Can’t wait to see it running! Your dad is amazing, you should do more videos with him
It is cool when your dad "guest stars" in a video.
Always an honor and pleasure to watch your Dad join you. Most of the valuable lessons in my professional life have been learned from the "old dogs" like your dad. I took the time to listen, apply, and express gratitude. You're a lucky guy to have the support and love of family. Count your blessings guy. Best regards, JS...... Wait! Is that the elusive Jared? The man, the legend, the brother of JR? Better a chance of seeing Big Foot. Glad you are getting more comfortable being on camera with your bro.
Always treasure these times working with your dad! I love how you two are rebuilding this engine together
I love videos with your father. He's obviously so incredibly knowledgeable and his voice is very smooth. He could do his own radio show!! Lol
JR, I love when you have your dad on the show. He’s like a waking encyclopedia.
Finally, this build was the reason I started watching this channel. Great to see the engine finally coming together.
really cool seeing you work with your dad. i once changed my battery with my dad and he wasn't as much help as i expected ^^ still love him he helped me get my first car :D
I really enjoy hearing your dad share his vast knowledge and experience.
I could listen to your Dad all day. How about some paint?
Your pops sure knows his way around the tool box for sure ! Honestly I’ve been waiting for this video for quite sometime and thus far it’s been worth it ! Unfortunately in the mean time I finished my engine and it’s up and running ! I’m sure yours will be done soon !
Nice to see you "starting" to finish the old girl. This Tractor is what brought me to your channel and I've been subscribed ever since.
Finally.......thought we'd never see that engine put back together. But on a different note: Thank you John Ross and crew for a ton of entertainment in 2019. Glad I found this channel. I know you've had your challenges this year, with the job thing and the loss of "her"......but I bet 2020 things take off. And yes, I'm a believer that in 2020 we hear the R8 come to life. Happy New Year!
One should always chase the threads with a thread chaser tap as part of the block preparation after washing.
respect to your pops. cool to see him in the video
Great to see you getting the 2-cyl engine put back together. Was about 25 years ago when a friend and I bought and restored a 420C. The brakes and clutches were in tough shape, but the engine was good. Could not find a winch for the rear so we could log with it, but it was a powerful little crawler.
Wish you the best.. envious of your ability to get that block back in shape for the build.
Great video with your dad! Mine passed away 10 years ago, but I had the pleasure of building two cars with him and learning a ton! Thanks for this one!
Your dad is awesome lots of knowledge you are very lucky 👍
When will we see the John Deere crawler assembled and working or moving under its own power? Been waiting forever for this content. I started watching your channel after I'd heard about your love for older John Deere tractors. I watched th vid of you tearing down the crawler back in early 2019. Maybe you can get your dad to finish it and video the process for us to watch...
I do believe Jake won random comment of the year award with - ""I love dead blow hammers. They're like someone went "Ahh. what if maraca's, but angrier.""
I think that should be a new t-shirt motto for you JR.
I would buy an Angry Maraca's T-shirt.
Not going to lie, I cringed a little bit when JR said that as a machinist. But this was a great video and I appreciated him making the effort to record as much of the assembly as possible. Most just skip to showing it done.
I'd buy one
I'm going to call them angry maracas every chance I get now.
Yes. Next JR buys a Steam Traction Engine to restore. It's a 2 year project.
Timothy Hays that would be amazing! 💯
That's awesome you and your dad and Jake from State farm working on the bulldozer been waiting a long time to see
Super video for many reasons. That's the happiest you have looked for ages. Wonderful to watch you taking great note of what your Dad says and seeing family work together. A real entertaining video of quality. Well done JR..loved it!!!
More Dad please...a joy to watch him dispense his knowledge.
Cheers, Bob in the UK.
I cannot express how excited I am to see the old John Deere 420C engine being put back together!
Your Dad is a wealth of knowledge, and has a great narration voice. He sounds like a famous comedian, but I can’t remember who.
John Doe LOL no
JR: I have motivation to finish the R8!
Also JR:
Gotta finish all the projects, stagger them in one year increments 😂
@@WatchJRGo That's what Gabe is for. I'm sure he's used to craming 10 lbs. of "stuff" into a 5 lb. bag . 24 hrs. into 51/2. All that military fun n' all. 👍👍✔️✔️
@@WatchJRGo when is this going to happen again? I have been waiting for 10 months. But I understand that you have other projects, but I want to see this thing again!!
Your dad needs his own channel telling us how to build everything.
