the mess. The 2x4 is the last attempt. Gently rock this crank. As for sending it out. I never did and got 5 years out of a seized engine. It was not the only one I fixed. Of the 20 cars I have owned in 40 yrs, I fixed alot and even got paid to wrench. All never burned oil, except the diesel rabbit that liked to drink its engine oil. We fixed stuff with bailing wire, that lasted longer than the midas muffler. I hope your smiling.
I’ve started working on one of these that’s been abandoned in the woods of Alaska since before my employer owned the land, it was seized bad and the cylinders are rough/rusted bad. I plan on getting the pistons out and the rings free, honing the cylinders as good as I can, and seeing if it can make enough compression to run. 🤞
Hi good to see you working on the crawler. I find you can get an engine sit 2 years and it's junk, then get another one sat 40 years and it turns after a couple wiggles with a pipe wrench on the crank. I had that happen with 2 P6 Fordson E27N s from the samer yard a few years ago. I changed the oil cleaned the filters bled the diesel in one and filled/bled the other and both fired right up on batterys without a small shot of ether or towing them. one still had what i think was diesel in from when it was last used I checked it for water, and it ran good on it. They haven't run a while now but will probably have issues with the modern diesel being bad !. I'm guessing we call it a service and 40 year cold start L.O.L, I wish I'd of filmed them at the time, nobody would believe it. A buddy of mine had one the same sat years out with the head off, you can imagine the mess in the cylinders. He cleaned the worst rust out, then filled the cylinders with evaporust for a while. It freed up and turned over nice, but the sleeves were pitted to bad to hone and use again with new rings. Thanks for the video, this was much better to watch as nobody nearly got killed ! Take care
Acetone, transmission fluid, PB blaster, Marvel m. oil, diesel etc ...are all options for soaking the pistons. I would disconnect the rods so as you drive the pistons out you will not damage the crank, etc. You guys have a great facility to work on it in and you can sell the $300 special to finance the rebuild project....
Last 2 of these that I have worked on had cracked heads.... Both were repairable, hope yours isn't cracked!! Looking forward to the next video!! Cheers!
Back in the late 70s I was a motorcycle mechanic. Every spring we would have one or two bikes come in locked up form sitting in a garage with an invented dryer. The cylinder that had stopped with the valve open would rust from all the moisture in the air. We would close the valve using a variate of methods depending on the type of bike, fill the cylinder with WD40 and put 110 PSI air pressure on it through a fitting in the spark plug hole. Simple and no damage.
scrounge some 2" pipe and slice it open.. so you have 2 C shapes.. you can use that on the end of the loader rams to hold the loader up off the ground. if you have some pallets around. you might want to build a multi shelf rack of pallets to store your parts on.. you might be able to create them so you can just have something to keep them apart.. some 2x8 or 2x12s on their sides.. or even concrete blocks in the corners some at angles to allow you to store all the engine and other parts in one location when you are not doing something with them.
I would cover the engine and fill the cylinder with Marvel's Mystery Oil and let it soak in let it soak in try to get the cylinder to move all the way to the bottom then clean the rust rings lightly with Emery cloth on the cylinder probably be able to save it without taking it to the Machine Shop. Then if you get it running the first couple tanks I would do would be a like 2-stroke mix that way it keeps adding lubricant to the top side of the cylinder
Many years ago I redid one of these for my brother in law and it was in the condition yours is in. The biggest issue that will continue is the final drive clutches. If you haven't got into them yet, you will.
Oh my God! Pounding on the piston. WOW! Should have filled the cylinder with diesel fuel and lit it with a propane torch and let it burn out then tapped it with the block of wood. Very surprised you didn't break the piston.
I really enjoy this look into working on antique tractors by somebody who's a lot more knowledgeable than I am. But these tractor videos are making me dread trying to get our old Ford 8N running again. It's been sitting out in the elements for years, and now I'm worried it might need more than just new tires and a new wiring harness. ._.
Man, that cylinder's exhaust valve must have been open to let the rain in or something. I noticed the exhaust stack cracked or broken at the top of the manifold instead of unbolted. I did see it had a muffler and rain-cap before you started the tear down. Hopefully when you get it out, the crank case isn't full of water damage. Good luck! I ate at Sonic Tuesday night on W 21st St. Wife wanted some of there "Hearty" Chili. More like chili soup. Big disappointment. We used to get the chili from Wendy's but theirs has turned into soup too.
My thoughts exactly, when I saw it had a cap I thought it would be dry. The water found a way in anyway! Dang, all this chili with no meat in it is a let down. The Wendy’s chili is just overcooked hamburgers ground up 🥘
I rebuilt an engine out of a 440, which I believe is the same one. Wish I'd seen this when it first came out, I could have given you a lot of info right away.
Oh dear. Something that I've had success with on some very ropy engines is filling the cylinders with diesel and letting it sit for a few days to a week. If it drains down into the sump/oil pan then the piston should be free, if not then you've not lost anything as you were looking at pulling it all apart anyway. Although it looks like it needs a rebuild anyway freeing it up and getting it running, even if only for a little bit, might give you an idea of any more problems you may find with the engine and whether any parts that are only accessible with the engine out are working reasonably or are completely Rogered...
Grandpas secret to locked engine get some mystery oil pour on top of the Pistons let sit for 2 days , then turn over with pipe wrench . My grandpa was a master engine builder for Napa in my home town did it for 50+ years .
What about putting some heat on the head or top of the cylinders? I know it probably needs machining and new pistons anyways. I'm surprised it has only 2 cylinders.
You are blessed that is an awesome machine remove the carb(pot) fill the cylanders with marvel oil and leave only use non detergent oil in the hydraulics or you'll have a foamy mess I built several of these most in tractor form one crawler it will break free will the Marvel
Badgermatt75 2016 we also suspect it to be industrial. The two cylinder club is running the serial number for us so we’ll know for sure before too long.
Here is the parts catalog for the 420 - 430 which includes the Crawlers jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/pdfs/PC0505.pdf This will give you part numbers, which you should be able to order from JD. It does help with removal of parts and helps in putting them back together. I think you can even get a new block if needed.
That was our go-to but at this point I think we’re going to drop the engine out. A quick ball hone would be the perfect fix! Pistons aren’t moving more than about an 1/8” 🍻
I live near poteau ok and fort Smith ark not very many Atwoods stores except for a few states around Oklahoma and Arkansas. Just wondering where y’all based out of
@@watchjaredwork1487 you'd be surprised. I've had very rusty bores come close to perfect with the stuff. Plus, by dissolving most of the rust, you reduce the amount of force you exert on the rings when trying to free the engine up.
Have a question for you how big did your mining ever get? heard about it then just gone lol wondering if it was successful or has it just crashed since so many people started?
12 1080ti's on 3 motherboards. I sold it all off expecting the 2080ti to drop 6 months before it did. With the insane prices the 1080ti's were fetching I came out almost even on the cards while making a few thousand in mined crypto. I had a blast with it and I think the technology will lead to the next currency system... but I'm thrilled I was able to sell all my positions while the market was still massive! Did you get in to it? How'd you do? 💸
J. Harker83 it’s not actually stuck anymore, the rings corroded 1/16” grooves in the liner from sitting and rusting and it’s caught on them. No penetrant is going to help. Pistons need pressed out.
Hook it to another tractor and just put it in gear and have the tractor pull u and let out the clutch it will free up the pistons and let it spin freely
Backwoods Runaround that’s how rods get bent. If I couldn’t break it loose with a 20lb sledge then there’s no use trying that. We’ll do it properly without breaking anything by pulling it apart and pressing the pistons out.
maibe you can lessen the ridge carefully (not sand beyond the first oversize) with some fine sandpaper , enough to be able to move the pistons either that or once the engine and crank is out of the machine put the whole thing under the hydraulic press and force the pistons out the bores could make an adapter from a piece of steel U beam that bolts across the headbolts and use one of those energy pac hydraulic cilinder photos.tradeholding.com/attach/hash30/176926/jack.jpg to push the piston down (or put some force on it and leave it that way overnight with the penetrating oil )

