Papa, wow what a great player, thank you for having Shawn with us and those amazing licks and his approach to creating riffs from chords. I played all of 2 hours with just that one lick in C.
Great video! One thing that wasn't mentioned that I think is a huge part of Shawn's playing is how killin his time feel is!!! Super tight player rhythmically... and add to that the clean chops and tasty licks, and you've got a winner!! Great as always Shawn!
I just watched Shawn's AC20 Vid which as usual left me grinning and shaking my head, I love the outside vibe in blues etc. Was thinking someone needs to get in that guys head, then I find this, lol. Cheers Brett, awesome :-)
Awesome guys. I love this stuff. Entertaining interviews of great guitar players, for sure. But Brett won't let 'em go until he extracts some really useful lessons for all us lot. Major bonus. Thanks guys.
This is one of the best (ok, it's THE best) video on YT about "outside" playing, it definitely warrants repeat viewing. Many thanks to both of you for doing this! (Of course, ST doesn't completely reveal all his secrets: 8:13 to 8:23 - Wow!) I'll be working on some of those licks (in half-speed mode) for a while...
jakollee , i would not call this “outside playing”. This is all from the old bebop/Jazz school. What you are doing is connecting notes from scales or chords with chromatic movements. It is all from the Jazz school and nothing new. When you are playing realy outside you would have to stay much longer out of the tonality before comming back to notes within the tonality. A way to do this for instance is by superimposing chords. Say you have one chord a Cm7, what you can do is thinking: Ebm7 Ab7 I Dm7b5 G7 altered to Cm7 Now the first part of your improvasation is all in Dbm7 before you resolve to the Cm tonality, that realy sounds outside. You can of course expand on this and even stay longer outside of the tonality. The way Shawn uses this bebop approach in a more pop/ blues context you do not her often, and his fluidity in connecting the lines is realy great! I love his playing, but it is not containing secrets. Just go back listening to old school bepop/Jazz. Guys like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, etc... You will all find it in their improvisations. Someone who takes real outside playing to a whole other level was for instance Allan Holdsworth.
Way , way way, above my skill level but incredibly interesting . Shawn Tubbs , Ford Thurston , Guthrie Trapp these posts are superb . Thank you sooo much !!!
Great lesson Bret, Shawn is one of my favorites, I also followed him around the OC trying to glean anything I could from his licks and tone. Please do more videos with Shawn. Thank you Bret & Shawn.
That story about the old Boogie store takes me back... I actually was the guitar teacher there back in the day and got to try and teach over the guys playing the Dual Recs on 10... good times!
I dug the diversion rap! Dropped a few of Nashville player names that I wasn't familiar with. Tracking them now, of course... they're all great. Love these talk session and Shawn always sounds killer!
Hey man, I dig these talk-showy, guest lessons you got going on here. This is a great way for those of us not living in places like LA, Nashville, Austin (or the US in general) to learn about other killer guitarists in Murica. Is this a regular thing?
Shawn is becoming one of the few in my top guitarist. His imagination has my getter totally out of the box. I’m a huge Steve Lukather, Joe Bonamassa, ect.. I love out of the box and tubbs does it in such a tasteful manner
Thanx for sharing. It's great to hear the different perspectives of the peps who out there doing it for real/wkin wit the best! Seems like the majority of these session guy all are very humble. I think their ability to leave the attitude @ the door plays a huge roll in their success!! I am curious as to who you were talking about round here 20:35 I made out tom but couldn't hear the last name? wanted to ck him out.
Tom Bukovac, he is pretty much the who's who of session guys in Nashville. He was the top dog for a long time and he really is an out of this world talent. I'm working on tracking him down haha!
I was just jamming in E minor like I love to do (who doesn't) and I tried throwing in passing notes from outside of my scales. I even tried some crazy little chromatic runs outside of the scales and it was sounding really cool. Your ear doesn't expect it. Love that white Suhr! Shawn is a great guitar player btw.
What's a straight feel? Or even shuffle. I have a vague idea of that. Could you do a video on time and bars and stuff encompassing that and how to solo using those concepts. Just something fundamental if you could. Thanks Brett.
A straight feel is in my world when you play the classic rock n roll thing, think Chuck Berry. So basically straight eight notes. In a shuffle you are delaying the second eight note which gives it the shuffle feel. You could also look at it as a triplet with the middle note taken out. Different ways to look at it.
You’re a beast! Love how effortless it looks. Tone was amazing. Were you using a drive for this? Also, always wondering if you play with relatively low or high action.
Whether it was intended or not. By playing for Carrie Underwood in front of her sold out shows. Actually gave Shawn the exposure he needed to do what he wants to do now. Which is show people how to play guitar. Even though his job was to help Carrie get a good start to her career. Carrie didn't pick him to be part of her band. Arista at the time did that.
Wow. Dude YOU are the king of string! Listen to me, hahaha I lost all my coolness! Pardon me Brett as I totally fan out on you! You are king of string and your whole flippin court are royalty bro! Just ...wow. oh ok wow, AND this is THE BEST EVER shedding session ever caught on film. That's it. I'm done...MIC is DROPPED! ELVIS is out of the building and I can't believe you have given us this... I'm going to watch it again for, like, the 19th time and pinch my arm between replays to make sure this is real. Wow. Shawn wow you are amazing bro! Thank you thank you thank you thank you!
Shawn is a great guitar player! I noticed a strange fact: his fingers have a tremolous movement (when they are not on the fretboard). I hope it is nothing worrying...
Hi Brett is it true u are s lefty? I'm a dominant lefty but learned righty. Been playing 20 years and I can play but I feel I'd be much better if I played my natural way. Certain things like shred guitar and certain rhythms just require much more effort. Thoughts on your experience. I can tremelo pick at about 150 but tops I bet I can blow that away lefty in two months. On the other hand my legato is pretty good and my bending
Wish you would have let Shawn teach us instead of constantly interrupting him. I really wanted to learn the lick at 9:15 and you just kept talking over him. I appreciate you having the interview but please let them talk/teach and be a little more conscientious about your interjections.
@@BrettPapa I'm 66. Ear player my whole life. Better to just play what i can with heart and feel. The more I watch virtuosity like this the more depressed I get. My family and friends love my playing. I'm retired so it's good enough. I played pro many years ago and have pro equipment including les paul, strat, tele, and FUCHS BJ 21 MKIii amp and pedals. So for me hobbiest is good enough. These Nashville players are just beyond belief good. Even your intimidated. Thanks for your reply by the way. Nice of you to even bother taking time. best regards. Happily retired USA in Bulgaria. :)
Sorry, I meant they are coming to town for LS Fairwell tour next month. This will be my 48th next month. www.songkick.com/concerts/32610354-lynyrd-skynyrd-at-glen-helen-amphitheater
You need to be doing some Greta Van Fleet lessons... Highway Tune, Black Smoke Rising, Edge of Darkness... These kids are gonna be huge and you need to get out in front of it...
Amazing, Shawn reveals 1% of his secrets, gives us mortals a lifetime of knowledge, thanks!
Pretty much! I plan on wrangling him in for some more lessons next time I am back in Nashville! He has so many awesome chops, its ridiculous!!
Please do, I wouldn't mind paying for lesson (not too expensive though, :p) Thanks for the video

