Shawn thank you so much for getting this info out there. You have got to be one of the humblest guitar players out there. I realized when I started watching your videos, is that it is way cooler to be good at phrasing than it is to play 16th triplets up and down the fretboard. I have learned so much from your videos. Now go ahead a release an instructional book on how you approach the pentatonic scale. You have a unique way on how to make a simple scale sound cool with some added notes and good phrasing.

Hey Shawn. This video reminds me of something I was told back when I was but a young pup just starting out. I was taken under the wing by an older musician who played guitar, bass, drums, keys, horns, etc, all as if they were his main axe. One day he saw me practicing a specific technique and pointed out that if all I did was strive for technique, all I would arrive at was that one technique, whereas if I aimed instead for precision in executing my musicical ideas, I would automatically gain the technique I needed.
Now, I’m in no way saying that practicing certain techniques is a bad thing. On the contrary, trying to master techniques is a big tool (Lord knows I should do more of it), but it isn’t the end all/be all. The goal is to me musical, not a technician. The whole point is to communicate musically, not to show off.
I think your video demonstrates this wonderfully. In order words, do what works for you. Experiment with different approaches as this will only expand your options, but don’t ever feel like you’re tied to one way of doing any particular thing.
    Thanks, Man!

Another great lesson with tremendous info from you! I love the fact telling me, that even with "unperfect" picking skills one can be a great player as you are. The main thing is, that it should be musical. - Confirmed! I love your playing and your music and the way you are teaching is wonderful. Your honesty about your own playing / learning is great. Thank you!

    Shawn,
Your picking technique is great. Quite frankly one of the reasons your licks in my opinion are so difficult to duplicate are the picking patterns. Not that you need to hear this from me, but you are an elite guitar player. I love trying to learn those “outside licks” . Most often my picking gets tangled in knots trying. Upward sweeping on 2 notes and then the string skipping; its just madness!!! Thanks for the work you do.

Don't apologize for posting these lesson videos instead of gear demos, your lesson videos are great! I'm able to play most of the "outside" licks in your lessons when slowed down a bit, but I have trouble playing them at your speed, and I think it's largely because directional picking does not come naturally to me at all! I keep wanting to alternate pick. Hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but I'll work on it. Anyway, thanks for this lesson (and the very cool example lick in it)!

I've been working really hard on proper picking techniques (shout out to Troy Grady and Ben Eller - definitely check them out if this is something you want to work on with your playing) but it's so nice to know that there are pros who aren't as proficient in this area that still get clean tones. Very useful, thank you. Just 4 Little nuggets from many:
    1. When Selecting picking technique, consider not just “speed” but the tonal differences between them. (My thought: Ideally you could use any technique you want, choosing only what has the best tone for your ears).
    2. Also consider what notes the picking technique accents naturally.
    3. Some people can progress to amazing (I.e. Shawn Tubbs) levels without necessarily just running picking exercises, but focusing on learning licks and working them up to speed. This is huge for me, because I HATE running rote exercises, not just because they are boring but even more I important;y is that you are teaching your fingers to play robotically. And even though you can I learnt that, I just do not want to go near roboticism.
    4. Your pull offs and hammer-ons are so crisp, it sounds closer to picking, which is something I need to work on.

Tom T. Hall the Nashville songwriter has a picture frame on his desk that says "Do what you do." Your picking reminded me of this saying Shawn. You "Do what you do" and it works for you. Every single one of us watching your videos is different and we ALL "Do what WE do". I'm guessing each of us has our own favorite method of picking and some of us are fast, some are half fast, and some like me will NEVER be fast! But I " Do what I do" and that's who and what I am. I can alternate, hybrid and directional pick but not at mind-blowing speeds like you Shawn. That's why you're in Nashville and I'm not. Thanks for being you and letting us know how you "Do what YOU do". p.s.- I still think you're from another planet.

It’s interesting seeing someone go about the way of attacking the strings thinking about the sound they get out of it and what’s physically confortable for them. Taking classes my teacher always corrects me when I don’t alternate pick something. I get it, sure, in the context of mindful practice. But sometimes it just feels better doing it some other way. So the take away for me is not to put technique over other things, but add it according to necessity and context.

If you would just incorporate more Floyde Rose dive bombs and wah pedals you could cover up all of the not so perfect techniques like I do. This is why I am considered a master of the 6 string journey. I could share more but then why give away my secrets. I often share my wisdom with Michael Britt when I advise him to do leg kicks on stage in overly tight spandex to reinvent country music all together. They could be Lonedragon vs Lonestar and probably punch out several number 1's.

Sorry to have found this video so long after it was posted, but a couple of quick points. Shawn, I'm probably twice your age and possess a tiny fraction of your chops, if that. I will tell you right now that you have tremendous picking chops, and here's the main reason why. Just watching you pick in all your videos, your right hand looks extremely efficient, and is not tied to one way of picking or another. You use what's necessary at the time.
Unfortunately, my own picking, for various reasons, never followed that kind of streamlining when I was younger and resulted in extremely severe tendonitis a couple of years ago. I was forced to stop playing completely for about 9 months, and now I'm painfully trying to retrieve a small portion of what I could do. Luckily, I was not a professional, and so didn't depend on the guitar for my income, but please, whatever you do - and everybody else too - don't risk injury. It comes at a high price.
