  • Here's an initial thoughts review of the EV EKX-15SP. Usually I do this right after unboxing but I didn't get to it right away. I haven't personally gigged with it yet but I've played with it in the shop and one of my DJ's have used it multiple times now. I also go through some details on my current inventory rotation.

    Great review. Bought a single sub. Weight and specs sold me. Will add another if needed. Also bought 2 ELX200 15s. Again, weight and specs. Your reviews are very helpful and appreciated. Thank you.

    And THIS is why long form content is way better.
    The crossover talk is massive and wouldn't be part of a short based off the title.

    Hey my friend is an M20 pole that it uses. I have a pair of QSC Ks118s for big events and a pair of EKX15SP subs as a micro setup paired with some k10.2s. I love mine, it’s sounds really good, it keeps up my old kw181s.
    Plus my back is thanking me for not having to lift the HEAVY 18s sólo to the back of my truck.

    I'd really like to know how these perform with live instrumentation, particularly kick drum. Considering downsizing from my 18" JBLs to create more space in the van, but not at the expense of that chest thumping kick I can currently provide for 200-300 person events.

The struggle is real. I just want to own everything! On a side note I've had the worst rental luck with the Yamaha subs.. I did my one video on the shifted magnet and now I just rented one out to someone I know and he totally put a 2 foot slice straight through the subwoofer cover.

I take extra care with mine some company needs to make bullet proof designed gear with cheap & easily replaceable parts so if they cosmetically damage them/it you can have the parts on hand to replace the damaged grill , paint , wood etc better still they should make plastic bumper parts on the corners and thick hard sponge for the grills , I know these ideas sound out there but they could be achieved.

    How do you connect this? DJ Mixer XLR out to Sub, Sub to Tops? or Mixer to Top, Top to Sub? or it doesnt matter since the outs send full range (1 Sub EKX-15SP , 2 Tops set up EKX-12P)

    • @TheAngrySoundTech
      @TheAngrySoundTech  3 роки тому +3

      I typically do subs to tops because I think it makes cable management look cleaner. But with EV it doesn't matter. The outs are just a signal pass through with no crossover applied. So make sure you engage the crossover on both subs and tops then plug them in whichever way you want 😊

      That's the common complaint with all models of EV speakers. Most people say not to worry about hitting the limit as there is still a good amount of headroom past the limit.

    How likely do you recommend this subwoofer, planning to get qsc k12.2 or ekx12p to pair. would your recommend jbl prx 815xlf subwoofer if you heard of? would you ever recommend having a 15inch top and 15inch bottom?

    • @TheAngrySoundTech
      @TheAngrySoundTech  3 роки тому +1

      I have not used anything in the PRX series in quite some time but I would say they must be about the same quality as the EKX series. Personally I like the EKX-15SP as a good mid-level, light weight, compact 15" subwoofer. I've had nothing but compliments from people that have rented it. Although I still have not personally used it at a gig as it keeps getting rented out. I have another one on order but of course they are backordered. I don't see anything wrong with using a 15" top with a 15" subwoofer. I'd probably cross the system over at 80 Hz and let the top cabinet go a little lower while letting the subwoofer use it's power on the lower frequencies.

      @@TheAngrySoundTech thanks for your input. I am deciding to get qsc k12 or ekx top with pair of ekx 15sp subwoofer. I don’t see jbl that much of use, I have seen most Djs use ev, qsc. Is it true that EV speakers heats up when being used, I heard some rumors about it.

    • @TheAngrySoundTech
      @TheAngrySoundTech  3 роки тому +1

      QSC speakers are rock solid. I know a few people that have been using them for years. I used to have a bunch in my inventory as well. My only gripe with them is the axisymetric coverage pattern. I understand why they do it but I'm just not a fan. I haven't had any problems with my EV speakers yet I also have a buddy that runs EV ETX speakers and he hasn't had any problems either. But I did do an outdoor show with the original ELX12P's a long time ago and they went into thermal shutdown during a show. One at a time luckily so I was able to limp my way through the show. As soon as the one cooled off enough to turn back on the other one would shut down. If you do a lot of outdoor shows in the sun it might be best to get speakers with built in cooling fans. Also what I hear is the main complaint with the current EV lineup is premature limiting.

    I do smaller live sound gigs. I'm using 4 EV ELX200-18SP subs with 4 Yamaha DSR112 for tops. My question is would I be better getting EKX18-SP or DXS15XLR subs to replace what I'm using now. I like lighter subs so it easier to setup & breakdown and load up. But I need more lower end and kick. Any info you can give me is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    • @TheAngrySoundTech
      @TheAngrySoundTech  3 роки тому +1

      Well I'll tell you what... I'm a little biased because I'm downsizing my show size and I made the decision to go with a high end 15" subwoofer instead of 18's... So personally I'd go with the DXS15XLR because it's one level up in subwoofer quality from the EKX18-SP. The 18" driver in the EV uses a 3" voice coil whereas the Yamaha uses a 4" voice coil on a 15" sub. This is one of the reasons the Yamaha is heavier but smaller than the EV. I believe you'll get better performance out of the Yamaha because the quality of the sub is better.

      I bought a single RCF 905AS sub to match with my RCF EVOX 12's as a bass extension (this is for my DJ setup, not really live sound). My thoughts were to end up buying a couple more because I want to get the RCF NXL24's to downsize my top cabinets for live sound. The Yamaha DXS15XLF has better specs than the RCF I bought though. Now I do flip flop around a bit and I haven't sold my Yamaha system yet so who knows. I may settle on a different subwoofer and just keep the one RCF sub to match with my column array... I've just been getting into more corporate audio lately and the skinny profile of the NXL24's are a better match for corporate live sound than giant ground stacks and they also have the ability to link two together for larger shows so there is some scalability. Just seems to make sense to me to match my subs to the tops I end up buying. I will say I wish yamaha made some sort of tall skinny speaker like the NXL24.

    • @TheAngrySoundTech
      @TheAngrySoundTech  3 роки тому +1

      I know people that use EV subs with their Evolves. I just don't recommend it. It's like using EKX tops with EKX subs and not engaging the crossover. You should always engage the crossover so you don't have overlapping frequencies. The downside is there is no crossover to engage on EV subs. So you just have to find a brand that puts a proper crossover in their subs. Yamaha does, RCF does, DAS Audio does and I am sure there are many other brands that do as well. Just look for a switch that says something like "high pass filter post / through put" or it might even be "DSP post / throughout"
