There used to be dealers for old used JD parts around the country, also JD had a pretty good stock of parts for the old tractors and there were a couple of tractor salvage yards. I worked in John Deere parts for 16 years and used to get older stuff from all over the country.
You can still get most parts you need like gaskets from JD easily, hard parts are a bit more scarce. We found a piston kit for this but I think it's from a 3rd party. 🍻
On some tractors if the starter ring gear is only worn with no missing teeth you can turn it around and use the other side. My Nuffield tractor has it's ring turned around and the starter works nicely.
Nice buy! Your video shows me some of what I’m getting ready to get into. I bought a John Deere MC Crawler a couple weeks ago. I’ve got it running but the main clutch will not disengage. Looks like I’ll be taking my engine out too! 😁😑
Can't wait to see the actual engine tear down happen. Hope you don't have to sleeve it but it's not the end of the world if you have to. I've seen that done on small block chevy engines before although that's far less common these days as there are SO many used blocks out there that it's less trouble to start out with a new block unless doing a numbers matching restoration. Unfortunately I doubt there are a lot of 420c crawler donor engines around.
Just talked to him, he said this engine was never sleeved from the factory. He can make the piston kit happen, just need to get the machine work done. 💪 Good call @AKWayne S
.. I’m not ashamed to admit, through the course of this video I caught myself saying, “Man, I wish I had ___. (A crawler, a fork truck, etc.)” a couple of times, lol.
This reminds me of so many times in my dads shop working on the little Debueqs. I'm looking to move from pneumatic wrenches to Milwaukee's. Those fuel series look like the cats meow. What's your thoughts on what you were using? Perhaps a review?
That big 1/2" Milwaukee is wild. It crushes the air impacts and you don't have to string a hose out! We're getting really spoiled in 2019 with these excellent cordless tools. I'll try to talk a bit more about the impacts next time we're using them. 🛠
Hi jr, Jared, what do you guys do in the shop? Looks like you're fabbing tanks and?? Show us more! If the crawler turns out to be industrial it would be interesting to hunt history on it. You might be able to get shipping document copies from when it was new. Thanks for sharing
OLD SCHOOL I work in the shop every day and we are manufacturing once-through steam generators for the petroleum industry along with a wide variety of other industrial repair and design work. JR works elsewhere in the Information Technology industry.
The 420 looks like it was yellow at one time. Check around, it might be less expensive to get a different block. Check JD two cylinder club/Facebook, search on there for engine blocks crawler parts that you might need.
I'm not sure how we're going to strip it yet, I don't love sand blasting since it abrades the metal. I'd like to dry strip it but hey sand blasting is cheap and easy. I do have another friend I could call that has a soda blasting trailer. 🍻
Don't worry about metal abrasion, there is lots there to clean up. I did mine without any problem. As for over size pistons, I used .090" but I did not have the groove in the cylinder walls like you have. Take your time and do it right and it will last for years to come. I did mine 20 years ago and it still looks great and works the same way, just my crawler is a 40C.TonyK.
LOL. I shouldn't pick on you, because you're not doing anything wrong. It's just so obvious in the video how hard you are trying to keep your clothes clean. You never lean on anything. You always have gloves on. Anyway, just amusing to me.
Dad taught me a good mechanic doesn't have to come home covered in grease or ruin their clothes. I've always tried to stick to that by continually cleaning the workspace and pre-cleaning projects before I get into them 🛠
Loose the gloves , have seen to many fingers ripped of because of them , it’s a dirty trade even when you clean everything up . You would be stuffed doing field service. I am a diesel mechanic of 40 plus years . A bit of dirt never hurt anyone , you make it painful to watch trying to keep clean
just put a new ring gear on dont need a new fly wheel better check the propeller shaft make sure its not bent. pretty sure there not liners they are cast mold of the block and be cheaper to get a block
Why are you guys driving around with that on the forks 3 feet up in the air? You're supposed to drop it down to an inch or two off the floor as soon as you can. Forklift 101. Would you rather have if fall an inch or 3 feet? Use your head.
INF1D3L010 lol maybe on flat concrete. If we carried it an inch off the ground outside it would be running into the ground all the time. We carry things safely. Been running these forklifts a long time and been through plenty of forklift safety classes. Thanks for your input though.
@@watchjaredwork1487 I said an inch *or two*. I've done plenty of out-door work, and two inches is sufficient for most any conditions, but honestly, up to 4 inches is acceptable while travelling. If there are obstacles, sure, go ahead and pick it up a bit more, but as soon as you're clear, it should go right back down.
To add... In Canada, it's actually the law that you travel with the minimum required load-height at all times. If something happens and they find that you weren't following the rules, you're fucked. Maybe where you're from it's different, but where I'm from, work-place accidents are treated like crime scenes.
Like Jared said we are driving it over terrain that rapidly varies multiple feet. It is right at the minimum required to not drag the load. 🍻 I understand you can do it better but we are actually doing it and watching the tracks scrap the ground.