Way to go, Love it! Family involved.. Cant wait to see it all running, AND "RACING"
Hey its Watchjrdad again....
"is it in?"
"ya"
Best on point engine installers ever ;-)
Keep it up guys always better and better content
1.9L 113 cu in originally. With the over bore its 119.36 cu in or 2.0 L.
Would you know what the torque the engine puts out. Thanks.
Thanks for the video. Good to see you putting that thing together. It seemed to go well and turned over smoothly. That's a good sign. I guess you'll be repairing that screw driver. Looking forward to hearing it run.
Tractors are so much less expensive to work on than cars! Farmers don't put up with crap. Thanks JR!
Your dad's front pocket on his shirt is legendary, fully accessory equipped. I thought my pen/tool pocket collection was extensive but he has me beat. Just wanted to mention that I wear one of those rechargeable built in LED baseball caps and it is extremely useful, so useful in fact that I feel disabled at work when I don't have it. Excellent video, hope to see more like this with you and your dad.
Great video! Cool having your Dad in the video. I think it would be great to have a sit down with your Dad and Nick Welker's Dad from Welker Farm Inc on UA-cam and listen to there stories of building and repairing equipment and engineering stuff. Cheers
Put a little 5w20 oil in the cylinders to give the piston a little lube so it will roll over easier and will not scratch the cylinder. You can never use too much lube, when assembling an engine.
Bumpshaft.
Nice nickname for the camshaft.
Have not heard that since I was a kid. :-)
please prelube the oil pump by working some assembly lube in to the pump by turning the shaft.. so it has a chance of starting.. when the engine has oil in it.. please remove the sending unit or the filter.. and spin the engine till oil starts to flow out of the open passage.. then reinstall which ever you removed and spin it another 10 seconds.. this should properly prime the oil system ,... attempting to prime the oil pump with the system sealed above it will result in a dry start and damaged rod, main and cam bearing surfaces. please squirt some assembly lube inside the rear main seal and lube the seal face with the assembly lube. so it never runs dry.. i did not see you squirt oil on the piston rings.. so you might want to squirt half a pump into each cylinder of engine oil. if you oiled the rings then you can do without.
Rings are oiled and I smeared the cylinders, then poured more on the tops and ran them up and down 🍻
I love videos your father guest stars in.
139 thousand subscribers share a hushed “finally!”
I thought you had forgotten all about the 420. Glad to see it coming back together.
No guide pins? Cut the heads off of bolts longer than the head bolts. Cut slots in the tops to help unscrew them. Bam. Guide pins
Ready to drive this one!
Your father is an engine whisperer...
I assume you pre-gapped the rings off camera? That was the most miserable part of the build I did last year. Cool to see you finally get it back together.
Finally you work on the 420
I'll never have the need for a tractor, but I still enjoyed this. Keep up the diversity of projects JR. Happy new year!
Your dad is a hell of a guy. Lost mine not long ago, they seem to have been from a similar stone, learn as much from him for as long as you can!
Way more than 15hp. Those little things are strong!
You need to add this to your playlist
It makes 29 hp. I own a 420W
What a good video! You both looked like you enjoyed your selves 👍
UA-cam asked me to rate this video. I gave it 5 stars as entertaining. Enjoy!
When are you gonna have a video putting the motor back in?
Don’t forget to throw a little oil in the cylinders. It sounds a little dry when you spin it over. I normally let the pistons sit in a pan of oil so the rings get soaked then take a oily rag and wipe the cylinder down before installing the pistons.
I have to admit I haven’t watched your car videos for months but seeing the updates on the tractor I’m back!!
JR, it's been a hard year but a big year for you too. Thanks for the entertainment, the knowledge and the fun you've had. Really enjoyed your sense of humour. Cheers old mate, from Australia.
Love the vids with ya pops !! Minds me of better times when me n my pops were on speaking terms 😔
So glad I didn’t miss it. I kept checking and looking in the history and couldn’t find anything after the last one I watched. I’m like hym did he just decide to can it. Great content keep up the good work.
JR,
I believe the head does have lineup pins - check the manual. May have been removed to clean - deck the block. Also sounds like no oil on the rings and cylinder bores. Scratchy - Scratchy!
Almost thought you forgot about this one. Flipping cars gets views, but I started watching your tractor videos first
Been hoping this next step in the series of the JD 420C restoration would happen ! Please let the others happen much faster than the months between that these took . I am sure the viewer interest will be there again if there are not long delays .
