    I did labor work for setup and take down for side cash for many mobile DJs.
    Most did all sorts of events between 50-500 people. Small setups were always 2 - 12” tops or 2 - 15” tops.
    Nobody ever used 15” subs because they always used 18” subs, Medium setups were usually 2 tops and 2 subs. Large setups was usually 4 tops and 4 subs.
    JBL, QSC, Yorkville, EV, RCF all got used.
    Some used 8” and 10” speakers for side fills or for monitors. 12” and 15” were always for main tops.
    Dual 18” subs rarely got used, I have even seen single 21” subs as well which rarely got used also. Few had cargo vans, box trucks, and trailers to pull heavy equipment.
    Most common speakers were QSC K12 or RCF HDM45A and most common subs were QSC KW181 or Yorkville ES18P. Basically to sum it up, 8” and 10” tops are rare, 12” and 15” tops are mains. 15” and 21” subs are rare, 18” subs are mains.

    Guys keep in mind that it's very easy to overdo things at weddings. When I first started out I used to bring big systems and when I got there I often discovered that the venue or the crowd did not want to get blasted out of the place. Often my systems were overkill. I learned that it's better to just bring enough.
    That also allowed me to play solo without an assistant since the setup was easier and lighter. So now I use an RCF Evox 8 and will sometimes bring my 15 inch sub. The Evox gets the job done at weddings and bdays of 100 or even 150 guest. The way that I play I like to push bass so I like to bring that sub.
    It would be cool to have an 18 inch sub or two but now the setup turns into a 2 man gig.
    I should mention that I push the Evox to it's max with my crowds of 100 to 150.

      Yeah, I'm torn between that huge boom or get that boom at a smaller compact system. I totally want the QSC KS118's but then I'm thinking do I really need that? I already Have 2 older JBL EON518 subs and they are light at 65 lbs but I bet there are nice 12" and 15" subs that are light and probably louder with deeper bass than what I already have at a more portable and easier set up. It is so hard as a mobile DJ without a huge van and time and man power LOL The casters on the QSC's make sense and help roll in other equipment but if there are stairs I can at the moment carry my JBL's solo up stairs as i used to stopre them in the basement and carry them up each gig LOL Bad set ups Now they are in my garage or my storage unit. - DJEmir.com of DenversBestDJs.com

    We had a 1st gen Echo in our master bathroom for listening to music in the morning ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxABghAEkaIDGZfHRBH3D3rBrlraNmnC71 and while in the shower. I didn't realize how tinny and awful the sound output on the original Echo was until we replaced it with the Studio. It was a sonic upgrade far beyond what I was expecting. Just wow. I love it because it's like having speakers IN the shower. My friend likes it because the music is so loud that she can no longer hear me singing. So that's a win-win.

    I use either use 2 12” EV Tops or QSC’s for Weddings one trick I learned over the years is not to have your speakers at ear or face level with the guest. My son who does my setup for me is 6’4” tall and the bottom of the speakers are near the middle of his forehead. We have been complimented on this because we weren’t blasting out the eardrums of the guest and the music fills the room. As for sub(s) for a wedding depending on the venue we use 1 12” sub.
    Proms/Semi Formals we will use 4 12” EV Speakers and 2 18” subs again that’s for a large Venue for medium size venue we drop back down to our normal setup described above. All the music is concentrated towards the dance floor. It’s not how loud you can make the music it’s the clarity of the music.

It is old equipment & im looking to use it for band function events, till I can buy some more modern speakers.

    I'm experimenting with a EXTRMELY modular and portable setup where I have MANY speakers that run on lifepo4 batteries and also can run lighting due to each having an inverter. I have 4 sets put together. They each consist of a 10 inch sub on 900w RMS and a 6.5 inch woofer, and two 4 inch mids(200w RMS). Each one seems to be good for up to 100 people. the setup actually doesn't consist of a single PA speaker at all and people LOVE it.

    Those QSC K12's have been the best investment I have made as an upgrade I got the original K12's version 1's and they pretty much kill every event just fine solo even without a sub, I pair them with my JBL Eon 518 18" subs and it is enough to do just about any size event, I recently added two JBL Eon 712's ( I was looking for QSC K12.2's but they didn't have any at Guitar Center due to pandemic related supply issues :( I needed the two extra speakers that day because they surprised me with we need indoor and outdoor and a turn around the corner outside as well, turns out I probably could have used my 8" KRK studio monitors to add sound to the indoor and the two QSC and Two subs filled everything outside just fine so I probably could have waited for another event for the QSCs to become available. One thing that helps is adding the Ultimate Speaker stands as you can set the speaker then raise the poles very easily. I have had to lower the volume multiple times at outdoor events as the QSC's even at half 12 o'clock position is usually more than enough for most events, paired with two QSC KS118's. or JBL VRX subs will do just about anything. Maybe add two extra tops and spread them a little further out. Love to move to the touring side but getting that touring money is the hard part. DJEmir.com DenversBestDJs.com

    Spot on about the Evolve 50s. Overpriced and doesn’t compare to a separate sub/speaker system. After 2 years of playing with bands both indoors and outdoors we went to QSC 12.2. These project far enough that we can play outdoor festivals and still be heard at the bar far away from the stage. Also, we got our midrange back. The 200HZ crossover is not to my liking on the Evolve 50. We are currently researching putting together a smaller system for outdoor patio type gigs with just a few musicians. Thank you for this video. It really helps.

