I was the original poster in the NIN forums back in 2021 who discovered the Parents and Dead Ringers samples. There are also samples after the first chorus of “March of the Pigs” that can be traced back to Sorcerer and The Exorcist 2: The Heretic. Some of the latter samples can also be heard in Reznor’a remix of Marilyn Manson’s “Get Your Gunn”. So happy to see this info circulating!
*Crystal Japan was actually an accident, a subconscious accident, not a sample. *The "I know who I am" thing is a game changer to me as well omg. Great video!
Amazing video, spotted some stuff I'd never pick up on. Another potential sample if your doing deluxe version songs is memorabilia, which takes sounds from a nin prank call.
This is a great compilation! I know there will be more to find. One more we've identified is a right-audio crying sample in March of the Pigs from the 1977 film _Sorcerer._ On WhoSampled the cry sample had been identified for the MotP remix _All the Pigs, All Lined Up_ on which the sample is heard more clearly due to the lack of loud distorted guitar. There's a different cry sample in the left audio channel which hasn't yet been identified (at least not on WhoSampled.) There might be a sample in the MotP bridge too.
You know you've been influenced and listening to too much Nine Inch Nails/industrial music if you're sampling clips from movies that you think would be used in these types of songs
On the soft cell cover of memorabilia, there's dialogue samples of a porn video and at the end it is just trent and others at the studio making conversation.
There's also an old PC game called Jetfighter II that I could swear was the same machine-gun sound that perpetuated the rhythms of Ruiner. And if we're going the route of what the cover of Dead Souls sounded like, have you checked-out "Dig It" by Skinny Puppy?
There's a barely audible sample used in that quiet bit in Mr. Self Destruct, it sounds like singing but it's definitely done by some one other than trent.
It's commonly believed to be saying "the best thing about life is knowing you put it together" and it could just be a recording taken by Trent/the band/production and not sampled.
These samples are so subtle. Amazing that you were even able to flag them to their source.
There's something in the "I know who I am" sample that really changed that song for me.
I can't hear it
@Mantastic-ho3vm it very much is there. do you actually think multiple different people have picked up on it absent of each other?
@Mantastic-ho3vm whatever you say, buddy!
No it doesn't say "I know who I am" it says HEROIN!!! Duh
@GreenDinos it doesn't say I know who I am it says HEROIN what the songs about. You're right.
I think the main industrial sound in Reptile is also sampled from Aliens, sounds a lot like the exoskeleton.
🤔I did not realize
It's from a film called Leviathan I think
Yes it’s from Leviathan, sound coming from the vents
the only good part of that fucking movie was realizing that was the reptile sample lol
It is, you're right! The Leviathan sample is a different sound, lower-pitched and clunky.
I always liked the sounds of straws being blown through and used as reed instruments at the beginning of Eraser.
That's Trent blowing into his sax mouthpiece :)
I've always thought it was a straw too
I read in an article around 1995 that quoted Trent as saying he was blowing through a straw.
The inhuman downpitched hum/growl at the beginning of Eraser is Trent's labrador Maise.
I think you’re thinking of (you’re so) physical. She’s even credited in the broken liner notes
@@Kyle_The_Mighty she's credited in liner notes on TDS as well
Don’t forget about the song Addiction by Skinny Puppy that was sampled or maybe Trent Reznor was influenced enough to write Heresy.

Great video!
It doesn't say that. It says heroin. Clearly the subject matter of the song.
I only knew a few of these. Never knew the entire sample list. This is incredible. Thank you so much!
no one mentions this but i feel like Ministry - you know what you are, was sampled on Mr self destruct aswell
100%, and NIN later did a song with the same title (but with a question mark).
Amazing video, spotted some stuff I'd never pick up on. Another potential sample if your doing deluxe version songs is memorabilia, which takes sounds from a nin prank call.
That scares the shit out of me every time

You just broke my head with the "I know who I am" part!!!! And I've been listening to this thing for almost 20 years now
What was it about seeing Tom Skerritt's name that made Reznor say, "I'm going to make this sound like a shit ton of flies?"
🤔
You know you've been influenced and listening to too much Nine Inch Nails/industrial music if you're sampling clips from movies that you think would be used in these types of songs
This is brilliant, thanks!

Genio Sergio!! tremendo aporte!!
Gracias
Great video. Very illuminating!
AWESOME 🙏
Really cool and brilliant. Thanks for sharing.
amazing dude

Great finds man
Trent is a fucking LEGEND !!!!

🤔
I'm not hearing "I know who I am" very clearly...
Yeah because it says HEROIN clear as day. Not I know who I am.
Me too
It's had the highs and lows lopped off it, so it sounds like it's coming out of a breadbox, but it's there
That iggy pop closer sample BLEW MY MIND
caralho genial
в конце ультанул конечно
Going to do Skinny Puppy? :D
dead souls no es un sampleo. es un cover y ya. i know who i am, me voló la cabeza, increible!
@@AlejandroDiaz-by2db No. No lo es. Se me fue en la edición.
Can someone please clarify something for me - was the sample at the beginning of Big Man With A Gun different in the original release of the album?
I think piggy also has a sample
🤔
During the intro of A Warm Place you can clearly hear someone talking. Any idea of what that sample is?
No 🤔
It's commonly believed to be saying "the best thing about life is knowing you put it together" and it could just be a recording taken by Trent/the band/production and not sampled.
Do you really hear Roxy in here?
@@da30988 I found it on websites
The last one is just a cover.
Yeah.. that's cheap.
it’s a cover made for a movie, happens all the time
cualquiera, closer no es un sample de take a chance with me, video del orto