Too bad... Get it going, cool implement you don't see anymore. Would love a step by step rebuild
I’ll get as step by step as I can... it’ll still need to go to the machine shop for bore or liner replacement, but I can sure show everything else! 🍻

Oh I understand all that. Gear head here... Just wanna see her get back to pushing dirt around
I only say that because machine shops always take 3 weeks and there’s no way for me to video that part, wish I could! 😢

I understand completely bud,. Unless you own one it's hard to video inside one
Do an in frame overhaul, pop the cylinder liners out, check the crank and rod bearings, replace the pistons/ rings and it will be good to go !!
Too late now! Watch the latest update, engine is out. 💪
I rebuilt an engine out of a 440, which I believe is the same one. Wish I'd seen this when it first came out, I could have given you a lot of info right away.
Fill the cillinders with diesel let it sit for a day it will make de job a lot easier
I use half diesel half ATF. I don't know if it works any better than straight diesel, that's just what all the old timers around here use.
Or atf and acitone
Pour some marvels mystery oil in in let it sit for a few weeks she will brake loose
You should mount the broken camera on the 420 like a hood ornament
Haha, wear it like a badge of honor! The old camera is being fixed, I wanted to keep it for carnage, but I also needed another camera 🍻
Nice teamwork men..... helluva a project and learning experience...

What a beast of a fork-lift!
The forks were looking a bit springy with all that weight on them but it’s a champ! 🚜

Thanks! Might take a couple weeks but it will run soon (just in time for spring) 🌞
Makes me want to buy another piece of equipment.. I really should fix one of the 4 I already have.
Probably already been said, when towing it pop it into gear to roll the engine over. In the correct direction gear of course....
regnaD kciN that’s how rods get bent. Especially when they’re stuck this tight.
I would fill the cylinders with diesel for a few days and that will help you get everything nice and loose.
No, the trailer/winch tried to kill you. The tractor is innocent; don't be machinist.
😂😂😂 best thing I’ve read all day
I had a feeling it will end up as an overhaul job. Stuck engines like that usually needs disassembly in most stuck engines I encounter.
Unfortunate but you don’t really know what you’re getting into until it runs or comes apart! 🤙
@@WatchJRGo split the tractor for this job. I would do the steering clutches while you have it apart.
A+ for effort Buddy.

Yeah definitely an Industrial model. Farmall did the same
