You have fun sense of humor. Tell Persimmon I said hi. I've made Pat Martino's signature lick my own. I've integrated enclosing chord tones to come up with ideas. While I was locked down during the heart of the the plandemic I worked extensively with Jerry Bergonzi's The Jazz Line book which is an in-depth study of bebop scales. Initially is was a lot of work but it did wonders for my phrasing. He doesn't mess around.
Love your playing and the "Demolition" album. A t shirt with that album cover on it would be a big seller.

This is a very cool tutorial! I had to slow the video down to about 50% to learn the riff, but I finally got it. Low and behold, you slowed it down for us any way toward the end. Thanks btw. But lately, I've been getting into Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio. I really want to incorporate that funky organ phrasing into my playing. It seems Delvons melodies are fairly pentatonic based, but the phrasing is so funky, for lack of a better term, that it's soulfully vocal. For a more outside tonality influence, Brecker is definitely the goal.

I saw Hiram Bullock live at a small jazz club in Oslo in my teens, and i have been fascinated by his attitude and solo lines ever after. Your aproach towards listening to and pinching parts of riffs from saxophone players and others, is a killer tip! This approach must have been a base for Hirams soloing as well i think. Mixed with more «ordinary» guitar ways like pentatonic and blues scales freshens up soloparts and makes things sound almostkinda new.
Wich is kinda odd in itself. This used to be the way to go in jazz circles way back in time - get inspired by other musicians.
Maybe we should all listen more to other instrumentalists these days.

The Marsalis sax part -wich is all jazz, almost sound «country» on your guitar.

Great as always man. I've definitely taken a lot from saxophone players. The first thing I took was the doubled note false fingering thing which sounds cool on guitar. I find trumpet lines sit quite well on guitar also

I love listening to Miles, i kinda used something from kind of blue, might have been C, Adderly. Not quite the same but used the interval.
Holy crap moment here ... this sounded vaguely familiar, couldn't place it until you fessed up to where you grabbed it. Years ago my pal gave me dozens of albums which he had gotten the disc of, and the Sting album was among them. I see Little Wing on there and like any good guitarist went straight there. I had a true WTF was that ! moment right where you said. I've always struggled with this outside stuff, and tried mightily to cop it but failed. What a cool lick it is, and now I got it ... except I just turned 70 and have arthritis but I'm still gonna give this a shot. Thanks Shawn, you & Andy Most are the coolest on YT !!
I just recently discovered your videos, Shawn (thanks to Levi's transcription stream) and I absolutely fell in love with your playing. You make playing outside so approachable and musical which inspired me to try to come up with my own outside ideas based on your approach (and maybe steal some of your licks) to incorporate in my rock and blues playing as well as my metal stuff.
My biggest issue with drawing from sax players in a jazzy context is that my ears absolutely not tuned to jazzy chord progressions and I have an extremely hard time to put the lines into harmonic context (and thus utilizing them in my own playing).

Well after I took a jazz appreciation class I started the gravitate more towards jazz and fusion guitar players but I also really picked up on artist like Art Tatum and monk and Charlie Parker... unfortunately for me they're playing was a bit over my head so trying to translate it to guitar is something that I haven't quite attempted to tackle yet I'm not sure I have it under my hands...

What up Shawn! Man,.......Those licks are right in the ballpark of some modal stuff I've been working on!Go figure! Also my brother I'm building an sss strat style guitar from mostly Warmoth parts. I went for a pre wired p guard with my choice of John Suhrs pickups. I can tell you the guys name is Rothstein who does these professionally. What a masterpiece of a job he has done man. It's all copper shielded (wrapped)on back with impeccable wiring. WOW!!! Just wanted to tell you friend. Wanted to share because I'm SURE you would have appreciated this nugget of info. Guitar players unite!! When I get it done I'll try and get a vid done. Bless you homie.
Branford called... he wants his lick back :O) On a serious note, this speaks on 2 subjects: 1. Listen! Other musicians are doing great things that you can "re-purpose". 2. This also goes to the "everything is now copyright because there's nothing new". I feel that the whole music world needs to re-define what "copyright infringement" means, or soon we'll ALL be too afraid to write a song in case someone thinks it's too close to theirs. There are only 12 semitones..... Thanks Shawn for a great vid, AND teh one about your recording / creative techniques.

We can , and will write new stuff, but we'll always repurpose old because that's where our musical voices came from.

Funny, that version of Little Wing is what got me working on chromatic/outside playing when it came out...and Hiram was always a hero of mine. Got to know him online before his death, what a sweetheart of a guy. For 25 years, I've been playing in a funk horn band and I always find trading solos with the horns pushes me into new improv mindsets. It definitely influenced me to think more about outlining the chords, as my natural tendency is to be very scalar.
I became a big fan of Hiram when he was in the "house band" for David Sanborn's sunday night tv show. I met him late one night on a NY City subway and got a chance to tell him how much I enjoyed his playing. He deserved way more recognition than he received.
jakollee he did some funny stuff on SNL too. Loved him on Letterman, and I loved seeing him with the guests on that show Sanborn had for a while with Marcus Miller on bass and Omar Hakim on drums.
@@AZFunk Thanks for reminding me about Hiram on Letterman! But that Sanborn show was so good, really a shame it didn't last that long.

Great playing as usual ! That first lick you played over A is great. I like to find the 1 chord it works over , but then play it over that keys v chord, in this case E 7 .
And then , play it half step out , or repeat lick ever four frets like you would with diminished licks.

Always great videos! The bigger problem for me is once you get one of your licks (or anyone's for that matter) under your fingers, how to remember the when and how to use it when playing. In other words, how do you keep the lick ready to go? If it is truly something new for me...like some of your outside stuff...unless I pound it over and over I forget it pretty quick. How do you keep new stuff you learn ready to go?
You honestly have to do exactly what you mentioned. Do the lick over and over until it becomes muscle memory.

Do you ever do finger stretches ..not on the guitar just stretching before or after playing.
I didn't when I was younger, but as I've gotten older I always try and do finger stretches before I play.
I took Van Halens Running with the Devil solo and combined it with the nightly news to come up with my own lick. No can even tell the lick is related to anything.

Jimmy Page said somewhere at some point that when he looked for solo ideas, he looked to sax players...that sax solos "work" just like guitar solos. Don't hear ppl discuss this much.
It's something old jazz players used to recommend frequently, and it's still incredibly valuable advice.

Dude you gotta baby us thru it with your mouth words, cos it's actually difficult to follow exactly what guitarists' fingers are doing, especially when you don't know the scale shape you're in.
It's a phenomenon kinda like magicians' hands. They can be right in front of you it you still can't quite make out what they did..!