Yeah buddy! That tractor when restored is gonna be a beauty... Im excited to see the engine starting again...
Yes it is, can't wait to see it gleaming in the sun with fresh paint! Glad you're here 🍻
Glad you are moving forward on it, gonna be a neat little machine once it’s up &
running.
Let me know if you need to borrow it, you keep all the snow up there! 🤙 (Side note, I really wish I had a blade for this, that would rock)
On some tractors if the starter ring gear is only worn with no missing teeth you can turn it around and use the other side.
My Nuffield tractor has it's ring turned around and the starter works nicely.
New liners, pistonrings, bearings, hoses, seals and a head job (lapping the valves etc) maybe around
I'll see if I can flip the ring, that's a good call @NuffMan! 🤙
I think it is kinda cool that such a small engine can get something so heavy to move.
Right?! Hardly any horsepower, a handful of torque, tons of gearing 💪
Nice teamwork. Makes the job go so much quicker!
Absolutely, I always say the more the merrier on projects. If there's too many hands you'll still have fun 🤙
Wow, that's a seriously deep groove in the cylinder. I'm not surprised that engine REALLY didn't want to spin...
The rust underneath the piston was unbelievable, we never would've gotten it with the block and hammer. 😮
Will be cool to see this run again !
Cool idea would be taking crawler lower and turning it into an half track pickup, go OD Green on the paint job.
This is getting interesting keep them coming, I like it.
You're going to like the next update then, thanks for watching! 🚜
Such a cool old tractor
Now THAT is an engine hoist!
Nice when you don’t have to run a jack or anything right? 🍻
WatchJRGo Effortless is best!
Excellent content and editing as always. Keep up the good work.
That will be nice once you get the engine rebuilt and paint everything.
I'm not sure what it is, but I could watch hours of you fellas rip shit apart, lol, cheers!
agreed. im also envious of that garage. PLENTY of room

I better see that loader go back on
Fixing the loader may take more than the entire tractor restoration! I only want to fix it so I can use the plasma table to make new plates 😂
Just save yourself the trouble and have a machine shop machine new sleeves for you. It'll save you a lot of hassle in the long run.
keep going guys
I heard that two hour naps sounds like me.
Wenger's of myerstown pa has blocks on the shelf shipping is rather reasonable too.
While I'd like to quickly swap the block, I think my machinist can save it pretty easily. We'll all find out soon! 🛠
I hope you downloaded that parts catalog as Deere announced that the site will be going down shortly.
Eric Teeter I haven’t heard or seen this anywhere else, how did you find this out?
@@watchjaredwork1487 You can download jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/pdfs/PC0505.pdf
Yea I already have that but where did you hear they are shutting that sight down?
Was that a belly pan or a planter?
Both 😂
Check with Richard Brown at New Paris Tractor parts in New Paris Indiana.

I’d rather have a 440 with the 2-53 Detroit than a 4bt.

We have all the crawler info coming from two cylinder club, it will tell us color, special equipment, warehouse date, ship date, and destination.

@@watchjaredwork1487 yep two cylinder club is a great resource. Be interesting info with all the yellow in that crawler.
eh it doesnt need that little 2 cylinder... put a SBC in it and itll be happier

Have you checked your serial number? With all of the yellow paint you may have a 420C industrial.
zeller200 we also think it might be industrial. Two cylinder club is running it.
I'm hoping it is, ready for that yellow paint! 🚜

Flex tape and jb weld will fix that pitting, probably could just make a whole new engine McGyver style with duct tape. Be as good as new.
One size fixes all! If we would’ve used Flex tape this would’ve gone viral 😂