For sure! The real thing that makes any guitar player great is feel. Thanks for checking it out! More with Shawn coming soon!
Absolutely the best "side-stepping" kind of lessons I have ever seen. Wow. Lot's to practice and deal with, but good stuff.
Thanks! Trying to get Shawn back on soon!
I just watched Shawn's AC20 Vid which as usual left me grinning and shaking my head, I love the outside vibe in blues etc. Was thinking someone needs to get in that guys head, then I find this, lol. Cheers Brett, awesome :-)

Outside diminished runs a la Robben Ford. Wow! Love it!
Great stuff! Shawn has that stuff down!!
That story about the old Boogie store takes me back... I actually was the guitar teacher there back in the day and got to try and teach over the guys playing the Dual Recs on 10... good times!

he is one of my top two favs
Yeah nice relaxed style man. Great you ask the right questions to understand what they are playing. This was really interesting.
who are you talking about at 20:36? Tom ...? Can't understand the last name.
Bukovac. One of the best guitarists I have ever seen hands down!!!
Shawn is becoming one of the few in my top guitarist. His imagination has my getter totally out of the box. I’m a huge Steve Lukather, Joe Bonamassa, ect.. I love out of the box and tubbs does it in such a tasteful manner
Yep Shawn is definitely in that league.
Damn, Brett ! You run in some lofty circles !

Hi, Shawn .. :)
Thank ya sir! Glad you liked it!
Shawn is such a great player
Indeed he is!
The guy is super awesome. Could you please do a lesson with Greg Koch too?
Hmmm, I'll see what I can do.
two of OC/LA's best - awesomeness
Haha!
Does Shawn play with the round side of his pick?? How does he get that smooth sound???
What's the name of the guitar player he's mentioning at 15:33 (JD...?)
Simo probably.

Thanks! I love that thing!
You’re a beast! Love how effortless it looks. Tone was amazing. Were you using a drive for this? Also, always wondering if you play with relatively low or high action.
I can't remember what Shawn was playing through. He has quite a few amps there. His action was fairly low. Thanks for watching!

Haha! Classic! Well your uncle is one amazing guitar player!!
Ok, that was awesome. What pick is he using? Seems quite thick? Anyone ?
Not sure! Thanks for watching!

Jacked up on coffee and no food haha! He is all good!
Thanks you

What amp is Shawn using? Great tone.
I don’t remember. He has got a few in there!
beautiful "bounce" to his playing

I am a lefty. I just figure I would have more coordination in my left hand. Plus it's not so hard to find guitars!
papastache102 thanks Brett!
Love these interviews by the way making me want to visit Nashville
Those chromatic ideas are reminiscent of Jimmy Herring. Pretty cool..
Those shapes at 9.50 are all Cminor triad/voicings
C minor 6 ;)
@@ShawnTubbs right!
Am i wrong or he it sounds like the lydian dominant scale?
Does Shawn know how to play a wrong note?
He would say yes but I beg to differ haha!
Shawn's a bad dude!
Yes he is!! Hoping to film some more with him soon!
Altered 3rd, 5th, and 9th notes are blue notes, not wrong notes.
alpha century... that's where he get's that stuff... lol? mOre wonderful stuff... BLIsssstteringly good... ;0) M
Thanks for checking it out!
Shawn Tubbs is one of the few guitar players that can play "outside" without sound boring and in a simple chord progression
Very true!
yOUR LESSON jIMMY hENDRIX BESTIALITY
Damn Clark Kent is a badass player.
Yes he is! Straight up terrifying! Just was with him to days ago and was severely humbled lol!
Wish you would have let Shawn teach us instead of constantly interrupting him. I really wanted to learn the lick at 9:15 and you just kept talking over him. I appreciate you having the interview but please let them talk/teach and be a little more conscientious about your interjections.
Why do i bother trying?
Because if you do you might get it one day! Just maybe not as fast haha!
