- Live Performance of "Sgt. Mackenzie" by the Dark Isle Piper
#SlowAirSunday
Tune History:
This tune is a Lament written by Joseph Kilna MacKenzie in memory of his Great Grandfather, Charles Stuart MacKenzie, who was killed in combat in WW1. Sgt. MacKenzie served with the Seaforth Highlanders from the Elgin-Rothes area in Moray Scotland. Charles stood his ground and fought defending one of his badly injured fellow soldiers during a hand to hand trench warfare from bayonet wounds.
"The inspiration came after Joseph's wife Christine passed away from cancer. In his grief he looked at his Great Grandfathers portrait that sat on his mantel place and asked him how he found strength to go on. It was then in Joseph's mind he could see his Great Grandfather lying on the Battlefield and he wondered what his Great Grandfathers last thoughts were as a he lay dying on the battlefield. Then the words and the music came into Joseph's head.
At that moment Joseph felt that anyone prepared to Stand their ground and fight for their loved ones and for their country deserve to be remembered, respected and honored.
This tune was released on an album called: "Tried and True" in 2000. A copy of the tune made it's way into the hands of Hollywood director Randall Wallace and Actor Mel Gibson. The two directors decided that "Sgt. MacKenzie" should feature in their upcoming movie, "We Were Soldiers"
Lyrics:

My father died shortly after 30 years of service. This is what I had the piper play for him. Everyone expected Amazing Grace. They were all moved by it. None having a clue what song it was.
My father died in August 2022. He was a veteran of the Australian Army with service in the 1960's - Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam. We got a lone piper whom played "Flowers in the Forest" when doing the RSL (Like the British Legion) Poppy ceremony. He played Scotland the Brave on his exit from the church. Then he played Going Home for the procession. I wanted Black Bear but apparantly you need drums for that. I still miss the old codger but he left me a few things to clean up as part of his estate.
They played this at my Uncle's Funeral he served in the A Shau Valley and was awarded two Bronze Stars for his actions on Hamburger Hill and a Purple Heart for an injury he sustained during the final climb up what he referred to as "That damn nightmare they called Hill 937" he passed away in 97 he was one hell of a guy

O que e mais lindo, o canto, a mulher, a lembrança daqueles que se foram, para que outros sobrevivam... O lindo e a mulher cantando e relembrando, mantendo a Historia viva...
What is more beautiful, the singing, the woman, the remembrance of those who have left, so that others will survive ... The beautiful and the woman singing and remembering, keeping History alive ... Wagner Astolfi Felix

In memory of 267104, Private Robert F Allen, late of the 28th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, who was felled by a German gun at Passchendaele, 07 Nov 1917. RIP Robert, for a man does not really die as long as someone says his name.