Nice to meet your Dad .
Finally another 420 video I was afraid it had been thinned from the herd. On a side note there is one that somebody redid parked in front of a house that is one my way to work.
The 420C engine up and running yet? tks
Nice to have your paw with ya
It's been 2 years since assembly, or responding to comments. Did you get it done, or sell it? Or did you do like I do sometimes and put it on the back burner?
Bout time. Needed crawler action.
I am so happy I could cry ! I have been begging forever and it was as good as I thought it would be , but now you just need to make it GREAT for me and finish it !
T.A. Brown me too!! I’m so happy this is happening!! I can’t wait for it to be painted and installed in the chassis. Hopefully we’ll get to see if refurbished as well. Such a unique build!!
@@patmclean1951 I can't wait to see it in action! Every time one of these old 2 cylinder beasts are brought back it makes me happy to see them in action!
And all painted up in the factory yellow and decals! Cool content.
@@patmclean1951 that one would be green since it wasn't listed as an industrial , and unfortunately to get the absolute right decals you can't order them these you buy aren't right if you go back and look at the old sales brochures and videos
I’m sure I recall it being yellow in one of the episodes...either way it would be great to see it all painted up again.
Yo JR get some Klein screw drivers !!! Asap
Nice panel assembly space! In February, my small automation business will be 6 years old! I'm doing PLC, HMI and SCADA programming, on-site troubleshooting and electronic board repair in Quebec, Canada. It's great to see the 420 engine too!
Where in Québec? J'habite à Gatineau.
@@vibrolax Hi! I'm in St-Hyacinthe, montreal south shore area. Salut! Je suis situé à St-Hyacinthe sur la rive-sud.
@@alexandrecouture2462 Ah, bon. I did embedded software and systems integration for specialized CNC machines and instrumentation. Picked up mechanics and controls along the way. Love the physical reality of machines.
I used to do the HMIs for the municipal side of the business, love controls 🍻
@@WatchJRGo Awesome. Because machines can last 30+ years with proper maintenance, it's often economical to replace/augment obsolete or failed controls. Just like farm tractors, huh?
Old to be commenting, but I could hang with you. I'm just putting together an engine out of a 1950 JD M. Plus, I have a couple Fiat 500 abarths. Cool to see people that like stuff I do. Cool videos!!
So glad to see you back working on this
Awww yes!!!! Getting tractors done! Also always fascinating listening to you all about the engines
Its not even close to getting done. What video are you watching?
@@metromusic5725 getting, rather then gotten my freind. One implies a fluid state. The other a state of completeness.
Glad to see it start to get running
Did you finish the tractor?
Hey, on one of the previous videos you said you were going to finish this, did you give up or just not film finishing the 420c?
This is why I joined this channel. Glad to see progress after a year.
A whole 15 HP? This is a project begging for twin turbos, but where would you find a couple of turbos laying around? Hmmm...
Seriously, enjoy your time with your dad. You will treasure the time you spend together.
Dad Approved!!! Talk about professional!
Ross the engine whisperer.
always back your lash off on the rockers prior to installing. you don't want to fight spring pressure when torquing the assembly down.
You should include your dad more often, us old farts have knowledge to share! 😂😂😂
wish our kids felt the same, lol
I was waiting for this one
Shoulda linked the video to the other videos . Really cool watching the rebuild. I had a Fordson super major I never got around to fixing.
Put it in the R8.
100PercentJake lol as we wait for the R8
Finally back to tractors
Bout damn time!
Your dad’s pocket game is top notch.
It's very nice to see father and sons working together, JR's dad seems real cool.
PS: A piece of fashion advice for Jake: it's better to not leave much facial hair on with thinner hair on top, speaking from experience😂 (if it's too mush a hussle for u to shave every, at least get rid of the sideburn)
Do you have a video of you timeing the oil pump??
How’s the build going have you put it back together yet
Watch JR. do anything except the R8. Just kidding. But you really need to get that baby moving. Before it's a race to see what goes bad first, new engine or the new battery.
Yes! Get that thing going!
Nice job
Your dad is pretty cool!
Oh yes!! Here we go!!
JR's dad is a real cool cat...Maybe he should help out on the R8...not that I'm in a rush or anything :)
When did John Deere begin to make their own vertical 2 cylinder engine? I've seen a smaller tractor with a vertical two cylinder but it was a Hercules engine.
How were the valve seats? Did you have them replaced?
Right on guy