      @thedjwillied 8 місяців тому

      @@Andrew-cz4vp no sir! You're gonna need more meat than that. If you're doing targeted audio (vs flooding the entire room) you might get away with 2 15s over 18s. And that's a long shot! You'd have much better success with 2 sets of speakers. Depending on the layout of the space and target sweet spot, either 12s over 18s or 15s over 18. It really depends on the throw you need and how far you need to spread your speakers out.

Therefore, we use four times 18 inch and 2 times 21 inch for subs. A double jbl 15 inch and double jbl 12 in for upper base and and hell of a lot of mid tops boxes. We use the old school stacking system as we can fly, but our tops are still 8, 9 feet in the air.

    It's true that sound perception is subjective, but that's why we have standards and scientific ways of measuring what good sound sounds like. You could always try to tune a room flat and set that as a benchmark and move from there based on what you like the most. Using tools such as Smaart and inexpensive calibration mics can take you long ways on that path.

    I use touring level speakers to do my Weddings & corporate events (most Weddings are ~100-150 people but I often work with corporate crowds of 500-1000).
    I don't use the same speakers for each event though, my typical Wedding setup is 2x d&b audiotechnik E8 (tops), 2x d&b audiotechnik E15-X (subs) and 1x d&b audiotechnik D20 amplifier. This small touring grade system (8" tops and 15" subs) will easily cover up to 250 people. It costs more than double what a typical 'pro level' DJ setup does but it's much higher quality sound (from actual frequency response to transients, mid-range resolution, non harsh HF and better dispersion) and in a much lighter package (tops are 16lbs, subs are 53lbs each with a single 4ch 22lbs amplifier to power everything). Not all touring systems need to be big and heavy.
    For a large corporate event I'll use a pair of Q7 tops, 4x B6 subs and then have my E12-D and E8 as side-fills on a smaller D6 amplifier.
    I know what you're saying about us being here to make money, but you only have to buy the speakers once. I see A LOT of DJs sink thousands into a PA system only to do the same again 2 years later when something newer comes out.
    The last d&b E series speakers were released over 10 years ago and the design hasn't changed, Q series was released in 2003 and discontinued in 2015. They don't release a new model of the same speaker every year the way the lower end companies do. Over the course of 5-10 years the total bill won' t be much different to what I've spent.
    My speakers hold their value too, so if I go to sell them I know I'm getting a bigger percentage of the initial cost back. d&b actually raise their 'new' prices ~5% across the board every year so a £1000 speaker bought today may cost £1250 after 4-5 years, that means I can sell it for closer to the £1000 mark in 5-10 years time. DJ level speakers tend to go DOWN in price in my experience (I'm pretty sure QSC K series was more expensive when it was initially launched compared to just before it was discontinued, for example).

One venue we did a wedding at the max db level we were allowed to hit was 80db. We were not allowed to bring our speakers in also NO SUBS. The venue informed us the day of wedding about these restrictions also they informed us they have their own audio system, which were 2 12” Berhinger speakers mounted horizontally on opposite walls of the venue approximately 20 to 25 feet off the floor. The speakers were mounted facing each other, as for the speakers where the guests were seated the venue had small round speakers in the drop ceiling and about 8’ apart and staggered throughout that area.

    About 45% of power output, and people where telling me it was too loud. I totally overkilled the small venue with 100 people. I was just trying to offer my best product. Now on the other hand, I tried to make a deal with my friend (sound engineer) in a small town (mostly outdoors events), his immediate response, You're gonna need a digital processor and better bass speakers. And the now, Im building the 4th 18" box to start school dance promotions for the upcoming year graduations.😅. Lesson learned, most American weddings don't really need a big investment.😊 On the other hand, school dances DO require a big investment.🎉

    They launched the new Active X Lite 112 and 115 etc.
    Have a look around and have a listen. In studio I use Genelec and Quested monitors. The Fbt Xlite 112s sound so close to the genelec setup, just loader. Hahah.
    Cool take care!

  • @isettech
    @isettech 4 роки тому +3

    DJ Rick, I have to respectfully disagree on using column array speakers outdoors. First the reasons.
    1 An array speaker has a tighter pattern. A vertical array has a reduced vertical dispersion. This is great outdoors for ceremonies for better reach to the back rows as less power is shot into the sky.
    2 Indoors one placed horizontally can reach better in a long narrow room with less power thrown against the side walls making bad reflections in the rear. We all have had to deal with the long narrow chapel. Raise an array and place it horizontal. This can be useful indoors and in some outdoor settings depending on the seating spread for a ceremony.
    Small arrays are not disco dance speakers. Don't even consider it. They are more useful where a controlled sound pattern in the midrange is desired.
